Abstract:The major hurdle of room temperature sodium-ion batteries (NIBs) for large-scale energy storage applications lies in developing new electrode materials with higher energy/power densities and improved durability. This work presents a novel Na-P3/Li2MnO3 layered composite cathode with an alternating heteroepitaxial nanostructure fabricated by an in-situ composition modulation route. XRD structural refinement, synchrotron XAS and aberration-corrected HAADF-/ABF-STEM were employed to understand the structure evolution accompanying Li substitution. It is revealed that the in-situ formation of Li2MnO3 (Li-O’3) changes the crystallographic and chemical features of the neighboring Na-P3 layered matrix significantly and leads to the alternating Na-P3/Li-O’3 heteroepitaxial nanostructure. This alternating heteroepitaxial nanostructure delivers an extremely high reversible capacity of ~ 210 mAh g−1 between 1.5 and 4.5V vs. Na/Na+, much improved cycling stability and excellent electrode kinetics. Its enhanced electrochemical performance can be ascribed to the effective suppression of the P3-P3’’ phase transition and subsequent amorphization upon cycling to 4.5V.

Abstract:In this work, atomically K1-xNaxNbO3 thin films are taken as examples to investigate the reversible and irreversible effects in a horizon plane, i.e., the changes of domain structures, phase states, free energies, etc., under a z-axis alternating current field via a phase-field method. The simulation results show the driving forces during the charging and discharging process, where there is a variation for the angles of the domain walls from 180 degrees to 90 degrees (and then an increase to 135 degrees), which are the external electric field and domain wall evolution, respectively. As for the phase states, there is a transformation between the orthorhombic and rhombohedral phases which can't be explained by the traditional polarization switching theory. This work provides a reasonable understanding of the alternating current field effect, which is essential in information and energy storage.

Abstract:Honeycomb-layered phases like Na3Ni2SbO6 have been extensively researched as high-voltage and high-rate capability cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries. However, our understanding of the structural stability and dynamic reaction mechanisms of Na3Ni2SbO6 cathode during cycling, especially at atomic-scale, remains limited. Here, we track the microstructure evolution during extraction of Na+ ions in Na3Ni2SbO6 cathode at atomic scale in an aberration-corrected transmission electron microscope. The electron beam irradiation that can provide a driving force for the Na+ ion migration, allows us to mimic the battery charge process. By controlling the electron beam dose, we study the structure evolution behavior to obtain insights into understanding the work principle and failure mechanism of Na3Ni2SbO6 cathode under different charge rate conditions. We find that the real-time structural evolution and ion migration pathways of Na3Ni2SbO6 cathode are distinct under different electron beam doses. High-dose irradiation reveals Na ion depletion, surface cracks, and phase transformations, mimicking rapid capacity decay. In contrast, low-dose irradiation shows slower ion migration, ordered Na vacancy formation, and maintaining structural integrity, which more closely resembles the electrochemical process of actual battery. This study provides an atomistic understanding of the structural stability and Na ions deintercalation mechanism in Na3Ni2SbO6 cathodes, offering new insights into optimizing electrode materials.

Abstract:In the present work, taking advantage of aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy, we show that the dynamic lithiation process of anode materials can be revealed in an unprecedented resolution. Atomically resolved imaging of the lithiation process in SnO2 nanowires illustrated that the movement, reaction, and generation of b = [1[overline]1[overline]1] mixed dislocations leading the lithiated stripes effectively facilitated lithium-ion insertion into the crystalline interior. The geometric phase analysis and density functional theory simulations indicated that lithium ions initial preference to diffuse along the [001] direction in the {200} planes of SnO2 nanowires introduced the lattice expansion and such dislocation behaviors. At the later stages of lithiation, the Li-induced amorphization of rutile SnO2 and the formation of crystalline Sn and LixSn particles in the Li2O matrix were observed.

Abstract:Capacity and voltage fading of layered structured cathode based on lithium transition-metal oxide is closely related to the lattice position and migration behavior of the transition-metal ions. However, it is scarcely clear about the behavior of each of these transition-metal ions in this category of cathode material. We report direct atomic resolution visualization of interatomic layer mixing of transition metals (Ni, Co, Mn) and lithium ions in layered structured oxide cathodes for lithium-ion batteries. Using chemical imaging with an aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) and density function theory calculations, we discovered that, in the layered cathodes, Mn and Co tend to reside almost exclusively at the lattice site of transition-metal (TM) layer in the structure or little interlayer mixing with Li. In contrast, Ni shows a high degree of interlayer mixing with Li. The fraction of Ni ions resides in the Li layer followed by a near linear dependence on total Ni concentration before reaching saturation. The observed distinctively different behavior of Ni with respect to Co and Mn provides new insights on both capacity and voltage fade in this class of cathode materials based on lithium and TM oxides, therefore providing scientific basis for selective tailoring of oxide cathode materials for enhanced performance.

Abstract:The development of heterostructured anode materials provides an effective approach for enhancing the electrochemical performance of sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). In this work, ab initio molecular dynamics simulations and first-principles calculations are employed to investigate the Na-ion intercalation and diffusion in MXene/graphene oxide heterostructures. The influence of graphene oxidation on interlayer spacing, Na-ion diffusion kinetics, and transport mechanisms is examined at an atomic scale. It has been observed that oxygen functional groups can increase the interspacing between adjacent layers, thereby improving the initial embedding of Na ions. However, overoxidation causes an obstructive effect on the ionic conduction channels. An appropriate oxidation degree enables optimal Na-ion migration kinetics while retaining structural integrity. Our simulation results provide crucial insights into the rational design of high-performance MXene-based anodes for SIBs with excellent capacity and cycling stability.
Unraveling Atomically Irreversible Cation Migration in Sodium Layered Oxide Cathodes

Abstract:Transition metal (TM)-based layered oxides NaTMO2 (TM = Fe, Ni, Co, Mn, etc.) have been intensively pursued as high-capacity cathode materials for Na-ion batteries. Nevertheless, they still suffer from fast capacity loss and voltage decay, as a result of the layered structure instability upon extended electrochemical cycling. The mechanism underlying such instability remains poorly understood. Here we unravel the TM migrations and structural evolution of a quaternary NaNi0.3Co0.12Mn0.18Fe0.4O2 compound during electrochemical cycling using atomic-resolution electron microscopy and associated spectroscopies. We discover successive migrations of TM ions to Na layers that account for structure and performance degradations. The Fe ions migrate into the interstices of both tetrahedra and octahedra of the layers; on the contrary, the Ni ions migrate predominantly in the octahedral ones, and the Mn and Co ions mostly remain in the TM layers. Direct atomic-level observations of the TM migration process upon cycling offer deep insight into designing high-capacity and long-life span cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries.
Atomic Insight into the Layered/Spinel Phase Transformation in Charged LiNi0.80Co0.15Al0.05O2 Cathode Particles

Abstract:Layered LiNi0.80Co0.15Al0.05O2 (NCA) holds great promise as a potential cathode material for high energy density lithium ion batteries. However, its high capacity is heavily dependent on the stability of its layered structure, which suffers from a severe structure degradation resulting from a not fully understood layered -> spinel phase transformation. Using high resolution transmission electron microscopy and electron diffraction, we probe the atomic structure evolution induced by the layered -> spinel phase transformation in the NCA cathode. We show that the phase transformation results in the development of a particle structure with the formation of complete spinel, spinel domains, and intermediate spinel from the surface to the subsurface region. The lattice planes of the complete and intermediate spinel phases are highly interwoven in the subsurface region. The layered -> spinel transformation occurs via the migration of transition metal (TM) atoms from the TM layer into the lithium layer. Incomplete migration leads to the formation of the intermediate spinel phase, which is featured by tetrahedral occupancy of TM cations in the lithium layer. The crystallographic structure of the intermediate spinel is discussed and verified by the simulation of electron diffraction patterns.
In-situ X-ray studies of high-entropy layered oxide cathode for sodium-ion batteries

Abstract:High-entropy oxides (HEOs) are promising electrode materials for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) owing to their remarkable electrochemical properties and excellent cycling stability. A high-entropy O3-type layer-structured NaCu0.1Ni0.3Fe0.2Mn0.2Ti0.2O2 (NCNFMT) was synthesized using the Pechini method, as a new cathode material for SIBs. Herein, density functional theory calculations were used to understand the formation energy of NCNMFT, proving its synthesizability. Battery testing revealed a reversible capacity of 130 mAh g−1, with a capacity retention of up to 87% after 100 cycles at 0.1C, and excellent long-term cycling stability (approximately 71% after 500 cycles at 0.5C). The prepared material also exhibited an outstanding Coulombic efficiency of 98% and a high energy efficiency of 95%. Furthermore, the high entropy effect was investigated using energy dispersive spectroscopy and X-ray absorption fine structure to prove that the material contains a single phase with well-distributed metal ions. The operando synchrotron X-ray diffraction demonstrated that the phase transition was delayed until the extraction of 0.32 sodium ion from NCNFMT, which indicates the stabilization of the O3-phase induced by the high entropy effect. Furthermore, the quasi-solid-state NCNFMT||polyethylene oxide-Na3.2Ca0.1Zr1.9Si2PO12||Na cells exhibited excellent performance with a high discharge capacity of 112 mAh g−1 and retention of 78% after 100 cycles. The above results demonstrate the advantages of HEOs as potential cathode materials for SIBs.

Abstract:For the intercalation type cathode in lithium-ion batteries, the structural framework of electrode is expected to remain unchanged during lithium insertion and extraction. Unfavorable phase transition in electrode materials, which has been frequently observed, modifies the structural framework, which leads to capacity loss and voltage decay. Here, we track atoms motion/shift in lithium manganese oxide during a phase transition from spine' to rocksalt by using atomically resolved aberration corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy and spectroscopy. We find that when given energy, the transition metal cation can readily hop between oxygen tetrahedral and octahedral sites in oxygen deficient lithium manganese oxide similar to lithium diffusion behavior, which leaves the anion structure framework almost unchanged. During this phase transition, the intermediate state, migration length, and atomic structure of phase boundaries are revealed, and the mechanism is discussed. Our observations help us to understand the past experimental phenomena and provide useful information to stabilize the structure of electrode materials and thus improve the cycling life of lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:The oxygen stacking of O3‐type layered sodium transition metal oxides (O3‐NaTMO2) changes dynamically upon topotactic Na extraction and reinsertion. While the phase transition from octahedral to prismatic Na coordination that occurs at intermediate desodiation by transition metal slab gliding is well understood, the structural evolution at high desodiation, crucial to achieve high reversible capacity, remains mostly uncharted. In this work, the phase transitions of O3‐type layered NaTMO2 at high voltage are investigated by combining experimental and computational approaches. An OP2‐type phase that consists of alternating octahedral and prismatic Na layers is directly observed by in situ X‐ray diffraction and high‐resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy. The origin of this peculiar phase is explained by atomic interactions involving Jahn–Teller active Fe4+ and distortion tolerant Ti4+ that stabilize the local Na environment. The path‐dependent desodiation and resodiation pathways are also rationalized in this material through the different kinetics of the prismatic and octahedral layers, presenting a comprehensive picture about the structural stability of the layered materials upon Na intercalation.

Abstract:Li-substituted, manganese-based, layered oxides NaxLi0.18Mn0.66Co0.17Ni0.17O2+ (x=0.54, 0.66, 0.78 and 0.90) have been investigated as one kind of high-performance cathode materials for sodium ion batteries (NIBs). Phase compositions and local structures of the cathode materials with varying sodium content were elucidated by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and atomic-scale high angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscope (HAADF-STEM), which demonstrates that a Li2MnO3-like (Li-O'3) phase was aroused in P2-type sodium layered oxide matrix forming a Na-P2/Li-O'3 hybrid structure. More importantly, the effect of sodium content on the preferential exposure of (102) and (104) facets and surface morphology of the cathode particles has been comprehensively studied, as well as their relationship with electrochemical performance. It reveals that, in addition to the preferential growth of (102) and (104) facets that has been proved to improve the capacity and rate capability of the cathode materials, the smooth surface finish of the particles also plays a key role in determining the performance. The layered sodium cathode material with a sodium content of 0.66 possesses sufficient exposure of (102) and (104) facets and smooth side surface, resulting in the superior capacities under various C rates (187 mAh/g at 0.2 C and 114 mAh/g at 5 C) comparing to the cathode materials with all other sodium contents. The mechanism has also been proposed in this study. These findings presented herein open up new strategies to design high performance layered oxide cathode for sodium ion batteries.

Abstract:High-performance and low-cost transition metal (TM) layered oxides using earth abundant elements are promising cathodes for Na-ion batteries. However, it is challenging to obtain desired materials because the large Na size, different Na occupations and various layer stacking sequences multiply the complication in determining the structure of a given composition and exacerbate uncertainty to the structure-property correlation. In this work, we use the attainment of desired Na x Mn y Ni z TM 1−y-z O 2 -based cathode materials as model compound to demonstrate a general roadmap for batch development of sodium layered cathodes towards practical applications. Several cost-effective O3 and P2/O3 hybrid cathode materials have been obtained, all of which demonstrate excellent performance. Abstract:Layered transition metal oxides have been one of the most promising cathode materials in the lithium-ion as well as sodium-ion batteries. In the case of sodium-ion battery configuration, several transition metals elements are electrochemically active, leading to an extensive study on the composition and structure-property relationships. Particularly, substituting elements in the layered structure is one of the effective approaches to alter the composition, structure, and electrochemical properties. The substituted element could be positioned at either transition metal site or alkali site of the layered structure and plays different role depending on the position. In this talk, I will present the substitution of lithium on different sites within the layered oxides and its effect on the electrochemical performances. Lithium was substituted at (1) alkali site of O3-type layered structure and (2) transition metal site of P2-type layered structure as cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries. The substitution sites were identified by synchrotron and neutron powder diffraction patterns. Each type was compared with transition metal oxides that do not include lithium in order to understand the role of lithium in each substitution site.

Abstract:The size and shape control of amorphous nanomaterials has long been a bottleneck restricting their further development. Here, we present a general approach to synthesize more than twenty kinds of amorphous metal oxide nanosheets. The amorphous state of the nanosheets is determined using aberration-corrected high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. By using extended X-ray absorption fine structure analysis, we demonstrate that amorphous nanosheets have a larger interatomic distance and a looser packing characteristic compared with crystalline counterparts. The as-prepared amorphous FeOx nanosheets are used as sodium-ion batteries anode materials, exhibiting notable performance with a specific capacity of 263.4 mAh g−1 at 100 mA g−1 and long-term cyclic stability. Significantly, a reversible amorphous-crystalline-amorphous structure transformation phenomenon during the cycling test is observed at the atomic scale.
A Nanostructured Cathode Architecture for Low Charge Overpotential in Lithium-Oxygen Batteries.
