Abstract:Hydrogen energy, a new type of clean and efficient energy, has assumed precedence in decarbonizing and building a sustainable carbon-neutral economy. Recently, hydrogen production from water splitting has seen considerable advancements owing to its advantages such as zero carbon emissions, safety, and high product purity. To overcome the large energy barrier and high cost of water splitting, numerous efficient electrocatalysts have been designed and reported. However, various difficulties in promoting the industrialization of electrocatalytic water splitting remain. Further, as high-performance electrocatalysts that satisfy industrial requirements are urgently needed, a better understanding of water-splitting systems is required. In this paper, the latest progress in water electrolysis is reviewed, and experimental evidence from in situ/operando spectroscopic surveys and computational analyses is summarized to present a mechanistic understanding of hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions. Furthermore, some promising strategies, including alloying, morphological engineering, interface construction, defect engineering, and strain engineering for designing and synthesizing electrocatalysts are highlighted. We believe that this review will provide a knowledge-guided design in fundamental science and further inspire technical engineering developments for constructing efficient electrocatalysts for water splitting.

Abstract:Developing a bifunctional electrocatalyst with remarkable performance viable for overall water splitting is increasingly essential for industrial-scale renewable energy conversion. However, the current electrocatalyst still requires a large cell voltage to drive water splitting due to the unsuitable adsorption/desorption capacity of reaction intermediates, which seriously hinders the practical application of water splitting. Herein, a unique SiOx/Ru nanosheet (NS) material was proposed as a high-performance electrocatalyst for overall water splitting. The SiOx/Ru NSs show superior performance in the hydrogen evolution reaction with a low overpotential of 23 mV (@ 10 mA cm-2) and excellent stability for nearly 200 h (@ 10 mA cm-2) in 1 M KOH. By means of the introduction of SiOx, it is beneficial for balancing the local charge density of the surrounding Ru sites. The suitable electronic coupling between the d-band electrons of Ru and the adsorbed species effectively balances the adsorption and desorption of reaction intermediates on the surface. As a result, the catalyst also exhibits overall water splitting activity with a cell voltage of only 1.496 V to reach the current density of 10 mA cm-2. The present work opens up a new strategy for designing high-performance electrocatalysts for water splitting.

Abstract:A novel silver oxides oxygen evolving catalyst (Ag-OEC) for hydrogen production by water splitting was formed in situ on an indium tin oxide anode, in a near-neutral potassium tetraborate (K(2)B(4)O(7)) electrolyte. The catalyst exhibited high activity and low overpotential for O(2) evolution under mild conditions. The main functional composition of the catalyst was a redox couple of Ag(2)O/AgO. Catalytic activity during oxygen evolution was evaluated by cyclic voltammetry and Tafel plot. The effects of the concentration, temperature, and pH of K(2)B(4)O(7) solution on the catalyst, and the Faradaic efficiency of the oxygen evolving reaction were examined. The results show that the Ag-OEC exhibits excellent oxygen evolution properties, with an oxygen evolving overpotential of 318 mV at a current density of 1 mA/cm(2). Metal-Free Catalyst with Large Carbon Defects for Efficient Direct Overall Water Splitting in Air at Room Pressure

Abstract:Hydrogen can be used as a conventional clean energy resource, only by obtaining it in a cheap, simple, and feasible way. From the perspective of solar energy utilization, photocatalytic water splitting is essentially limited by high electric energy and intermittent solar energy. Here, we demonstrate that the carbon defects could decompose water directly by using low-value mechanical energy in the daily environment without using the sacrificial agent. The prepared metal-free carbon catalyst (OPC-900) with rich graphene topological defects shows several redox states in acetonitrile, which can accumulate redox equivalents and respond for overall water splitting in air at room pressure. Under stirring or light conditions, charges can be created and accumulated on the catalyst surface and split water into H2 and O2 in low conductivity medium. The mechanical energy conversion efficiency of stirring in ultrapure water is 7.01%. Our work combines visible light with low-value mechanical energy for widespread decomposition of water to produce hydrogen in air under normal pressure.
Non-noble Metal Single-Atom Catalysts Prepared by Wet Chemical Method and Their Applications in Electrochemical Water Splitting

Abstract:Water splitting by electrolysis is an appealing pathway for sustainable hydrogen production. The practical performance of water splitting is highly dependent on the efficiency of electrocatalysts, which can promote the anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) or cathodic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Downsizing the metal nanostructures to atomic level to construct single-atom catalysts (SACs) has attracted enormous attention due to its distinct advantages in maximizing the efficiency of metal atom utilization and enhancing activity over corresponding metal nanoparticles. Research on SACs towards electrochemical water splitting application is an emerging field and intensive investigations have been focused on their rational syntheses and applications in HER/OER. In this review, we focus on the wet chemical method developed to prepare non-noble metal based SACs with an emphasis on the synthetic strategies and structure-activity relationship between single metal atoms and catalytic activity. Finally, the challenges and future opportunities for application of single-atom catalysts in water splitting are briefly addressed. Highly Efficient Water Splitting Driven by Zinc-Air Batteries with a Single Catalyst Incorporating Rich Active Species

Abstract:Multifunctional electrocatalysts based on earth-abundant elements are key for the development of Integrated Energy Systems (IES) such as electrolytic water splitting powered by metal-air batteries. Herein, hierarchical CuCoNC nanowire arrays are constructed on copper foam, enriching multiple active species on the catalytic scaffolds that lead to remarkable trifunctional activities of OER with eta(10) = 245 mV, HER with eta(10) = 59 mV and ORR comparable to Pt/C. While for overall water splitting a cell voltage of only 1.78 V is required to achieve a high current density of 500 mA cm(-2), for Zn-air batteries (ZABs) a highly stabilized round-trip efficiency of > 58% is achieved for over 360 h under 10 mA cm(-2). Ultimately, a highly efficient IES of ZAB-powered water splitting employing a single catalyst is demonstrated with a hydrogen evolution rate of 69 mu Ls(-1), showcasing a smart material design in simultaneously achieving multi-functionality and maximizing the energy efficiency.

Abstract:Scaling up electrochemical water splitting is nowadays in high demand for hydrogen economy implementation. Tremendous efforts over the past decade have been focused on exploring alternative catalytic materials, including a variety of earth-abundant transition-metal-based catalysts, to replace traditional noble metals such as Pt, Ir, or Ru. Nevertheless, few efforts have been carried out for (1) scalable catalyst synthesis on current collectors and (2) practical device design toward large-scale H2 generation. Herein, we designed a modular alkaline water-splitting electrolyzer system with scaled-up metal foam electrodes covered by low-cost NiMo alloy and Ni3Fe oxide for efficient hydrogen evolution and oxygen evolution, respectively. An electrolyte circulation system facilitates the mass transport and thus can further boost the H2 generation particularly under large currents. As a result, the overall water-splitting performance of one-unit cell with a dimension of 10 × 10 cm2 under room temperature presents an early onset voltage of 1.54 V and delivered practical currents of 20 and 55 A (9.1 and 25.0 L/h H2 generation) under 2.2 and 2.9 V without iR compensations, respectively. This demonstration could stimulate new focuses in water splitting toward more practical applications.

Abstract:As a clean energy carrier, hydrogen has priority in decarbonization to build sustainable and carbon-neutral economies due to its high energy density and no pollutant emission upon combustion. Electrochemical water splitting driven by renewable electricity to produce green hydrogen with high-purity has been considered to be a promising technology. Unfortunately, the reaction of water electrolysis always requires a large excess potential, let alone the large-scale application (e.g., >500 mA cm-2 needs a cell voltage range of 1.8-2.4 V). Thus, developing cost-effective and robust transition metal electrocatalysts working at high current density is imperative and urgent for industrial electrocatalytic water splitting. In this review, the strategies and requirements for the design of self-supported electrocatalysts are summarized and discussed. Subsequently, the fundamental mechanisms of water electrolysis (OER or HER) are analyzed, and the required important evaluation parameters, relevant testing conditions and potential conversion in exploring electrocatalysts working at high current density are also introduced. Specifically, recent progress in the engineering of self-supported transition metal-based electrocatalysts for either HER or OER, as well as overall water splitting (OWS), including oxides, hydroxides, phosphides, sulfides, nitrides and alloys applied in the alkaline electrolyte at large current density condition is highlighted in detail, focusing on current advances in the nanostructure design, controllable fabrication and mechanistic understanding for enhancing the electrocatalytic performance. Finally, remaining challenges and outlooks for constructing self-supported transition metal electrocatalysts working at large current density are proposed. It is expected to give guidance and inspiration to rationally design and prepare these electrocatalysts for practical applications, and thus further promote the practical production of hydrogen via electrochemical water splitting.

Abstract:Abstract Highly efficient electrochemical water splitting is of prime importance in hydrogen energy but is suffered from the slow kinetics at the anodic oxygen evolution reaction. Herein, combining the surface activation with the heterostructure construction strategy, the CoP/Fe‐Co9S8 heterostructures as the pre‐catalyst for highly efficient oxygen evolution are successfully synthesized. The catalyst only needs 156 mV to reach 10 mA cm−2 and keeps stable for more than 150 h. Inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry, in situ Raman spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations verify that the introduction of Fe can promote the formation of highly active Co(IV)–O sites and lead to a self‐termination of surface reconstruction, which eventually creates a highly active and stable oxygen evolution catalytic surface. Besides, the catalyst also demonstrates high hydrogen evolution reaction activity with an overpotential of 62 mV@10 mA cm−2. Benefiting from its bifunctionality and self‐supporting property, the membrane electrode assembly electrolyzer equipped with these catalysts achieves high overall water splitting efficiency of 1.68 V@1 A cm−2.

Abstract:In recent years, as a green renewable energy production technology, electrochemical water splitting has high development potential. Many materials have been reported as successful catalysts in the water-splitting field. However, it still keeps up a huge challenge to produce bifunctional electrocatalysts with efficient and sustainable generation of hydrogen and oxygen simultaneously. Herein, we have successfully developed oxygen vacancies abundant CuCo layered double oxides (Ov-CuCo-LDO) hollow nanotube arrays (HNTAs) loaded on nickel foam as advanced electrocatalysts for total water splitting. When the current density was 10 mA•cm-2, the Ov-CuCo-LDO HNTAs exhibited outstanding onset overpotentials of 53.9 and 72.5 mV for hydrogen evolution and oxygen evolution reactions (HER and OER) in alkaline medium, respectively, because of the bimetallic synergistic effect between cobalt and copper and the unique hollow porous structure. In addition, the as-assembled Ov-CuCo-LDO||Ov-CuCo-LDO electrolytic cell shows a small potential of 1.55 V to deliver a current density of 10 mA•cm-2. Meanwhile, it has remarkable durability after long-term overall water splitting for more than 20 hours. The research results in this paper are of great meaning to the practical application of the water decomposition process, which provides a clear and in-depth understanding of the preliminary of robust and efficient multifunctional electrocatalysts for entire water splitting.

Abstract:In pursuit of a sustainable future powered by renewable energy, hydrogen production through water splitting should achieve high energy efficiency with economical materials. Here, we present a nanofluidic electrolyzer that leverages overlapping cathode and anode electric double layers (EDLs) to drive the splitting of pure water. The strong electric field within the overlapping EDLs enhances ion migration and facilitates the dissociation of water molecules. Acidic and basic environments, that are created in situ at cathode and anode, respectively, enable the use of non-precious metal catalysts. All these merits allow the reactor to exhibit a current density of 2.8 A·cm-2 at 1.7 V with a nickel anode. This paves the way towards a new type of water electrolyzers without membranes, supporting electrolytes, or precious metal catalysts.

Interface Engineered Co, Ni, Fe, Cu Oxide Hybrids with Biphasic Structures for Water Splitting with Enhanced Activity

Abstract:Developing high-performance catalysts for water splitting via renewable electricity is of great significance for the clean production of hydrogen. This work reports rational design and controllable fabrication of metal oxide hybrid catalyst CoNiFe2O5 center dot 2CuO with unique biphasic microstructures for electrochemical water splitting. Benefited from the presence of CuO nanoparticles as the second phase, more defects and active sites were formed around the interfaces of CoNiFe2O5 and CuO, which led to excellent performances for electrocatalytic water splitting. In particular, the catalyst exhibited outstanding activity for hydrogen evolution reaction with a small over potential of 30 mV to reach a current density of 10 mA cm(-2) and showed a higher turnover frequency (0.3 s(-1)) than commercial catalyst Pt/C (0.1 s(-1)) under an overpotential of 50 mV. Moreover, it also displayed good activity for oxygen evolution reaction with an overpotential of 264 mV at 10 mA cm(-2). Using CoNiFe2O5 center dot 2CuO as the catalyst for electrode pair to construct a cell, a very low cell voltage of 1.53 V is enough to achieve overall water splitting at 10 mA cm(-2) in 1 M KOH electrolyte, and the cell could maintain the stable performance at 10 mA cm(-2) within 100 h. The as-prepared metal oxide hybrids with biphasic microstructures may have promising application potentials in water splitting. (C) 2021 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Realizing sustainable hydrogen fuel production through water electrolysis is crucial to achieving carbon neutrality. However, the development of cost-effective electrocatalysts continues to be a challenge. Eco-designed electrocatalysts derived from wastes and naturally abundant materials have recently received increasing attention. The development of eco-designed electrocatalysts is of great environmental and economic significance and makes green hydrogen more accessible to the wider community. Here, recent advances in eco-designed electrocatalysts for water splitting are summarized. Eco-design strategies such as pyrolysis, ball milling, wet-chemical methods, and electrochemical treatment are first analyzed. Recent achievements in eco-designed electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and overall water splitting (OWS) are then detailed, with an emphasis on analyzing the eco-design strategy-catalyst property-catalytic performance correlation. Perspectives in this blooming field for a greener hydrogen economy are finally outlined.

Abstract:Water splitting is a promising sustainable technology to produce high purity hydrogen, but its commercial application remains a giant challenge due to the kinetically sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER). In this work, a time- and energy-saving approach to directly grow NiFe-layered double hydroxide (NiFe-LDH) nanosheets on nickel foam under ambient temperature and pressure is reported. These NiFe-LDH nanosheets are vertically rooted in nickel foam and interdigitated together to form a highly porous array, leading to numerous exposed active sites, reduced resistance of charge/mass transportation and enhanced mechanical stability. As self-supported electrocatalyst, the representative sample (NF@NiFe-LDH-1.5-4) shows an excellent large-current-density catalytic activity for OER in alkaline electrolyte, requiring low overpotentials of 190 and 220 mV to reach the current densities of 100 and 657 mA cm-2 with a Tafel slope of 38.1 mV dec-1 . In addition, NF@NiFe-LDH-1.5-4 as an overall water splitting electrocatalyst can stably achieve a large current density of 200 mA cm-2 over 300 h at a low cell voltage of 1.83 V, meeting the requirement of industrial hydrogen production. This exceedingly simple and ultrafast synthesis of low-cost and highly active large-current-density OER electrocatalysts can propel the commercialization of hydrogen producing technology via water splitting.

Abstract:Transition metal materials have received widespread attention in the field of water decomposition due to their abundant production, good performance, and good stability. We have summarized the reaction principles of electrocatalytic hydrolysis in HER and OER processes. Introduced the research and development of some catalysts. In the end, we provided possible ideas and discussions for future research and development. Hydrogen has enormous commercial potential as a secondary energy source because of its high calorific value, clean combustion byproducts, and multiple production methods. Electrocatalytic water splitting is a viable alternative to the conventional methane steam reforming technique, as it operates under mild conditions, produces high‐quality hydrogen, and has a sustainable production process that requires less energy. Electrocatalysts composed of precious metals like Pt, Au, Ru, and Ag are commonly used in the investigation of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Nevertheless, their limited availability and expensive cost restrict practical use. In contrast, electrocatalysts that do not contain precious metals are readily available, cost‐effective, environmentally friendly, and possess electrocatalytic performance equal to that of noble metals. However, considerable research effort must be devoted to create cost‐effective and high‐performing catalysts. This article provides a comprehensive examination of the reaction mechanism involved in electrocatalytic water splitting in both acidic and basic environments. Additionally, recent breakthroughs in catalysts for both the hydrogen evolution and oxygen evolution reactions are also discussed. The structure‐activity relationship of the catalyst was deep‐going discussed, together with the prospects of current obstacles and potential for electrocatalytic water splitting, aiming at provide valuable perspectives for the advancement of economical and efficient electrocatalysts on an industrial scale.

Abstract:Electrochemical overall water splitting is attracting a broad focus as a promising strategy for converting the electrical output of renewable resources into chemical fuels, specifically oxygen and hydrogen. However, the urgent challenge in water electrolysis is to search for low-cost, high-efficiency catalysts based on earth-abundant elements as an alternative to the high-cost but effective noble metal-based catalysts. The transition metal-based catalysts are more appealing than the noble metal catalysts because of its low cost, high performance and long stability. Some recent advances for the development in overall water splitting are reviewed in terms of transition metal-based oxides, carbides, phosphides, sulfides, and hybrids of their mixtures as hybrid bifunctional electrocatalysts. Concentrating on different catalytic mechanisms, recent advances in their structural design, controllable synthesis, mechanistic insight, and performance-enhancing strategies are proposed. The challenges and prospects for the future development of transition metal-based bifunctional electrocatalysts are also addressed.

Boosting Alkaline Hydrogen and Oxygen Evolution Kinetic Process of Tungsten Disulfide‐Based Heterostructures by Multi‐Site Engineering

Abstract:Alkaline water electrolysis is an advanced technology for scalable H2 production using surplus electricity from intermittent energy sources, but it remains challenging for non-noble electrocatalysts to split water into hydrogen and oxygen efficiently, especially for tungsten disulfide (WS2 )-based catalysts. Density functional theory calculations in combination with experimental study are used to establish a multi-site engineering strategy for developing robust WS2 -based hybrid electrocatalyst on mesoporous bimetallic nitride (Ni3 FeN) nanoarrays for bifunctional water splitting. This ingenious design endows the catalyst with numerous edge sites chemically bonded with the conductive scaffold, which are favorable for water dissociation and hydrogen adsorption. Benefiting from the synergistic advantages, the N-WS2 /Ni3 FeN hybrid exhibits exceptional bifunctional properties for hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions (HER and OER) in base with excellent large-current durability, requiring 84 mV to afford 10 mA cm-2 for HER, and 240 mV at 100 mA cm-2 for OER, respectively. Assembling the catalytic materials as both the anode and cathode to construct an electrolyzer, it is actualized very good activities for overall water splitting with only 1.5 V to deliver 10 mA cm-2 , outperforming the IrO2 (+) //Pt(-) coupled electrodes and many non-noble bifunctional electrocatalysts thus far. This work provides a promising avenue for designing WS2 -based heterogeneous electrocatalysts for water electrolysis.
