Abstract:In this paper, we find a full Lebesgue measure set of frequencies $\check \II\subset [0,1]\setminus \Q$ such that for any $(\alpha,\lambda)\in \check \II\times [24,\infty)$, the Hausdorff and box dimensions of the spectrum of the Sturmian Hamiltonian $H_{\alpha,\lambda,\theta}$ coincide and are independent of $\alpha$. Denote the common value by $D(\lambda)$, we show that $D(\lambda)$ satisfies a Bowen type formula, and is locally Lipschitz. We obtain the exact asymptotic behavior of $D(\lambda)$ as $\lambda$ tends to $ \infty.$ This considerably improves the result of Damanik and Gorodetski (Comm. Math. Phys. 337, 2015). We also show that for any $(\alpha,\lambda)\in \check \II\times [24,\infty)$, the density of states measure of $H_{\alpha,\lambda,\theta}$ is exact-dimensional; its Hausdorff and packing dimensions coincide and are independent of $\alpha$. Denote the common value by $d(\lambda)$, we show that $d(\lambda)$ satisfies a Young type formula, and is Lipschitz. We obtain the exact asymptotic behavior of $d(\lambda)$ as $\lambda$ tends to $ \infty.$ During the course of study, we also answer several questions in the same paper of Damanik and Gorodetski.

Abstract:We study the spectral properties of the Sturm Hamiltolian of eventually constant type, which includes the Fibonacci Hamiltonian. Let s be the Hausdorff dimension of the spectrum. For V > 20, we show that the restriction of the s -dimensional Hausdorff measure to the spectrum is a Gibbs type measure; the density of states measure is a Markov measure. Based on the fine structures of these measures, we show that both measures are exact dimensional; we obtain exact asymptotic behaviors for the optimal Hölder exponent and the Hausdorff dimension of the density of states measure and for the Hausdorff dimension of the spectrum. As a consequence, if the frequency is not silver number type, then for V big enough, we establish strict inequalities between these three spectral characteristics. We achieve them by introducing an auxiliary symbolic dynamical system and applying the thermodynamical and multifractal formalisms of almost additive potentials.

Abstract:On a one-dimensional lattice without uniform interval, the Hermitian conjugation of a q-differential operator is discussed. Then a deformation of quantum mechanics in one dimension is presented. As an application, the harmonic oscillator is discussed. The energy spectrum and the eigenfunctions are shown to depend on an arbitrary deformation function. The deformed coherent states are also discussed. It is found that the completeness relation of coherent states holds for the case of q-coherent states, i.e. the deformation of the Heisenberg-Weyl algebra is a q-analogue Hopf algebra.

Abstract:We study the anisotropic effect of the Coulomb interaction on a 1/3-filling fractional quantum Hall system by using an exact diagonalization method on small systems in torus geometry. For weak anisotropy the system remains to be an incompressible quantum liquid, although anisotropy manifests itself in density correlation functions and excitation spectra. When the strength of anisotropy increases, we find the system develops a Hall-smectic-like phase with a one-dimensional charge density wave order and is unstable towards the one-dimensional crystal in the strong anisotropy limit. In all three phases of the Laughlin liquid, Hall-smectic-like, and crystal phases the ground state of the anisotropic Coulomb system can be well described by a family of model wave functions generated by an anisotropic projection Hamiltonian. We discuss the relevance of the results to the geometrical description of fractional quantum Hall states proposed by Haldane [Phys. Rev. Lett. 107, 116801 (2011)].

Abstract:We consider discrete Schr\"odinger operators with Sturmian potentials and study the transport exponents associated with them. Under suitable assumptions on the frequency, we establish upper and lower bounds for the upper transport exponents. As an application of these bounds, we identify the large coupling asymptotics of the upper transport exponents for frequencies of constant type. We also bound the large coupling asymptotics uniformly from above for Lebesgue-typical frequency. A particular consequence of these results is that for most frequencies of constant type, transport is faster than for Lebesgue almost every frequency. We also show quasi-ballistic transport for all coupling constants, generic frequencies, and suitable phases.

Abstract:Model quantum Hall states including Laughlin, Moore-Read, and Read-Rezayi states are generalized into appropriate anisotropic form. The generalized states are exact zero-energy eigenstates of corresponding anisotropic two- or multibody Hamiltonians, and explicitly illustrate the existence of geometric degree of freedom in the fractional quantum Hall effect. These generalized model quantum Hall states can provide a good description of the quantum Hall system with anisotropic interactions. Some numeric results of these anisotropic quantum Hall states are also presented.

Abstract:We study the energy spectrum of tight-binding Hamiltonian for regular hyperbolic tilings. More specifically, we compute the density of states using the continued-fraction expansion of the Green function on finite-size systems with more than $10^9$ sites and open boundary conditions. The coefficients of this expansion are found to quickly converge so that the thermodynamical limit can be inferred quite accurately. This density of states is in stark contrast with the prediction stemming from the recently proposed hyperbolic band theory. Thus, we conclude that the fraction of the energy spectrum described by the hyperbolic Bloch-like wave eigenfunctions vanishes in the thermodynamical limit.

Abstract:Let α∈(0,1) be irrational and [0;a1,a2,…] be the continued fraction expansion of α. Let Hα,V be the Sturm Hamiltonian with frequency α and coupling V, Σα,V be the spectrum of Hα,V. The fractal dimensions of the spectrum have been determined by Fan, Liu and Wen (2011) [8] when {an}n⩾1 is bounded. The present paper will treat the most difficult case, i.e., {an}n⩾1 is unbounded. We prove that for V⩾24,dimHΣα,V=s⁎(V)anddim¯BΣα,V=s⁎(V), where s⁎(V) and s⁎(V) are lower and upper pre-dimensions respectively. By this result, we determine the fractal dimensions of the spectrums for all Sturm Hamiltonians.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the multidimensional lattice Schrödinger operators with C^2 -cosine like quasi-periodic (QP) potential. We establish quantitative Green’s function estimates, the arithmetic version of Anderson (and dynamical) localization, and the finite volume version of (1/2-) -Hölder continuity of the integrated density of states for such QP Schrödinger operators. Our proof is based on an extension of the fundamental multi-scale analysis type method of Fröhlich–Spencer–Wittwer (Commun Math Phys 132(1), 5–25, 1990) to the higher lattice dimensions. We resolve the level crossing issue on eigenvalues parameterizations in the case of both higher lattice dimension and C^2 regular potential.

Abstract:Exact matrix product state representations for a type of scale-invariant states are presented, which describe highly degenerate ground states arising from spontaneous symmetry breaking with type-B Goldstone modes in one-dimensional quantum many-body systems. As a possible application, such a representation offers a convenient but powerful means for evaluating the norms of highly degenerate ground states. This in turn allows us to perform a universal finite system-size scaling analysis of the entanglement entropy. Moreover, this approach vividly explains why the entanglement entropy does not depend on what types of the boundary conditions are adopted, either periodic boundary conditions or open boundary conditions. Illustrative examples include the ${\rm SU}(2)$ spin-$s$ Heisenberg ferromagnetic model, the ${\rm SU}(2s+1)$ ferromagnetic model, and the staggered ${\rm SU}(3)$ spin-1 ferromagnetic biquadratic model.

Abstract:We study finite-dimensional open quantum systems whose density matrix evolves via a Lindbladian, $\dot{\rho}=-i[H,\rho]+{\mathcal D}\rho$. Here $H$ is the Hamiltonian of the isolated system and ${\mathcal D}$ is the dissipator. We consider the case where the system consists of two parts, the "boundary'' $A$ and the ``bulk'' $B$, and ${\mathcal D}$ acts only on $A$, so ${\mathcal D}={\mathcal D}_A\otimes{\mathcal I}_B$, where ${\mathcal D}_A$ acts only on part $A$, while ${\mathcal I}_B$ is the identity superoperator on part $B$. Let ${\mathcal D}_A$ be ergodic, so ${\mathcal D}_A\hat{\rho}_A=0$ only for one unique density matrix $\hat{\rho}_A$. We show that any stationary density matrix $\bar{\rho}$ on the full system which commutes with $H$ must be of the product form $\bar{\rho}=\hat{\rho}_A\otimes\rho_B$ for some $\rho_B$. This rules out finding any ${\mathcal D}_A$ that has the Gibbs measure $\rho_\beta\sim e^{-\beta H}$ as a stationary state with $\beta\neq 0$, unless there is no interaction between parts $A$ and $B$. We give criteria for the uniqueness of the stationary state $\bar{\rho}$ for systems with interactions between $A$ and $B$. Related results for non-ergodic cases are also discussed.

Singular Density of States Measure for Subshift and Quasi-Periodic Schrödinger Operators

Abstract:Simon's subshift conjecture states that for every aperiodic minimal subshift of Verblunsky coefficients, the common essential support of the associated measures has zero Lebesgue measure. We disprove this conjecture in this paper, both in the form stated and in the analogous formulation of it for discrete Schrödinger operators. In addition we prove a weak version of the conjecture in the Schrödinger setting. Namely, under some additional assumptions on the subshift, we show that the density of states measure, a natural measure associated with the operator family and whose topological support is equal to the spectrum, is singular. We also consider one-frequency quasi-periodic Schrödinger operators with continuous sampling functions and show that generically, the density of states measure is singular as well.

Abstract:We consider the Fibonacci Hamiltonian, the central model in the study of electronic properties of one-dimensional quasicrystals, and provide a detailed description of its spectrum and spectral characteristics (namely, the optimal Hölder exponent of the integrated density of states, the dimension of the density of states measure, the dimension of the spectrum, and the upper transport exponent) for all values of the coupling constant (in contrast to all previous quantitative results, which could be established only in the regime of small or large coupling). In particular, we show that the spectrum of this operator is a dynamically defined Cantor set and that the density of states measure is exact-dimensional; this implies that all standard fractal dimensions coincide in each case. We show that all the gaps of the spectrum allowed by the gap labeling theorem are open for all values of the coupling constant. Also, we establish strict inequalities between the four spectral characteristics in question, and provide the exact large coupling asymptotics of the dimension of the density of states measure (for the other three quantities, the large coupling asymptotics were known before). A crucial ingredient of the paper is the relation between spectral properties of the Fibonacci Hamiltonian and dynamical properties of the Fibonacci trace map (such as dimensional characteristics of the non-wandering hyperbolic set and its measure of maximal entropy as well as other equilibrium measures, topological entropy, multipliers of periodic orbits). We establish exact identities relating the spectral and dynamical quantities, and show the connection between the spectral quantities and the thermodynamic pressure function.

Abstract:We give response to the question: in infinite dimension states,given a state with energy bounded by E, we can write the state as a countable convex combination of pure states with energy bounded by E. We review the Alicki-Fannes-Winter technique to obtain a uniform continuity bound for the von Neumann entropy in states that are a mix of pure states with bounded energy, using this bound we conclude that for a Hamiltonian satisfying the Gibb's hypothesis such states cannot exist.

This allows us to describe the holomorphic automorphism group of these complex affine manifolds. These generalized Calogero--Moser spaces can also be understood as quiver varieties corresponding to moduli spaces of $\mathrm{SU}(2)$ instantons on a non-commutative $\mathbb{R}^4$.
