Abstract:Membrane separation of CO2 from H-2, N-2, or CH4 has economic benefits. However, the trade-off between selectivity and permanence in membrane "separation is challenging. Here, we prepared a high-performance CO2- philic membrane by confining the [BMIM] [BF4] ionic liquid to the nanochannels in a laminated graphene oxide membrane. Nanoconfinement causes the [BMIM] [BF4] cations and anions to stratify. The layered anions facilitate CO2 transportation with a permeance of 68.5 GPU. The CO2/H-2, CO2/CH4, and CO2/N-2 selectivities are 24, 234, and 382, respectively, which are up to 7 times higher than that of GO-based membranes and superior to the 2008 Robeson upper bound. Additionally, the resultant membrane has a high-temperature resistance, long-term durability, and high-pressure stability, indicating its great potential for CO2 separation applications. Nanoconfining an ionic liquid into the two-dimensional nanochannels of a laminated membrane is a promising gas separation method and a nice system for investigating ionic liquid behavior in nanoconfined environments.
Enhanced Gas Separation Through Nanoconfined Ionic Liquid in Laminated MoS2 Membrane

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) materials-based membranes show great potential for gas separation. Herein an ionic liquid, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([BMIM][BF4]), was confined in the 2D channels of MoS2-laminated membranes via an infiltration process. Compared with the corresponding bulk [BMIM][BF4], nanoconfined [BMIM][BF4] shows an obvious incremental increase in freezing point and a shift of vibration bands. The resulting MoS2-supported ionic liquid membrane (MoS2 SILM) exhibits excellent CO2 separation performance with high CO2 permeance (47.88 GPU) and superb selectivity for CO2/N2 (131.42), CO2/CH4 (43.52), and CO2/H2 (14.95), which is much better than that of neat [BMIM][BF4] and [BMIM][BF4]-based membranes. The outstanding performance of MoS2 SILMs is attributed to the nanoconfined [BMIM][BF4], which enables fast transport of CO2. Long-term operation also reveals the durability and stability of the prepared MoS2 SILMs. The method of confining ILs in the 2D nanochannels of 2D materials may pave a new way for CO2 capture and separation.
Metal-Organic Framework Channelled Graphene Composite Membranes for H-2/Co2 Separation

Abstract:Graphene-based materials offer great potential in gas separation. However, it remains a challenge to control the interlayer structure to obtain membranes with high permeability. We describe a route for the fabrication of metal-organic framework (MOF) channelled graphene composite membranes with molecular sieving properties by in situ crystallization. Based on polar oxygen groups, extended interlayer spacing and electronegativity, MOF nanosheets can easily be impregnated into interlayers of reduced graphene oxide (rGO), which strongly anchor and bolster up rGO by coordination bonds to form a porous architecture with uniform nanochannels. The H-2/CO2 selectivity of ZIF-8/rGO membranes reached about 26.4. Moreover, many other MOF materials were also inserted between rGO sheets to obtain membranes with both high selectivity (larger than 10.3) and superior permeability (in the range of 73-21 112 barrer).

Abstract:A copolymer with a water-soluble polymer was synthesized from acrylic acid (AA) and 2-(dimethylamino) ethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) by radical polymerization. The composite membrane was prepared with the DMAEMA-AA copolymer as the top layer and a PS ultrafiltration membrane as the support. The permeation of pure CO2 and CH4 through the composite membrane was measured. The effects of feed gas pressure, separation layer thickness, temperature and heat treatment on the composite membrane performance were studied. The results show that the composite membranes possess good CO2 permeance and selectivity of CO2 over CH4. The membrane displays a CO2 permeation rate of 6.12×10−7 cm3(STP) cm−2 s−1 Pa−1 and CO2/CH4 selectivity of 253.1 at 26°C, 1140 Pa of gas pressure.

Abstract:Developing a novel nanocomposite membrane with reaction and separation integrated into one unit to catalyze CO2 cycloaddition is an alternative but challenging solution for mitigating current CO2 excess emissions. In this context, a series of supported ionic liquid membranes were prepared on modified alumina supports with intrinsic nanopores by thermally induced phase transition method, and ILs infiltrate the nanochannels and wet the top layer where liquid crystals grow into highly distributed thin layers of catalytic sites. Additionally, the morphology, thickness, and ingredient of the membrane layers were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform Infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, and a membrane reactor with the concept of forced flow-through was constructed to catalyze the CO2 and PO reactions. Under the optimized conditions, the PO conversion rate was stable at about 82.75%, and the maximum STY could reach 38.28 mmol PC·g·cat–1·h–1 using the [HDBU] Cl membrane.

Abstract:A method of introducing trifluoromethyl group (-CF3) to the polymer backbone by Suzuki reaction was developed to prepare fluorinated polymers for gas separation. The CO2 permeability increased 119% after the -CF3 group was substituted. Tungsten disulfide (WS2), a graphene-like two-dimensional material, was used for first time as an inorganic filler to prepare composite MMMs to separate CO2, N2 and CH4. The introduction of WS2 nanosheets increases more transport channels for gas molecules, which lead to the permeability and selectivity of MMMs obviously improved in comparison with the pristine FPPO membrane. The CO2/N2 selectivity and CO2/CH4 selectivity of 10 wt% WS2-FPPO MMMs reached a maximum about 29.6 and 39.4, respectively, with a CO2 permeability of 472 Barrer at 10 psig and 291 K. The best performance of MMMs for CO2/N2 and CO2/CH4 surpasses the Robeson's upper bound line. The MMMs showed strong stability in long-term observation. The results indicated a new direction for CO2 separation by introducing -CF3 group to polymer and using 2D WS2 nanosheets as nanofiller.

Abstract:The development of highly effective and durable CO2 separation membrane is still a challenge for the carbon capture and storage. Herein, a novel BN nanosheets supported magnetic ionic liquid membrane (BN-SMILM) is constructed by nanoconfining magnetic ionic liquid (MIL) [P6,6,6,14][FeCl4] to the two-dimentional (2D) nanochannels of laminated BN membrane. The 2D nanochannels provide a well support and restricted space for the MIL. The nanoconfinement effect makes the magnetic [FeCl4]- anions align along the center of 2D BN nanochannels, leading to selectively accelerate the CO2 transport. The nanoconfinement effect and CO2 separation mechanism are further explicated by the molecular dynamic simulations. As a result, compared with the polymer supported MIL membrane, the as-prepared BN-SMILM exhibits better CO2 separation performance, with CO2 permeability of about 227 Barrer and CO2/N2 selectivity of 90 that is above the 2008 Robeson upper-bound. The BN-SMILM also presents excellent long-term stability after 7 days operation, revealing the promising applications in CO2 separation. This work provides a new strategy to prepare high-performance supported liquid membrane materials towards practical environmental and energy application.

Abstract:Developing high-performance membranes for selective separation of CO2 is still a focus point in light of massive CO2 emission. Salting-out effect is an useful method for maximizing CO2 separation performance in membranes by inhibiting permeation of inert gases (N-2 and CH4). In this work, we designed a class of fluorion-based protic ionic liquids (FPILs) and characterized their chemical structures. Aqueous FPIL solutions were prepared and their densities as well as viscosities were measured. Supported ionic liquid membranes (SILMs) immobilized with FPIL solutions were prepared, and the permeability of CO2, N-2 and CH4 were determined under humidified condition. Facilitated transport of CO2 and salting-out effect on N-2 and CH4 in FPIL solutions were found. High CO2 permeability (up to 2572 barrers) and superior CO2/N-2 and CO2/CH4 selectivity (up to 774 and 387, respectively) were obtained at 40 degrees C and 0.1 bar of CO2 partial pressure in [DMAPAH][F] solution of 40 wt% water. In addition, effects of CO2 transmembrane pressure, water content and operating temperature on gas permeation as well as facilitated transport mechanism and salting-out effect were systemically invesgated. This work offers a new strategy for designing ILs-based membranes for efficient seperation of CO2.

Abstract:Ionic liquid (IL), a neutral assembly of charged ions, is a potential material for CO2 capture and storage. The practicality of IL can be improved by confining it into porous substrates and nanopores, which will further enhance the performance of IL by changing its structure. Additionally, an external electric field (EEF) should also influence the IL structure through its charged components. In this work, we applied an EEF on a MoS2 supported ionic liquid membrane (MoS2-SILM) to selectively facilitate CO2 transport by the dual influence of MoS2 nanochannel and EEF. The redistribution of nanoconfined IL under an EEF resulted in the increase in free volume of IL and decrease in anion-cation interactions, which led to the enhancement of CO2 solubility and diffusion, and further, the permeance. Compared with the MoS2-SILM without an EEF, the CO2 permeance was enhanced from 89 GPU to 200 GPU, and the selectivity of CO2/H-2, CO2/CH4 and CO2/N-2 was also enlarged 2-3 times. An interesting phenomenon was the asymmetric CO2 separation performance influenced by the CO2 adsorbed on MoS2 nanosheets under a positive and negative EEF, which may establish a new strategy to design high-performance gas separation membranes.
MoS2 Nanosheets Functionalized Composite Mixed Matrix Membrane for Enhanced CO2 Capture via Surface Drop-Coating Method

Abstract:Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) is a graphene-like two-dimensional inorganic material, which has been used for the first time as an inorganic nanofiller to prepare a composite mixed matrix membrane to separate CO2 and N2. Polysulfone (PSf) was used as a support substrate and poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) was used as the gutter layer. The selective layer was prepared by mixing a CO2-philic copolymer Pebax 1657 with MoS2 nanosheets to enhance CO2 permeance. In addition, a simple drop-coating and evaporation method was developed to prepare the selective layer. Both permeability and selectivity of the MoS2-Pebax membrane have exceeded the pristine Pebax membrane. The permeability and selectivity reached to the maximum values of 64 Barrer and 93, respectively, at 0.15 wt % MoS2 nanosheets loadings. This result has been on the Robeson's upper bound line. The membrane also showed higher stability. The separation mechanism of the membrane is based on the well-known solution-diffusion mechanism. In addition, the stronger adsorption energy of MoS2 nanosheets to CO2 than N2 also provides the enhancement of gas selectivity.
Facilitated Transport of CO_2 Through Supported Liquid Membranes with Task-Specific Ionic Liquids

Abstract:New supported ionic liquid membranes immobilized with five triethylbutylammione-based ionic liquids([N_(2224)][Malonate],[N_(2224)][Meleate],[N_(2224)][Acetate],[N_(2224)][Propionate], and[N_(2224)][Tf_2N]) on polyethersulfone microfiltration membrane have been prepared to facilitate the transport of CO_2.Factors such as the nature of ionic liquids,operating temperature and transmembrane pressure,water vapor content were found to have significant influence on CO_2 separation performance.The selectivity of CO_2/N_2,CO_2/CH,pairs were observed to be as high as 250,220 at 10 KPa of CO_2 partial pressure at 40℃in PES membrane supported with [N_(02224)][Meleate].Experimental results indicated that these low-alkaline ionic liquids immobilized into solid membrane have the great potential to achieve excellent permeability and selectivity for the purpose of large scale industrial applications.

Abstract:CO2 separation and recovery technology is a significant part of resolving the global greenhouse issue. In order to develop a cost-effective and high-performance method to realize CO2 separation, a new kind of supported liquid membrane was configured by incorporating deep eutectic solvent into the nanoslits of titanium carbide (Ti3C2Tx) membrane. The deep eutectic solvent is a novel ionic liquid analogous with equal physical and chemical advantages but more economical and environmental benign. And the Ti3C2Tx, as a neoteric two-dimension material, can serve as a valid platform for supporting the deep eutectic absorbent. By combining the two kinds of material, the resultant Ti3C2Tx supported deep eutectic liquid membrane shows good CO2 preference against other light gases as well as high thermal stability and long-term durability. The permeance of CO2 is about 26.35 GPU with selectivity over N2, CH4 and H2 are 319.15, 249.01 and 12.38, respectively. The molecule dynamic simulation is also applied to uncover the separation mechanism of CO2 and the ingredient redistribution and interionic refactor phenomenon of deep eutectic solvent trapped in the Ti3C2Tx nanoslits.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs), characterized by their well-organized porous structure, exhibit promising prospects for carbon capture. Nevertheless, their weak film-forming property and relatively large pore sizes constrain their utilization as gas separation membranes. This study introduced a facile approach to fabricating COF membranes tailored for CO 2 separations. By introducing an extra monomer, trimesoyl chloride (TMC), together with COF monomers, a thin and defect-free layer of COF-polyamide was synthesized by interfacial polymerization process. The amide structure embedded into the COFs layers was expected to mend the defects, strengthen the binding forces, and improve the stability of the COFs layers. To further enhance the performance, imidazolium ionic liquid (IL) was adopted to modify the COF-polyamide layer. The introduction of TMC rendered the COF-polyamide layer more negatively charged, facilitating stronger binding to the positively charged cations in the IL. This modification with IL effectively reduced the pore size of the COFs and increased the affinity for CO 2 . The resultant COF composite membranes exhibited a high CO 2 permeance of 125.9 GPU and CO 2 /N 2 selectivity up to 35.0, accompanied by robust long-term stability. Our method paves a new way for the fabrication and application of interfacial polymerized COF membranes for gas separation applications.

Abstract:Continuous covalent organic framework (COF) thin membranes have garnered broad concern over the past few years due to their merits of low energy requirements, operational simplicity, ecofriendliness, and high separation efficiency in the application process. This study marks the first instance of fabricating two distinct, self-supporting COF membranes from identical building blocks through solvent modulation. Notably, the precision of the COF membrane's separation capabilities is substantially enhanced by altering the pore alignment from a random to a vertical orientation. Within these confined channels, the membrane with vertically aligned pores and micron-scale stacking thickness demonstrates rapid and selective transportation of Li+ ions over Na+ and K+ ions, achieving Li+/K+ and Li+/Na+ selectivity ratios of 38.7 and 7.2, respectively. This research not only reveals regulated orientation and layer stacking in COF membranes via strategic solvent selection but also offers a potent approach for developing membranes specialized in Li+ ion separation.

Abstract:The covalent organic framework (COF) shows great potential for use in gas separation because of its uniform and high-density sub-nanometer sized pores. However, most of the COF pore sizes are large, and there are mismatches with the gas pairs (3–6 Å), and the steric hindrance cannot work in gas selectivity. In this work, one type of COF (NUS-2) supported ionic liquid membrane (COF-SILM) was prepared for use in CO 2 /N 2 separation. The separation performance was investigated using molecular dynamics simulation. There was an ultrahigh CO 2 permeability up to 2.317 × 10 6 GPU, and a better CO 2 selectivity was obtained when compared to that of N 2 . The physical mechanism of ultrahigh permeability and CO 2 selectivity are discussed in detail. The ultrathin membrane, high-density pores and high transmembrane driving force are responsible for the ultrahigh permeability of CO 2 . The different adsorption capabilities of ionic liquid (IL) for CO 2 and N 2 , as well as a gating effect, which allows CO 2 passage and inhibits N 2 passage, contribute to the better CO 2 selectivity over N 2 . Moreover, the effects of the COF layer number and IL thickness on gas separation performance are also discussed. This work provides a molecular level understanding of the gas separation mechanism of COF-SILM, and the simulation results show one potential outstanding CO 2 separation membrane for future applications.

Abstract:The CO2-philic properties of powdered fluorinated triazine frameworks make them promising candidates for fabrication of porous CO2 separation membranes. This is rarely reported because of lack of suitable synthetic approaches. Here, fluorinated membranes based on covalent triazine frameworks are prepared through a rational design of aromatic nitrile monomers containing fluorine and ether groups via a sol-gel polymerization process. The CO2 separation performance rises significantly with the fluorine content in the membrane. With functionalized triazine units, fluorine, and ether groups, these carbon molecular sieve membranes obtained after pyrolysis exhibit intrinsic ultra-micropores, high surface areas and excellent thermal stability under air. Excellent CO2 permeability and CO2 to N2 selectivity surpassing the Robeson upper bound are achieved. Our general design and synthesis protocol allow an easy access to fluorinated porous membranes, thus significantly expanding the currently limited library of CO2-philic and chemically stable membranes for highly efficient CO2 separation.

Abstract:Selective separation of CO2 from flue gas conforms to the criterion of sustainable society. Herein, a series of imidazolium-based phenolate ionic liquids (ILs) that have dual-site interaction centers to isolate CO2 from N-2 by supported ionic liquid membranes (SILMs) is designed and prepared. Density, viscosity, and CO2 solubility in these ILs were measured. The effects of the electron-withdrawing or electron-donating ability of the substituents on the anion, the operation temperature and partial pressure on the permeability of CO2, and the ideal selectivity of CO2/N-2 were investigated systematically. High permeability (up to 2540 barrers) and selectivity of CO2/N-2 (up to 127) are achieved in 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium phenolate ([bmim][PhO]) containing 15 wt % H2O under humidified condition. A novel facilitated transport mechanism, transfer of CO2 from carbene to phenolated anion, is proposed based on NMR, FT-IR, and theoretical calculation results. The new pathway is believed to offer an alternative opportunity for designing novel CO2 separation materials.
Ultrathin ionic COF Membrane via Polyelectrolyte‐Mediated Assembly for Efficient CO2 Separation

Abstract:A facile and straightforward polyelectrolyte‐mediated assembly strategy is developed, allowing the preparation of ultra‐large nanosheets composed of ionic covalant orgainc frameworks (COFs) and polyelectrolyte, and the fabrication of ultrathin COF membrane (down to 8 nm). The resulting membrane exhibits a CO2 permeance of 1371 GPU with CO2/N2 selectivity of 33, surpassing the state‐of‐the‐art COF membranes. Fabricating ultrathin covalent organic framework (COF) membranes toward high‐permeance molecular separations is highly desired yet challenging. Herein, a polyelectrolyte‐mediated assembly (PMA) strategy is developed to fabricate ultrathin ionic COF membrane for efficient CO2 separation. The PMA strategy allows a facile control over the assembly mode between polyethyleneimine (PEI) and TpPa‐SO3H, yielding PEI‐bridged ultra‐large COF nanosheets which are readily processed into COF membranes with thickness down to 8 nm. The resulting COF membranes exhibit a high CO2 permeances of 1371 GPU and CO2/N2 selectivity of 33 for stimulated flue gas. This PMA strategy may open up a new avenue to fabricating ultrathin 2D material membranes for diverse applications.
