Abstract:Dissolution behavior of cathode materials, LiCoO2 and LiFePO4, in aqueous electrolytes is investigated at an atomic level. In article number 1804564 Sung-Yoon Chung and co-workers use scanning transmission electron microscopy, in particular, to characterize an unusual cation occupancy in the tetrahedral interstices in LiCoO2 during Co dissolution. This atomic-scale observation provides a valuable contribution toward suppressing surface instability and thereby improving long-term stability of cathode materials in aqueous Li-ion batteries.

Abstract:A lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) olivine cathode displays rich phase transition behavior during charging/discharging. Despite extensive studies, the evolution of the LiFePO4/FePO4 two-phase coexistence structure and the underlying mechanism are still a point of debate due to the intricate and often disparate phase morphologies observed. Here we apply phase-field simulations to provide detailed insights into the three-dimensional phase evolution process in LiFePO4 upon delithiation under a large driving force. The simulation reveals that the coherency stress arising from the LiFePO4/FePO4 lattice mismatch destabilizes the initially flat delithiation front and induces filamentary growth of the FePO4 phase along [010], which is in excellent agreement with a recent operando X-ray imaging study [Ohmer et al. Nature Communications6, 6045 (2015)]. The combined simulation and experimental results provide the first illustration of the phenomenon of stress-induced instability of the lithium (de)intercalation front in battery electrode compounds. We show that this phenomenon is facilitated by the surface mode of coherent spinodal decomposition in LiFePO4 and influenced by the anisotropies of misfit strain, elasticity and lithium diffusion. It is detrimental to battery performance and life by causing stress concentration and reducing the lithium (de)intercalation kinetics and thus should be mitigated.

Abstract:Transition metal (TM) substitution has been widely applied to change complex oxides crystal structures to create high energy density electrodes materials in high performance rechargeable lithium‐ion batteries. The complex local structure in the oxides imparted by the TM arrangement often impacts their electrochemical behaviors by influencing the diffusion and intercalation of lithium. Here, a major discrepancy is demonstrated between the global and local structures of the promising high energy density and high voltage LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 spinel cathode material that contradicts the existing structural models. A new single‐phase lattice‐cell orientation disorder model is proposed as the mechanism for the local ordering that explains how the inhomogeneous local distortions and the coherent connection give rise to the global structure in the complex oxide. Further, the single‐phase model is consistent with the electrochemical behavior observation of the materials.
Revealing the Thermodynamics and Kinetics of In-Plane Disordered Li 2 MnO 3 Structure in Li-Rich Cathodes

Abstract:Though cationic and anionic coredox endows Li-rich oxides the ability to break through the capacity limit, the structural basis that predominates the thermodynamic and kinetic behavior is still unclear. Here, we construct in-plane Li/Mn ordered and disordered Li-rich oxides, revealing the thermodynamic origin of Li2MnO3 superstructures and kinetic behavior of lithium storage. We elucidate the thermodynamic formation energies of different Li/Mn lattices ordering states, which guides the experimental synthesis of the target disordered materials. In the disordered Li2MnO3 structure, we confirm that the in-plane Li/Mn disorder structure supports a fast 3D Li+ diffusion network and the time sequence of thermodynamic delithiation in the TM-layer is postponed. The theoretical calculation shows that the negative shift of the d-band center could promote the stabilization of oxygen redox. Thus, the designed disordered material exhibits higher Li+ diffusion kinetics and superior cyclic stability of high capacity. Abstract:Although the two active redox centers in Li-rich cathodes, including the anionic and cationic contributions, can enable Li-ion batteries to achieve outstanding specific energy, their behaviors at different current densities have not been clarified. Here, we provide a comparative study of transition metals (TMs) and oxygen redox activities by directly accessing their oxidation states in Li-rich materials operated at very different current rates. Our data reveal that the oxidation of oxygen in the near-surface region is at the same level for electrodes cycled with a wide range of current rates, indicating a reaction gradient of lattice oxygen redox reactions. The oxidation process of lattice oxygen is found to be dynamically compatible with that of the TMs. Combining the results of first principles calculations and complementary experimental findings, we propose a detailed mechanism of structural distortion from octahedral Li to tetrahedral Li and the role of oxygen vacancy in Li+ diffusion. It is found that fast delithiation occurring at high current densities can easily cause local structural transformation, leading to a limited Li+ diffusion rate and consequently suppressing rate capability.

Abstract:Ordered layered structures serve as essential components in lithium (Li)-ion cathodes1-3. However, on charging, the inherently delicate Li-deficient frameworks become vulnerable to lattice strain and structural and/or chemo-mechanical degradation, resulting in rapid capacity deterioration and thus short battery life2,4. Here we report an approach that addresses these issues using the integration of chemical short-range disorder (CSRD) into oxide cathodes, which involves the localized distribution of elements in a crystalline lattice over spatial dimensions, spanning a few nearest-neighbour spacings. This is guided by fundamental principles of structural chemistry and achieved through an improved ceramic synthesis process. To demonstrate its viability, we showcase how the introduction of CSRD substantially affects the crystal structure of layered Li cobalt oxide cathodes. This is manifested in the transition metal environment and its interactions with oxygen, effectively preventing detrimental sliding of crystal slabs and structural deterioration during Li removal. Meanwhile, it affects the electronic structure, leading to improved electronic conductivity. These attributes are highly beneficial for Li-ion storage capabilities, markedly improving cycle life and rate capability. Moreover, we find that CSRD can be introduced in additional layered oxide materials through improved chemical co-doping, further illustrating its potential to enhance structural and electrochemical stability. These findings open up new avenues for the design of oxide cathodes, offering insights into the effects of CSRD on the crystal and electronic structure of advanced functional materials. The introduction of chemical short-range disorder substantially affects the crystal structure of layered lithium oxide cathodes, leading to improved charge transfer and structural stability.

Abstract:Through soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy, hard X-ray Raman scattering, and theoretical simulations, we provide the most in-depth and systematic study of the phase transformation and (de)lithiation effect on electronic structure in Li(x)FePO(4) nanoparticles and single crystals. Soft X-ray reveals directly the valence states of Fe 3d electrons in the vicinity of Fermi level, which is sensitive to the local lattice distortion, but more importantly offers detailed information on the evolution of electronic states at different electrochemical stages. The soft X-ray spectra of Li(x)FePO(4) nanoparticles evolve vividly with the (de)lithiation level. The spectra fingerprint the (de)lithiation process with rich information on Li distribution, valency, spin states, and crystal field. The high-resolution spectra reveal a subtle but critical deviation from two-phase transformation in our electrochemically prepared samples. In addition, we performed both first-principles calculations and multiplet simulations of the spectra and quantitatively determined the 3d valence states that are completely redistributed through (de)lithiation. This electronic reconfiguration was further verified by the polarization-dependent spectra collected on LiFePO(4) single crystals, especially along the lithium diffusion direction. The evolution of the 3d states is overall consistent with the local lattice distortion and provides a fundamental picture of the (de)lithiation effects on electronic structure in the Li(x)FePO(4) system.

Abstract:We report a method for in situ atomic-scale observation of electrochemical delithiation in a working all-solid-state battery using a state-of-the-art chip based in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) holder and focused ion beam milling to prepare an all-solid-state lithium-ion battery sample. A battery consisting of LiCoO2 cathode, LLZO solid state electrolyte and gold anode was constructed, delithiated and observed in an aberration corrected scanning transmission electron microscope at atomic scale. We found that the pristine single crystal LiCoO2 became nanosized polycrystal connected by coherent twin boundaries and antiphase domain boundaries after high voltage delithiation. This is different from liquid electrolyte batteries, where a series of phase transitions take place at LiCoO2 cathode during delithiation. Both grain boundaries become more energy favorable along with extraction of lithium ions through theoretical calculation. We also proposed a lithium migration pathway before and after polycrystallization. This new methodology could stimulate atomic scale in situ scanning/TEM studies of battery materials and provide important mechanistic insight for designing better all-solid-state battery.
Defect Physics, Delithiation Mechanism, and Electronic and Ionic Conduction in Layered Lithium Manganese Oxide Cathode Materials

Abstract:Layered LiMnO2 and Li2MnO3 are of great interest for lithium-ion battery cathodes because of their high theoretical capacities. The practical application of these materials is, however, limited due to poor electrochemical performance. We herein report a comprehensive first-principles study of defect physics in LiMnO2 and Li2MnO3 using hybrid density-functional calculations. We find that manganese antisites have low formation energies in LiMnO2 and may act as nucleation sites for the formation of impurity phases. The antisites can also occur with high concentrations in Li2MnO3; however, unlike in LiMnO2, they can be eliminated by tuning the experimental conditions during preparation. Other intrinsic point defects may also occur and have an impact on the materials’ properties and functioning. An analysis of the formation of lithium vacancies indicates that lithium extraction from LiMnO2 is associated with oxidation at the manganese site, resulting in the formation of manganese small hole polarons; whereas in Li2MnO3 the intrinsic delithiation mechanism involves oxidation at the oxygen site, leading to the formation of bound oxygen hole polarons ηO+. The layered oxides are found to have no or negligible bandlike carriers, and they cannot be doped n or p type. The electronic conduction proceeds through hopping of hole and/or electron polarons; the ionic conduction occurs through lithium monovacancy and/or divacancy migration mechanisms. Since ηO+ is not stable in the absence of negatively charged lithium vacancies in bulk Li2MnO3, the electronic conduction near the start of delithiation is likely to be poor. We suggest that the electronic conduction associated with ηO+ and, hence, the electrochemical performance of Li2MnO3 can be improved through nanostructuring and/or ion substitution.

Abstract:Here, a detailed investigation of the crystal structure of Lithium‐Rich layered Oxides is reported, using Synchrotron X‐ray diffraction, Neutron diffraction, and Transmission Electron Microscopy. The introduction of defects into a monoclinic unit cell and the supercells approach can describe all main structural features, opening new frontiers in rationalization of the interplay between synthesis, structure, and electrochemical properties. Lithium‐rich layered oxides (LRLOs) are one of the most attractive families among future positive electrode materials for the so‐called fourth generation of lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs). Their electrochemical performance is enabled by the unique ambiguous crystal structure that is still not well understood despite decades of research. In the literature, a clear structural model able to describe their crystallographic features is missing thereby hindering a clear rationalization of the interplay between synthesis, structure, and functional properties. Here, the structure of a specific LRLO, Li1.28Mn0.54Ni0.13Co0.02Al0.03O2, using synchrotron X‐ray diffraction (XRD), neutron diffraction (ND), and High‐Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HR‐TEM), is analyzed. A systematic approach is applied to model diffraction patterns of Li1.28Mn0.54Ni0.13Co0.02Al0.03O2 by using the Rietveld refinement method considering the R3 ̄ m and C2/m unit cells as the prototype structures. Here, the relative ability of a variety of structural models is compared to match the experimental diffraction pattern evaluating the impact of defects and supercells derived from the R3 ̄ m structure. To summarize, two possible models able to reconcile the description of experimental data are proposed here for the structure of Li1.28Mn0.54Ni0.13Co0.02Al0.03O2: namely a monoclinic C2/m defective lattice (prototype Li2MnO3) and a monoclinic defective supercell derived from the rhombohedral R3 ̄ m unit cell (prototype LiCoO2).

Abstract:We report on the delithiation of LiCoO2 thin films using oxalic acid (C2H2O4) with the goal of understanding the structural degradation of an insertion oxide associated with Li chemical extraction. Using a multi-technique approach that includes synchrotron radiation x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, micro Raman spectroscopy, photoelectron spectroscopy and conductive atomic force microscopy we reveal the balance between selective Li extraction and structural damage. We identify three different delithiation regimes, related to surface processes, bulk delithiation and damage generation. We find that only a fraction of the grains is affected by the delithiation process, which may create local inhomogeneities. The chemical route to Li extraction provides additional opportunities to investigate delithiation while avoiding the complications associated with electrolyte breakdown and could simplify in situ measurements.

Abstract:Most technologically important electrode materials for lithium-ion batteries are essentially lithium ions plus a transition-metal oxide framework. However, their atomic and electronic structure evolution during electrochemical cycling remains poorly understood. Here we report the in situ observation of the three-dimensional structural evolution of the transition-metal oxide framework in an all-solid-state battery. The in situ studies LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 from various zone axes reveal the evolution of both atomic and electronic structures during delithiation, which is found due to the migration of oxygen and transition-metal ions. Ordered to disordered structural transition proceeds along the <100>, <110>, <111> directions and inhomogeneous structural evolution along the <112> direction. Uneven extraction of lithium ions leads to localized migration of transition-metal ions and formation of antiphase boundaries. Dislocations facilitate transition-metal ions migration as well. Theoretical calculations suggest that doping of lower valence-state cations effectively stabilize the structure during delithiation and inhibit the formation of boundaries.

Abstract:Monoclinic lithium vanadium phosphate Li3V2 (PO4)3(LVP) is a highly promising cathode material for lithium-ion batteries. In the past decades, extensive efforts have been made to improve the electrochemical performance of LVP by carbon coating and cation doping[1]. In-depth understanding of the local structures and charge-discharge mechanism of LVP can provide valuable information for the design of cation doping or surface modification. SSNMR has been demonstrated a powerful tool of local structure analysis and dynamics. However, due to sever line broadening and signal coalescence caused by the heating effect of carbon in the cathode composite, SSNMR study of LVP material was only limited to samples prepared by chemical delithiation[2], which cannot fully represent the real electrochemical process. We hereby present the first SSNMR study of LVP/C cathode reaction. The electrodes have been prepared in a binder free and carbon additive free fashion, in order to reduce the heating effect to a minimum during NMR spectra acquisition. A variety of SSNMR techniques have been combined to obtain structural information from different aspects. The structural changes of the polyhedron framework upon delithiation-lithiation were traced by 7Li and 31P NMR. The dynamic processes involving Li exchange and migration were monitored by variable temperature 7Li NMR and EIS technique. 13C-7Li REDOR NMR and HRTEM were performed to investigate Li-O-C connectivity and the short range structure at the LVP-carbon interface. The NMR results have elucidated the driving force of the asymmetric phase formation during charge-discharge within the voltage window of 4.3-4.8 volts and provided experimental evidence of direct chemical bonding between LVP and carbon coating. Abstract:Due to the intervolved oxygen loss and cation disordering upon lithium extraction at high potentials, it is difficult to recognize the reason for the performance decay in the conventional lithium-rich layered oxides (LLOs). Herein, we chose Li2MoO3 as a prototype lithium-rich layered material to understand the effect of cationic disordering upon delithiation. On the basis of the density functional theory (DFT) calculations and performance characterization, we clarify that the local disorder structures of Li2MoO3 modulate the sequence of Li extraction from different sites, which influences the properties of the material, such as capacity, charge compensation and electric conduction. These findings provide profound views in understanding the performance decay and structural design of LLOs for the Li-ion batteries.

Abstract:Layered lithium transition metal oxide (LTMO) cathode materials have attracted much attention for lithium-ion batteries and are shining in the current market. Establishing a clear structure–performance relationship is necessary for the performance improvement of LTMO cathode materials. The combination of synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD) with high intensity and XRD Rietveld refinement is powerful for revealing the structural characteristics of LTMO cathode materials. This review summarizes the application of high energy XRD and Rietveld refinement in LTMO cathode materials, including the brief introduction of synchrotron XRD and Rietveld refinement and their applications in understanding the structural evolution related to the synthetic, thermal runaway, cycling, and high-rate charge/discharge process of LTMO cathode materials. Synchrotron XRD can provide insights into the intermediates and reaction paths in the synthesis process, the origin of thermal runaway, the mechanism of structural decay during cycles, and the structural evolution during high-rate charging/discharging. Future works should focus on the development of higher intensity X-rays to gain more in-depth insights into the intrinsic relationship between their structural characteristics and properties.
