Abstract:We demonstrate single-shot temporal-based interferometric phase measurements for bursts of 35 pulses of 1-ns duration in an Yb-doped fiber amplifier chain seeded by a 1063-nm single-frequency diode laser and operating in a highly nonlinear and saturated regime. We determined a maximum intra-pulse phase distortion (B-integral) of 21.2 rad by mixing the burst with a reference. The difference in the B-integral between the first and last pulse in the burst was large, 12.8 rad, but can be compensated for. Moreover, burst-to-burst amplitude fluctuations (standard deviation, std) were below 6%, where phase fluctuations were similar to 0.6 rad (std) or less. Even if these fluctuations cannot be compensated for, they still allow for efficient coherent combination, which opens up for transform-limited or narrow-line high-energy divided-pulse amplification with single-frequency seeding.

Abstract:A comprehensive observation of the stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) phenomena in a high-power nanosecond linearly polarized Yb-doped double-clad fiber amplifier is presented. According to the behavior of SBS, the amplification process is divided into four regions. All the temporal, spectral and power characteristics of SBS in both forward and backward directions in each region are described in detail. Cascaded SBS with up to 30 orders of Stokes waves and 10 orders of anti-Stokes waves is observed. The fiber damage caused by the giant SBS pulses is reported. And the influence of the linewidth pulse duration feedback and polarization on SBS is discussed.

Abstract:A hundred nano-joules femtosecond (fs) laser amplification system based on the polarization-maintaining Yb3+ fibers was proposed in this paper. In the proposed system, a Yb-doped mode-locked laser oscillator was used as the light source. Using the chirped pulse amplification method, a two-stage polarization-maintaining Yb-doped fiber amplifier was adopted. Experimental results show that, with compression of the output light, the output pulse energy can reach 113 nJ and the pulse duration is measured as 221 fs.

Abstract:We demonstrate a broadband fiber amplifier system emitting 10nm pulses with 33mJ pulse energy at repetition rates between 1 and 20Hz. In combination with a pulse width of 10ns, a corresponding peak output power over than 3MW was achieved. This record performance was enabled by fiber with core diameter of 200μm. Furthermore, in order to suppress amplified spontaneous emission (ASE), multi-stage pulse pump technology was applied and different pumping characteristics had been measured. Finally, 15% extraction efficiency was obtained when output energy reached 33mJ. Output capability of the amplifier was not limited by SBS and ASE but the pump peak power.

Abstract:We report the construction of a cascaded fiber amplifier where a 40-μm-core-diameter photonic crystal fiber is utilized in the main amplifier stage. Single-transverse-mode, linearly-polarized, 7.5ns pulses with 1.5mJ energy, 123kW peak power and 10nm spectral bandwidth centered at 1062nm are generated. To our knowledge, the pulse energy we obtain is the highest from 40-μm-core-diameter photonic crystal fibers, and also the highest for long pulses (>1ns) with linear polarization and single transverse mode.

Abstract:A high-energy, single-frequency fiber laser with long pulse duration of 100 ns has been experimentally investigated in an all-fiber architecture. Only 34-cm long heavily Yb-doped phosphate fiber was employed in power scaling stage to efficiently suppress the Stimulated Brillouin effect (SBS). In the experiment, 0.47 mJ single pulse energy was achieved in power scaling stage at the pump power of 16 W. The pre-shaped pulse was gradually broadened from 103 to 140 ns during the amplification without shape distortion.

Abstract:We numerically and experimentally demonstrate a Yb-doped fiber ultrashort pulse generator based on self-phase modulation and alternating spectral filtering, operating at a wavelength of 1060 nm and providing a stable ultrashort pulse train. Pulses with energy up to 2.8 nJ were generated experimentally and were limited only by available pump power.

Abstract:We reported a 26 W linearly polarized single-mode Yb-doped photonic crystal fiber amplifier, working at 80 kHz repetition rate with 4.5 ns duration, corresponding 72 kW peak power. Using a acousto-optic Q-switched Nd:YVO4 laser as the seed source, the 26 W average power of 1064 nm laser was obtained at a repetition rate of 80 kHz from a Yb-doped photonic crystal fiber amplifier, with 4.5 ns duration, polarization extinction ratio 11 dB and M 2 < 1.2.

Abstract:Hundreds of picosecond pulses amplifier based on Yb-doped tapered fiber can serve as the primary power amplifier stage for an all-fiber and polarization-maintained picosecond pulse laser system. Here, we report a high-power narrow-linewidth amplifier stage by using the Yb-doped tapered fiber. In the regime, we have demonstrated amplification of 201.4 ps pulses centered at 1031.4 nm with a spectral width of 0.54 nm to 105 W average power at a repetition rate of 29.3 MHz. The picosecond pulses had a high beam quality with a measured M2 value of 1.36 ∼ 1.51, and the optical-to-optical conversion efficiency reached 56 %. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of a high-power amplifier based on Yb-doped tapered fiber, capable of amplifying hundreds of picosecond pulses beyond the hectowatt-level average power, while maintaining high beam quality. This achievement highlights the immense potential of Yb-doped tapered fiber in the field of picosecond pulse power amplification. At last, we have refined the model for the transmission and amplification of picosecond pulses in Yb-doped tapered optical fibers, thereby enhancing simulation accuracy by 8 % and providing valuable references for the in-depth research of tapered fiber pulse amplifiers.

Abstract:A special slow motion dynamic equations are presented especially adapt to the fiber laser analyze in which a long working cycle simulation and acute state changing are both needed. It can greatly save the calculation time while keep the output result relatively accurate. Then the dynamics of nanosecond high energy low repetition rate pulsed fiber amplifier is analyzed which indicate that most energy is wasted by means of self emission between pulses and the amplified self emission (ASE) is no longer the main cause of energy depletion with proper pulsed pump. Hence, unless a relatively large input seed source is used, the light conversion efficiency of a low repetition rate pulsed laser is usually much lower than the quantum efficiency even with a pulsed pump.

Abstract:Some analysis of the dynamic characteristics of the Yb-doped fibre amplifier under pulsed pump are performed by solving a set of time-dependent rate and power transfer equations based on finite-difference method. The upper level population distribution, amplified spontaneous emission (ASE), the stored energy and the output pulse energy etc., are emphasized in this paper. The results show that, the amplification can be achieved that under continuous wave (CW) pump and the ASE can be restrained by choosing an optimum pump pulse width. In addition, decay of the stored energy is presented, the time interval between pump pulses is also determined. In the experiment the amplification results of the fibre amplifier are measured by tuning the width of pump pulse. The repetition rate can be set freely from single shot to 250Hz. And the amplification characteristics are independent of the repetition rate. The experiment shows the validity of the numerical simulation.

Abstract:Some analysis of the transient response of the Yb-doped fiber amplifier are performed by solving a set of time-dependent rate and power transfer equations based on finite-difference method. Meanwhile, the variation of time to reach the steady state for upper level population distribution, the forward and backward amplified spontaneous emissions (ASEs) and stored energy on the system parameters including pump power, fiber length, Yb-doped concentration, and core area are numerically simulated, respectively. The results show that, by optimizing pump pulse width, stored energy can reach or even exceed the steady state value of continuous wave (CW) pump. By increasing Yb-doped concentration and core area, stored energy is increased, the ASE is suppressed and the ASE built-up time is postponed. In addition, the experimental results show the validity of the theoretical ASE built-up time. The obtained results can provide important guiding for the optimization of pump pulse width and fiber parameters.

Abstract:From the propagation equations of Yb~(3+)-doped fiber amplifiers, the characteristics of Yb~(3+)-doped double-clad fiber amplifier for 1053 nm pulse amplification are comprehensively analyzed through finite-difference method based on numerical modeling. The steady distributions in the fiber of the upper-level population,pump power, and amplified spontaneous emission with 977 nm forward pumping are calculated. The single pulse waveform distortion after amplification is analyzed. Modeling attains a special input waveform which can deduces the super-Gauss type output after pulse amplification. The most suitable fiber length and the impacts of forward pumping and backward pumping are also discussed.

Abstract:We report the generation of ultrashort pulses in ytterbium-doped fibre oscillator emitting around 1.05 mum at a repetition rate of 17.6MHz. A diode laser with single silica fibre at 976 nm pumps the ytterbium fibre laser, the all-fibre picosecond pulsed oscillator has excellent stability and compact size, and freedom from misalignment. After amplifying, pulse energy of 3.4 nJ and an average power of 60mW are obtained. The compression is obtained with a grating pair out of the cavity. The compressor produces 307 fs with the peak power 5.47 kW. A practical fibre-based source with good performance is thus demonstrated.
Multi-stage ytterbium fiber-amplifier seeded by a gain-switched laser diode

Abstract:We demonstrated all-fiber amplification of 11 ps pulses from a gain-switched laser diode at 1064 nm. The diode was driven at a repetition rate of 40 MHz and delivered 13 $\mu$W of fiber-coupled average output power. For the low output pulse energy of 325 fJ we have designed a multi-stage core pumped pre-amplifier in order to keep the contribution of undesired amplified spontaneous emission as low as possible. By using a novel time-domain approach for determining the power spectral density ratio (PSD) of signal to noise, we identified the optimal working point for our pre-amplifier. After the pre-amplifier we reduced the 40 MHz repetition rate to 1 MHz using a fiber coupled pulse-picker. The final amplification was done with a cladding pumped Yb-doped large mode area fiber and a subsequent Yb-doped rod-type fiber. With our setup we reached a total gain of 73 dB, resulting in pulse energies of >5.6 $\mu$J and peak powers of >0.5 MW. The average PSD-ratio of signal to noise we determined to be 18/1 at the output of the final amplification stage.

Abstract:In this paper, we reported an Yb-doped, femtosecond, chirped pulse amplification laser based on strictly all-fiber structure. It operated at a low repetition rate of 1 kHz and adopted the synchronously pumping technology to suppress ASE and heat accumulation. A chirped fiber Bragg grating providing adjustable dispersion is used as the pulse stretcher. High order dispersion induced by fiber, grating pair in the system was compensated accurately. Laser pulse with duration of 180 fs and energy of 112 μJ has been obtained. In addition, it has a high long-term stability of energy and a good beam quality, corresponding to energy fluctuation of 0.62% in an hour and M2 factor of 1.15, respectively.

Abstract:Based on numerical modeling, the dynamic characteristics of high-power ytterbium-doped double-clad fiber amplifiers during the amplification of nanosecond pulses with kilohertz repetition rates are comprehensively analyzed. The temporal pulse energy, power, upper-level population distribution, amplified spontaneous emission, stored energy, pulse waveform evolution, etc., are emphasized in this paper. Some practical issues in amplification processes, such as the impacts of reflected pulses from the external surfaces and the fluctuation of input pulse energy on the amplifier performance, are also discussed. The models and results are important for the design and development of high-power double-clad fiber amplifiers.
