Abstract:Hollow mesoporous silica spheres with radially aligned mesochannels were fabricated successfully by combining hard and soft templating methods. The microstructure, textural properties and the structure regulation approach of the hollow spheres were investigated. The results show that the hollow spheres are perfectly spherical, monodisperse, and present ordered mesochannels with pore size of ~2.20nm, high specific surface area and high pore volume. The textural properties of the hollow mesoporous silica spheres can be tuned by adjusting the alkali-treatment process of the carbon spheres and the concentration of the inorganic source.

Abstract:We demonstrate a self-transformation approach for the synthesis of ordered mesoporous silica hollow spheres with radially oriented mesochannels. The method is simple and facile, in which mesostructured silica spheres synthesized in a Stöber solution can spontaneously transform to hollow structure when they are incubated with water. The formation of the hollow structure does not require any sacrificial templates, emulsion droplets, or surface protective agents. The obtained mesoporous silica hollow spheres possess controllable diameter, tunable shell thickness, high specific surface area, and uniform mesopore. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observations show that the formation of the hollow spheres undergoes a selective etching process in the inner section. 29Si NMR spectra and detailed reactions demonstrate that the solid-to-hollow transformation of the Stöber silica spheres in water is attributed to the difference in the degree of condensation of silica between their outer layer and inner section. Cytotoxicity and histological assays confirm that the obtained mesoporous silica hollow spheres possess good biocompatibility. Besides, the capability of the hollow spheres as contrast agents for untrasound imaging is conducted in vitro. Moreover, yolk–shell microspheres with a Fe3O4@nSiO2 core and a mesoporous silica shell are successfully prepared based on the facile self-transformation strategy, which provides a general method to create various yolk–shell structured multifunctional composites for different applications.

Abstract:In this study, a facile one-step method was proposed to prepare pore-expanded hollow-structured mesoporous silica spheres. The method hollowed silica spheres, at the same time, expanded mesopores sizes. So this method not only achieved preparation of hollow mesoporous silica spheres by self-templating strategy but also expanded mesochannels. The influences of different pore-expanding agents and the reaction time on the degree of hollowing and pore-expanding were also investigated. The obtained samples possess hollow structure, well-defined spherical morphology, uniform particle size, large mesoporous volume, ordered, and large mesochannels. In addition, the hollow cavity size and the mesoporous size could be controlled via choosing the appropriate pore-expanding agent and reaction time.

Abstract:The synthesis of hollow silica spheres with mesopore wall structures via CO2-in-water emulsion templating in the presence of non-ionic PEO-PPO-PEO block copolymer surfactants as mesostructure-directing templates has been investigated under various conditions. The successful synthesis of hollow spheres strongly depends on the pressure and density of CO2. The mesoporosity (pore size) and morphology of the silica hollow spheres can be controlled by varying the operating CO2 pressure. Other types of surfactants, such as long chain alkylammonium ions, may also be used to template the porosity of the shells.

Abstract:Herein, using an acid-hydrolyzed tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS)/bis(triethoxysilyl)ethane (BTEE) mixture as a precursor for the traditional surfactant-assembly synthesis of mesostructured silica spheres instead of directly purchased commercial precursors, molecularly ethane-bridged hollow mesoporous silica spheres (MEB-HMSs) with radial mesochannels and an enlarged pore size were successfully synthesized without any additional core templates. The composition, pore size, particle size, shell thickness, and rate could be controllably tailored by only changing the amount of reagents used in the reaction. The cytotoxicity assay confirmed that MEB-HMSs have good biocompatibility, together with good Dox-loading capacity.

Abstract:Hollow mesoporous structures have great potential in catalysis, energy storage and conversion, biomedicine, etc., due to their abundant inner void space and porous permeable shells. However, there is still a lack of efficient, simple and green synthesis methods. Herein, sodium citrate nanoparticles with excellent colloidal stability were used as templates for the direct growth of mesoporous silica shells through the interfacial co-assembly of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) micelles and hydrolyzed oligomer of tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS). The hollow mesoporous structures were obtained simply after removal of the CTAB micelles and colloidal sodium citrate nanoparticles by ethanol and water washing. Further studies have shown that electrostatic interactions between negatively charged colloidal sodium citrate nanoparticles and CTAB micelles were key for the polymerization assembly of silicon oxide oligomer on the nanoparticle surface. More importantly, the morphology and shell thickness of hollow mesoporous structures could be accurately adjusted through the control of reaction time. Moreover, the hollow meso. porous structures could improve the mass transfer significantly, which can act as an ideal support for metal catalysts. As a proof of concept, the Au nanoparticles loaded hollow mesoporous silica nanospheres showed excellent catalytic activity for reduction of 4-nitrophenol. This work provided a new insight into the green and simple synthesis of hollow mesoporous materials.

Abstract:The synthesis of well-defined and complex hollow structures via a simple method is still a major challenge. In this work, a facile and controllable multi-interface transformation approach for preparation of monodisperse multi-shelled periodic mesoporous organosilica (PMO) hollow spheres has been established by a one-step hydrothermal treatment of successively grown organosilica particles. The multi-shelled PMO hollow spheres have inorganicorganic hybrid frameworks, controllable number (1-4) of shells, high surface area (similar to 805 m(2)/g), accessible ordered mesochannels (similar to 3.2 nm), large pore volume (1.0 cm(3)/g), and uniform and tunable diameter (300-550 nm), chamber size (4-54 nm), and shell thickness (10-30 nm). In addition, various organic groups (alkyl, aromatic, and heteroelement fragments) are successfully incorporated into the multi-shelled PMO hollow spheres by successively adding different bridged organosilica precursors. Notably, the distribution of different kinds of organic groups in the multi-shelled PMO hollow spheres can be precisely controlled, showing great potential for future applications. We propose that the formation of the multi-shelled PMO hollow structures is ascribed to the creation of multiple highly cross-linked organosilica interfaces, providing a new and interesting fundamental principle for PMO materials. Due to their unique structure and frameworks, triple-shelled ethane-bridged PMO hollow spheres were successfully loaded with an anti-cancer drug doxorubicin and perfluoropentane gas, which present excellent effects in the killing of cancer cells and ultrasound imaging. It is expected that the multi-interface transformation strategy provides a simple, controllable, versatile, and template-free method for preparation of various multifunctional PMOs for different applications.

Abstract:Here, we present a facile ultrasonic-assisted method to fabricate hollow mesoporous silica spheres. The prepared hollow mesoporous silica spheres own well-regulated size, large specific surface area, and homogeneous mesoporous. Time-dependent experimental results depict that the formation of the hollow spheres undergoes a selective etching process. The results of fire toxic tests show that the toxic gases decomposed from the combustion of epoxy resin were observably inhibited with the incorporation of hollow mesoporous silica. Abstract:Mesoporous silica materials with a variety of morphologies, such as monodisperse microspheres, gigantic hollow structures comprising a thin shell with a hole, and gigantic hollow structures consisting of an outer thin shell and an inner layer composed of many small spheres, have been readily synthesized in mixed water-ethanol solvents at room temperature using cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as the template. The obtained mesoporous silica generally shows a disordered mesostructure with typical average pore sizes ranging from 3.1 to 3.8 nm. The effects of the water-to-ethanol volume ratio (r), the volume content of tetraethyl orthosilicate TEOS (x), and the CTAB concentration in the solution on the final morphology of the mesoporous silica products have been investigated. The growth process of gigantic hollow shells of mesoporous silica through templating emulsion droplets of TEOS in mixed water-ethanol solution has been monitored directly with optical microscopy. Generally, the morphology of mesoporous silica can be regulated from microspheres through gigantic hollow structures composed of small spheres to gigantic hollow structures with a thin shell by increasing the water-to-ethanol volume ratio, increasing the TEOS volume content, or decreasing the CTAB concentration. A plausible mechanism for the morphological regulation of mesoporous silica by adjusting various experimental parameters has been put forward by considering the existing state of the unhydrolyzed and partially hydrolyzed TEOS in the synthesis system.

Abstract:Rational design of hollow mesoporous silicas with distinctive morphology has attracted considerable interest for their promising applications of different functions. Herein, we reported hollow mesoporous silica ellipsoids with quasiperiodic cocoon-shape, and fully investigated the evolution of external morphology and interior structure with solution concentrations. However, synthetic theories used so far hardly provide reasonable explanation. Therefore, a morphogenetic mechanism upon interfacial destabilization dynamics is proposed based on the experimental results, in which unstable interfaces of emulsions influenced by harmonic perturbations are employed as secondary templates for the nonequilibrium deposition/diffusion of rod-like micelles, explaining well the controllability of the morphology.

Abstract:Abstract Mesoporous silica can be synthesized by either the alkaline route or the acidic route, both using surfactants as templates. Morphological transformations of mesoporous silica can produce various hierarchical orders. Different morphologies are produced under different synthetic conditions. In the alkaline route, the surfactant/silicate liquid crystal system undergoes phase transformation to form vesicles and further transforms to the hexagonal phase. The results are tubule-within-tubule and hollow pillar-within-sphere structures depending on cosurfactant/surfactant composition. Using nitric acid in the acidic route, one can obtain hierarchical ropes or gyroids depending on stirring conditions. Ammonia hydrothermal treatment can induce further morphological transformation to nanotubes of mesoporous silica.

Abstract:Hollow spheres with mesoporous silica nanoparticles shell were synthesized with the use of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and polystyrene (PS) hollow spheres as dual templates. The key to this study is that the uneven surface of the template provides nucleation sites for mesoporous nanoparticles, resulting in the formation of hollow spheres with mesoporous silica nanoparticles shell. The final products with hierarchical mesopores can be obtained through a simple one-step approach.

Abstract:A facile nonpolar solvent-assisted Stober method has been developed to synthesize ordered mesoporous silica materials with tunable pore size and diverse morphologies and mesostructures by using cetyltrimethylammonium bromide as the template and tetraethyl orthosilicate as silica precursor in a simple aqueous-phase synthesis system. By simply changing the amount of n-hexane and ammonia-water in the system, ordered mesoporous silica with pore sizes of 2.7-10.5 nm, various morphologies (nanocubes, truncated nanocubes, core-shell microspheres, and twisted nanorods), a high surface area up to 888 m(2)/g, and a large pore volume of 1.55 cm(3)/g are synthesized. Owing to their highly hydrophilic surface, large and accessible pores, and high surface area, the mesoporous silica materials exhibit an excellent performance in adsorption of dye molecules of large dimension (1.6 nm) with a maximum adsorption capacity of 106 mg/g in 10 min at 200 mg/L initial Rhodamine B concentration.

Abstract:High-yield synthesis of hollow silica spheres with controllable sizes and wall thicknesses can be realized by a modified Stober method under the control of poly(acrylic acid) (PAA). This synthetic route is involved in the formation of spherical colloid aggregates in ethanol solution, hydrolysis of TEOS under control of ammonia, and the following removal of polyelectrolyte by washing. Hollow silica spheres with controllable diameters between 25 and 400 nm and wall thicknesses of several tens of nanometers can be controlled. This method can be scaled up for large-scale synthesis of hollow silica spheres and the synthesis of other inorganic materials with core-shell or hollow structures, as well as encapsulation of other materials.

Abstract:Hollow nanospheres with a particle size of less than 25 nm have been successfully fabricated using all ethylene-, phenylene-, and 1,4-diethylphenylene-bridging silane precursor with F127 as a soft template under an acidic medium. As the size and flexibility of the bridging organic group increases, it is more and more difficult for the formation of hollow nanospheres. The organic additive, 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene, could finely tune the particle size of the nanosphere from 12 to 25 nm. It was found that silane precursors with hydrophobicity and slow hydrolysis rate favor the formation of hollow nanospheres and hydrophilic silane precursors such as tetra methoxysilane induce the formation of mesostructured bulk materials. Under the current synthesis conditions, carefully tuning the interaction between templates and silica species, organosilica hollow nanospheres with controlled composition call be successfully obtained.

Abstract:We report a facile approach that can simultaneously control the morphology and surface chemistry of mesoporous materials from triblock copolymers. By doping phosphotungstic acid (PW), the self-assembled structures of polystyrene–poly(ethylene oxide)–polylactide (PS–PEO–PLA, SEL) triblock copolymer can be tuned. Besides core–shell cylinders and lamellae, disordered bicontinuous structures can be achieved in SEL/PW composites. After etching with NaOH, PLA domains and PW additive are removed simultaneously, giving mesoporous PS monoliths with controlled morphologies and PEO-coated pores. Also, we demonstrated that the prepared porous PS monoliths can be used as templates to fabricate inorganic nanostructures. This work provides new insight into the fabrication of functional mesoporous materials.

Abstract:Owing to the weak self-assembly ability of precursor components and the unadjustable limitation of micelle structures during assembly process, the synthesis of mesoporous colloidal nanospheres with sophisticated multimodal pore system remains a great challenge. Herein, we report a programmable shear-induced dynamic assembly approach to synthesize radially gradient-structured mesoporous carbon nanospheres with tunable core-shell architectures. Detailed mechanism studies reveal that the micelle structures in our system can be well adjusted by changing the shear force. More importantly, the synthetic process can be programmatically proceeded by setting up an on-demand stirring model, resulting in the intelligent assembly of multimodal mesostructures. The resultant mesoporous carbon nanospheres show small particle size, high surface area, abundant nitrogen species, and radially oriented open-porous structure and, as a result, deliver high capability and ultra-long cyclic life for sodium-ion storage. This facile programmable assembly approach would offer new opportunities in exploring sophisticated multimodal mesostructures for innovative applications.
