Abstract:We demonstrate the in situ synthesis of carbon doped porous silicon (Si/C) nanocomposites by a simple thermal displacement process between Mg2Si and inorganic gas CO2 in one-step. Via the decomposition of Mg2Si, the reduction process occurred between Mg and CO2, leading the uniform doping of many distributed tiny carbon nanoparticles into Si. Meanwhile, the porous structure was formed after an acid treatment. When worked as anodes for lithium-ion batteries, the as-prepared s-porous Si/C nanocomposites exhibited good cycling stability and high-rate capability, which were superior to the porous Si and porous Si/C nanocomposites. It was revealed that the enhanced electrochemical properties could be ascribed to the novel porous structure and doped carbon nanoparticles that can buffer the volume expansion, as well as enhance the electronic conductivity of Si. The reaction mechanism was well investigated by studying the influence of reaction temperature and raw Mg2Si particle size on the morphology and component of the porous Si/C nanocomposites.

Abstract:The Sb encapsulated in S and N co-doped three-dimensionally (3D) interconnected macroporous carbon composite (denoted as Sb@S,N-3DPC) has been fabricated by using silica opals as hard template following a carbonization process. The structural and morphological characterizations reveal the uniform 3D-network structure with the Sb nanoparticles embedded homogeneously in the carbon spherical shell. The Sb@S,N-3DPC electrode shows a high reversible capacity of 482 mAh g(-1) at 100 mA g(-1), displaying good capacity stability (similar to 93% of the initial discharge capacity after 500 cycles at 100 mA g-1). The electrode displays superior rate capability and ultralong cyclability (255 mAh g(-1) at 2 Ag-1 after 2000 cycles) and also reveals a good rate capability that maintains 160 mAh g(-1) at 5 Ag-1. The excellent electrochemical performance of the Sb@S,N-3DPC is attributed to the 3D-porous carbon network structure and uniform distribution of Sb nanoparticles in carbon matrix, enhancing the conductivity, holding the structure integrity, and thus improving the cycling performance of the anode material. In addition, sulfur and nitrogen co-doping introduced more defects and active sites to the carbon framework, thereby improving the interfacial adsorption and electrochemical behaviors. Abstract:Carbon microspheres (HCM) catalyzing the in‐situ polymerization and coating of Sb precursor is realized by solvothermal reaction in ethylene glycol (EG), and is further reduced into carbon‐coated Sb (Sb@HCM@C) at high temperature. The as‐prepared Sb@HCM@C anode shows better cycling performance at 1 A g−1 than the counterpart of Sb@C without carbon microspheres. Sodium‐ion batteries (SIBs) are attracting increasing attention due to their low cost of raw materials and high potential as an alternative to lithium‐ion batteries in energy storage systems. Owing to its favorable reaction potential (0.6 V vs Na/Na+) and high reversible capacity (660 mAh g−1), antimony (Sb) has been extensively studied as an anode material for SIBs. However, the poor cyclability of a pure Sb anode, induced by the mechanical stress mechanism, hinders its application. Herein, carbon microspheres catalyzing the in‐situ polymerization and coating of Sb are developed through a "solvothermal‐induced" synthesis method. During the solvothermal process in the presence of carbon microspheres, SbCl3 can react with ethylene glycol to generate an organic‐inorganic hybrid precursor. This precursor can be further reduced into carbon‐coated Sb with controllable carbon content. Benefiting from an in‐situ coating process that buffers the volume change of Sb, the as‐prepared carbon‐coated Sb anode shows improved Na‐storage performance. It achieves a capacity of 330 mAh g−1 (based on the total mass of Sb and carbon) at 0.1 A g−1 and exhibits good cycling stability at 1 A g−1. This work contributes to a facile approach for preparing a carbon‐coated metallic anode for SIBs.

Abstract:Sb-based anode materials attract a great deal of attention recently due to their high capacity. However, large volume change during sodiation and desodiation leads to poor cyclic performance. Introduction of inactive element would improve the cyclic performance but reduce the capacity significantly. In this work, Na-active Te was introduced and Sb2Te3/C nanocomposite has been successfully prepared by a high energy ball mill method. The Sb2Te3 nanocrystals with a size of about 20nm embedded in the carbon matrix are produced. The as-obtained Sb2Te3/C exhibits specific capacity of 360mAhg–1 with capacity retention of 93% after 400 cycles at 1Ag–1. In situ transmission electron microscopy study was carried out to investigate the origin of the high capacity retention. The synergetic effects of carbon matrix and nanosized particles can release stress efficiently during large volume change and suppress the aggregation of the pulverized nanoparticles.

Abstract:Sb-based materials are considered as promising anode materials for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) due to their excellent sodium storage capacities and suitable potentials. However, the Sb-based anodes usually suffer from intense volume expansion and severe pulverization during the alloying-dealloying process, resulting in poor cycling performance. Herein, a composite anode with Sb/Sb 2 O 3 nanoparticles embedded in N-doped porous carbon is prepared by the gas–solid dual template method. The volume change of the anode material is mitigated by the carbon layer enwrapping and the confinement of the porous structure. Nitrogen doping provides abundant sodium storage sites, thus enhancing the storage capacity of sodium ion. Furthermore, to gain the accurate kinetic interpretation of the electrochemical process, an ex-situ transmission electron microscope (TEM) characterization combined with distribution of relaxation times (DRT) is conducted. The Sb/Sb 2 O 3 @NPC-1.0 demonstrates excellent electrochemical performance, achieving 340.3 mAh g −1 at 1A g −1 , and maintains a capacity of 86.7 % after 1000 cycles. This work paves the way for the practical application of SIBs with high-performance and long-life Sb-based anodes.

Abstract:Integrating carbon-coating and nanostructuring has been considered as the most promising strategy to accommodate the dramatic volume expansion represented by high-capacity antimony (Sb) upon sodiation. Suitable coating source and synthetic strategy that are both economical and strong are yet to be explored. In this regard, by using renewable bio-oil as carbon source and self-wrapping precursor, robust Sb@C composite anode with Sb nanoparticles homogeneously impregnated into the cross-linked 2D ultrathin carbon nanosheets is developed via a facile NaCl template-assisted self-assembly and followed carbothermal reduction method. Such judiciously crafted interconnected macroporous framework can mitigate of mechanical stress and alleviate the volume change of inner Sb, guaranteeing high-performance sodiumion battery anode. At a current density of 0.1 A g(-1), ultrahigh reversible capacity of 520 mAh g(-1) can be achieved. Notably, a stable capacity of 391 mAh g(-1)is even retained after 500 cycles at 1 A g(-1). Abstract:In this work, tin-antimony/carbon composites porous fibers were successfully synthesized by an electrospinning method combined with two-step heat treatment processes, in which SnCl2 and SbCl3 were used as tin and antimony sources, and polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) were used as binders and pore-forming agents. The as-synthesized tin-antimony/carbon composites were systematically characterized by X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Energy-Dispersive Spectrometer (EDS), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), and Thermogravimetric Analysis-Differential Scanning Calorimetry (TG-DSC). The results indicate that the composite material consists of one-dimensional nitrogen-doped carbon porous fibers as the main matrix, with a three-dimensional network structure in which Sn, SnO2, and SnSb particles are encapsulated. Furthermore, the tin-antimony/carbon composites porous fibers were utilized as self-supported negative electrode for sodium-ion batteries. The results showed that the SNbM-2 sample electrode calcined at 800 °C demonstrated the best cycling stability and rate capability among all the sample electrodes, with a discharge capacity of 319.5 mAh·g-1 maintained after 100 cycles at a current density of 0.1 A·g-1. The excellent electrochemical performance of the SNbM-2 sample electrode is benefited from its unique porous structure and the carbon fiber network structure encapsulating Sn, SnO2, and SnSb particles, which could effectively shorten the Na+ ion transport distance and mitigate electrode volume expansion.

Abstract:Antimony (Sb) nanoparticles (SbNP) encapsulated in multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) matrix has been fabricated by a facile two-step ball milling strategy, including a sand milling process to prepare Sb nanoparticles and following high-energy ball milling to synthesize SbNP-MWCNT composite. As an anode material for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs), the SbNP-MWCNT composite with high Sb content (80%) can deliver a reversible capacity of 471.1 mAh g(-1) at 50 mA g(-1) with an initial coulombic efficiency of 73.5%, excellent cycling stability (94.1% capacity retention at 800 mA g(-1)) and high rate capability (210.7 mAh g(-1) at 3200 mA g(-1)). The excellent electrochemical performance of the SbNP-MWCNT composite results from the synergistic effect of downsizing Sb particles and combining MWCNTs. Controlled Synthesis of Sb Nanostructures and Their Conversion to CoSb3Nanoparticle Chains for Li-Ion Battery Electrodes

Abstract:Nanostructured Sb was prepared through a simple polyol process. Either Sb nanoparticles (Sb NP) or nanowires (Sb NW) were obtained by adjusting the concentration of surfactant. Electrochemical analyses revealed that the resultant Sb crystals displayed high charge storage capacities as Li-ion battery electrodes and relatively poor cycling retention during the charge discharge process. For instance, the capacity was 560-584 mA h/g during the second cycle, which decreased to 120-200 mA h/g during the 70th cycle at a rate of 0.2 C. Thus, Sb NPs were reacted with Co precursors to form one-dimensional (I-D) NP chains wrapped in a polyvinyl pyridine layer, and the length of the NP chains could be adjusted by varying the concentration of polyvinyl pyridine. Through a controlled annealing process, the polyvinyl pyridine layer was converted to amorphous carbon, which led to the formation of 1-D core shell structures with CoSb3 NP chains entrapped in the carbon layer. Although CoSb3 NP chains with a carbon shell displayed a lower initial charge storage capacity than Sb nanostructures, improved cycling performance was observed. The capacity was 468 mA h/g during the second cycle, which dropped to 421 mA h/g during the 70th cycle at a rate of 0.2 C. Compared to CoSb3 produced via other techniques, CoSb3/C NP chains displayed higher cycling stability, because of the presence of a carbon buffer layer.

Abstract:A Sb/graphene nanohybrid has been synthesized by a facile in situ solvothermal route using SbCl3 and graphite oxide as the precursors and NaBH4 as the reducing agent. Microstructural observation reveals the sheet-like nanostructure consisting of Sb nanocrystals (50-100 nm) attached on few-layer graphene nanosheets. The in situ introduced graphene uniformly disperses the Sb nanocrystals, while the attached Sb nanocrystals hinder the restacking of the graphene nanosheets. The introduction of graphene remarkably improves the electrochemical Li and Na-storage properties of Sb due to the combined buffering, confining and conducting effects of graphene. The underlying mechanism for the enhanced Li and Na-storage properties has been investigated by chemical diffusion coefficient and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurement. Abstract:Heteroatom-doped carbon nanomaterials with well-defined porous are used as anode materials for SIBs due to their exceptional structural characteristics. In this work, porous N-doped carbon networks composed with ultrathin carbon nanosheets were synthesized via the direct pyrolysis of Vitamin B5. The content of nitrogen, specific surface area, porous structure of the N-doped carbon nanosheet networks were adjusted by changing reaction temperatures. The formation mechasim of the ultrathin N-doped carbon nanosheet networks was also proposed. The generation of calcium carbonate/calcium oxide used as a self-template renders the formation of the porous structure via thermal treatment. The optimized samples possess a superior lithium and sodium storage: 1534mAhg−1 at 100mAg−1 vs. Li/Li+ and 335mAhg−1 at 100mAg−1 vs. Na/Na+, with nearly 100% cycling Coulombic efficiency, remarkable cycling retention and high rate capacity. Additionally, good electrocatalytic activity for ORR via a 4e−1 pathway determines that the resulting primary Zn-air battery showed high discharge power energy density (80mWcm−2), high reversibility and stability over continuous cycles.

Abstract:Antimony (Sb) demonstrates ascendant reactive activation with lithium ions thanks to its distinctive puckered layer structure. Compared with graphite, Sb can reach a considerable theoretical specific capacity of 660 mAh g−1 by constituting Li3Sb safer reaction potential. Hereupon, with a self-supported organic carbon as a three-dimensional polymer network structure, Sb/carbon (3DPNS-Sb/C) composites were produced through a hydrothermal reaction channel followed by a heat disposal operation. The unique structure shows uniformitarian Sb nanoparticles wrapped in a self-supported organic carbon, alleviating the volume extension of innermost Sb alloying, and conducive to the integrality of the construction. When used as anodes for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), 3DPNS-Sb/C exhibits a high invertible specific capacity of 511.5 mAh g−1 at a current density of 0.5 A g−1 after 100 cycles and a remarkable rate property of 289.5 mAh g−1 at a current density of 10 A g−1. As anodes, LIBs demonstrate exceptional electrochemical performance.

Abstract:Nano-solid spherical Nb 2 O 5 /nitrogen-doped carbon (NC) composite is obtained by the hydrothermal method followed by a calcination procedure. The Nb 2 O 5 /NC composite exhibits good rate performance and sustainable cyclic stability (144 mAh g −1 at 1000 mAh g −1 upon 2000 charge–discharge cycles) as an anode material in Na-ion batteries (SIBs). The excellent performance of the Nb 2 O 5 /NC composite is attributed to its unique nanosphere structure, in which Nb 2 O 5 nanocrystals embedded in porous NC matrix can restrain agglomeration of Nb 2 O 5 nanocrystals and ensure electrolyte accessibility, and the NC matrix can provide effective active sites and increase ions/electrons transfer. This work offers a new method to fabricate nano-solid spherical Nb 2 O 5 /NC composite with good Na + storage property, which can be extended for synthesizing other metal oxide/NC composite as SIB anode.

Abstract:A facile electrospinning technique with subsequent pyrolysis is employed to prepare porous carbon nanofibers containing uniformly dispersed ultrasmall Sb nanoparticles (denoted as Sb/CNF). This useful design provides distinct advantages for Sb-based anodes in both sodium-ion batteries and potassium-ion batteries. As a sodium-ion battery anode, the porous Sb/CNF-0.5 composite exhibits a high reversible capacity of 462 mA h g−1 at 100 mA g−1 after 100 cycles. High cyclic stability with 90.6% capacity retention after 500 cycles at 500 mA g−1 was achieved for the optimized electrode. For potassium storage, Sb/CNF-0.5 exhibits a high capacity of 450 mA h g−1 over 100 cycles at 100 mA g−1, and a stable capacity of 403 mA h g−1 over 500 cycles at 500 mA g−1. These superior electrochemical properties are attributed to the unique structure of porous nanofibers confining ultrasmall Sb nanoparticles. Porous CNF not only functions as a conductive support to improve the electrical conductivity of the electrode, but also provides a buffering matrix for releasing the mechanical stress caused by Na+/K+ insertion/extraction efficiently. Furthermore, according to molecular dynamics simulations, the optimized mesoporous structure in CNF can offer a more facile access to the electrolyte comparing to the microporous structure, thus improving the electrochemical energy storage performance.

Abstract:A CoSb3-nanocrystals/graphene nanocomposite was synthesized by a facile in situ one-pot solvothermal route. CoSb3 nanocrystals (around 10 nm) with a narrow size distribution were uniformly dispersed and supported by the graphene sheets, forming a unique hybrid nanostructure. The electrochemical Li-storage performance of the nanocomposite was investigated as a potential application in Li-ion batteries. The nanocomposite exhibits an obviously improved electrochemical performance compared to bare CoSb3. The enhancement of the electrochemical performance could be attributed to the introduction of the graphene that not only constructs a two-dimensional conductive network but also disperses and confines the CoSb3 nanoparticles. The electronic conductivity and ac impedance were measured to understand the underlying mechanism for the enhanced electrochemical performance.

Abstract:Nanoparticle-based electrode materials have sparked enormous excitement in the sodium-ion battery community because of potentially fast transport kinetics. However, they may suffer from many challenging static and dynamic problems, such as agglomeration of nanoparticles, high contact resistance, volume change, and instability of solid electrolyte interphase. Herein, we develop inter-connected 2D carbon nanosheets in which ultrasmall 0D Sb nanodots are embedded homogenously through a previously unexplored “top-down” strategy. Starting from the laminar structure K3Sb3P2O14, H3Sb3P2O14 nanosheets are exfoliated by ion exchange and then serve as templates for the synthesis of carbon sheets and Sb nanodots. Such combination of multi-dimensional and multi-scale nanostructures in the electrode materials lead to excellent electron/ion transport kinetics and pronounced integrity of the electrode structure on cycling, providing a promising pathway for developing advanced electrode materials in terms of reversibility, rate capability and cycle life.
