Abstract:When analytic quasi-periodic cocycles are defined on a high dimension torus, their Lyapunov exponents have perturbative positivity and continuity. In this article, we study a class of analytic quasi-periodic Jacobi cocycles defined on a two dimension torus. We show that in the non-perturbative large coupling regimes, the Lyapunov exponent is positive for any frequency and weak Holder continuous for the full-measured frequency.

Abstract:We introduce a unitary almost-Mathieu operator, which is obtained from a two-dimensional quantum walk in a uniform magnetic field. We exhibit a version of Aubry--André duality for this model, which partitions the parameter space into three regions: a supercritical region and a subcritical region that are dual to one another, and a critical regime that is self-dual. In each parameter region, we characterize the cocycle dynamics of the transfer matrix cocycle generated by the associated generalized eigenvalue equation. In particular, we show that supercritical, critical, and subcritical behavior all occur in this model. Using Avila's global theory of one-frequency cocycles, we exactly compute the Lyapunov exponent on the spectrum in terms of the given parameters. We also characterize the spectral type for each value of the coupling constant, almost every frequency, and almost every phase. Namely, we show that for almost every frequency and every phase the spectral type is purely absolutely continuous in the subcritical region, pure point in the supercritical region, and purely singular continuous in the critical region. In some parameter regions, we refine the almost-sure results. In the critical case for instance, we show that the spectrum is a Cantor set of zero Lebesgue measure for arbitrary irrational frequency and that the spectrum is purely singular continuous for all but countably many phases.

Abstract:In this paper, we show the following: the Hausdorff dimension of the spectrum of period-doubling Hamiltonian is bigger than logα/log 4, where α is the Golden number; there exists a dense uncountable subset of the spectrum such that for each energy in this set, the related trace orbit is unbounded, which is in contrast with a recent result of Carvalho (Nonlinearity 33, 2020); we give a complete characterization for the structure of gaps and the gap labelling of the spectrum. All of these results are consequences of an intrinsic coding of the spectrum we construct in this paper.

Abstract:This paper mainly deals with the Sturm-Liouville operator \begin{equation*} \mathbf{H}=\frac{1}{w(x)}\left( -\frac{\mathrm{d}}{\mathrm{d}x}p(x)\frac{ \mathrm{d}}{\mathrm{d}x}+q(x)\right) ,\text{ }x\in \Gamma \end{equation*} acting in $L_{w}^{2}\left( \Gamma \right) ,$ where $\Gamma $ is a metric graph. We establish a relationship between the bottom of the spectrum and the positive solutions of quantum graphs, which is a generalization of the classical Allegretto-Piepenbrink theorem. Moreover, we prove the Persson-type theorem, which characterizes the infimum of the essential spectrum.

Abstract:In this short note we observe, on locally symmetric spaces of higher rank, a connection between the growth indicator function introduced by Quint and the modified critical exponent of the Poincaré series equipped with the polyhedral distance. As a consequence, we provide a different characterization of the bottom of the $L^2$-spectrum of the Laplace-Beltrami operator in terms of the growth indicator function. Moreover, we explore the relationship between these three objects and the temperedness.

Abstract:We introduce $\mathfrak{F}$-positive elements in planar algebras. We establish the Perron-Frobenius theorem for $\mathfrak{F}$-positive elements. We study the existence and uniqueness of the Perron-Frobenius eigenspace. When it is not one-dimensional, we characterize its multiplicative structure. Moreover, we consider the Perron-Frobenius eigenspace as the space of logical qubits for mixed states in quantum information. We describe the relation between these mathematical results and quantum error correction, especially to the Knill-Laflamme theorem.

Computer Validation of Open Gaps for the Almost Mathieu Operator with Critical Coupling

Abstract:We present some computer assisted methods to prove the existence of spectral gaps for the Almost Mathieu operator at critical coupling and give rigorous numerical estimates on their size. As an example we show that the first 8 gaps predicted by the Gap Labelling theorem are open when $\omega=(\sqrt{5}-1)/2$ and 12 of them are open when $\omega=e-2$. A dynamical method based on the constructive conjugation to a hyperbolic cocycle and a spectral method based on the rigorous computation of the eigenvalues of finite-dimensional matrices are presented. We also present some experiments and conjectures on gap size for the associated peridodic problems.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a locally compact Hausdorff space, let $A$ be a partially ordered algebra, and let $\pi\colon \mathrm{C}_{\mathrm c}(X)\to A$ be a positive algebra homomorphism. Under conditions on $A$ that are satisfied in a good number of cases of practical interest, it is shown that $\pi$ is represented by a unique regular spectral measure $\mu$ on the Borel $\sigma$-algebra of $X$, taking its values in the positive idempotents in $A$. The measure $\mu$, which is $\sigma$-additive in an ordered sense, represents $\pi$ via the order integral (a generalisation of the Lebesgue integral) that goes back to J.D.M. Wright and which was investigated earlier by the authors. The positive algebra homomorphism $\pi$ can be extended from $\mathrm{C}_{\mathrm c}(X)$ to a positive linear map from the accompanying $L^1$-space of $\mu$ into $A$. It is shown that, quite often, this $L^1$-space is closed under multiplication, so that it is a vector lattice algebra, and that the extended map from $L^1$ into $A$ is not only an algebra homomorphism but, even when $A$ is not a vector lattice, also a vector lattice homomorphism in a sense that is explained in the paper. When $ A$ has the countable sup property, the image of $L^1$ (or of its positive cone) is described in terms of consecutive ups and downs of the image of ${\mathrm C}_{\mathrm c}(X)$ (or of its positive cone). The general results are applied in three different contexts, showing how various spectral theorems have a common order-theoretical root: representations on Banach lattices, on Hilbert spaces, and (the algebra need not consist of operators) spectral theory for JBW-algebras.

Abstract:We establish necessary and sufficient conditions for the discreteness of spectrum and strict positivity of magnetic Schrödinger operators with a positive scalar potential. They are expressed in terms of Wiener's capacity and the local energy of the magnetic field. The conditiions for the discreteness of spectrum depend, in particular, on a functional parameter which is a decreasing function of one variable whose argument is the normalized local energy of the magnetic field. This function enters the negligibility condition of sets for the scalar potential. We give a description for the range of all admissible functions which is precise in a certain sense. In case when there is no magnetic field, our results extend the discreteness of spectrum and positivity criteria by Molchanov [Molchanov, A. M. (1953). Spectral gaps, critical exponents and representations of negatively curved groups

Abstract:In this paper we introduce a notion of Poincaré exponent for isometric representations of discrete groups on Hilbert spaces. Similarly as growth exponents control the geometry this exponent is shown to control the size of spectral gaps. Following similar ideas as Patterson and Sullivan it is used in the case of negatively curved groups to construct weakly contained boundary representations reflecting the spectral properties of the original representation analogously as complementary series representations in the case of semi-simple Lie groups. This is exploited to deduced sharp estimates on spectral invariants. A quantitive property (T) á la Cowling is also established proving uniform bound on the mixing rate of representations of hyperbolic groups with property (T). Along the way some properties of boundary representations are discussed. A original characterisation of the positivity of the so-called Knapp-Stein operators and certain fusion rules on the boundary complementary series representations are established.

Abstract:The notions of joint and outer spectral radii are extended to the setting of Hilbert $C^*$-bimodules. A Rota-Strang type characterisation is proved for the joint spectral radius. In this general setting, an approximation result for the joint spectral radius in terms of the outer spectral radius has been established. This work leads to a new proof of the Wielandt-Friedland's formula for the spectral radius of positive maps. Following an idea of J. E. Pascoe, a positive map called the maximal part has been associated to any positive map with non-zero spectral radius, on finite dimensional $C^*$-algebras. This provides a constructive treatment of the Perron-Frobenius theorem. It is seen that the maximal part of a completely positive map has a very simple structure and it is irreducible if and only if the original map is irreducible. It is observed that algebras generated by tuples of matrices can be determined and their dimensions can be computed by realizing them as linear span of Choi-Kraus coefficients of some easily computable completely positive maps.

Abstract:We consider extended CMV matrices with analytic quasi-periodic Verblunsky coefficients with Diophantine frequency vector in the perturbatively small coupling constant regime and prove the analyticity of the tongue boundaries. As a consequence we establish that, generically, all gaps of the spectrum that are allowed by the Gap Labeling Theorem are open and hence the spectrum is a Cantor set. We also prove these results for a related class of almost periodic Verblunsky coefficients and present an application to suitable quantum walk models on the integer lattice.
