Abstract:A long distance, distributed gas sensing using the micro-nano fiber evanescent wave (FEW) quartz enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy technique was demonstrated. Such a sensor scheme has the advantages of higher detection sensitivity, distributed gas sensing ability, lower cost, and a simpler fabrication procedure compared to conventional FEW gas sensors using a photonic crystal fiber or a tapered fiber with chemical sputtering. A 3 km single mode fiber with multiple tapers and an erbium doped fiber amplifier with an output optical power of 700 mW were employed to perform long distance, distributed gas measurements. Abstract:In a conventional system of quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (QEPAS), the size of block-like optical collimation focusing lens group is difficult to reduce, and the structural stability is poor, which makes it hard to adapt itself to some special conditions, such as narrow space and vibrating circumstance. Based on this situation, in this research the fiber evanescent wave technique is combined with QEPAS. Therefore, trace gas detection for acetylene (C2H2) based on an all-fiber structural QEPAS system is developed. To obtain the characteristics of fiber evanescent wave, the optical distribution of micro structural fiber is simulated and the evanescent wave power ratio is calculated based on the COMSOL Multiphysics software. In order to increase the QEPAS 2f signal amplitude, the optical path between fiber taper and quartz tuning fork (QTF) and the laser wavelength modulation depth are optimized. In addition, two kinds of QTFs with different resonant frequencies are optimized. Finally, a QTF with a lower resonant frequency of 30.720 kHz is adopted as the acoustic wave transducer, and a minimum detection limit (MDL) of 6.2510-4 (volume fraction) is obtained with a laser wavelength modulation depth of 0.24 cm-1. To investigate the evanescent wave power of micro structural fiber, the fiber taper diameter is measured by a scanning electron microscope. Subsequently, by combining the diameter of fiber taper with the theoretical calculation results, we determine an evanescent wave power of 455.9 W, and the normalization of noise equivalent absorption (NNEA) which indicates the sensor sensitivity is 4.1810-7 cm-1WHz-1/2.

Abstract:We present an all-fiber-based laser gas analyzer (LGA) employing quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (QEPAS) and a side-polished fiber (SPF). The LGA comprises a custom quartz tuning fork (QTF) with 0.8 mm prong spacing, two acoustic micro-resonators (mR) located on either side of the prong spacing, and a single-mode fiber containing a 17 mm polished section passing through both mRs and QTF. The SPF polished face is positioned to enable the evanescent wave (EW) to create a photoacoustic wave and excite the fundamental flexural mode of the QTF. Sensor performance was demonstrated using methane in nitrogen gas mixtures, with CH 4 mixing ratios ranging from 75 ppmv to 1% (by volume), measured with an accumulation time of 300 ms, and a minimum detection limit of 34 ppmv subsequently determined. The EW-QEPAS sensor is ideal for miniaturization, as it does not contain any free-space optics and is suitable for gas sensing in harsh environments and where mobility is required.

Abstract:An ultra compact all-fiber quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (QEPAS) sensor using quartz tuning fork (QTF) with a low resonance frequency of 30.72 kHz was demonstrated. Such a sensor architecture has the advantages of easier optical alignment, lower insertion loss, lower cost, and more compact compared with a conventional QEPAS sensor using discrete optical components for laser delivery and coupling to the QTF. A fiber beam splitter and three QTFs were employed to perform multi-point detection and demonstrated the potential of spatially resolved measurements.

Abstract:Laser spectroscopy based techniques have the advantages of high sensitivities, high selectivities, non-invasiveness and in situ, real-time observations. They are widely used in numerous fields, such as environmental monitoring, life science, medical diagnostics, manned space flight, and planetary exploration. Owing to the merits of low cost, compact volume and strong environment adaptability, quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (QEPAS) based sensing is an important laser spectroscopy-based method of detecting the trace gas, which was invented in 2002. Detection sensitivity is a key parameter for gas sensors because it determines their real applications. In this paper, focusing on the detection sensitivity, the common methods for QEPAS are summarized. High power laser including amplified diode laser by erbium doped fiber amplifier (EDFA), and quantum cascade laser are used to improve the excitation intensity of acoustic wave. The absorption line of gas molecules located at the fundamental bands of mid-infrared region is adopted to increase the laser absorption strength. Micro-resonator is employed to enhance the generated acoustic pressure by forming a standing wave cavity. Quartz tuning forks (QTFs) with low resonant frequency are used to increase the accumulation time of acoustic energy in itself. Multi-pass strategy is utilized to amplify the action length between laser beam and target gas in the prongs of QTF. The advantages and disadvantages of the above methods are discussed respectively. For the issues in real applications, the all-fiber strucure in near-infared region and mid-infrared region and miniaturization using three-dimensional(3D) printing technique for QEPAS sensor are summarized. A QEPAS technique based multi-gas sensor is used to quantify the concentration of carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO 2 ), hydrogen cyanide (HCN), and hydrogen chloride (HCl) for post-fire cleanup aboard spacecraft, which is taken for example for the real application.Finally, the methods of further improving the sensitivity of QEPAS sensor are proposed.

Abstract:Laser absorption spectroscopy for gas sensing basically employs an air pump located at the gas cell probe to draw in ambient gases, and the on-site gas sample is subsequently delivered for laboratory non-real-time analysis. In this study, an in situ all-fiber remote gas sensing strategy is proposed. The anti-resonant hollow-core fiber (AR-HCF) is used as the sensing fiber, and a 20 m middle-hole eccentric-core fiber (MH-ECF) is used as the conducting fiber. The remote ambient gases can be inhaled into the AR-HCF as a result of the negative pressure transmitted through the MH-ECF when pumping gas at the interface of the MH-ECF. Since the real-time monitoring of greenhouse gas emissions in industrial processes holds immense significance in addressing global climate change, the detection of CO2 is achieved with the TDLAS-WMS method, and the gas sensing performance of an all-fiber remote gas sensing structure (RGS) is experimentally validated. The response time t90 under the pumping condition is about 456 s, which is about 30 times faster than that of free diffusion. Allan deviation results for more than one hour of continuous monitoring indicate that the lowest detection limit for the all-fiber RGS is 0.0373% when the integration time is 184 s. The all-fiber remote gas sensing strategy also possesses the benefits of being applicable to multiplex, hazardous gas environment passive monitoring.

Abstract:In this paper, a mid-infrared quasi-distributed carbon monoxide (CO) gas sensing based on quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (QEPAS) and hollow waveguide (HWG) was proposed for the first time. Three micropores with a diameter of 200 μm were developed at three different locations of a HWG with a length of 30 cm. Three customized low-frequency quartz tuning forks (QTFs) with a resonant frequency of 8.7 kHz were used to detect the photoacoustic signals generated at the micropores to achieve quasi-distributed measurements of CO, which provides a new idea for monitoring the leakage of gas pipelines and so on. In order to improve the performance of the gas detection system, the strongest absorption line with CO located at 2179.77 cm−1 (4.58 µm) was selected as the target absorption line, and a quantum cascade laser (QCL) was used as the excitation source to achieve the detection of CO in the mid infrared spectral region. The experimental results show that all three QTFs have excellent concentration linear response to CO, and the minimum detection limit (MDL) of the three QTFs to CO were 2.40 ppm, 2.59 ppm, and 2.34 ppm, respectively. Finally, the experiment tested the response ability of three QTFs to different concentrations of CO at the same time. The results showed that for micropores with different concentrations, all three QTFs can detect their corresponding concentrations, which proves that the sensor can achieve quasi-distributed measurement.

Abstract:An all-optical double-pass quartz enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (QEPAS) sensor for the detection of acetylene (C 2 H 2 ) at part-per-billion (ppb) levels was developed and experimentally validated. By employing an erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) capable of emitting up to 1 W of optical power, a commercial quartz tuning fork (QTF) resonating at 30.7 kHz, and double-pass acoustic microresonators, the amplitude of the QEPAS signal was significantly enhanced, thereby improving the sensitivity of the C 2 H 2 -QEPAS sensor. Instead of using piezoelectric detection in conventional QEPAS, a highly sensitive fiber-optic Fabry–Perot interferometer (FPI) was employed to measure the vibration of the QTF prong. A working point self-stabilizing technique was exploited to improve the demodulation sensitivity and stability. The linear response of the sensor to laser power and C 2 H 2 concentration confirmed that no saturation occurred. With an excitation laser power of 1 W and a C 2 H 2 absorption line of 1532.83 nm, a C 2 H 2 minimum detection limit (MDL) of 19.1 ppb was achieved, corresponding to a normalized noise equivalent absorption coefficient (NNEA) of 1.58 × 10 −8 cm −1 ∙W∙Hz −1/2 . Owing to its high sensitivity, long-term stability, and immunity to electromagnetic interferences, the QEPAS sensor provides considerable potential for remote gas sensing in environmental monitoring and other applications.

Abstract:An all-optical quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy system (QEPAS) with quadrature point stabilization for trace gas detection was reported. The extrinsic interferometry-based optical fiber Fabry–Perot sensor with quadrature point self-stabilization for detection of quartz prong vibration was used to replace the conventional one. The optimal coefficient of the modulation depth was ∼2.2 theoretically and experimentally, corresponding to the modulation depth of ∼0.1795 cm −1 at an acetylene (C 2 H 2 ) absorption line of 6534.36 cm −1 . Furthermore, the enhancement of QEPAS signal was obtained by using different microresonators. The minimum detectable limit of ∼580 parts per billion by volume (ppbv) was obtained. A normalized noise equivalent absorption coefficient for C 2 H 2 of 2.95 × 10 −7 cm −1 ·W·Hz –1/2 was obtained. The detection sensitivity was enhanced by a factor of ∼2.1 in comparison to the conventional QEPAS system. The linear correlation coefficient of the QEPAS signal response to the C 2 H 2 concentration was 0.998 within the range from 10 parts per million by volume (ppmv) to 500 ppmv. Finally, the long-term stability of the QEPAS system was evaluated using Allan deviation analysis, and the ultimate detection limit of ∼130 ppbv was reached for an optimum averaging time of ∼108 s at atmospheric pressure and ambient temperature.

Abstract:An optical gas sensing technique based on in-plane quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (IP-QEPAS) is reported. In IP-QEPAS, the laser beam is aligned in the plane of the quartz tuning fork (QTF) to increase the interaction area between the acoustic wavefront and the QTF. A custom T-shaped QTF with a prong length of 9.4 mm and a resonance frequency of 9.38 kHz was designed and employed in the IP-QEPAS sensor. For comparison, the traditional QEPAS sensor in which the laser beam is perpendicular to the QTF plane (PP-QEPAS) is investigated with the same operating conditions. Theoretical calculations of strain and displacement of the QTF prong were performed to support the advantage of using the IP-QEPAS technique. By selecting water vapor as the gas target, the IP-QEPAS sensor results in a signal more than 40 times higher than that measured with the PP-QEPAS configuration, confirming the potential of this approach.

Abstract:A sensitive trace gas sensor platform based on quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (QEPAS) is reported. A 1.395 μm continuous wave (CW), distributed feedback pigtailed diode laser was used as the excitation source and H2O was selected as the target analyte. Two kinds of quartz tuning forks (QTFs) with a resonant frequency (f0) of 30.72 kHz and 38 kHz were employed for the first time as an acoustic wave transducer, respectively for QEPAS instead of a standard QTF with a f0 of 32.768 kHz. The QEPAS sensor performance using the three different QTFs was experimentally investigated and theoretically analyzed. A minimum detection limit of 5.9 ppmv and 4.3 ppmv was achieved for f0 of 32.768 kHz and 30.72 kHz, respectively.

Abstract:Fiber-optic photoacoustic (PA) sensing has important applications in trace gas detection. The fiber-optic Fabry-Perot acoustic sensor implemented applying a cantilever is a novel and highly sensitive PA detector. Demodulation technologies such as intensity demodulation, optical cross-correlation demodulation and spectral demodulation are the key to improving the performance and engineering applications of fiber-optic PA sensors. For the detection of weak PA signals, the white-light interferometry based lock-in detection method is highlighted. On this basis, the miniature fiber-optic PA sensor with the special characteristics of high sensitivity, intrinsic safety, long-distance measurement, and immunity to electromagnetic interference can be designed by combining the cantilever and PA probe. This review also outlines the application of cantilever-enhanced fiber-optic PA sensing technology in the fields of online analyzing of high-voltage electrical equipment, leakage gas monitoring, coal mine spontaneous combustion monitoring and environmental gas monitoring. Finally, the future trend of fiber-optic PA sensing is presented.

Abstract:A novel quartz enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (QEPAS) trace gas detection scheme is reported in this paper. A cylindrical lens was employed for near-infrared laser focusing. The laser beam was shaped as a planar line laser between the gap of the quartz tuning fork (QTF) prongs. Compared with a spherical lens-based QEPAS sensor, the cylindrical lens-based QEPAS sensor has the advantages of easier laser beam alignment and a reduction of stringent stability requirements. Therefore, the reported approach is useful in long-term and continuous sensor operation.

Abstract:A compact, portable and rechargeable sensor platform based on quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (QEPAS) was demonstrated for the sensitive detection of carbon monoxide (CO). The acoustic detection module and the circuit components were both integrated which formed a sensor system with a weight of 3.2 kg and dimensions of 250 x 250 x 50 mm(3). Water vapor was added to the gas mixture in order to accelerate the vibration translation rate of CO molecules and improve the CO-QEPAS signal performance. An Allan deviation analysis was performed to assess the long-term performance of such a sensor system. For an integration time of 800 s, a minimum detection limit (MDL) of 21 ppb was obtained. To demonstrate the practical application of the reported compact and portable QEPAS sensor, a continuous measurement of CO from the combustion of three kinds of burning materials was performed.
Remote Multipoint Fiber Optic Gas Sensors Using an Fmcw Technique and A Tunable Laser

Abstract:The cost per sensing point may be reduced by networking a number of gas sensors that shares the same tunable laser and/or the same signal processing electronics. In this paper we report on the use of a frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) technique for addressing the remote optical fiber gas sensor arrays. The sensor network is of a ladder topology and is interrogated by a tunable external-cavity semiconductor lasers. The system performance in terms of detection sensitivity and crosstalk between sensors is investigated. By using appropriate wavelength modulation/scanning coupled with low pass filtering, the coherent interferometric noise can be reduced greatly. Computer simulation shows that an array of 20 acetylene (C2H2) gas sensors with 2000ppm (2.5cm gas cell, or 50ppm.m) detection sensitivity for each sensor may be realized. A two-sensor acetylene gas detection system is experimentally demonstrated with detection sensitivity of 165ppm/root Hz (2.5cm gas cell or 4ppm.m/root Hz) and crosstalk of -25dB.

A 1.395 mu m continuous wave (CW), fiber-coupled distributed feedback (DFB) diode laser was employed as the exciting source. Water vapor was selected as the target gas, and wavelength modulation spectroscopy (WMS) with 2nd harmonic detection was utilized. After optimization of the laser modulation depth, a minimum detection limit (MDL) of 139 ppmv was obtained.
