Abstract:To enhance the photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting performance of TaON photoanodes, we grow [100]‐oriented TaON films by nitridating the (012) surface of single crystal LiTaO3 under NH3/CCl4 mixed gas. The endotaxial growth of [100]‐oriented TaON from the (012) surface of LiTaO3 produces TaON nanoporous films that can be completely exfoliated from the LiTaO3 substrate. The exfoliated film consists of interconnected worm‐like TaON nanoparticles aligned along the [100] direction perpendicular to the film surface across the film thickness. This oriented TaON porous nanostructure facilitates the transfer of photogenerated electrons across the film, hence enhancing the separation of photogenerated electron–hole pairs on the film surface. As a result, the TaON photoanode fabricated by the annealed oriented TaON films exhibits excellent PEC performances with a photocurrent of 5.32 mA cm−2 at 1.23 V versus RHE under AM 1.5 G simulated solar irradiation. This value is one of the highest photocurrents among the TaON photoanodes reported so far. Our work provides a new method to fabricate highly oriented crystalline films through an endotaxial growth process from single crystalline substrates. This method can be used to fabricate highly efficient photoelectrodes for PEC water splitting, and is expected to be useful in many other fields.

Abstract:In this work, a solution combustion followed by dissolution in hydrogen peroxide is adopted to achieve a precursor for decorating anatase TiO2 nanosheets along single-crystalline rutile TiO2 nanorods, which achieves balsam-pear-like core/shell nanorod arrays with enhanced photoelectrochemical water splitting. The enhanced photoelectrochemical performance is attributed to the novel nanoarchitecture, which can simultaneously offer a high surface area, enhanced light-harvesting, a rutile/anatase junction for charge carrier separation and a conductive pathway for charge carrier collection. The photoanode design can also give hints to other functional materials.

Abstract:Strain engineering is a highly effective tool for tuning the lattice parameter and in turn optimizing the optical, electronic, and chemical properties of numerous functional materials. In conventional methods, the strain is imposed from an additional heterogeneous substrate, bringing extra composition/ phase that disturbs the mechanism investigations of the effects of lattice parameters on material properties. Here, we report a convertible-precursor-induced growing method to fulfill the elongation of the uniaxial lattice parameter of anatase TiO2 with a complex structure of single-crystal-like hierarchical arrays, without changing the composition, morphology, phase, and surface states. This methodology relies on a precursor-induced oriented growth and lattice parameter modulation on the basis of the lattice mismatch from the precursor. Unlike conventional substrate-manipulating methods, the employed precursor can be converted to the final materials (i.e., anatase TiO2), which can eliminate the effects of the additional substrate. It is found that for anatase TiO2, the elongation of lattice parameter a leads to the shift-up of the conduction band bottom and can thus accelerate the reduction reactions of O-2. The elongation of lattice parameter a and unique structural features make the TiO2 arrays highly active for photocatalytic degradation of toluene in air, with a turnover frequency (TOF) 3.8 times and 2.1 times, respectively, that of the normal TiO2 arrays and P25 powder under ultraviolet irradiation. The enhanced reduction capability is further confirmed by the much-improved efficiency to assist the photoreduction of Cr(VI) in water.
Oriented-growth Ta3N5/SrTaO2N Array Heterojunction with Extended Depletion Region for Improved Water Oxidation

Abstract:Depletion region at solid-solid or solid-liquid interface is mainly responsible for separating charge. Extending depletion region is an effective strategy to promote charge separation, and thus improving photoelectrochemical (PEC) performance. Herein, we designed an array heterojunction photoanode consisting of a-axis oriented-growth Ta3N5 nanorod arrays coated by SrTaO2N shell. This array heterojunction with a contiguous Ta3N5/SrTaO2N solid-solid and SrTaO2N/electrolyte solid-liquid junctions maximizes the charge separation and light absorption in depletion layer, shortens the hole diffusion distance to electrolyte, and effectively transfers electrons along the a-axis (light electron effective mass) of Ta3N5 to conductive substrate. As a result, compared with Ta3N5, Ta3N5/SrTaO2N array heterojunction exhibits more excellent PEC performance. Our results demonstrated a potential crystal oriented growth strategy of nanostructured heterojunctions with extended depletion region for promoting charge separation and overcoming the short carrier diffusion distance.
Vertically nanotwinned TiO2 photoanodes with enhanced charge transport for efficient solar water splitting

Abstract:<p>Nanotwinned crystals are highly desired for materials science and practical applications due to their various intriguing properties. In particular, a semiconducting photoanode with vertically aligned twin boundaries could simultaneously possess excellent charge separation and transport properties, but the synthesis remains a great challenge. Here, we report highly oriented rutile TiO<sub>2</sub> nanotwin crystals grown on conducting substrates via a rapid hydrothermal method for the first time. The scanning synchrotron X-ray Laue nanodiffraction demonstrated that the twin boundaries in the film are strikingly perpendicular to the plane of the substrate. The nanotwin photoanode exhibited superior photoelectrochemical water oxidation activity mainly due to the massive improvement in the electrical transport. This work offers exciting opportunities for designing and fabricating new classes of ordered nanotwins.</p>

Single-crystal TiO 2 /srtio 3 Core–shell Heterostructured Nanowire Arrays for Enhanced Photoelectrochemical Performance

Abstract:Vertically aligned TiO2/SrTiO3 core–shell heterostructured nanowire arrays with different shell thicknesses (5–40 nm) were fabricated on fluorine-doped tin oxide substrate via a hydrothermal process. Microstructural characterization demonstrated that the TiO2 nanowires were uniformly coated by the single-crystal SrTiO3 shell, where continuous and large-area interface could be clearly observed. By this means, significantly enhanced photoelectrochemical water splitting properties (0.78 mA·cm−2 at 1.23 V vs. RHE) were successfully realized in well-designed sample (with a shell thickness of 5–10 nm) compared with those of pristine TiO2 (0.38 mA·cm−2 at 1.23 V vs. RHE). The improvement of photoelectrochemical properties was attributed to the improved charge injection and charge separation, which are calculated by the results of water oxidation and sulfite oxidation measurements. Based on these results, a mechanism was proposed that SrTiO3 shell acted as an electron–hole separation layer to improve the photocurrent density. On the other hand, the sample with an over-thick SrTiO3 shell (20–40 nm) exhibited slightly reduced photoelectrochemical properties (0.66 mA·cm−2), which could be explained by the increase of the recombination rate in the thicker SrTiO3 shell. This work provided a facile strategy to improve and modulate the photoelectrochemical performance of heterostructured photoanodes.
Surface Energy-Driven Solution Epitaxial Growth of Anatase TiO2 Homostructures for Overall Water Splitting

Abstract:Titanium dioxide (TiO2) has been extensively investigated as a photocatalyst for water splitting to produce H-2. However, an overall water splitting by using anatase TiO2 is extremely difficult due to the short lifetime of holes. In this work, we propose that a surface energy decrease from {001} to {101} of anatase TiO2 is able to drive an epitaxial growth. A novel anatase TiO2 homostructure has been successfully synthesized via a facile hydrothermal route, where {101} semi-pyramid nanoparticles epitaxially grew on the both sides of the {001} nanosheets. The epitaxial relationship between the nanoparticles and the nanosheets has been characterized to be {001}/1{001} of anatase TiO2. For the first time, it is interesting to find that the homostructure with 12 wt% of {101} semi-pyramid can significantly improve the H-2 evolution rate by nearly 5 times compared to the pure nanosheets under the ultraviolet irradiation. More importantly, such homostructure enables 10.78 mu mol g(-1) h(-1) of O-2 production whereas the pure nanosheets cannot evolve detectable O-2 gas. Meanwhile, the time-resolved photoluminescence analysis indicates that the mean lifetime of the holes is increased from 2.20 ns of the nanosheets to 3.59 ns of the homostructure, accounting for the observed overall water splitting. The findings suggest that constructing a homostructure by a surface energy strategy could be promising towards overall water splitting, which may be applicable to other photocatalytic materials. Tailoring Electronic Structure of Stretchable Freestanding Single-Crystal LaNiO3 Thin Film for Enhanced Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Abstract:The comprehension of the electronic structure of an electrochemical catalyst, as a fundamental core content, has significantly accelerated advancements in competitive catalyst engineering since the adsorption and desorption abilities of an electrode are governed by its surface energy profile. However, achieving precise control over the electronic structure poses a significant challenge. Nanoporous materials, high-entropy systems, and layered double hydroxides frequently induce stoichiometric changes, leading to complexity such as electronic reconstruction, energy degeneracy disruption, and impurity energy levels. Here, we have successfully developed a stretchable freestanding single-crystal LaNiO3 thin film electrocatalyst enabling the accurate manipulation of the electronic structure on a large scale. Different from the rigid epitaxial heterostructure catalyst, we observed that with every 1 % increase in strain, the OER current of freestanding LaNiO3 is enhanced by ∼238 % compared to the pristine state. This is attributed to the dx2-y2 orbital occupation increasing by ∼7 %, and the eg-center decreasing by ∼0.05 eV, resulting in a weakened Ni-O adsorption.
Improving Solar Water-Splitting Performance of LaTaON2 by Bulk Defect Control and Interface Engineering

Abstract:Particle-assembled photoanode films for solar water splitting are often subjected to serious electron-hole recombination, thus exhibiting low solar-to-hydrogen efficiency. The construction of efficient particle-assembled photoanode remains a challenge. Here, taking LaTaON2 particle-assembled photoanode as a model, bulk defect control and interface engineering were introduced to reduce the electron-hole recombination. As a result, the solar photocurrent of LaTaON2 achieves 2.1 mA cm(-2) at 1.6 V-RHE after the modification of CoOx, an order of magnitude greater than the previously-reported value of 0.15 mA cm(-2). This dramatic enhancement is mainly ascribed to increased bulk electrical conductivity, and less back reactions on the conductive substrates, as well as facilitated hole transfer to reaction sites. This study may provide guidelines for the construction of highly efficient particle-assembled photoanode films.
Molten Salt-Assisted A-Axis-oriented Growth of Ta3N5 Nanorod Arrays with Enhanced Charge Transport for Efficient Photoelectrochemical Water Oxidation

Abstract:Efficiently harvesting light and transporting charges are the main challenges for solar water oxidation by Ta3N5 photoanodes. Herein, we discovered a facile KI molten salt route to fabricate highly oriented Ta3N5 nanorod arrays along the [100] crystallographic direction. The size of the nanorods can be finely tuned by controlling the amount of KI flux due to their bottom-up growth mechanism. The array structure enhances the light scattering, which is beneficial for harvesting more light to make up for the light absorption anisotropy of Ta3N5. The preferred [100] growth orientation guarantees electron migration to the substrate, and the enlarged space charge layer facilitates hole migration to the semiconductor-liquid interface. As a result, under AM 1.5 irradiation, the onset potential of the Ta3N5 nanorod array photoanode reaches 0.65 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode, and the current density reaches 4.65 mA cm(-2). The design concept that rationally combines the advantages of charge transport and light utilization may offer a new strategy for efficient solar energy conversion.

Abstract:Large-scale single crystals have potential applications in many fields, such as in ferroelectric and photoelectric energy conversion devices. Perovskite oxynitrides have also attracted attention in photoelectrochemical water splitting systems because of their high theoretical solar-to-hydrogen efficiencies. Nevertheless, the synthesis of perovskite oxynitride single crystals requires the coupling of cation exchange and ammonization processes, which is exceptionally challenging. The present study demonstrates an inorganic vapor method that provides, for the first time ever, high-quality epitaxial perovskite SrTaO2N single crystals on the centimeter scale. Assessments using Raman spectroscopy, crystal structure analysis and density functional theory determined that the conversion mechanism followed a topotactic transition mode. Compared with conventional SrTaO2N particle-assembled films, the SrTaO2N single crystals made in this work were free of interparticle interfaces and grain boundaries, which exhibited extremely high performance during photoelectrochemical water oxidation. In particular, these SrTaO2N single crystals showed the highest photocurrent density at 0.6 V vs. RHE (1.20 mA cm−2) and the highest photocurrent filling factor (47.6%) reported to date, together with a low onset potential (0.35 V vs. RHE). This onset potential was 200 mV less than that of the reported in situ SrTaO2N film, and the photocurrent fill factor was improved by 2 to 3 times.

Abstract:Abstract The rational design of nanomaterials with distinct exposed facets is of great importance for improving the physicochemical properties of these materials and for the study of structure–activity relationships. This work describes the first synthesis of lanthanum titanate (La 2 Ti 2 O 7 , LTO) with dandelion-like nanostructures via the molten salt method. The lowest synthesis temperature of 700 °C is at least 200 °C lower than that required by other methods. The dandelion structure consists of well-crystallized LTO nanorods (NRs) with sizes of less than 100 nm in the radial direction and 300–500 nm in the axial direction, which is different from the widely accepted two-dimensional form. LaOCl microplates were formed as an intermediate substrate for LTO NR growth outwards to the basal surfaces of the LaOCl crystallites. DFT calculation results showed that the strong LiCl adsorption on the (100) surface led to distinct growth of the (100) and (020) planes, thus promoting the rod-like growth of LTO along the [010] axis. In addition, the photocatalytic performance of as-prepared LTO was evaluated by determining the degradation of rhodamine B. The results suggested that the as-prepared LTO could markedly enhance the photocatalytic activity as a result of the surface heterojunction of coexposed {100} and {002} facets in LTO NRs.

Abstract:Developing photoanodes that can split water with low (or even without) externally applied bias is a critical challenge for achieving efficient solar-driven photoelectrochemical water oxidation. Here, we proposed a flux-assisted oriented crystal growth route to minimize the drawbacks of Ta3N5 photoanode, including the following: (1) Crystallographic-oriented growth minimizes the negative effect of electronic structure anisotropy of the Ta3N5, facilitating the directional fast charge transfer in having lighter carrier effective mass of (b,c)-axes directions. (2) Reducing crystal defects suppressed surface recombination of carriers and released the surface Fermi level pinning effect. (3) Increment of oxygen-impurity electron donor by Sc doping improved the electrical conductivity, promoting the bulk charge separation and transfer. Specifically, the onset potential of Ta3N5 photoanode was dramatically negatively shifted to 0.4 V-RHE and thereby afforded a 0.82% half-cell solar-to-hydrogen efficiency.

Abstract:Oriented attachment, as aggregation based crystallization, is one of the most promising approaches in designing novel nanostructures. A two-step solvothermal method is reported in this work to synthesize TiO2 nanochains with one-dimensional single-crystalline nature, which is formed by oriented attachment and with tunable length. We achieved selectively reducing the stereo-hindrance effect at (001) surfaces and making the processes of Ostwald ripening and oriented attachment asynchronous. By virtue of the 1D single crystalline nature, the conversion efficiency of dye-sensitized solar cell was improved. This approach opens the door for controllable oriented attachment, and it is meaningful for designing novel nanoarchitectures.

Abstract:Solar-powered one-step-excitation overall water splitting (OWS) using semiconducting materials is a simple means of achieving scalable and sustainable hydrogen production. While tantalum oxynitride (TaON) is one of the few photocatalysts capable of promoting OWS via single-step visible light excitation, the efficiency of this process remains extremely poor. The present work employed 15 nm amorphous Ta 2 O 5 •3.3H 2 O nanoparticles as a new precursor together with Zr doping and an optimized nitridation duration to synthesize a TaON-based photocatalyst with reduced particle sizes and low defect densities. Upon loading with Ru/Cr 2 O 3 /IrO 2 cocatalysts, this material exhibited stoichiometric water splitting into hydrogen and oxygen, with an order of magnitude improvement in efficiency. Our findings demonstrate the importance of inventing/selecting the appropriate synthetic precursor and of defect control for fabricating active OWS photocatalysts.

Abstract:Oriented attachment (OA) growth has shown great significance in the development of crystal growth theory over the past decade, which is generally acknowledged as a physical process. Here, we report a different OA growth manner, which involves not only the physical nanoparticle attachment but also the chemical reaction between nanoparticles and ions. It is demonstrated that with the participation of NaHCO3 and NH4HCO3, micron-sized sheets of NaY(CO3)(2)center dot 6H(2)O and (NH4)Y(CO3)(2)center dot H2O can be formed from Y-2(CO3)(3)center dot 2H(2)O nanoparticles through a chemical-reaction-directed OA. In contrast to the conventional OA process, this OA growth can produce single-crystalline substances whose crystallographic structures and chemical constituents are different (usually more complicated) from those of precursor nanoparticles. Such an OA mechanism shows applicability in a number of salts. Our findings not only extend the territory of the non-classical aggregation-based crystal growth mode but also provide a feasible approach for creating functional materials with complex architectures.
Low Onset Potential on Single Crystal Ta3N5 Polyhedron Array Photoanode with Preferential Exposure of {001} Facets

Abstract:The photoelectrochemical performance of photoanode depends significantly on the surface properties. Enormous efforts have been spent on fabricating photoanode with exposure of high-activity facets. However, precise control of the Ta3N5 facet exposure is still highly challenging, due to its harsh fabrication condition. In this study, it was found that Ta3N5 polyhedron can be grew through a bottom-up growth process in molten salt. Molten salt media in a semi-closed reactor provides a steady growth environment so that the Ta3N5 growth units are able to assemble in thermodynamically and kinetically favorable way. The preferential exposed facets are determined to be {001} facets. Due to the stronger built-in electric field on {001} facets and the small effective mass of hole along the [001] axis, an onset potential of 0.6 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) and a photocurrent of 5.6 mA cm(-2) at 1.23 versus RHE have been achieved. Our findings may open an avenue to grow the nitride or oxynitride semiconductor crystals with desired structures for achieving efficient solar energy conversion and storage.
Photoelectrochemical Water Oxidation of LaTaON2 under Visible-Light Irradiation

Abstract:Lanthanum tantalum oxynitride (LaTaON2) powders were prepared by one-step flux method. LaTaON2 photoanodes, which are fabricated by using LaTaON2 powders, are found to exhibit photoelectrochemical activity for overall water splitting. The photocurrent for LaTaON2 photoelectrodes was ca. 120 mu A cm(-2) at 1.5 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) in 1 M NaOH aqueous solutions (pH = 13.6) under AM 1.5 G simulated sunlight irradiation (100 mW cm(-2)). The photocurrent of LaTaON2 photoelectrode from back-side illumination is much larger than that from front-side illumination, suggesting that the photoelectrochemical property is mainly limited by poor continuous electron transport in the bulk. Further efforts to ameliorate the electron transport in the bulk of LaTaON2 photoelectrodes are expected to significantly improve their photoelectrochemical performance. Photocatalytic Activities for Water Splitting of La-doped-NaTaO3 Fabricated by Microwave Synthesis

Abstract:The microwave synthesis was used to fabricate the La0.02Na0.98TaO3 photocalyst. Using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM), we have investigated phase formation and crystal morphology of La0.02Na0.98TaO3 powders prepared by microwave heating. The grains with an average size of 63nm were easily obtained due to the fast reaction under microwave irradiation. The as-prepared La0.02Na0.98TaO3 powders have high photocatalytic activities for water splitting owing to good crystallinity and high surface area compared to traditional La0.02Na0.98TaO3 powders.

Abstract:The LaTiO2N mesoporous single crystals prepared using NaLaTiO4 have the characteristics of high crystallinity, high porosity, absence of grain boundaries, and exposure of (010) and (101) crystal facets. These peculiar microstructures unleash photocarrier transport and deliver high photocatalytic activity for water‐splitting half‐reactions and overall water‐splitting. LaTiO2N is a promising narrow‐bandgap semiconductor photocatalyst that shows great promise for water redox reactions. However, its performance is often hindered by fast photocarrier recombination events. Herein, LaTiO2N mesoporous single crystals (MSCs) are successfully fabricated via a topotactic conversion route by using the Ruddlesden–Popper compound NaLaTiO4 as the precursor. The LaTiO2N MSCs are characterized by high crystallinity, abundant mesopores, no grain boundaries (GBs), and exposure of (010) and (101) crystal facets. A facet‐assisted photocarrier separation mechanism is identified for these LaTiO2N MSCs which contributes to the much better photocarrier separation than conventional counterparts. By loading proper cocatalysts, LaTiO2N MSCs serve as an efficient photocatalyst for water‐splitting half‐reactions and are capable of photocatalyzing overall water‐splitting reactions, delivering an impressive apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) as high as 65.07% at 420 ± 20 nm for O2‐evolution and a solar‐to‐hydrogen (STH) efficiency as high as 0.012% for solar‐driven overall water splitting. These findings not only highlight the grain‐boundary‐free MSCs with peculiar crystal‐facet exposure as highly active photocatalysts for particulate photocatalysis but also provide a rational design approach for developing efficient photocatalysts.
