Abstract:This paper reports an ultra-miniaturized glucose sensor using ZnO nanorod-based field effect transistor (FET) to continuously monitor glucose concentration in real time. The FET sensor is fabricated via hydrothermal growth of semiconducting ZnO nanorods between source and drain microelectrodes with alternating current (AC) electric-field assistance. ZnO nanorod structured FET acts as a frequency mixer to transduce glucose concentration into a current change at certain frequencies, which is measured by a lock-in amplifier. In contrast to larger state-of-the-art sensors placed in subcutaneous layer, the possibility of reduction in sensor size is demonstrated to allow minimally invasive glucose monitoring in dermal interstitial fluid. Due to the large surface-to-volume ratio of ZnO nanorods and the advanced frequency mixing detection, a high sensitivity of 1.6 mA/ (μM-cm 2 ) with tiny sensing area of 180 μm 2 is achieved.
