Abstract:It is well known that, an energy is in the spectrum of Fibonacci Hamiltonian if and only if the corresponding trace orbit is bounded. However, it is not known whether the same result holds for the Thue–Morse Hamiltonian. In this paper, we give a negative answer to this question. More precisely, we construct two subsets Σ _II and Σ _III of the spectrum of the Thue–Morse Hamiltonian, both of which are dense and uncountable, such that each energy in Σ _II∪Σ _III corresponds to an unbounded trace orbit. Exact estimates on the norm of the transfer matrices are also obtained for these energies: for E∈Σ _II∪Σ _III, the norms of the transfer matrices behave like e^c_1γ√(n)≤‖ T_ n(E)‖≤ e^c_2γ√(n). However, two types of energies are quite different in the sense that each energy in Σ _II is associated with a two-sided pseudo-localized state, while each energy in Σ _III is associated with a one-sided pseudo-localized state. The difference is also reflected by the local dimensions of the spectral measure: the local dimension is 0 for energies in Σ _II and is larger than 1 for energies in Σ _III. As a comparison, we mention another known countable dense subset Σ _I . Each energy in Σ _I corresponds to an eventually constant trace map and the associated eigenvector is an extended state. In summary, the Thue–Morse Hamiltonian exhibits “mixed spectral nature”.

Abstract: We find three dense subsets $\Sigma_I,\Sigma_{II}$ and $\Sigma_{III}$ of the spectrum of the Thue-Morse Hamiltonian, such that each energy in $\Sigma_I$ is extended, each energy in $\Sigma_{II}$ is pseudo-localized and each energy in $\Sigma_{III}$ is one-sided pseudo-localized. We also obtain exact estimations on the norm of the transfer matrices and the norm of the formal solutions for these energies. Especially, for $E\in \Sigma_{II}\cup\Sigma_{III}, $ the norms of the transfer matrices behave like $$ e^{c_1\gamma\sqrt{n}}\le\|T_{n}(E)\|\le e^{c_2\gamma\sqrt{n}}. $$ The local dimensions of the spectral measure on these subsets are also studied. The local dimension is $0$ for energy in $\Sigma_{II}$ and is larger than $1$ for energy in $\Sigma_{I}\cup\Sigma_{III}.$ In summary, the Thue-Morse Hamiltonian exhibits "mixed spectral nature".

Abstract:In this paper, we first prove the strong Birkhoff Ergodic Theorem for subharmonic functions with the irrational shift on the Torus. Then, we apply it to the analytic quasi-periodic Jacobi cocycles and show that for suitable frequency and coupling number, if the Lyapunov exponent of these cocycles is positive at one point, then it is positive on an interval centered at this point and Hölder continuous in \begin{document}$ E $\end{document} on this interval. What's more, if the coupling number of the potential is large, then the Lyapunov exponent is always positive for all irrational frequencies and Hölder continuous in \begin{document}$ E $\end{document} for all finite Liouville frequencies. For the Schrödinger cocycles, a special case of the Jacobi ones, its Lyapunov exponent is also Hölder continuous in the frequency and the lengths of the intervals where the Hölder condition of the Lyapunov exponent holds only depend on the coupling number.

Abstract:We consider the Fibonacci Hamiltonian, the central model in the study of electronic properties of one-dimensional quasicrystals, and provide a detailed description of its spectrum and spectral characteristics (namely, the optimal Hölder exponent of the integrated density of states, the dimension of the density of states measure, the dimension of the spectrum, and the upper transport exponent) for all values of the coupling constant (in contrast to all previous quantitative results, which could be established only in the regime of small or large coupling). In particular, we show that the spectrum of this operator is a dynamically defined Cantor set and that the density of states measure is exact-dimensional; this implies that all standard fractal dimensions coincide in each case. We show that all the gaps of the spectrum allowed by the gap labeling theorem are open for all values of the coupling constant. Also, we establish strict inequalities between the four spectral characteristics in question, and provide the exact large coupling asymptotics of the dimension of the density of states measure (for the other three quantities, the large coupling asymptotics were known before). A crucial ingredient of the paper is the relation between spectral properties of the Fibonacci Hamiltonian and dynamical properties of the Fibonacci trace map (such as dimensional characteristics of the non-wandering hyperbolic set and its measure of maximal entropy as well as other equilibrium measures, topological entropy, multipliers of periodic orbits). We establish exact identities relating the spectral and dynamical quantities, and show the connection between the spectral quantities and the thermodynamic pressure function.

Abstract:In this paper, we show the following: the Hausdorff dimension of the spectrum of period-doubling Hamiltonian is bigger than logα/log 4, where α is the Golden number; there exists a dense uncountable subset of the spectrum such that for each energy in this set, the related trace orbit is unbounded, which is in contrast with a recent result of Carvalho (Nonlinearity 33, 2020); we give a complete characterization for the structure of gaps and the gap labelling of the spectrum. All of these results are consequences of an intrinsic coding of the spectrum we construct in this paper.

Abstract:We study the spectral properties of the Sturm Hamiltolian of eventually constant type, which includes the Fibonacci Hamiltonian. Let s be the Hausdorff dimension of the spectrum. For V > 20, we show that the restriction of the s -dimensional Hausdorff measure to the spectrum is a Gibbs type measure; the density of states measure is a Markov measure. Based on the fine structures of these measures, we show that both measures are exact dimensional; we obtain exact asymptotic behaviors for the optimal Hölder exponent and the Hausdorff dimension of the density of states measure and for the Hausdorff dimension of the spectrum. As a consequence, if the frequency is not silver number type, then for V big enough, we establish strict inequalities between these three spectral characteristics. We achieve them by introducing an auxiliary symbolic dynamical system and applying the thermodynamical and multifractal formalisms of almost additive potentials.
Almost sure dimensional properties for the spectrum and the density of states of Sturmian Hamiltonians

Abstract:In this paper, we find a full Lebesgue measure set of frequencies $\check \II\subset [0,1]\setminus \Q$ such that for any $(\alpha,\lambda)\in \check \II\times [24,\infty)$, the Hausdorff and box dimensions of the spectrum of the Sturmian Hamiltonian $H_{\alpha,\lambda,\theta}$ coincide and are independent of $\alpha$. Denote the common value by $D(\lambda)$, we show that $D(\lambda)$ satisfies a Bowen type formula, and is locally Lipschitz. We obtain the exact asymptotic behavior of $D(\lambda)$ as $\lambda$ tends to $ \infty.$ This considerably improves the result of Damanik and Gorodetski (Comm. Math. Phys. 337, 2015). We also show that for any $(\alpha,\lambda)\in \check \II\times [24,\infty)$, the density of states measure of $H_{\alpha,\lambda,\theta}$ is exact-dimensional; its Hausdorff and packing dimensions coincide and are independent of $\alpha$. Denote the common value by $d(\lambda)$, we show that $d(\lambda)$ satisfies a Young type formula, and is Lipschitz. We obtain the exact asymptotic behavior of $d(\lambda)$ as $\lambda$ tends to $ \infty.$ During the course of study, we also answer several questions in the same paper of Damanik and Gorodetski.

Abstract:On a one-dimensional lattice without uniform interval, the Hermitian conjugation of a q-differential operator is discussed. Then a deformation of quantum mechanics in one dimension is presented. As an application, the harmonic oscillator is discussed. The energy spectrum and the eigenfunctions are shown to depend on an arbitrary deformation function. The deformed coherent states are also discussed. It is found that the completeness relation of coherent states holds for the case of q-coherent states, i.e. the deformation of the Heisenberg-Weyl algebra is a q-analogue Hopf algebra.

Abstract:It was proved by Shen that the graph of the classical Weierstrass function Sigma(infinity)(n =0) lambda(n) cos(2 pi b(n)x) has Hausdorff dimension 2 + log lambda/log b, for every integer b >= 2 and every l is an element of(1/b, 1) [Hausdorff dimension of the graph of the classical Weierstrass functions, Math. Z., 289 (2018), 223-266]. In this paper, we prove that the dimension formula holds for every integer b >= 3 and every lambda is an element of(1/b, 1) if we replace the function cos by sin in the definition of Weierstrass function. A class of more general functions are also discussed.

Abstract:Let α∈(0,1) be irrational and [0;a1,a2,…] be the continued fraction expansion of α. Let Hα,V be the Sturm Hamiltonian with frequency α and coupling V, Σα,V be the spectrum of Hα,V. The fractal dimensions of the spectrum have been determined by Fan, Liu and Wen (2011) [8] when {an}n⩾1 is bounded. The present paper will treat the most difficult case, i.e., {an}n⩾1 is unbounded. We prove that for V⩾24,dimHΣα,V=s⁎(V)anddim¯BΣα,V=s⁎(V), where s⁎(V) and s⁎(V) are lower and upper pre-dimensions respectively. By this result, we determine the fractal dimensions of the spectrums for all Sturm Hamiltonians.

Abstract: We study the behavior of a polynomial sequence which is defined by iterating a polynomial pair under Thue-Morse dynamic. We show that in suitable sense, the sequence will behave like $\{2\cos 2^nx: n\ge 1\}$. Basing on this property we can show that the Hausdorff dimension of the spectrum of the Thue-Morse Hamiltonian has a common positive lower bound for all coupling.

Abstract:We study a magnetic Schr{ö}dinger Hamiltonian, with axisymmetric potential in any dimension. The associated magnetic field is unitary and non constant. The problem reduces to a 1D family of singular Sturm-Liouville operators on the half-line indexed by a quantum number. We study the associated band functions. They have finite limits that are the Landau levels. These limits play the role of thresholds in the spectrum of the Hamiltonian. We provide an asymptotic expansion of the band functions at infinity. Each Landau level concerns an infinity of band functions and each energy level is intersected by an infinity of band functions. We show that among the band functions that intersect a fixed energy level, the derivative can be arbitrary small. We apply this result to prove that even if they are localized in energy away from the thresholds, quantum states possess a bulk component. A similar result is also true in classical mechanics.

Abstract:Starting from a new discrete spectral problem, the corresponding positive and negative hierarchies of nonlinear lattice equations are proposed.
