Abstract:We prove that the classes of weakly $1$-dimensional and almost $0$-dimensional spaces are disjoint. The result has applications to hereditarily locally connected spaces, $\mathbb R$-trees, and endpoints of smooth fans.

Abstract:Given a norm $\nu$ on $\mathbb{R}^2$, the set of $\nu$-Dirichlet improvable numbers $\mathbf{DI}_\nu$ was defined and studied in the papers of Andersen-Duke (Acta Arith. 2021) and Kleinbock-Rao (Internat. Math. Res. Notices 2022). When $\nu$ is the supremum norm, $\mathbf{DI}_\nu = \mathbf{BA}\cup \mathbb{Q}$, where $\mathbf{BA}$ is the set of badly approximable numbers. Each of the sets $\mathbf{DI}_\nu$, like $\mathbf{BA}$, is of measure zero and satisfies the winning property of Schmidt. Hence for every norm $\nu$, $\mathbf{BA} \cap \mathbf{DI}_\nu$ is winning and thus has full Hausdorff dimension. In the present article we prove the following dichotomy phenomenon: either $\mathbf{BA} \subset \mathbf{DI}_\nu$ or else $\mathbf{BA} \smallsetminus \mathbf{DI}_\nu$ has full Hausdorff dimension. We give several examples for each of the two cases. The dichotomy is based on whether the critical locus of $\nu$ intersects a precompact $g_t$-orbit, where $\{g_t\}$ is the one-parameter diagonal subgroup of $\operatorname{SL}_2(\mathbb{R})$ acting on the space $X$ of unimodular lattices in $\mathbb{R}^2$. Thus the aforementioned dichotomy follows from the following dynamical statement: for a lattice $\Lambda\in X$, either $g_\mathbb{R} \Lambda$ is unbounded (and then any precompact $g_{\mathbb{R}_{>0}}$-orbit must eventually avoid a neighborhood of $\Lambda$), or not, in which case the set of lattices in $X$ whose $g_{\mathbb{R}_{>0}}$-trajectories are precompact and contain $\Lambda$ in their closure has full Hausdorff dimension.

Zero-dimensional $σ$-homogeneous spaces

Abstract:All spaces are assumed to be separable and metrizable. Ostrovsky showed that every zero-dimensional Borel space is $\sigma$-homogeneous. Inspired by this theorem, we obtain the following results: assuming $\mathsf{AD}$, every zero-dimensional space is $\sigma$-homogeneous; assuming $\mathsf{AC}$, there exists a zero-dimensional space that is not $\sigma$-homogeneous; assuming $\mathsf{V=L}$, there exists a coanalytic zero-dimensional space that is not $\sigma$-homogeneous. Along the way, we introduce two notions of hereditary rigidity, and give alternative proofs of results of van Engelen, Miller and Steel. It is an open problem whether every analytic zero-dimensional space is $\sigma$-homogeneous.

On $L^1$-$L^2$ dichotomy for flat symmetric spaces

Abstract:For rank 1 flat symmetric spaces, continuous orbital measures admit absolutely continuous convolution squares, except for Cartan type AI. Hence $L^1$-$L^2$ dichotomy for these spaces holds true in parallel to the compact and non-compact rank 1 symmetric spaces. We also study $L^1$-$L^2$ dichotomy for flat symmetric spaces of ranks $p=2,3$ of type AIII, i.e.\ associated with $SU(p,q)/S(U(p)\times U(q))$ where $q\geq p$. For continuous orbital measures given by regular points $L^1$-$L^2$ dichotomy holds. We study such measures given by certain singular points when $p=2$, and show that $L^1$-$L^2$ dichotomy fails. This is the first time such results are observed for any type of symmetric spaces of rank 2.

Abstract:We study a variant of extremal disconnectedness in frames, defined by requiring that any two disjoint open sublocales should be separable by disjoint open sublocales each of which is the interior of some zero-sublocale. In spaces, this notion was recently introduced in [1] in order to study some properties of frames of z -ideals of rings of continuous functions. The point-free approach adopted here brings to the fore some topological results not considered in [1], such as that a dense z -embedded subspace of a Tychonoff space has this property if and only if the space containing it has the property. In [1], this was proved only for the embedding X ⊆ βX . We give a ring-theoretic characterization by defining a property of f -rings in a transparent manner which shows why the property should be defined the way we do. The property is that if two annihilator ideals meet trivially, then the annihilator of each of the annihilator ideals contains a positive element such that the sum of the two elements is a non-zerodivisor.

Abstract:Inspired by a classical theorem of topological dimension theory, we prove that every geodesic metric space of asymptotic dimension $n$ containing a bi-infinite geodesic can be coarsely separated by a subset $S$ of asymptotic dimension equal to or smaller than $n-1$.\\ We define asymptotic Cantor manifolds, and we prove that every finitely generated group contains such a manifold. We also state some questions related to them.

Abstract:We begin to study classical dimension theory from the computable analysis (TTE) point of view. For computable metric spaces, several effectivisations of zero-dimensionality are shown to be equivalent. The part of this characterisation that concerns covering dimension extends to higher dimensions and to closed shrinkings of finite open covers. To deal with zero-dimensional subspaces uniformly, four operations (relative to the space and a class of subspaces) are defined; these correspond to definitions of inductive and covering dimensions and a countable basis condition. Finally, an effective retract characterisation of zero-dimensionality is proven under an effective compactness condition. In one direction this uses a version of the construction of bilocated sets.

Abstract:We present a characterization of $(\mu,\nu)$-dichotomies in terms of the admissibility of certain pairs of weighted spaces for nonautonomous discrete time dynamics acting on Banach spaces. Our general framework enables us to treat various settings in which no similar result has been previously obtained as well as to recover and refine several known results. We emphasize that our results hold without any bounded growth assumption and the statements make no use of Lyapunov norms. Moreover, as a consequence of our characterization, we study the robustness of $(\mu, \nu)$-dichotomies, i.e. we show that this notion persists under small but very general linear perturbations.

Abstract:In this note we introduce a notion of dichotomy which generalizes the classical concept of exponential dichotomy and the recent notion of Bohl dichotomy. A key attribute is the discussion of the sets of subspaces of the state space on which the dichotomy estimates are uniform. Two main results are a dichotomy spectral theorem based on our notion of dichotomy which is uniform on subspaces and a formula for the dichotomy spectral intervals which is new for the Bohl dichotomy spectrum as well as for the classical exponential dichotomy spectrum.

Abstract:We prove that there is a normed barrelled space with dimension $\mathrm{non}(\mathcal M)$, which denotes the smallest cardinality of a non-meager subset of $\mathbb R$. Consequently, it is consistent with $\mathsf{ZFC}$ that there is a normed barrelled space with dimension $<\!\mathfrak{c}$. This answers a question of Sánchez Ruiz and Saxon. This is a special case of a more general theorem: for every infinite cardinal $\kappa$, every Banach space with density character $\kappa$ contains a barrelled subspace with dimension $\mathrm{cf}[\kappa]^\omega \cdot \mathrm{non}(\mathcal M)$. We also prove that if the dual of a Banach space does not contain $c_0$ or $\ell^p$ for any $p \geq 1$, then that spaces does not have a barrelled subspaces with dimension $<\!\mathrm{cov}(\mathcal N)$, which denotes the smallest cardinality of a collection of Lebesgue null sets covering $\mathbb R$. In particular, it is consistent with $\mathsf{ZFC}$ that no classical Banach spaces contain barrelled subspaces with dimension $\mathfrak{b}$. This partly answers another question of Sánchez Ruiz and Saxon.

Abstract:For any field $\Bbb F$ and positive integers $m,n,d$ with $(m,n)\not= (1,1)$, Farb and Wolfson defined the certain affine varieties ${\rm Poly}^{d,m}_n(\Bbb F)$ as generalizations of spaces first studied by Arnold, Vassiliev, Segal and others. As a natural generalization of this, for each fan $\Sigma$ and $r$-tuple $D=(d_1,\cdots ,d_r)$ of positive integers, the current authors defined spaces ${\rm Poly}^{D,\Sigma}_n(\Bbb F)$, where $r$ is the number of one dimensional cones in $\Sigma$. These spaces can also be regarded as generalizations of the space ${\rm Hol}^*_D(S^2,X_\Sigma)$ of based rational curves from the Riemann sphere $S^2$ to the toric variety $X_\Sigma$ of degree $D$, where $X_\Sigma$ denotes the toric variety (over $\Bbb C$) corresponding to the fan $\Sigma$. In this paper, we define spaces ${\rm Q}^{D,\Sigma}_n(\Bbb F)$ ($\Bbb F=\Bbb R$ or $\Bbb C$) which are real analogues of ${\rm Poly}^{D,\Sigma}_n(\Bbb F)$ and which can be viewed as a generalizations of spaces considered by Arnold, Vassiliev and others in the context of real singularity theory. We prove that homotopy stability holds for these spaces and compute the stability dimensions explicitly.

Abstract:Weak-type quasi-norms are defined using the mean oscillation or the mean of a function on dyadic cubes, providing discrete analogues and variants of the corresponding quasi-norms on the upper half-space previously considered in the literature. Comparing the resulting function spaces to known function spaces such as $\dot{W}^{1,p}(\rn)$, $\JNp$, $\Lp$ and weak-$\Lp$ gives new embeddings and characterizations of these spaces. Examples are provided to prove the sharpness of the results.

Abstract:A topological space (X, tau) is a D-space if for every function phi: X -> tau with x is an element of phi(x) for each x is an element of X, {phi(x) : x is an element of F} covers X for some closed discrete subset F of X. The Michael line M, one of the most important elementary examples in general topology, is the Euclidean space IR isolating the irrationals. In this note we show that (1) the minimal dense linearly ordered extension of M is hereditarily paracompact, but not monotonically D; (2) the minimal closed linearly ordered extension of M is monotonically D; (3) if the space X is a D-space (resp., a monotone D-space), then so is its Alexandroff duplicate space A(X) and thus A(M) is monotonically D.

Abstract:We characterize measure spaces such that the canonical map $L_\infty \to L_1^*$ is surjective. In case of $d$ dimensional Hausdorff measure of a complete separable metric space $X$ we give two equivalent conditions. One is in terms of the order completeness of a quotient Boolean algebra associated with measurable sets and with locally null sets. Another one is in terms of the possibility to decompose space in a certain way into sets of nonzero finite measure. We give examples of $X$ and $d$ so that whether these conditions are met is undecidable in ZFC, including one with $d$ equals the Hausdorff dimension of $X$.
Lower spaces of multiplicative lattices

Abstract:We consider some distinguished classes of elements of a multiplicative lattice endowed with coarse lower topologies, and call them lower spaces. The primary objective of this paper is to study the topological properties of these lower spaces, encompassing lower separation axioms and compactness. We characterize lower spaces that exhibit sobriety. Introducing the concept of strongly disconnected spaces, we establish a correlation between strongly disconnected lower spaces and the presence of nontrivial idempotent elements in the corresponding multiplicative lattices. Additionally, we provide a sufficient condition for a lower space to be connected. We prove that the lower space of proper elements is a spectral space, and we further explore continuous maps between lower spaces.

Analytically one-dimensional planes and the Combinatorial Loewner Property

Abstract:It is a major problem in analysis on metric spaces to understand when a metric space is quasisymmetric to a space with strong analytic structure, a so-called Loewner space. A conjecture of Kleiner, recently disproven by Anttila and the second author, proposes a combinatorial sufficient condition. The counterexamples constructed are all topologically one dimensional, and the sufficiency of Kleiner's condition remains open for most other examples. A separate question of Kleiner and Schioppa, apparently unrelated to the problem above, asks about the existence of "analytically $1$-dimensional planes": metric measure spaces quasisymmetric to the Euclidean plane but supporting a $1$-dimensional analytic structure in the sense of Cheeger. In this paper, we construct an example for which the conclusion of Kleiner's conjecture is not known to hold. We show that either this conclusion fails in our example or there exists an "analytically $1$-dimensional plane". Thus, our construction either yields a new counterexample to Kleiner's conjecture, different in kind from those of Anttila and the second author, or a resolution to the problem of Kleiner--Schioppa.

Abstract:In 2009 Lurie published an expository article outlining a proof for a higher version of the cobordism hypothesis conjectured by Baez and Dolan in 1995. In this note we give a proof for the 1-dimensional case of this conjecture. The proof follows most of the outline given in Lurie's paper, but differs in a few crucial details. In particular, the proof makes use of the theory of quasi-unital $\infty$-categories as developed by the author in a previous note.
A Dichotomy for Finite Abstract Simplicial Complexes

Abstract:Given two finite abstract simplicial complexes A and B, one can define a new simplicial complex on the set of simplicial maps from A to B. After adding two technicalities, we call this complex Homsc(A, B). We prove the following dichotomy: For a fixed finite abstract simplicial complex B, either Homsc(A, B) is always a disjoint union of contractible spaces or every finite CW-complex can be obtained up to a homotopy equivalence as Homsc(A, B) by choosing A in a right way. We furthermore show that the first case is equivalent to the existence of a nontrivial social choice function and that in this case, the space itself is homotopy equivalent to a discrete set. Secondly, we give a generalization to finite relational structures and show that this dichotomy coincides with a complexity theoretic dichotomy for constraint satisfaction problems, namely in the first case, the problem is in P and in the second case NP-complete. This generalizes a result from [SW24] respectively <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2307.03446" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2307.03446">arXiv:2307.03446</a> [cs.CC]

A complete classification of the zero-dimensional homogeneous spaces under determinacy

Abstract:All spaces are assumed to be separable and metrizable. We give a complete classification of the homogeneous zero-dimensional spaces, under the Axiom of Determinacy. This classification is expressed in terms of topological complexity (in the sense of Wadge theory) and Baire category. In the same spirit, we also give a complete topological classification of the filters on $\omega$. As by-products, we obtain purely topological characterizations of the semifilters and filters on $\omega$. The Borel versions of these results are in almost all cases due to Fons van Engelen. Along the way, we obtain Wadge-theoretic results of independent interest, especially regarding closure properties.
