Abstract:Based on a multimode interference (MMI) coupler in slot waveguide structures, an ultracompact wavelength demultiplexer operating at 1.30 and 1.55mum wavelengths is proposed and designed by using a full-vector mapped Galerkin mode solver and a modified three-dimensional full-vector beam propagation method. The tapered waveguide structures are applied to connect the input/output channels and the MMI section for reducing excess loss. The modal characteristics of the slot waveguides are analyzed and the evolution of the injected field in whole device are demonstrated. The results show that a MMI section of 119.8mum in length, which is only 27.5% length of that of the MMI coupler by using conventional rib waveguides, is achieved with the contrasts of 26.03 and 28.14dB at wavelengths 1.30 and 1.55mum, respectively, and the insertion losses are below 0.2dB at both wavelengths.

Abstract:With the assistance of subwavelength grating (SWG), an ultra-compact multimode interference (MMI)-based diplexer is proposed. A certain number of SWG pitches are implemented in the middle of the MMI section, which can engineer the effective refractive index for the modes and, therefore, tune the beat length. With proper tailoring of the grating parameters, the beat lengths of the two wavelengths can be reduced as well as the device length, which has to match several odd or even times of beat lengths of both wavelengths. As a result, the proposed wavelength diplexer is 43.4 mu m in length, which is only similar to 30% of its conventional counterpart. It also displays a wide 1-dB bandwidth of similar to 150 nm around the wavelength of 1310 and similar to 120 nm around the wavelength of 1550 nm. The insertion losses are less than 0.1 dB for the two operating wavelengths while the extinction ratios are both better than 20 dB.

Abstract:We propose a nonreciprocal optical add-drop multiplexer with silicon waveguide, which is realized by grating assisted coupler employing magneto-optical nonceciprocal phase shift. This device can achieve different adding or dropping peak wavelengths when light is launched in the forward-directed and backward-directed propagation. The calculation results show that the shift of the different dropping peak wavelengths is up to 0.7nm. Also, we demonstrate its applications for narrowband optical isolators and circulators. This work demonstrates that on-chip nonreciprocal optical add-drop multiplexers and optical isolations can be implemented with the proposed device, which has promising applications for optical communication systems and photonic integrated devices.

Abstract:Asymmetrical directional couplers aided with subwavelength sidewall corrugations are used to realize ultra-compact silicon mode (de)multiplexers at C-band. Three mode (de)multiplexers with ultra-short coupling lengths of 5.6/6.5/7.7 μm are designed to enable low-loss mode conversions between TE0 and TE1/2/3 modes. They are then cascaded to build a four-channel mode-division-multiplexing (MDM) link. The four mode channels present minimal on-chip insertion losses of 0.2/0.7/0.7/0.9 dB at their peak wavelengths. Measured cross talk levels of the four mode channels are better than -18.0/-19.1/-16.0/-18.2 dB within the wavelength range from 1530 nm to 1580 nm.

Abstract:Based on the overlapping-imaging characteristics of the multimode interference (MMI) and the method of area modulation, this paper presents several compact waveguide devices of MMI structure, such as variable optical attenuator, splitter and spatial optic logic coder. A full shuffle 1 × 3 switch and a three-channel wavelength 3 × 3 router switch with only one compound modulation region are proposed and analyzed. The characteristics of the switch devices have been demonstrated by 2-D BPM simulation. The simulation extinction ratio is higher than 30 dB for 1545, 1550 and 1555 wavelength.

Abstract:The fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) systems are growing fast these days, where two different wavelengths are used for upstream and downstream traffic, typically 1310nm and 1490nm. The duplexers are the key elements to separate these wavelengths into different path in central offices (CO) and optical network unit (ONU) in passive optical network (PON). Multimode interference (MMI) has some benefits to be a duplexer including large fabrication tolerance, low-temperature dependence, and low-polarization dependence, but its size is too large to integrate in conventional case. Based on the silicon photonics platform, ultra-short silicon MMI duplexer was demonstrated to separate the 1310nm and 1490nm lights. By studying the theory of self-image phenomena in MMI, the first order images are adopted in order to keep the device short. A cascaded MMI structure was investigated to implement the wavelength splitting, where both the light of 1310nm and 1490nm was input from the same port, and the 1490nm light was coupling cross the first MMI and output at the cross-port in the device while the 1310nm light was coupling through the first and second MMI and output at the bar-port in the device. The experiment was carried on with the SOI wafer of 340nm top silicon. The cascaded MMI was investigated to fold the length of the duplexer as short as 117 mu m with the extinct ratio over 10dB.

Abstract:We propose an ultra-compact novel wavelength multiplexer employing a (N + 1) × (N + 1) arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) and a polarization-combiner-rotator (PCR) on the SOI platform, to realize a multiplexing for 2N wavelengths with a spacing of Δλ. The (N + 1) × (N + 1) AWG works at a bidirectional way to provide two groups of N × 1 wavelength multiplexing with each group having a channel spacing of 2×Δλ, and the central wavelengths of all input channels in one group have a wavelength shift of Δλ with respect to those in the other group. The double channel spacing results in a significant decrease on the footprint of the (N + 1) × (N + 1) AWG-based multiplexer compared with a conventional 2N × 1 AWG multiplexer with the same wavelength spacing Δλ. Due to the fact that a single mode fiber is insensitive to the polarization of input light, if we consider short reach datacom applications such as 100/400 GbE, the two separate multiplexing outputs of the (N + 1) × (N + 1) AWG can be combined as one output with one half wavelengths working at TE polarization and the other at TM polarization by employing a low loss and broadband PCR. In the experiment, we demonstrate a 16 × 200 GHz multiplexer based on a 9 × 9 AWG. The experimental results show that the on-chip loss of the fabricated multiplexer is 2.7 dB and the loss uniformity is 0.5 dB. The 1-dB and 3-dB bandwidths are >0.56 nm (i.e., 35% of the wavelength spacing) and >1.1 nm (i.e., 69% of the wavelength spacing), respectively. They can also be further increased by decreasing the gap between adjacent input waveguides at the interfaces of star couplers of the designed AWG without inducing an excess loss. The proposed multiplexer has great potential for application to future super large capacity (> Tb/s) data transmission systems.

Abstract:An ultra-compact multimode wavelength demultiplexer (MWD) with a footprint of 3.6 × 2.4 μm2 was designed. Its size is approximately two orders of magnitude smaller than the size of the traditional waveguide-based device. Moreover, the designed demultiplexer is multifunctional, and can realize wavelength demultiplexing and mode conversion at the same time. This MWD splits light at the wavelengths of 1450 nm and 1550 nm and simultaneously converts the input light from the fundamental transverse electric (TE0) mode to the first-order transverse electric (TE1) mode. The direct binary search (DBS) algorithm was employed to simulate the design. The results show that the insertion loss of the demultiplexer is −1.26 dB and −0.82 dB for the upper channel (wavelength 1450 nm) and lower channel (wavelength 1550 nm), while the crosstalk values are maintained as low as −18.10 dB and −23.35 dB, respectively. Additionally, a similar structure can be expanded to several modes. Based on these advantages, this multifunctional photonics device is expected to be used extensively in advanced photonic integration circuits.

Abstract:A compact wavelength-division (de)multiplexer is proposed and demonstrated experimentally to achieve doubled channel number and halved channel spacing by utilizing a bidirectional arrayed-waveguide grating integrated with an Mach-Zehnder interferometer optical interleaver. As an example, an 18-channel wavelength-division (de)multiplexer with a channel spacing of 200 GHz is designed and fabricated. The measured excess loss is about 8 dB and the channel crosstalk is -15 ~ -18 dB. The footprint of this fabricated (de)multiplexer is about 520 μm × 190 μm.

Abstract:We present detailed modeling and experimental results for an improved design of an InGaAsP/lnP wavelength demultiplexer based on a monolithically integrated Rowland circle grating. The design incorporated ten wavelength channels at 1.55 mu m with a uniform spacing of 2 nm. The total on-chip loss was about 10 dB and the crosstalk between adjacent channels was as low as -25 dB. It was shown that low-loss etched turning mirrors can reduce the total on-chip loss by about 4 dB compared to traditional 90 degrees curved multimode waveguides. By replacing standard hat grating facets with retro-reflecting V-shaped facets in the echelle grating, the loss was further reduced by 4 dB, Polarization independent operation within a passband of 0.5 nm was achieved by using multimode output waveguide, The potential sources producing the crosstalk have been analyzed and fabrication modifications for further improvement are suggested.

Abstract:An eight-channel 400 GHz-spacing planar waveguide multi/demultiplexer employing etched diffraction grating is designed and fabricated on a silicon-on-insulator platform with a 220 nm thick top layer. The design parameters are optimized by scalar diffraction simulation to obtain optimal performance with a small footprint of only 0.75 mm(2). A bi-level adiabatic taper is used to connect the input/output waveguide and the slab waveguide so as to reduce the insertion loss and the broadening of the diffraction angle of the propagating light. The device is fabricated in a two-step process with E-beam lithography and dry etching, and the alignment accuracy is 10 nm or even better. Measurements show that the insertion loss is 7.35 dB and the crosstalk between adjacent channels is about -15 dB. Ways to improve the performance are also investigated in detail.

Abstract:An ultra-compact broadband 2 x 2 3 dB power splitter is proposed and demonstrated by utilizing a subwavelength- grating (SWG)-assisted asymmetric directional coupler. In the present design, a subwavelength grating is inserted into the straight coupling region of an asymmetric directional coupler, so that the refractive index and the dispersion properties of this structure are engineered for achieving an ultra-broad bandwidth and an ultra-compact footprint. For the present power splitter with a straight coupling region as short as 5.25 mu m, the bandwidth is as large as 300 nm (1400 similar to 1700 nm) for achieving an imbalance of <0.4 dB and an excess loss of <0.33 dB for the fundamental transverse electrical (TE) mode. The fabricated splitter works well with an imbalance less than 0.5 dB and with an excess loss less than 1 dB in a broad wavelength-band from 1450 to 1650 nm.

Abstract:As an effective and feasible method, inverse design has been widely used in the design of silicon-based photonic devices. We propose a silicon-based wavelength diplexer in the form of a bullet-shaped structure using subwavelength grating (SWG) for 1.55 and 2 μm wavelengths based on the inverse design. Since the embedded SWG can significantly shorten the beat length corresponding to the two wavelengths, the device length can be shortened by adjusting the effective refractive index while maintaining the device with low insertion loss (IL) and high contrast (C). When the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm is used to optimize the relevant parameters of the wavelength diplexer, the optimal length of 12.6 μm is obtained. The results show that the IL and C of the wavelength diplexer successfully designed by PSO are 0.19/0.54 dB and 21.21/21.33 dB at 1.55/2 μm, respectively, and its bandwidth is greater than 118/85 nm when C > 15dB and IL < 1dB. The inverse design has been proved to be effective and can be extended to other device designs.

Abstract:Adiabatic waveguide taper and on-chip wavelength demultiplexer are the key components of photonic integrated circuits. However, these two kinds of devices which were designed by the traditional semi-analytic methods or the brute-force search methods usually have large size. Here, based on the regularized digital metamaterials, a two-channel focused wavelength demultiplexer with a footprint of 2.4 x 10 mu m(2) has been proposed. The designed demultiplexer can directly connect to a grating coupler under the absence of a long adiabatic waveguide taper. The objective first method and the modified steepest descent method are used to design the demultiplexer which splits 1520 nm and 1580 nm light. Experimental results show that the insertion loss of the upper (lower) channel of the demultiplexer is -1.77 dB (-2.10 dB) and the crosstalk is -25.17 dB (-12.14 dB). Besides, the simulation results indicate that the fabrication tolerance of the device can reach +/- 20 nm in etching depth and +/- 10 nm in plane size changing. Benefitted from the extensibility of the design method, other types of ultra-compact "focused" devices, like mode splitters, mode converters, and power splitters can also be designed. Most importantly, this design method can be used to design devices with more complicated functionalities, such as multi-channel focused wavelength demultiplexers.

Abstract:An ultrabroadband and fabrication-tolerant mode (de)multiplexer [(De)MUX] is proposed and optimized by inserting subwavelength gratings (SWGs) into a three-waveguide coupler (TWC). The coupling strength can be dramatically enhanced, benefitting from both the SWG and TWC structures. The proposed mode (De)MUX is optimized using a three-dimensional, full-vectorial finite difference time domain based band diagram and propagation analyses. The simulated results indicate that the optimal mode (De)MUX is with a compact coupling length of 14.75 mu m a low loss of 0.64 dB, and a low mode crosstalk of -31.7 dB at the operating wavelength of 1.55 mu m. With the mode crosstalk < -15.0 dB, an ultrabroad bandwidth of 312 nm and a relaxed fabrication tolerance of -42.7 nm to +36.5 nm can be achieved. The 3 dB bandwidth is over 320 nm and the insertion loss is less than 1.6 dB for a +/- 50 nm width change. (C) 2019 Optical Society of America

Abstract:An on-chip triplexer based on cascaded tilted multimode interference (MMI) couplers has been demonstrated to separate the 1310 nm wavelength band into one port and 1490 nm and 1550 nm wavelength bands into the other two ports respectively. By utilizing the dispersive self-imaging and pseudo self-imaging, the device length is not critically determined by the common multiple of beat lengths for different wavelengths. The total device size can be reduced to ∼450 μm, which is half of the butterfly structure reported. The whole device, fabricated with only one fully-etching step, is characterized with <−15 dB low crosstalk (CT) and ∼1 dB insertion loss (IL).

Abstract:On-chip optical dispersion compensation and wavelength division multiplexing/demultiplexing (WDM) are highly demanded functions for optical communications. In this work, we proposed a multichannel dispersion compensation structure based on chirped multimode grating within a counter-directional coupler (CMG-CDC). Simultaneous wavelength division multiplexing and demultiplexing can be realized within a compact footprint. A device design for four-channel CMG-CDC at the C/L (1530–1565 nm) band is presented with a channel spacing of 20 nm assisted by a grooved multimode waveguide structure. The average dispersion for all channels is about −2.25 ps/nm with a channel bandwidth of about 3.1 nm. The device is highly compact and highly scalable, which makes it rather convenient for increasing the group velocity dispersion (GVD) and channel number, indicating flexible applications for versatile systems, including typically coarse wavelength division multiplexer four-lane (CWDM4) transceivers.
