Abstract:An ultra compact all-fiber quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (QEPAS) sensor using quartz tuning fork (QTF) with a low resonance frequency of 30.72 kHz was demonstrated. Such a sensor architecture has the advantages of easier optical alignment, lower insertion loss, lower cost, and more compact compared with a conventional QEPAS sensor using discrete optical components for laser delivery and coupling to the QTF. A fiber beam splitter and three QTFs were employed to perform multi-point detection and demonstrated the potential of spatially resolved measurements.

Abstract:A sensitive trace gas sensor platform based on quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (QEPAS) is reported. A 1.395 μm continuous wave (CW), distributed feedback pigtailed diode laser was used as the excitation source and H2O was selected as the target analyte. Two kinds of quartz tuning forks (QTFs) with a resonant frequency (f0) of 30.72 kHz and 38 kHz were employed for the first time as an acoustic wave transducer, respectively for QEPAS instead of a standard QTF with a f0 of 32.768 kHz. The QEPAS sensor performance using the three different QTFs was experimentally investigated and theoretically analyzed. A minimum detection limit of 5.9 ppmv and 4.3 ppmv was achieved for f0 of 32.768 kHz and 30.72 kHz, respectively.

Abstract:A novel quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (QEPAS) sensor based on a micro quartz tuning fork (QTF) is reported. As a photoacoustic transducer, a novel micro QTF was 3.7 times smaller than the usually used standard QTF, resulting in a gas sampling volume of ~0.1 mm3. As a proof of concept, water vapor in the air was detected by using 1.39 μm distributed feedback (DFB) laser. A detailed analysis of the performance of a QEPAS sensor based on the micro QTF was performed by detecting atmosphere H2O. The laser focus position and the laser modulation depth were optimized to improve the QEPAS excitation efficiency. A pair of acoustic micro resonators (AmRs) was assembled with the micro QTF in an on-beam configuration to enhance the photoacoustic signal. The AmRs geometry was optimized to amplify the acoustic resonance. With a 1 s integration time, a normalized noise equivalent absorption coefficient (NNEA) of 1.97 × 10−8 W·cm−1·Hz−1/2 was achieved when detecting H2O at less than 1 atm.

Abstract:In this letter, a quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (QEPAS) based trace gas sensor using a quartz tuning fork (QTF) with resonant frequency of 40 kHz as the acoustic wave transducer was demonstrated for the first time. A 1.395 mu m continuous wave (CW), fiber-coupled distributed feedback (DFB) diode laser was employed as the exciting source. Water vapor was selected as the target gas, and wavelength modulation spectroscopy (WMS) with 2nd harmonic detection was utilized. After optimization of the laser modulation depth, a minimum detection limit (MDL) of 139 ppmv was obtained.

Abstract:A highly sensitive quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (QEPAS) sensor based on a custom quartz tuning fork (QTF) with a small-gap of 200 μm was demonstrated. With the help of the finite element modeling (FEM) simulation software COMSOL, the change tendency of the QEPAS signal under the influence of the laser beam vertical position and the length of the micro-resonator (mR) were calculated theoretically. Water vapor (H2O) was selected as the target analyte. The experimental results agreed well with those of the simulation, which verified the correctness of the theoretical model. An 11-fold signal enhancement was achieved with the addition of an mR with an optimal length of 5 mm in comparison to the bare QTF. Finally, the H2O-QEPAS sensor, which was based on a small-gap QTF, achieved a minimum detection limit (MDL) of 1.3 ppm, indicating an improvement of the sensor performance when compared to the standard QTF that has a gap of 300 μm.

Abstract:n improved quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (QEPAS) sensing system for trace gas detection is proposed. The optical fiber Fabry–Perot (F–P) demodulation method is used to replace the conventional electrical one in the QEPAS system. The experimental QEPAS system, which has a microresonator consisting of two stainless steel tubes with a length of 2.3 mm and an inner diameter of 0.9 mm, is implemented to detect the absorption of water vapor in the open environment. The structure parameters of the quartz tuning fork (QTF) are optimized in order to make the sensing system work more stably and reliably. Demonstration experiments are carried out. The vibration signal of the QTF was picked up by the optical fiber F–P demodulator and the conventional electrical scheme at the same time. Normalized noise equivalent absorption coefficients of 4.05× 10^-7 cm^-1 · W · Hz^-1/2 and 2.40× 10^-6 cm^-1 · W · Hz^-1/2 are obtained, respectively. The experimental result demonstrates that the sensitivity of the improved QEPAS sensing system with an optical fiber F–P demodulator is about 5.9 times higher than that of the conventional QEPAS system.

Abstract:A quartz enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (QEPAS) sensor, employing an erbium-doped fiber amplified laser source and a custom quartz tuning fork (QTF) with its two prongs spaced similar to 800 mu m apart, is reported. The sensor employs an acoustic micro-resonator (AmR) which is assembled in an "on-beam" QEPAS configuration. Both length and vertical position of the AmR are optimized in terms of signal-to-noise ratio, significantly improving the QEPAS detection sensitivity by a factor of similar to 40, compared to the case of a sensor using a bare custom QTF. The fiber-amplifier-enhanced QEPAS sensor is applied to H2S trace gas detection, reaching a sensitivity of similar to 890 ppb at 1 s integration time, similar to those obtained with a power-enhanced QEPAS sensor equipped with a standard QTF, but with the advantages of easy optical alignment, simple installation, and long-term stability. Abstract:For this invited manuscript, an in-plane single-quartz-enhanced dual spectroscopy (IP-SQEDS)-based trace gas sensor was demonstrated for the first time. A single quartz tuning fork (QTF) was employed to combine in-plane quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (IP-QEPAS) with light-induced thermoelastic spectroscopy (LITES) techniques. Water vapor (H2O) was chosen as the target gas. Compared to traditional QEPAS, IP-SQEDS not only allowed for simple structures, but also obtained nearly three times signal amplitude enhancement.

Abstract:A multi-quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (M-QEPAS) sensor system for trace gas detection is reported. Instead of a single quartz tuning fork (QTF) as used in QEPAS technique, a dual QTF sensor platform was adopted in M-QEPAS to increase the signal strength by the addition of the detected QEPAS signals. Water vapor was selected as the target analyte. M-QEPAS realized a 1.7 times signal enhancement as compared to the QEPAS method for the same operating conditions. A minimum detection limit of 23.9 ppmv was achieved for the M-QEPAS sensor, with a calculated normalized noise equivalent absorption coefficient of 5.95 × 10−8 cm−1W/√Hz. The M-QEPAS sensor performance can be further improved when more QTFs are employed or an acoustic micro-resonator architecture is used.

Abstract:Quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (QEPAS) is a sensitive gas detection technique which requires frequent calibration and has a long response time. Here we report beat frequency (BF) QEPAS that can be used for ultra-sensitive calibration-free trace-gas detection and fast spectral scan applications. The resonance frequency and Q-factor of the quartz tuning fork (QTF) as well as the trace-gas concentration can be obtained simultaneously by detecting the beat frequency signal generated when the transient response signal of the QTF is demodulated at its non-resonance frequency. Hence, BF-QEPAS avoids a calibration process and permits continuous monitoring of a targeted trace gas. Three semiconductor lasers were selected as the excitation source to verify the performance of the BF-QEPAS technique. The BF-QEPAS method is capable of measuring lower trace-gas concentration levels with shorter averaging times as compared to conventional PAS and QEPAS techniques and determines the electrical QTF parameters precisely.

Abstract:An optical gas sensing technique based on in-plane quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (IP-QEPAS) is reported. In IP-QEPAS, the laser beam is aligned in the plane of the quartz tuning fork (QTF) to increase the interaction area between the acoustic wavefront and the QTF. A custom T-shaped QTF with a prong length of 9.4 mm and a resonance frequency of 9.38 kHz was designed and employed in the IP-QEPAS sensor. For comparison, the traditional QEPAS sensor in which the laser beam is perpendicular to the QTF plane (PP-QEPAS) is investigated with the same operating conditions. Theoretical calculations of strain and displacement of the QTF prong were performed to support the advantage of using the IP-QEPAS technique. By selecting water vapor as the gas target, the IP-QEPAS sensor results in a signal more than 40 times higher than that measured with the PP-QEPAS configuration, confirming the potential of this approach.

Abstract:Methane (CH 4 ) is a greenhouse gas as well as being flammable and explosive. In this manuscript, quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (QEPAS) and heterodyne QEPAS (H-QEPAS) exploring a self-designed quartz tuning fork (QTF) with resonance frequency ( f 0 ) of ~8.7 kHz was utilized to achieve sensitive CH 4 detection. Compared with the standard commercial 32.768 kHz QTF, this self-designed QTF with a low f 0 and large prong gap has the merits of large energy accumulation time and low optical noise. The strongest line located at 6057.08 cm −1 in the 2 v 3 overtone band of CH 4 was chosen as the target absorption line. A diode laser with a high output power of > 30 mW was utilized as the excitation source. Acoustic micro-resonators (AmRs) were added to the sensor architecture to amplify the intensity of acoustic waves. Compared to the bare QTF, after the addition of AmRs, a signal enhancement of 149-fold and 165-fold were obtained for QEPAS and H-QEPAS systems, respectively. The corresponding minimum detection limits (MDLs) were 711 ppb and 1.06 ppm for QEPAS and H-QEPAS sensors. Furthermore, based on Allan variance analysis the MDLs can be improved to 19 ppb and 27 ppb correspondingly. Compared to the QEPAS sensor, the H-QEPAS sensor shows significantly shorter measurement timeframes, allowing for measuring the gas concentration quickly while simultaneously obtaining f 0 of QTF.

Abstract:A novel quartz enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (QEPAS) trace gas detection scheme is reported in this paper. A cylindrical lens was employed for near-infrared laser focusing. The laser beam was shaped as a planar line laser between the gap of the quartz tuning fork (QTF) prongs. Compared with a spherical lens-based QEPAS sensor, the cylindrical lens-based QEPAS sensor has the advantages of easier laser beam alignment and a reduction of stringent stability requirements. Therefore, the reported approach is useful in long-term and continuous sensor operation.

Abstract:In this paper, an on-beam quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (QEPAS) sensor based on a custom quartz tuning fork (QTF) acting as a photoacoustic transducer, was realized and tested. The QTF is characterized by a resonance frequency of 28 kHz, ~15% lower than that of a commercially available 32.7 kHz standard QTF. One-dimensional acoustic micro resonator (AmR) was designed and optimized by using stainless-steel capillaries. The 28 kHz QTF and AmRs are assembled in on-beam QEPAS configuration. The AmR geometrical parameters have been optimized in terms of length and internal diameter. The laser beam focus position and the AmR coupling distance were also adjusted to maximize the coupling efficiency. For comparison, QEPAS on-beam configurations based on a standard QTF and on the 28 kHz QTF were compared in terms of H2O and CO2 detection sensitivity. In order to better characterize the performance of the system, H2O, C2H2 and CO2 were detected for a long time and the long-term stability was analyzed by an Allan variance analysis. With the integration time of 1 s, the detection limits for H2O, C2H2 and CO2 are 1.2 ppm, 28.8 ppb and 2.4 ppm, respectively. The detection limits for H2O, C2H2 and CO2 can be further improved to 325 ppb, 10.3 ppb and 318 ppb by increasing the integration time to 521 s, 183 s and 116 s.

Abstract:A quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (QEPAS) gas sensor exploiting a fast and wideband electro-mechanical light modulator was developed. The modulator was designed based on the electro-mechanical effect of a commercial quartz tuning fork (QTF). The laser beam was directed on the edge surface of the QTF prongs. The configuration of the laser beam and the QTF was optimized in detail in order to achieve a modulation efficiency of ∼100%. The L-band single wavelength laser diode and a C-band tunable continuous wave laser were used to verify the performance of the developed QTF modulator, respectively, realizing a QEPAS sensor based on amplitude modulation (AM). As proof of concept, the AM-based QEPAS sensor demonstrated a detection limit of 45 ppm for H2O and 50 ppm for CO2 with a 1 s integration time respectively.

Abstract:An all-optical quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy system (QEPAS) with quadrature point stabilization for trace gas detection was reported. The extrinsic interferometry-based optical fiber Fabry–Perot sensor with quadrature point self-stabilization for detection of quartz prong vibration was used to replace the conventional one. The optimal coefficient of the modulation depth was ∼2.2 theoretically and experimentally, corresponding to the modulation depth of ∼0.1795 cm −1 at an acetylene (C 2 H 2 ) absorption line of 6534.36 cm −1 . Furthermore, the enhancement of QEPAS signal was obtained by using different microresonators. The minimum detectable limit of ∼580 parts per billion by volume (ppbv) was obtained. A normalized noise equivalent absorption coefficient for C 2 H 2 of 2.95 × 10 −7 cm −1 ·W·Hz –1/2 was obtained. The detection sensitivity was enhanced by a factor of ∼2.1 in comparison to the conventional QEPAS system. The linear correlation coefficient of the QEPAS signal response to the C 2 H 2 concentration was 0.998 within the range from 10 parts per million by volume (ppmv) to 500 ppmv. Finally, the long-term stability of the QEPAS system was evaluated using Allan deviation analysis, and the ultimate detection limit of ∼130 ppbv was reached for an optimum averaging time of ∼108 s at atmospheric pressure and ambient temperature.
