Abstract:This paper presents the design and simulation of a 64-element low-profile dual-polarized receive phased array antenna system with four independent reconfigurable beams for Ka-band low-earth-orbit satellite communication (SATCOM). Single-aperture-integrated multi-beam array systems induce great electrical, thermal, physical, and process challenges due to the extremely limited layout space requirements. To tackle the above problems, an 18-layer high-density hybrid laminated printed circuit board stack-up is utilized. A slot-fed dual-polarized patch antenna array with feed rotation is designed and simulated to guarantee polarization diversity within a simple geometry. Dedicated onboard multi-layer-embedded 4 × 16:1 Wilkinson combining networks are proposed and optimized to facilitate compact multi-beam forming. Simulated results show that the proposed array can synthesize four separate beams scanning up to ±50° in the azimuth plane with low loss and high isolation across 27.5−32 GHz. To our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of a planar phased array supporting four simultaneously reconfigurable beams for Ka-band SATCOM.
Two-dimensional Beam Scanner Based on Silicon Optical Phased Array with Half-Wavelength Period

Abstract:We demonstrate a 63-channel grating-lobe-free optical phased array, in which end-fire antennas were fabricated with a pitch of 775 nm to eliminate grating lobe. Phase mismatch was configured to suppress the optical crosstalk in the dense waveguides. Two-dimensional beam steering within 16°× 2.7° were presented by thermal phase shifting and wavelength tuning.

Abstract:We propose an on-chip Si photonics optical phased array based on a serial grating design which eliminates the use of directional couplers in previous designs. It significantly reduces overall phased array size especially when the number of the antenna is small which is often demanded in practice. The simulation results show our design reduces overall phased array size, increases optical power utilization while maintains comparable far field performance.

Abstract:We demonstrate a four-line selective optical phased array (FLS-OPA) with improved uniformity of radiated beam patterns. The FLS-OPA contains four basic OPA units, which are divided into two symmetric groups with the opposite incident directions of lights. In each group, the grating periods of the OPA units are set to 630 nm and 650 nm, respectively. Besides, a $1\times 4$ thermo-optical switch is used to select an OPA unit out of four as the beam emitting unit. Therefore, four different emitting angles in the vertical direction can be realized by only two grating periods with a fixed wavelength. By tuning the wavelength from 1530 nm to 1635 nm and switching the OPA units, the FLS-OPA achieves a scanning range of 34.2° in the vertical direction, and the corresponding tuning efficiency is 0.33°/nm. In addition, the beam steering range in the horizontal direction is 21.4°. Thus, the overall field of view is $21.4^{\circ } \times 34.2^{\circ }$ . Moreover, the symmetrical arrangement of the OPA units can improve the uniformity of the radiated beam patterns in the vertical direction.

Abstract:We demonstrate 32-channel dispersive optical phased arrays on a Si3N4-on-SOI integration platform. The phase difference is introduced by the arrayed waveguide. Beam steering in phased-array direction with an aliasing-free range of 22.4 degrees and free spectrum ranges of similar to 60 nm and similar to 6 nm is achieved. Meanwhile, the main lobe is deflected simultaneously by 19.67 degrees in the other direction by tuning the wavelength from 1500 nm to 1630 nm. Measurement results show that the dispersive optical phased array provides a compact, low-power and massively parallel solution for LiDAR applications.

Abstract:In practical applications, a highly flexible conformal phased array will experience inevitable deformations during severe weather conditions. This will distort radiating beams, especially beam directions. To overcome this technical challenge, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a self-adaptive phased array printed on a highly flexible, strongly deformable aperture. The unique novelty of this study is the use of a single six-axis inertial measurement unit (IMU) for each array element to measure the element positions in real time during deformations, and the derivation of a dedicated algorithm integrating accelerations, angular velocities, and phases of elements to compensate for the deterioration of radiating patterns due to deformations. Microwave vector multipliers (VMs) are further used to control the phases continuously. Finally, an experimental prototype operating in S-band is implemented, validating the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Abstract:We demonstrate a silicon $1 imes 64$ optical phased array by using carrier-depletion-based phase shifters. The 5-mm-long phase shifter exhibits an electro-optic bandwidth of 700 MHz, a modulation efficiency of 2.3 V.cm, and an ultra-low power consumption of < 0.45 nW/$oldsymbol {pi }$ . A steering range of ±18° is realized in the phased-array axis by tuning the phase of each antenna. Besides, the beam steering in the other (wavelength-controlled) axis by tuning the wavelength achieves a dispersion efficiency of 0.17° /nm. Although the carrier-depletion effect induces a nonuniform optical amplitude distribution among the antenna array, the OPA chip is still able to form high-quality far-field beam patterns with side lobe suppression ratios of $oldsymbol {sim }10$ dB. Our measurement and simulation results indicate that the carrier-depletion-based OPA is a promising candidate for future high-speed and power-efficient solid-state Lidars.

Abstract:In the need for a more compact and efficient optical phased array with a wide steering beam for LIDAR applications, a wide steering array with high resolution is desirable. However, in the published work, a trade-off is often made for one over another. Apodized grating antennas have shown good efficiency with a compact size and wide beam profile, which improve optical phased array beam steering capability and are also compatible with the CMOS silicon photonics process. A promising studies shows enhancement in steering range with good resolution utilizing a non-uniform optical phased array. In this work, we present two highly efficient optical antennas with 94% and 93.5% upward power at the center frequency for the first and second antenna respectively, exceeding state-of-the-artwork to the best of our knowledge, and wide full-width half maximum of 8.88° x 78.05° and 7.53° x 69.85° in elevation and azimuthal planes, respectively. Both antennas provide a broad bandwidth across the 1400-1700 nm wavelength range with more than 80% efficiency in the S, C, and L bands. To overcome the limited scan ranges and small aperture size, a two-dimensional non-uniform array of 10 × 10 elements is utilized to increase the beam steering capability. A genetic algorithm is used to optimize the position of array elements, resulting in an aliasing-free array with a wide steering range of 160° with beam width 0.5° and consistent -11 dB maximum side lobe level across the steering range.

Abstract:In this work, a fully integrated phased array using multi-layer printed circuit board (PCB) fabrication technologies is presented. This array is directly fed by 50 omega coaxial cables, without balanced-to-unbalanced transitions. An asymmetric dipole is used to achieve stable input impedance. Furthermore, to broaden the operating bandwidth, a coupling patch is designed beneath the asymmetric dipole , which also eliminates the common-mode resonance and decreases the array profile. In addition, three wide-angle impedance matching (WAIM) layers with different structures are utilised to improve the scan range in all scanning planes. Infinite array simulations indicate that the proposed array can operate over a 5.1:1 bandwidth (2.4 similar to 12.2 GHz) with an active voltage standing wave ratio below 3 while scanning up to +/- 60 degrees in H plane and +/- 75 degrees in the E plane. Furthermore, the proposed antenna, whose cross-polarization levels remain below -35 and -7.5 dB when scanning up to 75 degrees in the E plane and 60 degrees in the D plane, demonstrates the merits of high polarization purity. Array simulations are verified by the measurements of a 12 x 12 prototype, and good agreement is observed.

Abstract:Chip-scale optical phased arrays could enable compact beam steering and LIDAR for autonomous vehicles, precision robotics, and free-space optical communications. Because these applications demand wide angle beam steering as well as high optical power in the output beam, a natural design choice would be to space the array emitters at a half-wavelength pitch, as is common in radiofrequency phased arrays. Optical phased arrays, however, unlike RF phased arrays, have been limited by the tradeoff between field of view (i.e. angle steering) and beamforming efficiency (i.e. optical power in the output beam). This tradeoff exists because optical phased arrays rely on waveguides as emitters, which suffer from strong crosstalk when placed in close proximity relative to their mode size. Here we overcome these limitations and demonstrate a platform for optical phased arrays with 180° field of view, where more than 72 percent of the power is carried in a single diffraction-limited beam even when steered up to 60° off-axis. Our platform leverages high index-contrast, dispersion-engineered waveguides spaced one half-wavelength apart without incurring crosstalk.

Abstract:In this article, we introduce a low-cost and modular microstrip phased-array antenna, which is integrated with a 2-bit phase shifter. This module consists of a 16-element, 2-bit phase resolution, and a cooperative dc control board. The antenna subarray adopts a hexagonal aperture, and these left-handed circular polarization (LHCP) antenna elements are arranged in sparse array. Utilizing the combination of multiple subarrays can lead to a significant increase in gain, while effectively accomplishing the beam scanning process by controlling the “ON” and “OFF” states of p-i-n diodes. The simplicity of our methods stems from the ability to steer beams via a storable dc control sequence. To validate the scanning concept, a prototype consisting of seven subarrays was fabricated and measured. The measured results exhibit good agreement with the simulation one, and these steerable LHCP beams can cover a wide-angle range (about 60°) in the upper hemisphere.

Abstract:A novel low-profile phased antenna with dual-port and its two types of 1-D linear array to 2-D space wide-angle beam scanning are proposed. The antenna unit is composed of fishbone structure and rhombus parasitic patch, which is folded into n-shaped to low profile . By adjusting the phase difference ( ) from 0° to 180°, the antenna working mode is changed from even mode to hybrid mode and to odd mode eventually. Therefore, the proposed antenna unit realizes wide-angle scanning characteristics and continuous switching state from broadside lobe to endfire lobe. Furthermore, the proposed phased antenna element is extended to two kinds of 1-D linear phased array (Array#1 and Array#2) based on the generalized principle of the pattern multiplication. The fabricated Array#1 can realize beam scanning range (xo z plane), (yo z plane), and (xoy plane) and the fabricated Array#2 can achieve (xo z plane), ( plane), and (xoy plane). The proposed phased antenna unit and its 1-D array can realize 2-D space wide-angle scanning, improving scanning performance and expanding scanning dimensional space in phased array.

Abstract:We present the principle of cascade arrangement of irregular optical phased arrays. The optical phased-array beam deflector comprises arrayed optical waveguides that are spaced irregularly and arranged in a two-stage cascade. Relations between optical path differences and corresponding center-to-center spacings among elements in each stage are found, and phase matches between the two stages are achieved. Simulation shows a wide scanning angle with dramatically suppressed sidelobes.

Abstract:Optical phased arrays (OPAs) are widely used in many applications to realize high-speed optical beam scanning. At present OPAs often suffer from limited scanning range. Here we propose a circular optical phased array (COPA) based on silicon photonics platform. According to our simulations, by positioning the OPA units in a circle and adopting a specific phase distribution, the COPA can realize 360 degrees constant amplitude scanning. In addition, the design of the disk grating coupler, which is the key device of the COPA, is presented. The COPA is believed to have great potential for applications where a wide scanning range is mandatory.

Abstract:A grating lobe-free silicon optical phased array with large field of view is demonstrated. Antennas with periodically bending modulation are spaced at half wavelength or less. The experimental results show that the crosstalk between adjacent waveguides is negligible at 1550 nm wavelength. Additionally, to reduce the optical reflection caused by the sudden change of refractive index at the output antenna of the phased array, tapered antennas are added to the output end face so that more light will be coupled into the free space. The fabricated optical phased array shows a field of view of 120° without any grating lobes.

Abstract:A wide-angle scanning phased array with dual circular polarization in the Ka-band is presented in this paper. To improve the scanning capability of the phased array, the microstrip element is modified by loading many metal posts at its center and periphery. In addition, a stripline coupler is designed to achieve dual circularly polarized (CP) radiation, and the inner conductor of the subminiature micro-push-on (SSMP) connectors for feeding the coupler is extended to the top layer of the multilayer element by introducing an open stub, which simplifies the assembly process between the SSMP connector and multilayer printed circuit board (PCB) due to through-hole soldering instead of blind-hole soldering. The proposed element can cover a frequency range from 28 GHz to 30.5 GHz with a relative bandwidth of 8.5% in the Ka-band. An 8 × 8 phased array is constructed based on this proposed element, and a wide-angle scanning range from −65° to +65° is obtained for the dual circular polarization. The proposed array has a gain fluctuation of 5.1 dB and an axial ratio (AR) of less than 3.3 dB during beam-steering. The prototype is fabricated and measured, with a good agreement between the measured and simulated results. The proposed phased array can be applied in a Ka-band millimeter-wave (MMW) communication system.

Abstract:The high-speed, high-efficient, compact phase modulator array is indispensable in the Optical-phased array (OPA) which has been considered as a promising technology for realizing flexible and efficient beam steering. In our research, two methods are presented to utilize high-contrast grating (HCG) as high-efficient phase modulator. One is that HCG possesses high-Q resonances that origins from the cancellation of leaky waves. As a result, sharp resonance peaks appear on the reflection spectrum thus HCGs can be utilized as efficient phase shifters. Another is that low-Q mode HCG is utilized as ultra-lightweight mirror. With MEMS technology, small HCG displacement (similar to 50 nm) leads to large phase change (similar to 1.7 pi). Effective beam steering is achieved in Connie Chang-Hasnian's group. On the other hand, we theoretically and experimentally investigate the system design for silicon-based optical phased array, including the star coupler, phased array, emission elements and far-field patterns. Further, the non-uniform optical phased array is presented.
Optical phased array using phase-controlled optical frequency comb

Abstract:We developed an optical phased array using an optical frequency comb and demonstrated its proof-of-principle. Optical phased arrays have been actively developed in recent years as a technology that can control the wavefront of light without any mechanical devices like phased array radar. Conventional optical phased arrays have been implemented using optical integrated circuits, but it has been difficult to achieve broadband operation with simple control. This is because control and calibration of a large number of phase modulators are required for each wavelength, and the dispersion of the waveguide makes whole bandwidth phase control of ultrashort pulses difficult. In contrast, we have developed a novel optical phased array that realizes wavefront control of ultrashort pulses generated by mode-locked laser by phase control of the comb, using high controllability of the comb and an optical array antenna with free-space optics. This is achieved by simply controlling the ratio of the two radio frequencies of the comb to realize a broadband optical phased array while suppressing environmental fluctuations. Experiments demonstrated broadband optical dot scanning at an optical frequency by forming an optical dot pattern and suppressing the environmental fluctuation by controlling the comb frequency. This innovative optical technology enables direct control of wavefronts by optical frequencies, i.e. controlling transverse modes by longitudinal modes.
