Abstract:Hydrogen (H2) has been regarded as a promising alternative to fossil-fuel energy. Green H2 produced via water electrolysis (WE) powered by renewable energy could achieve a zero-carbon footprint. Considerable attention has been focused on developing highly active catalysts to facilitate the reaction kinetics and improve the energy efficiency of WE. However, the stability of the electrocatalysts hampers the commercial viability of WE. Few studies have elucidated the origin of catalyst degradation. In this review, we first discuss the WE mechanism, including anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and cathodic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Then, we provide strategies used to enhance the stability of electrocatalysts. After that, the deactivation mechanisms of the typical commercialized HER and OER catalysts, including Pt, Ni, RuO2, and IrO2, are summarized. Finally, the influence of fluctuating energy on catalyst degradation is highlighted and in situ characterization methodologies for understanding the dynamic deactivation processes are described. The stability of electrocatalysts has a significant influence on energy efficiency and productivity for industrial green hydrogen production. This review highlights recent research advances regarding the deactivation mechanism in water electrolysis and related in situ/operando techniques for dynamic mechanism studies. image

Abstract:As a clean energy carrier, hydrogen has priority in decarbonization to build sustainable and carbon‐neutral economies due to its high energy density and no pollutant emission upon combustion. Electrochemical water splitting driven by renewable electricity to produce green hydrogen with high‐purity has been considered to be a promising technology. However, the efficiency of water electrolysis is limited by the catalyst material employed, thereby the pursuit of highly efficient catalysts is of paramount scientific significance. This review focuses on the synthesis of electrocatalysts for the hydrogen/oxygen evolution reaction (HER/OER) through various strategies such as hydrogen spillover, heterostructure construction, element doping, monatomic construction, LDH structure modification, high entropy alloy, and other approaches. Abstract:Developing the cost-effective and robust large current density catalysts is vital for industrial electrocatalytic water splitting. However, most of reported successful catalysts have a small tested range and the current density is usually less than 100 mA cm−2, which is far from meeting the actual application demands. This review first summarizes the recent reported self-supported transition metal-based catalysts that can run stably at high current density. Where their catalytic performance in three important reactions of electrolytic cells: hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and overall water splitting (OWS) have been introduced, respectively. Meanwhile, some design requirements, relevant test conditions and potential conversion in exploring large current catalysts have been generalized. Finally, some perspectives for further development of large current density-based electrocatalysts are proposed. This work may provide the guidance and reference for rational design and exploitation of self-supported high current density electrocatalysts, thus further promoting the large-scale application of water splitting.

Abstract:We describe a malformation syndrome of bilateral cryptomicrotia, brachytelomesophalangy, hypoplastic toe nails, and excess fingertip arch patterns in a chromosomally and mentally normal mother and son. Familial occurrence of this malformation complex has not been described previously and the manifestations of the patients do not correspond to those of any known malformation syndromes. The disorder in this family may be attributable to the pleiotropic effect of an autosomal or an X-linked dominant gene.

Abstract:Hydrogen produced from water electrolysis is a promising alternative to fossil fuels. The oxygen evolution reaction (OER), which occurs at the anode, involves a four-electron transfer process and requires a large potential to overcome the energy barrier. To address this challenge and reduce the cost associated with noble-metal catalysts, transition metal (TM) based catalysts offer a cost-effective solution. Compared to powder catalysts, TM-based catalysts in situ grown on conductive substrates are more suitable for industrial hydrogen production at large current density. Additionally, oxidation reactions with lower thermodynamic potential than OER have been explored as alternatives to reduce power consumption in electrohydrolysis hydrogen production. In this review, we provide an overview of the evaluation criterion, selection of substrate, preparation methods for self-supporting catalysts and their respective advantages and disadvantages. We also discuss the principle of active site selection and various strategies for enhancing the activity of catalysts, including metal doping, heteroatom doping, co-doping of both, heterojunctions, amorphization, compositing with conductive materials, morphology engineering, and creating superhydrophilic and superaerophobic surface. We then examine alternative anode reactions, such as urea oxidation, hydrazine oxidation, glucose oxidation and alcohol oxidation reactions. Finally, we outline the current challenges in the design of electrocatalysts and anodic oxidation reactions and provide an outlook on the future of hydrogen production using TM-based self-supported electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Electrochemical overall water splitting is attracting a broad focus as a promising strategy for converting the electrical output of renewable resources into chemical fuels, specifically oxygen and hydrogen. However, the urgent challenge in water electrolysis is to search for low-cost, high-efficiency catalysts based on earth-abundant elements as an alternative to the high-cost but effective noble metal-based catalysts. The transition metal-based catalysts are more appealing than the noble metal catalysts because of its low cost, high performance and long stability. Some recent advances for the development in overall water splitting are reviewed in terms of transition metal-based oxides, carbides, phosphides, sulfides, and hybrids of their mixtures as hybrid bifunctional electrocatalysts. Concentrating on different catalytic mechanisms, recent advances in their structural design, controllable synthesis, mechanistic insight, and performance-enhancing strategies are proposed. The challenges and prospects for the future development of transition metal-based bifunctional electrocatalysts are also addressed.

Abstract:Hydrogen is now recognized as the primary alternative to fossil fuels due to its renewable, safe, high-energy density and environmentally friendly properties. Efficient hydrogen production through water splitting has laid the foundation for sustainable energy technologies. However, when hydrogen production is scaled up to industrial levels, operating at high current densities introduces unique challenges. It is necessary to design advanced electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reactions (HERs) under high current densities. This review will briefly introduce the challenges posed by high current densities on electrocatalysts, including catalytic activity, mass diffusion, and catalyst stability. In an attempt to address these issues, various electrocatalyst design strategies are summarized in detail. In the end, our insights into future challenges for efficient large-scale industrial hydrogen production from water splitting are presented. This review is expected to guide the rational design of efficient high-current density water electrolysis electrocatalysts and promote the research progress of sustainable energy.

Abstract:Hydrogen economy is imagined where excess electric energy from renewable sources stored directly by electrochemical water splitting into hydrogen is later used as clean hydrogen fuel. Electrocatalysts with the superhigh current density (1000 mA cm−2-level) and long-term durability (over 1000 h), especially at low overpotentials (<300 mV), seem extremely critical for green hydrogen from experiment to industrialization. Along the way, numerous innovative ideas are proposed to design high efficiency electrocatalysts in line with industrial requirements, which also stimulates the understanding of the mass/charge transfer and mechanical stability during the electrochemical process. It is of great necessity to summarize and sort out the accumulating knowledge in time for the development of laboratory to commercial use in this promising field. This review begins with examining the theoretical principles of achieving high-efficiency electrocatalysts with high current densities and excellent durability. Special attention is paid to acquaint efficient strategies to design perfect electrocatalysts including atomic structure regulation for electrical conductivity and reaction energy barrier, array configuration constructing for mass transfer process, and multiscale coupling for high mechanical strength. Finally, the importance and the personal perspective on future opportunities and challenges, is highlighted.

Abstract:Electrocatalytic water splitting for generating green hydrogen is regarded as one of the most promising pathways to change the global energy structure and achieve the global mission of carbon neutrality. Despite ever-increasing research progress at low current densities (<100 mA cm−2) in laboratory, the water electrolysis still faces several challenges under industrially-relevant current densities (≥200 mA cm−2), such as corrosion, catalyst activity and stability issues. Thus, pursuing and designing cost-effective electrocatalysts with superior activity and stability under large current density is crucial for large-scale water splitting. This review first summarizes the fundamentals of water electrolysis both in alkaline freshwater and seawater and approaches for evaluating catalytic activity. Then, it concentrates on the innovative strategies for rational design of non-noble electrocatalysts toward alkaline water splitting and direct seawater splitting. Finally, the challenges and opportunities are highlighted for the development of catalysts toward large-current-density alkaline freshwater/seawater electrolysis.

Abstract:Hydrogen energy, a new type of clean and efficient energy, has assumed precedence in decarbonizing and building a sustainable carbon-neutral economy. Recently, hydrogen production from water splitting has seen considerable advancements owing to its advantages such as zero carbon emissions, safety, and high product purity. To overcome the large energy barrier and high cost of water splitting, numerous efficient electrocatalysts have been designed and reported. However, various difficulties in promoting the industrialization of electrocatalytic water splitting remain. Further, as high-performance electrocatalysts that satisfy industrial requirements are urgently needed, a better understanding of water-splitting systems is required. In this paper, the latest progress in water electrolysis is reviewed, and experimental evidence from in situ/operando spectroscopic surveys and computational analyses is summarized to present a mechanistic understanding of hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions. Furthermore, some promising strategies, including alloying, morphological engineering, interface construction, defect engineering, and strain engineering for designing and synthesizing electrocatalysts are highlighted. We believe that this review will provide a knowledge-guided design in fundamental science and further inspire technical engineering developments for constructing efficient electrocatalysts for water splitting.

Abstract:Transition metal materials have received widespread attention in the field of water decomposition due to their abundant production, good performance, and good stability. We have summarized the reaction principles of electrocatalytic hydrolysis in HER and OER processes. Introduced the research and development of some catalysts. In the end, we provided possible ideas and discussions for future research and development. Hydrogen has enormous commercial potential as a secondary energy source because of its high calorific value, clean combustion byproducts, and multiple production methods. Electrocatalytic water splitting is a viable alternative to the conventional methane steam reforming technique, as it operates under mild conditions, produces high‐quality hydrogen, and has a sustainable production process that requires less energy. Electrocatalysts composed of precious metals like Pt, Au, Ru, and Ag are commonly used in the investigation of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Nevertheless, their limited availability and expensive cost restrict practical use. In contrast, electrocatalysts that do not contain precious metals are readily available, cost‐effective, environmentally friendly, and possess electrocatalytic performance equal to that of noble metals. However, considerable research effort must be devoted to create cost‐effective and high‐performing catalysts. This article provides a comprehensive examination of the reaction mechanism involved in electrocatalytic water splitting in both acidic and basic environments. Additionally, recent breakthroughs in catalysts for both the hydrogen evolution and oxygen evolution reactions are also discussed. The structure‐activity relationship of the catalyst was deep‐going discussed, together with the prospects of current obstacles and potential for electrocatalytic water splitting, aiming at provide valuable perspectives for the advancement of economical and efficient electrocatalysts on an industrial scale.

Abstract:Hydrogen (H 2 ) is an important clean energy carrier due to the merits of high combustion value and zero-carbon emission. Water electrolysis has been regarded as a promising technology for achieving green and sustainable production of H 2 . However, most of the electrocatalysts for water splitting can only work at low current density with poor long-term durability, and it is difficult to meet the extensive requirements of industrial-scale applications. In this article, challenges including the charge transfer, mass diffusion, and catalyst stability during high-current–density water electrolysis are discussed. With the aim of addressing these issues, various electrocatalyst design strategies including morphology engineering, electronic structure modulation, and surface/interface engineering are summarized in detail. For the purpose of promoting practical applications, recent achievements of practical anion exchange membrane water electrolysis (AEMWE) and proton exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE) technologies are discussed. Finally, outlooks toward future investigations on high-current–density water electrolysis are presented. It is believed that this review will guide the rational design of catalysts with both high activity and high stability for high-current–density water electrolysis, and promote the development of industrial-scale green H 2 production.

Abstract:The development of cost effective and high‐performance electrocatalyst is challenging but essential for realizing industrial hydrogen production by electolyzer. Electrocatalysts for water splitting must have active catalytic performance as well as high stability in strong alkaline or acidic media to be used in commercial elecrolyzer. Transition metal based electrocatalysts are considered as highly promising candidates due to their excellent oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance and stability with low materials cost. Recently, binder free self–supported electrocatalysts based on transition metals have emerged as state‐of‐the‐art catalytic electrodes due to their high activity and robustness. These properties are attributed to lack of catalyst powder aggregation and a strong synergetic effect between the electrode surface and catalyst. In this mini review, recent development in self‐supported electrocatalysts for OER, HER and also bifunctional OER & HER are reviewed in terms of superior activity and robust stability. Material design strategies, structural and compositional properties, and catalytic performance of recently reported self‐supported electrcatalysts are summarized. Finally, overview of recent studies, challenges and prospects related to self‐supported electrocatalyts are discussed.

Abstract:Hydrogen as a clean energy resource is considered as one of the most promising alternatives to alleviate energy crisis and environmental pollution, which induces the urgent requirement for electrochemical water splitting that contains the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Compared with alkaline or acidic electrolytes, the water splitting in neutral media is more daunting and less explored, which is mainly attributed to the additional challenge in improving the sluggish kinetics of water dissociation in neutral pH. However, if the neutral water splitting system could be realized, it would bring about the opportunity to direct splitting of less corrosive saline water that is the most abundant resource, which allows a massive and sustainable hydrogen fuel production. Here we review recent research in the development of both HER and OER electrocatalysts that are operated in neutral conditions from the perspective of the reaction mechanisms, rate-determining steps, and component-structure-activity correlations. Single-atom catalysts as an emerging field are also highlighted for their high atom utilization efficiency and high activity. In view of large-current-density operating conditions, three-dimensional freestanding electrodes where catalysts grow directly on the conductive substrates become the main tendency. In addition, superhydrophilic and superaerophobic electrode surfaces are summarized with regard to rapid ion diffusions and gas bubbles release, especially under large current densities. Finally, we address the challenges associated with neutral water electrolysis and future pathways in the hope of guiding the design of the electrocatalysts and electrode materials to make large-scale hydrogen production easier and more efficient.

Abstract:Herein, recent efforts focused on the self‐supported transition metal‐based electrocatalysts with large current density and long‐term stability for alkaline industrial hydrogen evolution reaction are highlighted. Additionally, the relevant fundamentals of water electrolysis and alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) mechanism, the immediate demands and crucial factors for designing industrial HER electrocatalysts, and the future challenges and perspectives are discussed. Hydrogen (H2) energy is presumed to be the most promising alternative to replacing traditional fossil fuels to achieve the global mission of carbon neutrality. Electrocatalytic water splitting driven by green electricity has been regarded as an ideal method for large‐scale green hydrogen production with a minimal CO2 footprint. However, most of the reported electrocatalysts still suffer from large overpotentials and severe activity degradation at high current density (>1000 mA cm−2). Therefore, a comprehensive review to summarize the representative alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysts with large current densities is essential to guide the fabrication of promising industrial electrocatalysts. In this review, starting from the fundamental of water electrolysis, the design principles to acquire alkaline electrocatalysts with large current density and high stability are elaborated. The critical factors for achieving high‐performance electrocatalysts to meet industrial H2 production are proposed. Additionally, the key processes for preparing self‐supported electrodes are clarified. Afterward, the recently advanced self‐supported transition metal‐based electrocatalysts with high current density for alkaline HER are systematically summarized. Finally, personal perspective on future opportunities and challenges is highlighted. Abstract:Electrochemical water splitting is a critical energy conversion process for producing clean and sustainable hydrogen; this process relies on low-cost, highly active, and durable oxygen evolution reaction/hydrogen evolution reaction electrocatalysts. Metal cations (including transition metal and noble metal cations), particularly high-valence metal cations that show high catalytic activity and can serve as the main active sites in electrochemical processes, have received special attention for developing advanced electrocatalysts. In this review, heterogenous electrocatalyst design strategies based on high-valence metal sites are presented, and associated materials designed for water splitting are summarized. In the discussion, emphasis is given to high-valence metal sites combined with the modulation of the phase/electronic/defect structure and strategies of performance improvement. Specifically, the importance of using advanced in situ and operando techniques to track the real high-valence metal-based active sites during the electrochemical process is highlighted. Remaining challenges and future research directions are also proposed. It is expected that this comprehensive discussion of electrocatalysts containing high-valence metal sites can be instructive to further explore advanced electrocatalysts for water splitting and other energy-related reactions.
Hydrogen production from water electrolysis: role of catalysts

Abstract:As a promising substitute for fossil fuels, hydrogen has emerged as a clean and renewable energy. A key challenge is the efficient production of hydrogen to meet the commercial-scale demand of hydrogen. Water splitting electrolysis is a promising pathway to achieve the efficient hydrogen production in terms of energy conversion and storage in which catalysis or electrocatalysis plays a critical role. The development of active, stable, and low-cost catalysts or electrocatalysts is an essential prerequisite for achieving the desired electrocatalytic hydrogen production from water splitting for practical use, which constitutes the central focus of this review. It will start with an introduction of the water splitting performance evaluation of various electrocatalysts in terms of activity, stability, and efficiency. This will be followed by outlining current knowledge on the two half-cell reactions, hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER), in terms of reaction mechanisms in alkaline and acidic media. Recent advances in the design and preparation of nanostructured noble-metal and non-noble metal-based electrocatalysts will be discussed. New strategies and insights in exploring the synergistic structure, morphology, composition, and active sites of the nanostructured electrocatalysts for increasing the electrocatalytic activity and stability in HER and OER will be highlighted. Finally, future challenges and perspectives in the design of active and robust electrocatalysts for HER and OER towards efficient production of hydrogen from water splitting electrolysis will also be outlined.

Abstract:Electrochemical water splitting is a promising technology for sustainable conversion, storage, and transport of hydrogen energy. Searching for earth-abundant hydrogen/oxygen evolution reaction (HER/OER) electrocatalysts with high activity and durability to replace noble-metal-based catalysts plays paramount importance in the scalable application of water electrolysis. A freestanding electrode architecture is highly attractive as compared to the conventional coated powdery form because of enhanced kinetics and stability. Herein, recent progress in developing transition-metal-based HER/OER electrocatalytic materials is reviewed with selected examples of chalcogenides, phosphides, carbides, nitrides, alloys, phosphates, oxides, hydroxides, and oxyhydroxides. Focusing on self-supported electrodes, the latest advances in their structural design, controllable synthesis, mechanistic understanding, and strategies for performance enhancement are presented. Remaining challenges and future perspectives for the further development of self-supported electrocatalysts are also discussed.

Abstract:The depletion of fossil fuels and rapidly increasing environmental concerns have urgently called for the utilization of clean and sustainable sources for future energy supplies. Hydrogen (H2) is recognized as a prioritized green resource with little environmental impact to replace traditional fossil fuels. Electrochemical water splitting has become an important method for large-scale green production of hydrogen. The hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is the cathodic half-reaction of water splitting that can be promoted to produce pure H2 in large quantities by active electrocatalysts. However, the unsatisfactory performance of HER electrocatalysts cannot follow the extensive requirements of industrial-scale applications, including working efficiently and stably over long periods of time at high current densities (⩾1000 mA cm-2). In this review, we study the crucial issues when electrocatalysts work at high current densities and summarize several categories of strategies for the design of high-performance HER electrocatalysts. We also discuss the future challenges and opportunities for the development of HER catalysts.
