Abstract:Catalysis based on two-dimensional silicon has been under intense investigation recently. However, its substandard catalytic activity is far from industrialization. In this work, we demonstrate a new solution to this problem formulated on the batch synthesis of siloxene with an enhanced specific surface area (217.8 m(2) g(-1)). A two-dimensional porous structure was prepared, enabling great support and dispersion of metal nanoparticles. Catalytic evaluations of such hybrid structures for the (photo)thermal CO2 hydrogenation reaction and the electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction revealed a significant performance advantage over the benchmark two-dimensional silicon structures synthesized via the conventional method. This work may confer notable viability on two-dimensional silicon for advanced energy, catalytic, and environmental applications.
Confined On-Surface Organic Synthesis: Strategies and Mechanisms

Abstract:On-surface synthesis has been one of the hottest research fields in surface science in the last decade, owing to its great potential for bottom-up synthesis of functional molecules and covalent nanomaterials. Compared to classical in-solution chemistry, all of the on-surface reactions are done without solvent, thus very minimal byproducts and no limitation of solubility are involved. However, because of its typically required ultra-high vacuum conditions, where only limited catalysts can be used, a key challenge for on-surface synthesis is the precise control of the reaction pathway. Countless efforts have been made for controllable synthesis of target chemical structures on surfaces by distinct strategies. These strategies can be summarized under following aspects: 1) rational choice of surfaces; 2) template effects based on two-dimensional (2D) environments; 3) on-surface thermodynamic and kinetic controls; 4) the participation of chemisorbed nonmetal adatoms on surfaces. This report reviews the recent progress toward the control of on-surface synthesis and raises a series of questions at the end, which deserve further explorations in the future.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) materials are characterised by their strong intraplanar bonding but weak interplanar interaction. Interfaces between neighboring 2D layers or between 2D overlayers and substrate surfaces provide intriguing confined spaces for chemical processes, which have stimulated a new area of "chemistry under 2D cover". In particular, well-defined 2D material overlayers such as graphene, hexagonal boron nitride, and transition metal dichalcogenides have been deposited on solid surfaces, which can be used as model systems to understand the new chemistry. In the present review, we first show that many atoms and molecules can intercalate ultrathin 2D materials supported on solid surfaces and the space under the 2D overlayers has been regarded as a 2D nanocontainer. Moreover, chemical reactions such as catalytic reactions, surface adlayer growth, chemical vapor deposition, and electrochemical reactions occur in the 2D confined spaces, which further act as 2D nanoreactors. It has been demonstrated that surface chemistry and catalysis are strongly modulated by the 2D covers, resulting in weakened molecule adsorption and enhanced surface reactions. Finally, we conclude that the confinement effect of the 2D cover leads to new chemistry in a small space, such as "catalysis under cover" and "electrochemistry under cover". These new concepts enable us to design advanced nanocatalysts encapsulated with 2D material shells which may present improved performance in many important processes of heterogeneous catalysis, electrochemistry, and energy conversion.

Abstract:On-surface synthesis, as an alternative to traditional in-solution synthesis, has become an emerging research field and attracted extensive attention over the past decade due to its ability to fabricate nanoarchitectures with exotic properties. Compared to wet chemistry, the on-surface synthesis conducted on atomically flat solid surfaces under ultrahigh vacuum exhibits unprecedented characteristics and advantages, opening novel reaction pathways for chemical synthesis. Various low-dimensional nanostructures have been fabricated on solid surfaces (mostly metal surfaces) based on this newly developed approach. This paper reviews the classic and latest works regarding carbon-based low-dimensional nanostructures since the arrival of on-surface synthesis era. These nanostructures are categorized into zero-, one- and two-dimensional classes and each class is composed of numerous sub-nanostructures. For certain specific nanostructures, comprehensive reports are given, including precursor design, substrate choice, synthetic strategies and so forth. We hope that our review will shed light on the fabrication of some significant nanostructures in this young and promising scientific area.
General and Efficient Synthesis of Two-Dimensional Monolayer Mesoporous Materials with Diverse Framework Compositions

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) mesoporous materials have received substantial research interest due to their highly exposed active sites and unusual nanoconfinement effect. However, controllable and efficient synthesis of 2D mesoporous materials and investigation of their intrinsic properties have remained quite rare. Herein, a general and effective surface-limited cooperative assembly (SLCA) method enabled by leveling precursor solutions on KCl crystals via centrifugation is employed to conveniently synthesize two-dimensional (2D) monolayer mesoporous materials with different compositions. This novel strategy is performed in a manner similar to spin coating, not only enabling generation of ultrathin mesostructured composite film on KCl particles and recycling excessive precursor solution but also providing favorable solvent annealing environment for the film to form ordered mesostructures. Taking monolayer mesoporous Ce0.8Zr0.2O2 solid solutions as a sample, they display ultrathin nanosheet morphology with a thickness of ∼20 nm, highly open porous structure, and easily accessible active sites of surface superoxide species. Upon decoration of 2D mesoporous Ce0.8Zr0.2O2 nanosheets with Pt nanoparticles, the obtained catalyst exhibits superior catalytic activity and stability toward CO oxidation with a low onset temperature of 30 °C and a 100% conversion temperature of 95 °C, which are 35-70 °C lower than those for their counterpart materials, namely, three-dimensional (3D) mesoporous Pt/Ce0.8Zr0.2O2. Moreover, their TOFPt value is ∼11.3 times higher than that of 3D mesoporous Pt/Ce0.8Zr0.2O2. Characterizations based on various techniques indicate that such an outstanding catalytic performance is due to the ultrashort distance (20 nm) of mass diffusion, highly exposed active sites, rich surface-chemisorbed oxygen, and the synergistic effect between the Ce0.8Zr0.2O2 matrix and Pt species.

Abstract:Protection of metal nanoparticles from agglomeration is critical for their functions and applications. The conventional method for enhancing their stability is to cover them with passivation layers to prevent direct contact. However, the presence of a protective shell blocks exposure of the metal species to reactants, thereby significantly impeding the nanoparticles' utility as catalysts. Here, we report that metal nanoparticles can be prepared and used in a surface-exposed state that renders them inherently catalytically active. This strategy is realised by spatial confinement and electronic stabilisation with a dual-module mesoporous and microporous three-dimensional π-network in which surface-exposed nanoparticles are crystallised upon in situ reduction. The uncovered palladium nanoparticles serve as heterogeneous catalysts that are exceptionally active in water, catalyse unreactive aryl chlorides for straightforward carbon-carbon bond formation and are stable for repeated use in various types of cross couplings. Therefore, our results open new perspectives in developing practical heterogeneous catalysts.

Abstract:Surface and interface designs are an efficient strategy to fabricate innovative and advanced catalysts. A prerequisite for this is a fundamental understanding of the structure-performance relations of catalyst nanoparticles, which, however, remains a formidable challenge due to the complexity of heterogeneous catalysis. Recent progresses in catalytic nanocrystals with uniform and well-defined structures, in situ characterization techniques, and theoretical calculations have offered opportunities for the fundamental studies of heterogeneous catalysis, and the achieved outputs are turning the innovation of efficient catalysts via surface and interface designs into a reality. Herein, the recent advances in the fundamental-understanding-directed rational surface and interface designs for heterogeneous catalysis, including crystal phase design, morphology/facet design, and size design, are presented. Perspectives are also discussed for the innovation of efficient catalysts via the fundamental-understanding-directed surface and interface designs followed by controlled synthesis.

Abstract:2D black phosphorus (BP) and transition metal chalcogenides (TMCs) have beneficial electronic, optical, and physical properties at the few-layer limit. However, irreversible degradation of exfoliated or chemical vapor deposition-grown ultrathin BP and TMCs like GaSe via oxidation under ambient conditions limits their applications. Herein, the on-surface growth of an oxidation-resistant 2D thin film of a metal coordination polymer is demonstrated by multiscale simulations. We show that the preparation of such hetero-structures can be conducted in solution, in which pristine BP and GaSe present better stability than in an air environment. Our calculations reveal that the interaction between the polymer layer and 2D materials is dominated by van der Waals forces; thus, the electronic properties of pristine BP and GaSe are well preserved. Meanwhile, the isolation from oxygen and water can be achieved by monolayer polymers, due to the nature of their close-packed layers. Our facile strategy for enhancing the environmental stability of ultrathin materials is expected to accelerate efforts to implement 2D materials in electronic and optoelectronic applications.

Abstract:Abstract The synthesis of high-quality ultrathin overlayers is critically dependent on the surface structure of substrates, especially involving the overlayer-substrate interaction. By using in situ surface measurements, we demonstrate that the overlayer-substrate interaction can be tuned by doping near-surface Ar nanobubbles. The interfacial coupling strength significantly decreases with near-surface Ar nanobubbles, accompanying by an “anisotropic to isotropic” growth transformation. On the substrate containing near-surface Ar, the growth front crosses entire surface atomic steps in both uphill and downhill directions with no difference, and thus, the morphology of the two-dimensional (2D) overlayer exhibits a round-shape. Especially, the round-shaped 2D overlayers coalesce seamlessly with a growth acceleration in the approaching direction, which is barely observed in the synthesis of 2D materials. This can be attributed to the immigration lifetime and diffusion rate of growth species, which depends on the overlayer-substrate interaction and the surface catalysis. Furthermore, the “round to hexagon” morphological transition is achieved by etching-regrowth, revealing the inherent growth kinetics under quasi-freestanding conditions. These findings provide a novel promising way to modulate the growth, coalescence, and etching dynamics of 2D materials on solid surfaces by adjusting the strength of overlayer-substrate interaction, which contributes to optimization of large-scale production of 2D material crystals.

Abstract:Surface-sensitive measurements are crucial to many types of researches in condensed matter physics.However,it is difficult to obtain atomically flat surfaces of many single crystals by the commonly used mechanical cleavage.We demonstrate that the grind-polish-sputter-anneal method can be used to obtain atomically flat surfaces on topological materials.Three types of surface-sensitive measurements are performed on CoSi（001） surface with dramatically improved quality of data.This method extends the research area of surface-sensitive measurements to hard-to-cleave alloys,and can be applied to irregular single crystals with selective crystalline planes.It may become a routine process of preparing atomically flat surfaces for surface-sensitive technologies.

Abstract:The recent developed bottom‐up on‐surface synthesis offers unprecedent opportunities for the fabrication of two‐dimensional (2D) carbon‐based networks with atomic precision. Hierarchical coupling approach has been proposed as an efficient strategy for improving the corresponding reaction selectivity and quality of target structures. Herein, we report the synthesis of a nitrogen‐doped carbon‐based network on Ag(100) utilizing a hierarchical Ullmann coupling strategy. The accurate identification of reaction intermediates and products by scanning tunneling microscopy allows us to unravel the reaction mechanism. The synthetic process of 2D carbon‐based networks is kinetics‐driven, relying on the competition between dechlorination and C−C coupling. We expect that our discussion on the mechanism of hierarchical coupling may shed light on the rational design and precise synthesis of 2D carbon‐based networks on surfaces.

Confined Catalysis Under Two-Dimensional Materials

Abstract:Confined microenvironments formed in heterogeneous catalysts have recently been recognized as equally important as catalytically active sites. Understanding the fundamentals of confined catalysis has become an important topic in heterogeneous catalysis. Well-defined 2D space between a catalyst surface and a 2D material overlayer provides an ideal microenvironment to explore the confined catalysis experimentally and theoretically. Using density functional theory calculations, we reveal that adsorption of atoms and molecules on a Pt(111) surface always has been weakened under monolayer graphene, which is attributed to the geometric constraint and confinement field in the 2D space between the graphene overlayer and the Pt(111) surface. A similar result has been found on Pt(110) and Pt(100) surfaces covered with graphene. The microenvironment created by coating a catalyst surface with 2D material overlayer can be used to modulate surface reactivity, which has been illustrated by optimizing oxygen reduction reaction activity on Pt(111) covered by various 2D materials. We demonstrate a concept of confined catalysis under 2D cover based on a weak van der Waals interaction between 2D material overlayers and underlying catalyst surfaces.

Abstract:Core-shell noble metal catalysts have gained significant attention in the past few decades, as they not only reduce the use of noble metals effectively but also exhibit unique properties derived from the synergistic effect between core and shell metals. In particular, regulating the surface structure of shells to maximize the atomic utilization efficiency of noble metals is critically important. Controlling the shell thickness of noble metal catalysts at the atomic level as an efficient approach to realize this goal has been attracting growing attention; this approach involves the formation of ultrathin shells (typically 2-6 atomic layers), monolayers, or even atomically dispersed noble metals embedded in the host metal. These strategies drive the core/support metals to improve the number of active sites and the intrinsic activity of the deposited noble metals remarkably, meanwhile minimizing the usage of noble metals. Herein, recent advances regarding atomic control of the core-shell noble metal catalysts is reviewed, with focus on the surface regulation. First, synthesis methods and surface structures are summarized, and then catalytic applications of these architectures are highlighted.

Abstract:The functional design of transition metal oxide heterostructures depends critically on the growth of atomically flat epitaxial thin films. Often, improved functionality is expected for heterostructures and surfaces with orientations that do not have the lowest surface free energy. For example, crystal faces with a high surface free energy, such as rutile (001) planes, frequently exhibit higher catalytic activities but are correspondingly harder to synthesize due to faceting transitions. Here we propose a broadly applicable rapid-anneal solid phase epitaxial synthesis approach for the creation of nanometer thin, high surface free energy oxide heterostructures that are atomically flat. We demonstrate its efficacy by synthesizing atomically flat epitaxial RuO2(001) and TiO2(001) model systems. The former have a superior oxygen evolution activity, quantified by their lower onset potential and higher current density, relative to that of more common RuO2(110) films.

Abstract:Surface chemistry focuses on the investigation of the adsorption, migration, assembly, activation, reaction, and desorption of atoms and molecules at surfaces. Surface chemistry plays the pivotal roles in both fundamental science and applied technology. This review will summarize the recent progresses on surface assembly, synthesis and catalysis investigated mainly by scanning tunneling microscopy and atomic force microscopy. Surface assemblies of water and small biomolecules, construction of Sierpi & nacute;ski triangles and surface chirality are summarized. On-surface synthesis of conjugated carbo- and heterocycles and other kinds of carbon nanostructures are surveyed. Surface model catalysis, including single-atom catalysis and electrochemical catalysis, are discussed at the single-atom level.
