Abstract:Practical gas sensing application requires sensors to quantify target analytes with high sensitivity and reproducibility. However, conventional surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) sensor lacks reproducibility and quantification arising from variations of "hot spot" distribution and measurement conditions. Here, a ratiodependent SERS sensor was developed for quantitative label-free gas sensing. Au@Ag-Au nanoparticles (NPs) were filtered onto anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) forming Au@Ag-Au@AAO SERS substrate. 4-MBA was encapsulated in the gap of Au@Ag-Au and served as the internal standard (IS) to calibrate SERS signal fluctuation for improved quantification ability. Combined with headspace sampling method, SO2 residue in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) can be extracted and captured on the immediate vicinity of Au@Ag-Au surface. The intensity ratio I-613 (-1)(cm) /I-1078 (-1)(cm) showed excellent linearity within the range of 0.5 mg/kg-500 mg/kg, demonstrating superior quantification performance for SO2 detection. Signals for concentration as low as 0.05 mg/kg of SO2 could be effectively collected, much lower than the strictest limit 10 mg/kg in Chinese Pharmacopoeia. Combined with a handheld Raman spectrometer, handy and quantitative TCM quality evaluation in aspect of SO2 residue was realized. This ratiometric SERS sensor functioned well in rapid on-site SO2 quantification, exhibiting excellent sensitivity and simple operability.

Abstract:Suppressed ion chromatography (IC) based on in-sample oxidation and SPE is described for total sulfur dioxide determination in red wines. In this method, sulfur dioxide was converted to stable sulfate ion through a simple H2O2 oxidation step and then the impurities were removed with C-18 micro-column SPE pretreatment. Finally, the sulfate was determined by suppressed ion chromatography coupled with conductivity detection and the content of total sulfur dioxide could be obtained through sulfate content by blank deduction method. By using a mixture of NaHCO3 and Na2CO3 as mobile phase, the analysis of one sample with nine anions could be completed within 25 min. For sulfate detection, a linear calibration curve with correlation coefficient of 0.9993 was obtained from the peak area with low detection limit (0.45 mg L−1, 3σ) and excellent repeatability (RSD = 1.12%, n = 6). This method was applied to sulfur dioxide determination in real wine samples and compared with conventional iodometry.

Headspace-Sampling Paper-Based Analytical Device for Colorimetric/Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering Dual Sensing of Sulfur Dioxide in Wine.

Abstract:This study demonstrates a novel strategy for colorimetric/surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) dual-mode sensing of sulfur dioxide (SO2) by coupling headspace sampling (HS) with paper-based analytical device (PAD). The smart and multifunctional PAD is fabricated with a vacuum filtration method in which 4-mercaptopyridine (Mpy)-modified gold nanorods (GNRs)-reduced graphene oxide (rGO) hybrids (rGO/MPy-GNRs), anhydrous methanol, and starch-iodine complex are immobilized into cellulose-based filter papers. The resultant PAD exhibits a deep-blue color with a strong absorption peak at 600 nm due to the formation of an intermolecular charge-transfer complex between starch and iodine. However, the addition of SO2 induces the Karl Fischer reaction, resulting in the decrease of color and increase of SERS signals. Therefore, the PAD can be used not only as a naked-eye indicator of SO2 changed from blue to colorless but also as a highly sensitive SERS substrates because of the SO2-triggered conversion of Mpy to pyridine methyl sulfate on the GNRs. A distinguishable change in the color was observed at a SO2 concentration of 5 μM by the naked eye, and a detection limit as low as 1.45 μM was obtained by virtue of UV-vis spectroscopy. The PAD-based SERS method is effective over a wide range of concentrations (1 μM to 2000 μM) for SO2, and the detection limit for SO2 is found to be 1 μM. The HS-PAD based colorimetric/SERS method is applied for the determination of SO2 in wine, and the detection results match well with those obtained from the traditional Monier-Williams method. This study not only offers a new method for on-site monitoring of SO2 but also provides a new strategy for designing of paper-based sensing platform for a wide range of field-test applications.

Abstract:Sulfur dioxide is widely used in most wines around the world. The determination of free SO2 is probably the most frequently conducted analysis in the wine industry used to assure wine conservation. The most frequently used methods of analysis are the aeration-oxidation method and the Ripper method. Both methods are relatively long and require specialized technicians. A new methodology based on voltammetry has been developed. It is based on a specialized hand-held automatic and fast analyzer that uses analytical stripes. This study compared this new method with the traditional aeration-oxidation and Ripper methods in a wide range of red and white wines. The results showed a good correlation of the voltametric method with the aeration-oxidation method as a standard and very similar results were observed with the Ripper method. Variability and precision were also high, validating the use of the proposed method for daily use in cellar work.

Abstract:Under the extensive implementation of ultra-low emission facilities, sulfur trioxide (SO3) has received increasing attention. This article reviews the measurement techniques for SO3 in flue gas, which include controlled condensation method (CCM), isopropanol absorption method (IPA), salt method, tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS), ultraviolet absorption spectroscopy (UVs), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The first three methods are chemical methods, which focus on the extraction of SO3 from flue gas. With highly reactive nature and relatively low concentrations, which are about 5 mg/m3 even lower, achieving high-fidelity flue gas sampling and non-destructive extraction of SO3 is the key to SO3 measurement. The latter three methods belong to spectroscopic methods, which focus on the principle, system composition, and influencing factor analysis. With real-time response and 1-ppm detection limit, attention is attracted to spectroscopic methods on online measurement. This article comprehensively introduces the measurement techniques for SO3 concentration in flue gas and presents conclusions so as to enable researchers to decide the direction of further investigation.
Disposable Microchamber with a Microfluidic Paper-Based Lid for Generation and Membrane Separation of SO2 Gas Employing an In Situ Electrochemical Gas Sensor for Quantifying Sulfite in Wine

Abstract:This work presents a fully disposable microchamber for gas generation of a sample solution. The microchamber consists of a cylindrical well-reactor and a paper-based microfluidic lid (μFluidic lid), which also serves as the reagent loading and dispensing unit. The base of the reactor consists of a hydrophobic membrane covering an in-house graphene electrochemical gas sensor. Fabrication of the gas sensor and the three-layer μFluidic lid is described. The μFluidic lid is designed to provide a steady addition of the acid reagent into the sample solution instead of liquid drops from a disposable syringe. There are three steps in the procedure: (i) acidification of the sample in the reactor to generate SO2 gas by the slow dispensing of the acid reagent from the μFluidic lid, (ii) diffusion of the liberated SO2 gas through the hydrophobic membrane at the base of the reactor, and (iii) in situ detection of SO2 by cathodic reduction at the graphene electrode. The device was demonstrated for quantitation of the sulfite preservative in wine without heating or stirring. The selectivity of the analysis is ensured by the combination of the gas-diffusion membrane and the selectivity of the electrochemical sensor. The linear working range is 2-60 mg L-1 SO2, with a limit of detection (3SD of intercept/slope) of 1.5 mg L-1 SO2. This in situ method has the shortest analysis time (8 min per sample) among all voltammetric methods that detect SO2(g) via membrane gas diffusion.
Direct determination of Cd, Cu and Pb in wines and grape juices by thermospray flame furnace atomic absorption spectrometry

Abstract:The applicability of thermospray flame furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (TS-FF-AAS) was evaluated for direct determination of Cu, Cd and Pb in wines and grape juices. The developed procedure does not require preliminary acid digestion of the samples. The optimum conditions for determination of Cu, Cd and Pb in wines were studied and the performance was compared to those typically obtained by flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS). A sample volume of 150 microL was introduced into a heated nickel tube at a flow rate of 0.54 mLmin(-1) and 0.14 molL(-1) HNO(3) was used as sample carrier flowing at 2.5 mLmin(-1) for determining all analytes. The effect of ethanol concentrations on Cu, Cd and Pb absorbance signals were studied. All determinations were carried out by adopting optimized conditions and quantification was based on the standard additions method. Limits of detection (LOD) of 12.9, 1.8 and 5.3 microgL(-1) (n=14) for Cu, Cd and Pb, respectively, were obtained for wine samples (3sigma(blank)/slope, n=14). Relative standard deviations (R.S.D., %) of 2.7, 2.1 and 2.6 for Cu, Cd and Pb, were obtained (n=6) for wine samples. The values determined for grape juice samples were similar to these ones. The analytical throughput was 45 determinations h(-1) and accuracy was checked by addition-recovery experiments.

Abstract:Sulfur dioxide (SO 2 ) is a typical additive that serves as an antioxidant, preservative, and decolorizer in industrial production. Yet, excessive SO 2 residues in the products pose a potential risk to human health. Although many fluorescent probes have been developed for the detection of SO 2 , effectively eliminating the interference from thiols on the selective recognition of SO 2 remains a challenge. Herein, we developed a coumarin-derived ratiometric fluorescent probe 1 for quantitatively sensing the SO 2 residues in actual samples. This probe can selectively recognize bisulfite (HSO 3 - ) based on the different p K a values between HSO 3 - and thiols. The working mechanism of this probe was further rationalized by the combination of experiments and quantum chemical calculations. Probe 1 was successfully used for the quantitative detection of SO 2 residues in medicine-food homology (MFH) samples with good sensitivity and accuracy. Furthermore, rapid visual and semi-quantitative detection of SO 2 can also be realized through a disposable test tube.

H2S Volume Fraction Monitoring Based on Characteristic Wavelength-Integrated Absorption Spectroscopy

Abstract:At present, producing clean gas through anaerobic digestion is one of the main means to treat food waste. As food waste contains sulfur, H2S gas will inevitably be generated during anaerobic digestion. H2S gas is inevitably generated during anaerobic digestion due to the presence of sulfur in food wastes. The produced H2S can lead to corrosion in pipelines and environmental pollution. Thus, it is essential to measure its volume fraction online. Traditional H2S volume fraction measurement methods, such as methylene blue spectrophotometry, iodometry, and electrochemical methods, involve complex operation, slow measurement speed, and can easily be affected by other gases. In addition, these methods cannot be used to guide the timely adjustment of the working conditions of the desulfurization system. Therefore, we develope an approach combined the ultraviolet absorption spectroscopy and continuous wavelength integration method for the online measurement of H2S volume fraction. The linear relationship between the characteristic value of the absorption spectrum integration and H2S volume fraction is obtained by selecting a 210-230 nm band as the characteristic band, with a fitting degree > 0. 999. To measure the volume fraction of H2S, we prepare 200x10(-6)-1200x10(-6) of H2S standard gas in a laboratory, and the maximum error of the measured value is 3. 1%. Finally, the measurement device is applied to the anaerobic digestion of kitchen wastes, and the field test is conducted. The results demonstrate that the instrument can accurately monitor the change in H2S volume fraction of biogas during the anaerobic digestion process.

Abstract:Sulfites (sulfur dioxide) and inorganic sulfites are types of food additives and preservatives, widely used in the production of food and herbal medicines (HMs). However, the overingestion of sulfites and its associates are harmful to human health and may cause medical complications. Various methods and instruments have been developed for measuring sulfites in foods and HMs, but they typically suffer from many issues, such as high detection limitation, inaccurate and non-reliable results, time and labor-intensive sample preparation, and high cost. Herein, we present a fast, sensitive, and quantitative method to determine sulfites in HMs using field asymmetric-wave ion mobility spectrometry (FAIMS) coupled with a headspace bubbling method. The headspace air bubbling method is effective and efficient at generating stable sulfur dioxide (SO2) in the gas phase for FAIMS analysis. It allows sulfites with a concentration down to 1 mg kg(-1) to be easily detected by this new method in 20 min, much shorter than with current technologies. The limits of detection (LOD) and limits of quantification (LOQ) are 1 mg kg(-1) and 3 mg kg(-1) in HMs, respectively. The new method is of great significance to ensure medical safety and for HM production quality control.

Abstract:Sulfur dioxide and its derivative sulfite widely existed in air, water as the environment pollutant. Sulfite is also commonly used as preservative and additive in fresh fruits, vegetables, wines and pharmaceutical materials. Due to sulfite closely related with human diseases, it is very urgent for the sensitive and rapid quantification of sulfite in various samples. In our study, a turn-on near infrared (NIR) fluorescent probe (MDQ) was developed for sulfite detection based on a Michael addition reaction, with high sensitivity (LOD 4.16 nmol/L), selectivity and fast response time (400 s). Using MDQ, a quantify method for sulfite in traditional Chinese medicines (TCMs) was developed with advantages of high precision, accuracy and convenient operation. Furthermore, according to the photophysical property of MDQ, a portable fluorescence detector is designed to quantify sulfite for TCMs and surface water in Dalian city of China. Therefore, the developed fluorescent probe MDQ and portable fluorescent detector as a rapid inspection instrument were successfully used to real-time monitor the sulfite in various complex samples.

Mechanism of SO3/H2SO4 transformation and reduction in wet flue gas desulfurization systems

Abstract:In this study, a unique sampling unit combining quartz wool filtration and salt adsorption, which can measure aerosol and gaseous H2SO4 simultaneously, was adopted to reveal the transformation and reduction of SO3/H2SO4 in a lab-scale wet flue gas desulfurization (WFGD) scrubber. The results showed that H2SO4 in flue gas at the inlet of the WFGD scrubber is in both gaseous and aerosol states, and the gaseous state constitutes a larger proportion, differing from the conventional realization that all H2SO4 at WFGD scrubber inlets is gaseous. The experiments showed that the amount of H2SO4 aerosols increased, and that of H2SO4 vapor decreased in the scrubber, indicating H2SO4 transformation from a gaseous to an aerosol state after quenching. However, there is always a small portion of H2SO4 vapor that could be detected at the outlet, suggesting that H2SO4 cannot be completely converted to aerosols in the scrubber, differing from traditional assumption. We also found that spraying droplets could reduce H2SO4 but with low efficiency. The demister installed at the scrubber outlet is more efficient at reducing H2SO4 than the droplets, which inspires a new understanding of the mechanism of H2SO4 reduction in WFGD processes.

Abstract:An accurate and simple method using gas chromatography was developed for the determination of sulfur compounds in syngas.Six-way valve with three loops for auto introduction of sample and flame photometry detector(FPD) having satisfactory selectivity for sulfur and phosphorus were used.The linear regression relationship between the logarithm of the dose versus the logarithm of the peak area were obtained giving correlation coefficients of 0.999 5,0.999 7 and 0.999 7 for H_2S,COS and CS_2 respectively.

Abstract:. A simple and novel flow injection method for the determination of gaseous SO 2 is described based on gas permeation denuder (GPD) online sampling and preconcentration. The GPD is easily prepared with poly(vinylidene) difluoride microporous membrane as gas permeable material and two Perspex blocks with smooth and flat interface and rectangular engraved channels of mirror image. The sample gas is on one side of the membrane and phosphate buffer of pH 7.0 as the absorbing solution is on the other side. Gaseous SO 2 permeates partially through the gas permeable membrane and dissolves in the absorbing solution. After preconcentration for 5.0 or 8.0 min, the solution is injected into the flow of 5.0×10 –4 mol L –1 5,5'-dithiobis(2,2'-dinitrobenzoic acid) (DTNB) in 0.025 mol L –1 phosphate buffer. The resulting product formed between DTNB and absorbed SO 2 is spectrophotometrically monitored at 410 nm with a charge coupled device (CCD) fiber optic spectrometer. The calibration graphs for preconcentration of 5.0 and 8.0 min are linear up to 4.0 and 3.2 mg m –3 with detection limits of 50 and 35 µg m –3 , respectively. The corresponding analysis speeds are 8.5 and 6 samples h –1 . The method is selective and just suffer from interference of hydrogen sulfide at higher than 1% of SO 2 level (in m/V) with an error >+10%. The assay just uses cheap and common membrane and reagents and shows potential application in the monitoring of atmospheric SO 2 .
On-Site Measurement of Trace-Level Sulfide in Natural Waters by Vapor Generation and Microchannel Collection

Abstract:Aqueous sulfide plays an important role in the environment even at low concentrations. However, it is unstable, which means field samples cannot be transported to the laboratory for analysis without fixation. In this work, a novel method was developed to determine trace levels of sulfide on site. This method is based on vapor generation and collection in a special microchannel device followed by fluorescence measurement (VG-μGAS). The microchannel scrubber gave a high enrichment factor, and a high sensitivity was achieved, which allowed measurement of nanomolar (nM) levels of sulfide. The theoretical approach to vapor generation for several compounds is discussed to evaluate the applicability of the method to these analytes, and compounds having a low Henry's law constant (<1 M atm(-1)) are suitable to measure by VG-μGAS. Under optimized conditions, concentrations of 1.0-100 nM of sulfide could be measured. The sulfide contents of hot spring, aquarium, pond, and seawater were successfully measured by this method. Nanomolar levels of sulfide could be measured on site without loss of analyte, and results were obtained instantly in the field, both of which are advantageous for effective field surveys. The method was also applied to field measurements of aqueous sulfide in the Ariake Sea and Lake Baikal.

Abstract:Sulfur dioxide (SO2) derivatives are typically employed as antioxidants in food and pharmaceutical processing. However, excessive sulfite intake could trigger serious health problems. Hence, it is urgent to establish a rapid and effective system for monitoring SO2. This study adopted a one-step hydrothermal method to synthesize dual-emitting nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (CECDs) and developed a ratiometric sensor for sulfite using CECDs-Cr (VI) composites. The emission intensity ratio (I440/I500) of the CECDs-Cr (VI) composites increased considerably with the addition of HSO3-. A method based on the ratiometric sensor was established for SO2 derivatives with advanced efficiency and excellent linearity over a broad concentration range of 0-500 μM (R2 = 0.9946). Four medicine-food homology materials (MFHMs) fumigated with sulfur have been accurately detected using this approach. Furthermore, a portable test tube was prepared to achieve rapid and semi-quantitative detection of SO2 residues and applied to real samples. This work presents an effective approach to develop a rapid on-site detection platform for sulfite residues in food and pharmaceuticals.
A Sensitive Chemiluminescence Flow System for the Determination of Sulfite

Abstract:A novel chemiluminescence (CL) now system for sulfite with flow-injection analysis is presented in this paper. It is based on the wet chemiluminescence produced by auto-oxidation of sulfite in the presence of Rh6G, immobilized electrostatically on a cation exchange column. Tween 80 surfactant micelles showed a strong enhancement effect on this weak chemiluminescence. The system responds linearly to sulfite concentration in the range of 0.01-5 mg l(-1) (r(2)=0.996) with a detection limit (3 sigma) of 0.01 mg l(-1). Interfering metal ions coexisting in sample solutions could be effectively eliminated on-line by an upstream cation exchanger. A complete analysis could be performed in 1 min with a relative standard deviation of less than 5% (n=11). The system is stable for over 500 determinations and has been successfully applied to the determination of sulfite in VK3 injections and sulfur dioxide in air.

Abstract:Nitric oxide (NO) and sulfur dioxide (SO2) are mainly from burning fossil fuels. They are toxic gases and harmful to environment and human health. It is very important to monitor the level of SO2 and NO in flue gas. In this work, an optical SO2 and NO measurement system was established based on differential optical absorption spectroscopy (DOAS). A cross-sensitivity band of SO2 and NO was selected, fast Fourier transform (FFT) was employed to decompose the differential optical density (DOD) characteristics of SO2 in the mixed gas, inverse FFT (IFFT) was employed to reconstruct the DOD of SO2, and the interference of NO on SO2 was overcome. The most sensitive absorption peak but strongly interfered by SO2 was selected to monitor NO. A method that was employed to decompose the DOD of NO was proposed, and the interference of SO2 on NO was overcome. The full-scale error of system reached 0.7% for SO2 and NO, respectively, and the detection limit (DL) of SO2 and NO reached 0.36 and 0.39 ppm, respectively.

Abstract:A novel chromenylium-based fluorescent probe was exploited for sulphur dioxide (SO₂) detecting. The probe displayed a remarkable fluorescence turn-on response towards SO₂ based on the nucleophilic addition reaction to the carbon-carbon double bond with 105 nm Stock shift. The probe was successfully applied for the quantification of SO₂.The linear detection range was from 0-160 μM with the detection limit as low as 99.27 nM. It also exhibited high selectivity for SO₂ than other reactive species and amino acids. Furthermore, cell staining experiments indicated that the probe was cell membrane permeable and could be used for high-performance imaging of SO₂ in living cells. The superior properties of the probe made it highly promising for use in chemical and biological applications.
