Abstract:The metallic vapor density in vacuum arc in a vacuum interrupter is crucial for deeper understanding of the anodic activities and dielectric recovery process. In this work, the objective is to measure the Cr metallic vapor density and its axial distribution along the gap in the vacuum arc between chromium contacts. The method of the optical absorption spectroscopy (OAS) using a broadband light source is adopted. The result shows that when the vacuum arc operates in diffuse mode, the maxima of metallic vapor density distribution occurs in the vicinity of electrodes during arcing period, representing the cathodic vapor source and anodic vapor source. Following the decrease of arc current, the metallic vapor density decrease as well. At current zero, the metallic vapor has a nearly uniform distribution in the gap of about 3x10(17) m(-3).
