Abstract:Nowadays three-dimensional (3D) printing has been widely used for producing geometrically complex 3D structures from a broad range of materials such as ceramics, metals, polymers, semiconductors, etc. Although it has been demonstrated that a fabrication resolution as high as ~100 nm can be achieved in 3D printing based on two photon polymerization (TPP), the end product size of TPP is typically on millimeter scale limited by the short working distance of high-numerical-aperture focal lens. Here we present a method based on simultaneous spatiotemporal focusing (SSTF) of the femtosecond laser pulses that enables to fabricate centimeter-scale 3D structures of fine features with TPP. We also demonstrate an isotropic spatial resolution which can be continuously tuned in the range of ~10 um and ~40 um by only varying the power of femtosecond laser, making this technique extremely flexible and easy to implement. We fabricate several Chinese guardian lions of a maximum height of 0.6 cm and a Terra Cotta Warrior of a height of 1.3 cm using this method.

Abstract:We present a method based on simultaneous spatiotemporal focusing (SSTF) of the femtosecond laser pulses that enables to fabricate 3D structures on the centimeter scale. The isotropic spatial resolutions of fabrication have been achieved in different materials, making this approach easy to implement. For example, applying simultaneous spatiotemporal focusing (SSTF) of femtosecond laser pulses in two-photon polymerization (TPP) (i.e., termed as SSTF-TPP hereafter) uniquely allows for producing centimeter-scale 3D structures at a spatial resolution as high as ~10 μm. The fabrication resolution can be tuned simply by varying the power of femtosecond laser. The capacity of this SSTF-TPP method is confirmed by fabricating complex 3D structures such as Chinese guardian lions and a Terra Cotta Warrior. In addition, based on the SSTF scheme, we demonstrate 3D microprocessing in glass with a nearly invariant spatial resolution for a large range of penetration depth without any aberration correction. The SSTF technique can be useful for a broad range of superfine 3D printing applications such as micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS), infrared or Terahertz photonics, microfluidics, and 3D bio-printing.

Abstract:Two-photon polymerization （TPP） based on femtosecond laser has been a research hotspot in 3D micro/nano writing technology.With the increasing demand for processing complex and large-scale miniaturized 3D devices in the fields of life science,material engineering,micro and nano optics,and etc.,the issue of low processing efficiency of TPP is becoming increasingly serious.During the long fabrication period,many disturbances can be introduced in the processing,causing the quality deterioration of the structure and seriously hindering the further popularization and application of these crucial 3D devices.This paper respectively compares the four approaches of single-beam writing,parallel multi-beam writing,pattern projection,and 3D projection exposure based on the TPP lithography efficiency.Moreover,the researches on the optical design of system,the writing accuracy,the fabrication throughput,the writing strategy,and etc.of each approach are also described.And the advantages and disadvantages of these four methods are summerized simultaneously.Finally,we also made a brief prospect to the developing trend of TPL efficiency improvement in the future.

Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) laser nanoprinting with high resolution and low cost is highly desirable for fabricating arbitrary 3D structures with fine feature size. In this work, we use a 405-nm integrated fiber-coupled continuous wave (cw) laser diode to establish an easy-to-build 3D nanoprinting system based on two-step absorption. Two-dimensional (2D) gratings with a sub-150-nm period and 3D woodpile nanostructures with a lateral period of 350 nm have been printed at a low speed. At a faster scan velocity of 1000 µm/s, 2D gratings with sub-200-nm resolution and sub-50-nm linewidth can still be fabricated with laser power less than 1 mW. The two-step absorption of the used benzil initiator enables us to use a second cw laser with 532-nm wavelength to enhance the polymerization with sub-100-nm feature size when starting with insufficient 405-nm laser power, which possess the potential to find applications in high-speed high-resolution parallel-writing and in situ manipulation.
High-Resolution Femtosecond Laser 3d Micromachining Using Low-Na Focusing Systems

Abstract:Low-NA focusing systems can offer longer working distances than the high-NA ones, thereby enabling fabrication of 3D structures of great heights/thicknesses. However, degradation of the longitudinal resolution occurs at low NAs as a consequence of diffraction of the light waves. Here, we report on high-resolution laser printing of three dimensional (3D) structures of heights up to a few centimeters with a sub-10 mu m longitudinal resolution by incorporating a simultaneous spatiotemporal focusing (SSTF) scheme into the femtosecond laser direct writing. Remarkably, the SSTF can ensure generation of symmetric focal spots (i.e., spherical focal spots) of comparable sizes along both the horizontal and vertical directions. The resolutions are tunable in real time by dynamically varying the power of the writing laser beam. The ability to simultaneous achieving the large heights and high longitudinal resolutions in femtosecond laser 3D micromachining is of great use for applications ranging from microfluidics to infrared and THz photonics.

Abstract:Throughput and resolution are both of critical importance for modern manufacturing, however, they are usually contradictionary to each other. Here, the high-throughput multi-resolution three dimensional (3D) printing is demonstrated by incorporating a simultaneous spatiotemporal focusing (SSTF) scheme in two-photon polymerization. Remarkably, the SSTF can ensure generation of a spherical focal spot of which the size depends linearly on the laser power. Thus, the resolution can be continuously adjusted from sub-10 to similar to 40 mu m by only increasing the laser power. A multi-resolution 3D structure is fabricated using this technique, for which the regions of coarse and fine feature sizes are produced at high and low resolutions, respectively.

Abstract:To improve the processing efficiency and extend the tuning range of 3D isotropic fabrication, we apply the simultaneous spatiotemporal focusing（SSTF） technique to a high-repetition-rate femtosecond（fs） fiber laser system. In the SSTF scheme, we propose a pulse compensation scheme for the fiber laser with a narrow spectral bandwidth by building an extra-cavity pulse stretcher. We further demonstrate truly 3D isotropic microfabrication in photosensitive glass with a tunable resolution ranging from 8 μm to 22 μm using the SSTF of fs laser pulses. Moreover, we systematically investigate the influences of pulse energy, writing speed, processing depth, and spherical aberration on the fabrication resolution. As a proof-of-concept demonstration, the SSTF scheme was further employed for the fs laser-assisted etching of complicated glass microfluidic structures with 3D uniform sizes. The developed technique can be extended to many applications such as advanced photonics, 3D biomimetic printing, micro-electromechanical systems, and lab-on-a-chips.

Abstract:Two-photon polymerization (TPP) is the most precise 3-D printing process that has been used to create many complex structures for advanced photonic and nanoscale applications. However, to date the technology still remains a laboratory tool due to its high operation cost and limited fabrication rate, i.e., serial laser scanning process. Here we present a revolutionary laser nanofabrication process based on TPP and an ultrafast random-access digital micromirror device (DMD) scanner. By exploiting binary holography, the DMD scanner can simultaneously generate and individually control one to tens of laser foci for parallel nanofabrication at 22.7 kHz. Complex 3-D trusses and woodpile structures have been fabricated via single or multi-focus processes, showing a resolution of ~500 nm. The nanofabrication system may be used for largescale nano-prototyping or creation of complex structures, e.g., overhanging structures, that cannot be easily fabricated via conventional raster-scanning-based systems, bringing significant impact to the world of nanomanufacturing.

Abstract:This article reports a novel laser-induced micro-fabrication method and its monitoring system for three-dimensional (3D) microstructures. The mechanism of the method is that a small zone of thermoplastic material melted by laser heating grows in liquid surrounding environment, solidifying into a convex microstructure, such as micro-dot or micro-pillar. A laser diode (808 nm) with maximum power output of 130 mW is used as power source, and a kind of paraffin mixed with stearic acid and paint serves as the thermoplastic material for 3D microstructure formation experiments. A light microscope system consisting of a charge-coupled device (CCD) and a computer is utilized to realize real-time observation of the micro-fabricating process. The distribution of local temperature rise on material surface created by laser irradiation is simulated. The effects of liquid environment on microstructure formation have been theoretically analyzed and experimentally studied. Experiments are further carried out to investigate the relationship between laser spot and fabricated microstructures. The results indicate that the widths of microdots or micro-pillars are mostly determined by the size of focal spot, and their heights increase with the enlargement of laser power density. With this method, a micro-dot array of Chinese characters meaning "China" has been successfully fabricated through computer programming. This method has the advantages of implementing direct, mask-less, real-time and inexpensive 3D microstructure fabrication. Abstract:Abstract There is demand for scaling up 3D printing throughput, especially for the multi-photon 3D printing process that provides sub-micrometer structuring capabilities required in diverse fields. In this work, high-speed projection multi-photon printing is combined with spatiotemporal focusing for fabrication of 3D structures in a rapid, layer-by-layer, and continuous manner. Spatiotemporal focusing confines printing to thin layers, thereby achieving print thicknesses on the micron and sub-micron scale. Through projection of dynamically varying patterns with no pause between patterns, a continuous fabrication process is established. A numerical model for computing spatiotemporal focusing and imaging is also presented which is verified by optical imaging and printing results. Complex 3D structures with smooth features are fabricated, with millimeter scale printing realized at a rate above 10 −3 mm 3 s −1 . This method is further scalable, indicating its potential to make fabrications of 3D structures with micro/nanoscale features in a practical time scale a reality.

Abstract:With the rapid progress of ultra short laser technology, two photon photopolymerization(TTP) has been introduced into the domain of microfabrication. Its characterization and process are described in this paper as well as its experimental system. Through the relevant experiments, we optimized the spatial resolution of this method. Under the fine focusing, we obtain the minimum line width of 0.65 mu m, which has broken the diffraction limit. Finally, we have presented some microstructures fabricated by this technique, which illustrate its practicability in fabricating micro and nanostructures efficiently.
Additive Manufacturing of Millimeter-Scale Micron-Accuracy 3D Structures

Abstract:In this work, we demonstrate a developed 3D printing based on two-photon polymerization for achieving millimeter-scale, micron-accuracy 3D structures (MM-3DS), which combines the femtosecond laser of 800 nm and low magnification objective lens of 10×. The commercial photoresist SU-8 is used in 3D printing system for improving mechanical strength and chemical stability of MM-3DS. The 3D microstructures are preprogrammed and optimized by considering the scanning mode and experiment parameters. During 3D printing process, micron features are written within the interior of SU-8 film via localized polymerization driven by nonlinear two-photon absorption process. By the 3D movement in ~1 mm scale of the focused beam, a customized MM-3DS can be produced. We have fabricated a customized MM-3DS with a size of 1.6 mm and an accuracy of 10 μm. The influence of volume for the printing structures Vs on the printing time T exhibits a linear behavior, indicating that the printing speed is 0.248 mm3/h under the current conditions. This technology offers a flexible and low-cost method of generating highly customizable, precisely controlled MM-3DS, which is promising for the manufacture of complex functional structures and devices for the microfluidics, microelectronics, photonics and so on.

Abstract:The photo-polymerization induced by Two-Photon Absorption (TPA) is tightly confined in the focus because the efficiency of TPA is proportional to the square of intensity. Three-dimensional (3D) micro-fabrication can be achieved by controlling the movement of the focus. Based on this theory, a system for 3D-micro-fabrication with femtosecond laser is proposed. The system consists of a laser system, a microscope system, a real-time detection system and a 3D-movement system, etc. The precision of micro-machining reaches a level down to 700nm linewidth. The line width was inversely proportional to the fabrication speed, but proportional to laser power and NA. The experiment results were simulated, beam waist of 0.413μm and TPA cross section of 2×10-54cm4s was obtained. While we tried to optimize parameters, we also did some research about its applications. With TPA photo-polymerization by means of our experimental system, 3D photonic crystal of wood-pile structure twelve layers and photonic crystal fiber are manufactured. These results proved that the micro-fabrication system of TPA can not only obtain the resolution down to sub-micron level, but also realize real 3D micro-fabrication.

Rapid two-photon polymerization of arbitrary 3D microstructure with femtosecond laser 3D focal field engineering

Abstract:Femtosecond laser direct writing via two-photon polymerization (TPP), which utilizes high intensity laser induced two-photon absorption to initiate polymerization, is a promising approach for 3D microstructure fabrication especially micro-optical devices. The traditional point-by-point direct writing TPP has high spatial resolution but usually timeconsuming[1], thus it is hard to fabricate large structures or arrays. Recently, several solutions have been proposed to facilitate the polymerization, for instance, the multi-focus generation for parallel processing but the interference between foci limits their density[2], the multi-beam interference for specific periodic structures[3], and the focal field engineering[4,5]. In this work, we fabricate arbitrary 3D structures with the focal field engineering (FFE) by inversely retrieving the incident beam profile from the target focal field to speed up the polymerization of the microstructures. Moreover, we anneal the structure as post heat treatment to improve its smoothness of the surface.

Abstract:Two-photon absorption (TPA) is confined at the focus under tight-focusing conditions, which provides a novel concept for micro-fabrication using two-photon photo-polymerization in resin. The development of three-dimensional micro-fabrication by femtosecond laser was introduced at first, then the merits of femtosecond two-photon photo-polymerization was expatiated. Femtosecond laser direct scanning three-dimensional (3D) micro-fabrication system was set up and corresponding controlling software was developed. We demonstrated a fabrication of three-dimensional microstructures using photo-polymerization of resin by two-photon absorption. The precision of micro-machining and the spatial resolution reached 1um because of TPA. The dependence of fabricated line width to the micro-fabrication speed was investigated. Benzene ring, CHINA and layer-by-layer of log structures were fabricated in this 3D- micro-fabrication system as examples.

Abstract:An apparatus for 3D laser printing by the two-photon polymerization technique using a scheme for spatiotemporal focusing of femtosecond laser radiation is described. The system, which is based on available components) allows the formation of 3D centimeter-size structures with the micron resolution in all directions; this is its main advantage over other systems, including commercial ones. When creating the apparatus, a minimum number of optical and optomechanical components were used, thus significantly increasing the accessibility of such apparatuses in various laboratories. This apparatus can be used to manufacture 3D structures for various purposes, including scaffold structures for tissue-engineering tasks.

Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) printing is widely used in many fields such as micro-optics, microbiology, and microfluidics. However, using existing technologies is a challenge to efficiently fabricate high-quality 3D structures with cross-scale and cross-precision. In this paper, we propose a low-cost hybrid processing technology that combines two-photon polymerization (TPP) and DMD micro stereolithography (DMDMSL) (TPP-DMDMSL). This low-cost hybrid processing technology is a two-part alignment achieved by combining marker positioning and image processing, and then by coordinating the transformation of processing data. Using the same mark as a bridge, the two independent technologies are linked to realize hybrid processing. The high synergetic combination of the two technologies is realized by using the mask as the benchmark and combining it with the flexible real-time transformation of processing data. The horizontal and vertical alignment accuracy is 2 μm and 3 μm, respectively. TPP-DMDMSL unites the high precision of TPP with the high efficiency of DMDMSL. Taking the aspheric lens as an example (radius = 163 μm, height = 33 μm), TPP-DMDMSL reduces the time from 4 h to 1 h. The maximum surface error is 0.22 μm, which does not affect the image quality according to the Rayleigh criterion. TPP-DMDMSL manufactures different types of structures. These results prove that TPP-DMDMSL can print multiple types of 3D structures across scales and precision, which is challenging or time-consuming with existing technologies. TPP-DMDMSL will likely be extended to more micro and nano fields based on the original general technology. TPP-DMDMSL provides strong basic techniques and ideas for integrated hybrid processing systems in the future.
