Abstract:Developing a facile route to access active and well-defined single atom sites catalysts has been a major area of focus for single atoms catalysts (SACs). Herein, we demonstrate a simple approach to generate atomically dispersed platinum via a thermal emitting method using bulk Pt metal as a precursor, significantly simplifying synthesis routes and minimizing synthesis costs. The ammonia produced by pyrolysis of Dicyandiamide can coordinate with platinum atoms by strong coordination effect. Then, the volatile Pt(NH3) x can be anchored onto the surface of defective graphene. The as-prepared Pt SAs/DG exhibits high activity for the electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction and selective oxidation of various organosilanes. This viable thermal emitting strategy can also be applied to other single metal atoms, for example, gold and palladium. Our findings provide an enabling and versatile platform for facile accessing SACs toward many industrial important reactions.

Abstract:At the forefront of nanochemistry, there exists a research endeavor centered around intermetallic nanocrystals, which are unique in terms of long-range atomic ordering, well-defined stoichiometry, and controlled crystal structure. In contrast to alloy nanocrystals with no elemental ordering, it is challenging to synthesize intermetallic nanocrystals with a tight control over their size and shape. Here, recent progress in the synthesis of intermetallic nanocrystals with controllable sizes and well-defined shapes is highlighted. A simple analysis and some insights key to the selection of experimental conditions for generating intermetallic nanocrystals are presented, followed by examples to highlight the viable use of intermetallic nanocrystals as electrocatalysts or catalysts for various reactions, with a focus on the enhanced performance relative to their alloy counterparts that lack elemental ordering. Within the conclusion, perspectives on future developments in the context of synthetic control, structure-property relationships, and applications are discussed.

Abstract:Single‐atom catalysts (SACs) have attracted considerable attention in heterogeneous catalysis because of their well‐defined active sites, maximum atomic utilization efficiency, and unique unsaturated coordinated structures. However, their effectiveness is limited to reactions requiring active sites containing multiple metal atoms. Furthermore, the loading amounts of single‐atom sites must be restricted to prevent aggregation, which can adversely affect the catalytic performance despite the high activity of the individual atoms. The introduction of nanoscale metal particles (NMPs) into SACs (NMP‐SACs) has proven to be an efficient approach for improving their catalytic performance. A comprehensive review is urgently needed to systematically introduce the synthesis, characterization, and application of NMP‐SACs and the mechanisms behind their superior catalytic performance. This review first presents and classifies the different mechanisms through which NMPs enhance the performance of SACs. It then summarizes the currently reported synthetic strategies and state‐of‐the‐art characterization techniques of NMP‐SACs. Moreover, their application in electro/thermo/photocatalysis, and the reasons for their superior performance are discussed. In Situ Exsolved Metal Nanoparticles: A Smart Approach for Optimization of Catalysts

Abstract:Heterogeneous supported metal nanoparticles (NPs) are extensively applied in a variety of chemical and energy conversion processes. Traditionally, these catalysts are prepared by deposition methods. However, they usually show wide ranging size distributions and are easily subject to poisoning and coarsening or agglomeration during the reactions. Alternatively, the time and cost-effective in situ exsolution strategy has successfully addressed the above drawbacks and is able to produce finer and more evenly distributed metal NPs even at relatively low metal loading. Endowed by their socketed nature, the exsolved metal NPs possess excellent operational stabilities as well as great catalytic activities. Moreover, these exsolved metal NPs are smart and can be regenerated upon redox treatments, further extending the lifetime of catalysts. This review presents a general idea in facilitating the degree of exsolution from various oxide substrates by summarizing the recent advances in the exsolution related studies and research outputs with a special emphasis on the understanding of the thermodynamical roles of different experimental parameters.

Abstract:Precious metal nanoparticles have important applications in catalysis. In order to maximize the atomic efficiency and therefore reduce the usage of valuable resources, the particle size, morphology and their interaction with the support need to be carefully controlled and optimized. In the case of monometallic Au and Pt catalysts prepared via wet chemical routes, advanced electron microscopy has allowed us to obtain an unprecedented and more complete view of the complex dispersion of metal entities present, including nanoparticles, sub-nm clusters, and atomically dispersed species. With this new information, a better understanding of the catalytically active sites/species can be established. [1] By correlating catalytic performance data with the nanostructures generated by various catalyst preparation methods the most active species can be identified and specifically targeted for synthesis, thus significantly improving the atomic efficiency.

Abstract:The search for constructing high-performance catalysts is an unfailing topic in chemical fields. Recently, we have witnessed many breakthroughs in the synthesis of single-atom catalysts (SACs) and their applications in catalytic systems. They have shown excellent activity, selectivity, stability, efficient atom utilization and can serve as an efficient bridge between homogeneous and heterogenous catalysis. Currently, most SACs are synthesized via a bottom-up strategy; however, drawbacks such as the difficulty in accessing high mass activity and controlling homogeneous coordination environments are inevitably encountered, restricting their potential use in the industrial area. In this regard, a novel top-down strategy has been recently developed to fabricate SACs to address these practical issues. The metal loading can be increased to 5% and the coordination environments can also be precisely controlled. This review highlights approaches to the chemical synthesis of SACs towards diverse chemical reactions, especially the recent advances in improving the mass activity and well-defined local structures of SACs. Also, challenges and opportunities for the SACs will be discussed in the later part.

Abstract:Significant developments in micro-electrical-mechanical systems (MEMS)-based devices for use in transmission electron microscopy (TEM) sample holders have recently led to the commercialization of windowed gas cells that now enable the atomic-resolution visualization of phenomena occurring during gas-solid interactions at atmospheric pressure. In situ atmospheric TEM study provides unique information that is beneficial to correlating the structure-properties relationship of catalytic nanomaterials, particularly under realistic gaseous reaction conditions. In this paper, we illustrate the capability of this novel in situ device as applied to our study of two catalyst systems: (1) In situ kinetic growth of free standing Pt nanowires as active catalysts toward oxygen reduction reaction (ORR); (2) In situ observation of facet-dependent oxidation of another promising ORR catalyst, Pt 3 Co nanoparticles.

Abstract:Novel concerted copolymerization, microphase separation, and crosslinking strategy for the synthesis of mesoporous SiCN with high surface area has been developed. Influence of pore size and surface area by changing length and ratio of porogen organic block is demonstrated. Longer the chain length and higher the porogen ratio trends the SiCN under mesoporous region with high surface area. Whereas shorter chain length porogen trends the SiCN under microporous region. The de Boer method, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET), and statistical thickness plot (t-plot) are utilised to confirm mesoporous and microporous textural properties of the SiCN. The same synthetic strategy is also extended to the synthesis of mesoporous SiCN supported metal nanoparticles. Well distributed in situ formation of gold and silver nanoparticles during the synthesis of mesoporous SiCN is emerged followed by successful prevention of sintering at 1000°C. Synthesized materials are mainly characterized by transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, powder X-ray diffrectometer and nitrogen physisorption techniques.

Abstract:The recent dramatic increase in research on isolated metal atoms has received extensive scientific interest in the new frontier of single‐atom catalysis. As newly advanced materials in catalysis, single‐atom catalysts (SACs) have received enormous interest from the perspectives of both scientific research and industrial applications due to their remarkable activity. In addition, other catalytic properties of single metal atoms, including stability and selectivity, can be further improved by tuning their electronic/geometric structures and modulating the metal–support interactions. SACs usually consist of dispersed atoms and appropriate support materials, which are employed to anchor, confine, and/or coordinate with isolated metal atoms. Therefore, the nature of single metal sites allows acquiring a maximum atom utilization approaching 100%, which is of significance, particularly for the development of noble‐metal‐based catalysts. In order to systematically understand the structure–property relationships and the underlying catalytic mechanisms relationship of SACs, the representative scientific research efforts in their synthesis strategies, catalytic applications, and performance regulation are discussed here. Typical single‐atom catalysis processes and the corresponding mechanisms in electrochemistry, photochemistry, organic synthesis, and biomedicine are also summarized. Finally, the challenges and prospects for the development of single‐atom catalysis and SACs are highlighted.

Abstract:With the controlled in-situ oxidation route, this study prepared primary sample of Pt-PANI/CNT, whose secondary sample of 20% Pt@C-N/CNT with high electro-activity was obtained after two-step heat-treatment.And then, with the spontaneous compounding route,high Pt loading (42.8%-64.6%) forPt@C-N/CNT secondary samples were prepared, the high electro-activity and stability of which were corroborated in electrode and anode catalyst in fuel cell.Through the "bottom-up" preparation along with the development for functional material, this study found that the controlled molecular assembly is the basis to achieve high Pt loading and high Pt mass utility, and the synthesis towards target reaction is the key to penetrate into the dynamical behaviors for functional materials.

Abstract:One key goal of heterogeneous catalysis study is to understand the correlation between the catalyst structure and its corresponding catalytic activity. In this review, we focus on recent strategies to synthesize well-defined Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS) nanostructured catalysts and their catalytic performance in FTS. The development of those promising catalysts highlights the potentials of nanostructured materials to unravel the complex and dynamic reaction mechanism, particularly under the in situ reaction conditions. The crucial factors associated with the catalyst compositions and structures and their effects on the FTS activities are discussed with an emphasis on the role of theoretical modeling and experimental results.

Abstract:Nanostructured materials of diverse architecture are ubiquitous in industrial catalysis. They offer exciting prospects to tackle various sustainability challenges faced by society. Since the introduction of the concept a century ago, researchers aspire to control the chemical identity, local environment and electronic properties of active sites on catalytic surfaces to optimize their reactivity in given applications. Nowadays, numerous strategies exist to tailor these characteristics with varying levels of atomic precision. Making headway relies upon the existence of analytical approaches able to resolve relevant structural features and remains challenging due to the inherent complexity even of the simplest heterogeneous catalysts, and to dynamic effects often occurring under reaction conditions. Computational methods play a complementary and ever-increasing role in pushing forward the design. Here, we examine how nanoscale engineering can enhance the selectivity and stability of catalysts. We highlight breakthroughs towards their commercialization and identify directions to guide future research and innovation.

Abstract:In situ monitoring of products generated by important heterogeneous catalytic reactions is of great significance for chemical industry, particularly when the products or intermediates are not sufficiently stable or occur at trace-level concentrations. It is therefore highly desirable to develop an integrated in situ catalysis and extraction method, which can simultaneously catalyze the reaction and enrich products while maintaining compatibility with analytical instrumentation. Herein, we propose an approach by depositing different types of metal nanocrystals, including gold, platinum, and palladium nanoparticles, onto fibrous silica microspheres coated fibers for integrated in situ catalysis and extraction. As a proof-of-concept, several typical chemical reactions, including the reduction of p-nitrophenol, epoxidation of styrene, oxidation of benzyl alcohol, and dechlorination of p-chlorophenol, were investigated to validate the feasibility of this method. Our results show that these coatings not only function as catalysts to accelerate the selected reactions but also serve as adsorbents to extract the reactants, intermediates, and products for direct gas chromatographic analysis, suggesting the viability of this approach for the in situ evaluation of catalytic processes. By this approach, the yield, selectivity, and kinetics of a reaction can be readily assessed. This approach can also be extended to investigate the catalytic performance of the same metal nanocrystals with different morphology, surface facet, structure, or surface functionalization. Abstract:The elucidation of structure–property relationships for supported metal catalysts requires atomic-scale descriptions and quantitative measurements of the relative population of various exposed active sites under reaction conditions. The requirement of describing catalyst structures under reaction conditions stems from the potential physical and chemical reconstruction that can be induced by changes in environment. Here we highlight our recent work, where catalyst characterization via a combination of in-situ transmission electron microscopy and infrared spectroscopy is used to provide sample-averaged, site-specific atomic level information on supported metal catalysts under reaction conditions. We show two illustrative examples using different reaction systems: the oxidation of CO over supported Pt and the reduction of CO2 over supported Rh. Using these examples we demonstrate differentiation of the catalytic reactivity of small supported metal clusters from isolated atoms and interrogate the catalytic consequences of structural transformations such as adsorbate-induced surface reconstruction of metal particles and adsorbate-mediated metal particle encapsulation by oxide supports. Insights gained from these techniques help elucidate structure–property relationships for these reactions including structure sensitivity and dynamic reactivity changes. We expect that this combination of characterization techniques will be generally useful for understanding structurally dynamic catalytic systems with atomic resolution.

Abstract:Wet chemical synthesis (WCS), especially under high temperatures, is one of the most frequently used strategies for nanostructured material construction, which has been used extensively in medical-, energy-, and environment-related applications. Although knowledge about the WCS process has been accumulated in the past two decades, the high temperature used in the process and multiphase nature of intermediates and products are key factors preventing the processes from rationalization. In this paper, by using multilevel in situ cells, we developed a strategy to monitor the reaction details of WCS processed in the solid, liquid, and gas phase simultaneously. This protocol has proven successful to reconstruct the WCS process of Fe5C2 nanoparticles (NPs) and unravel the complicated chemistry in the synthesis process.
