Abstract:Two-dimensional materials and single-atom catalysts are two frontier research fields in catalysis. A new category of catalysts with the integration of both aspects has been rapidly developed in recent years, and significant advantages were established to make it an independent research field. In this Review, we will focus on the concept of two-dimensional materials confining single atoms for catalysis. The new electronic states via the integration lead to their mutual benefits in activity, that is, two-dimensional materials with unique geometric and electronic structures can modulate the catalytic performance of the confined single atoms, and in other cases the confined single atoms can in turn affect the intrinsic activity of two-dimensional materials. Three typical two-dimensional materials are mainly involved here, i.e., graphene, g-C3N4, and MoS2, and the confined single atoms include both metal and nonmetal atoms. First, we systematically introduce and discuss the classic synthesis methods, advanced characterization techniques, and various catalytic applications toward two-dimensional materials confining single-atom catalysts. Finally, the opportunities and challenges in this emerging field are featured on the basis of its current development.

Abstract:The unique electronic and structural properties of 2D materials have triggered wide research interest in catalysis. The lattice of 2D materials and the interface between 2D covers and other substrates provide intriguing confinement environments for active sites, which has stimulated a rising area of "confinement catalysis with 2D materials." Fundamental understanding of confinement catalysis with 2D materials will favor the rational design of high‐performance 2D nanocatalysts. Confinement catalysis with 2D materials has found extensive applications in energy‐related reaction processes, especially in the conversion of small energy‐related molecules such as O2, CH4, CO, CO2, H2O, and CH3OH. Two representative strategies, i.e., 2D lattice‐confined single atoms and 2D cover‐confined metals, have been applied to construct 2D confinement catalytic systems with superior catalytic activity and stability. Herein, the recent advances in the design, applications, and structure–performance analysis of two 2D confinement catalytic systems are summarized. The different routes for tuning the electronic states of 2D confinement catalysts are highlighted and perspectives on confinement catalysis with 2D materials toward energy conversion and utilization in the future are provided.

Abstract:Single atoms loaded on two-dimensional materials () have been broadly explored recently in the field of catalysis. Compared with conventional supports, 2D materials with large surface areas, unique geometric structure, and electronic properties can boost the catalytic performances of anchored single noble atoms (SNAs). Meanwhile, the monodispersed atoms not only show much higher atom utilization, than their bulk or nanoparticle counterparts, but also provide an alternative reaction pathway with excellent activity and selectivity. However, the combination of a 2D material with single atoms still comes across some challenges, such as low mass loading, difficulty in anchoring the single atoms on the 2D substrates, and difficulty in mass production. In this review, single noble-metal atoms based on two-dimensional materials () is critically discussed. First, are generally introduced, including their definition, characterization, and their importance and advantages in catalysis applications. Then, the recent progress in using the for the photocatalytic, electrocatalytic, and thermocatalytic reactions is thoroughly reviewed and critically discussed. The superiority and the disadvantages of in each catalytic reaction are also considered. Finally, the current challenges and opportunities in the synthesis and applications of are clearly highlighted.
Confined Catalysis Under Two-Dimensional Materials

Abstract:Confined microenvironments formed in heterogeneous catalysts have recently been recognized as equally important as catalytically active sites. Understanding the fundamentals of confined catalysis has become an important topic in heterogeneous catalysis. Well-defined 2D space between a catalyst surface and a 2D material overlayer provides an ideal microenvironment to explore the confined catalysis experimentally and theoretically. Using density functional theory calculations, we reveal that adsorption of atoms and molecules on a Pt(111) surface always has been weakened under monolayer graphene, which is attributed to the geometric constraint and confinement field in the 2D space between the graphene overlayer and the Pt(111) surface. A similar result has been found on Pt(110) and Pt(100) surfaces covered with graphene. The microenvironment created by coating a catalyst surface with 2D material overlayer can be used to modulate surface reactivity, which has been illustrated by optimizing oxygen reduction reaction activity on Pt(111) covered by various 2D materials. We demonstrate a concept of confined catalysis under 2D cover based on a weak van der Waals interaction between 2D material overlayers and underlying catalyst surfaces.

Abstract:Developing highly active and stable electrocatalysts is significant for generating green energy. Ultrahigh exposed active atoms, tunable electronic properties, and high charge migration rate offer a substantial scope of two-dimensional (2D) materials as advanced electrocatalysts but still face limited intrinsic activities and poor stability. Confining metal or non-metal atoms in 2D materials has recently expressed high activity and stability due to the regulated electronic structure. In this review, based on the analysis of the structure of 2D materials, we systematically summarize and elucidate the scientific essence of improved electrocatalysis activity by confining atoms. First, we introduce the favorable structure of 2D single-element and compound materials for electrocatalysis. Then, recent progress in intrinsic and interface structure regulation of modified 2D material by coordination- and substitution-confinement is comprehensively reviewed with a special focus on the advances in interface structure regulation by metal atoms confinement. Finally, future research directions and opportunities for developing more advanced 2D confinement material for electrocatalysis are proposed. This review offers some guidance in the rational construction of efficient 2D materials by atom confinement for meeting the high demands in electrocatalysts.

Abstract:In recent years, single-atom catalysts (SACs) have received extensive attention due to their unique structure and excellent performance. Currently, a variety of porous materials are used as confined single-atom catalysts, such as zeolites, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), or carbon nitride (CN). The support plays a key role in determining the coordination structure of the catalytic metal center and its catalytic performance. For example, the strong interaction between the metal and the carrier induces the charge transfer between the metal and the carrier, and ultimately affects the catalytic behavior of the single-atom catalyst. Porous materials have unique chemical and physical properties including high specific surface area, adjustable acidity and shape selectivity (such as zeolites), and are rational support materials for confined single atoms, which arouse research interest in this field. This review surveys the latest research progress of confined single-atom catalysts for porous materials, which mainly include zeolites, CN and MOFs. The preparation methods, characterizations, application fields, and the interaction between metal atoms and porous support materials of porous material confined single-atom catalysts are discussed. And we prospect for the application prospects and challenges of porous material confined single-atom catalysts.

Abstract:The catalytic approaches fulfilled by the singly dispersed metal atoms anchoring on the solid materials were categorized as single-atom catalysis. In this perspective, after briefly introducing the history in this research field, we compare the differences between single-atom catalyst and several terms indicating some heterogeneous highly dispersed metal catalysts. Single-atom catalysts could provide the simplified models in exploring the catalytically active structures, and a new era of designing catalysts at the atomic scale is thus opened. In this context, single-atom catalysis may be regarded as a bridge to combine the homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis. Moreover, the materials containing isolated metal centers also provide great opportunities in many other applications, such as medicinal treatment, selective separation of gas molecule, and quantum devices. At last, challenges to the single-atom catalysis are discussed.

Abstract:Benefiting from the high specific surface area and the ensuing novel electronic structures, atomically thin two-dimensional (2D) solids have drawn intense interest in the field of carbon dioxide (CO2) catalysis. Here we review the major advantages of atomically thin 2D solids for electrochemical CO2 reduction, and special emphasis will be paid to the recent advances in fine characterization and controllable tailoring of the local atomic and electronic structure. Because surface atoms in atomically thin 2D solids are comparable to the overall atoms, we highlight surface modifications, such as molecular functionalization, heteroatom incorporation, and defect engineering, as effective ways to manipulate the reactivity. Finally, the major challenges and opportunities for future development of this field are discussed. As a well-defined model system, atomically thin 2D solids offer practical possibilities to study the structure–catalytic activity relationship at the atomic level.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) materials have been utilized broadly in kinds of catalytic reactions due to their fully exposed active sites and special electronic structure. Compared with real catalysts, which are usually bulk or particle, 2D materials have more well-defined structures. With easily identified structure-modulated engineering, 2D materials become ideal models to figure out the catalytic structure-function relations, which is helpful for the precise design of catalyst. In this review, the unique function of 2D materials was summarized from model study to reality catalysis and application. It includes several typical 2D materials, such as graphene, transition metal dichalcogenides, metal and metal (hydr)oxide materials. We introduced the structural characteristics of 2D materials and their advantages in model researches. It is emphatically summarized how 2D materials serve as models to explore the structure-activity relationship by combining theoretical calculations and surface researches. The opportunities of 2D materials and the challenges for fundamentals and applications they facing are also addressed. This review provides a reference for the design of catalyst structure and composition, and could inspire the realization of two-dimensional materials from model study to reality application in industry.

Abstract:Single-atom catalysts provide an ideal platform to bridge the gap between homogenous and heterogeneous catalysts. Here, the recent progress in this field is reported from the perspectives of static regulation and dynamic evolution. The syntheses and characterizations of single-atom catalysts are briefly discussed as a prerequisite for catalytic investigation. From the perspective of static regulation, the metal-support interaction is illustrated in how the supports alter the electronic properties of single atoms and how the single atoms activate the inert atoms in supports. The synergy between single atoms is highlighted. Besides these static views, the surface reconstruction, such as displacement and aggregation of single atoms in catalytic conditions, is summarized. Finally, the current technical challenges and mechanistic debates in single-atom heterogeneous catalysts are discussed.

Abstract:Dual atom catalysts, bridging single atom and metal/alloy nanoparticle catalysts, offer more opportunities to enhance the kinetics and multifunctional performance of oxygen reduction/evolution and hydrogen evolution reactions. However, the rational design of efficient multifunctional dual atom catalysts remains a blind area and is challenging. In this study, we achieved controllable regulation from Co nanoparticles to CoN single atoms to CoN dual atoms using an atomization and sintering strategy via an N-stripping and thermal-migrating process. More importantly, this strategy could be extended to the fabrication of 22 distinct dual atom catalysts. In particular, the CoN dual atom with tailored spin states could achieve ideally balanced adsorption/desorption of intermediates, thus realizing superior multifunctional activity. In addition, it endows Zn-air batteries with long-term stability for 800 h, allows water splitting to continuously operate for 1000 h, and can enable solar-powered water splitting systems with uninterrupted large-scale hydrogen production throughout day and night. This universal and scalable strategy provides opportunities for the controlled design of efficient multifunctional dual atom catalysts in energy conversion technologies.

Abstract:Inorganic, organic, and hybrid two-dimensional (2D) materials are being developed for ever-expanding numbers of applications, though energy and catalysis remain the main drivers of their development. We present overviews of bottom-up and top-down synthetic strategies of such materials and examine manufacturing scalability issues. Mechanical, electrical, and thermal properties and their modulation are highlighted because they are fundamental to the above-mentioned drivers. The burgeoning importance of heterostructures in such materials, particularly for catalysis and electrode design and function is stressed. Detailed attention is given to applications of 2D materials to the electrocatalysis reactions: oxygen reduction, oxygen evolution, hydrogen evolution, carbon dioxide reduction, and nitrogen reduction. Water splitting, carbon dioxide reduction, and nitrogen reduction by photocatalysis are also examined. A perspective of expected advances in the expansion of applications and types of 2D materials, with a focus on heterostructure development, is presented in the conclusion.

Abstract:Great endeavors are undertaken to search for low-cost, rich-reserve, and highly efficient alternatives to replace precious-metal catalysts, in order to cut costs and improve the efficiency of catalysts in industry. However, one major problem in metal catalysts, especially nonprecious-metal catalysts, is their poor stability in real catalytic processes. Recently, a novel and promising strategy to construct 2D materials encapsulating nonprecious-metal catalysts has exhibited inimitable advantages toward catalysis, especially under harsh conditions (e.g., strong acidity or alkalinity, high temperature, and high overpotential). The concept, which originates from unique electron penetration through the 2D crystal layer from the encapsulated metals to promote a catalytic reaction on the outermost surface of the 2D crystal, has been widely applied in a variety of reactions under harsh conditions. It has been vividly described as "chainmail for catalyst." Herein, recent progress concerning this chainmail catalyst is reviewed, particularly focusing on the structural design and control with the associated electronic properties of such heterostructure catalysts, and also on their extensive applications in fuel cells, water splitting, CO2 conversion, solar cells, metal-air batteries, and heterogeneous catalysis. In addition, the current challenges that are faced in fundamental research and industrial application, and future opportunities for these fantastic catalytic materials are discussed.

Abstract:Atomically dispersed metal catalysts have triggered great interest in the field of catalysis owing to their unique features. The isolated single or few metal atoms can be anchored on substrates via chemical bonding or space confinement to maximize atom utilization efficiency. The key challenge lies in precisely regulating the geometric and electronic structure of active metal centers, thus significantly influencing the catalytic properties. Although several review papers were published on the preparation, characterization, and application of single‐atom catalysts (SACs), the comprehensive understanding of SACs, dual‐atom catalysts (DACs), and atomic clusters has never been systematically summarized. In this review, recent advances in the engineering of local environments of state‐of‐the‐art SACs, DACs, and atomic clusters for enhanced catalytic performance are highlighted. Firstly, various synthesis approaches for SACs, DACs, and atomic clusters are presented, focusing on how to stabilize single or few atoms on appropriate supports. Then, special attention is focused on the elucidation of local environments in terms of electronic state and coordination structure. Furthermore, a comprehensive summary of isolated single and few atoms for the applications of thermocatalysis, electrocatalysis, and photocatalysis is provided and discussed, with an emphasis on structure‐performance relationships. Finally, the potential challenges and future opportunities in this emerging field are offered for guiding the design of isolated metal catalysts for enhanced catalysis. Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) materials loaded with single atoms and clusters are being set at the forefront of catalysis due to their distinctive geometric and electronic features. However, the usually-complicated synthesis procedures impede in-depth clarification of their catalytic mechanisms. To this end, herein we developed an efficient one-step dimension-reduction carbonization strategy, with which we successfully architected a highly-efficient catalyst for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), featured with symbiotic cobalt single atoms and clusters decorated in two-dimensional (2D) ultra-thin (3.5 nm thickness) nitrogen-carbon nanosheets. The synergistic effects of the two components afford excellent oxygen reduction activity in alkaline media (E1/2 = 0.823 V vs. RHE) and thereof a high power density (146.61 mW cm-2) in an assembled Zn-air battery. As revealed by theoretical calculations, the cobalt clusters can regulate electrons surrounding those individual atoms and affect the adsorption of intermediate species. As a consequence, the derived active sites of single cobalt atoms lead to a significant improvement of the ORR performance. Thus, our work may fuel interests to delicate architecture of single atoms and clusters coexisting 2D support toward optimal electrocatalytic performance. Abstract:Photocatalysis has problems such as low light absorption efficiency and rapid recombination of photo generated electron hole pairs. Many studies have been conducted to improve these issues. This review encapsulates the progress and applications of two pioneering research fields in catalysis: single-atom and two-dimensional (2D) material catalysts. The advent of this new class of catalysts, which integrates single atoms onto 2D materials, has seen remarkable significant growth in recent years, offering distinctive advantages. The article delves into the array of synthesis methods employed for loading single atoms onto 2D materials, including the wet chemical approach, atomic layer deposition technique, and thermal decomposition method. A highlight of the review is the superior attributes of single-atom catalysts supported on 2D materials (SACs-2D) in photocatalysis, such as extending the light absorption wavelength range, enhancing the efficiency of photo-generated electron-hole pair separation, and accelerating redox kinetics. The review meticulously examines the diverse applications of SACs-2D photocatalysis, which encompass water splitting for hydrogen generation, carbon dioxide reduction, degradation of organic pollutants, nitrogen fixation and hydrogen peroxide synthesis. These applications demonstrate the potential of SACs-2D materials in addressing pressing environmental and energy challenges. Finally, this article evaluates the current state of this burgeoning field, discussing the opportunities and challenges ahead.
