Abstract:The catalytic N2O decomposition was investigated over a series of NiCe mixed oxides. Characterizations of XRD, N2-adsorption, SEM, XPS, and H2-TPR were applied to correlate their properties with the corresponding catalytic performance. The catalyst Ni90Ce10 prepared by citrate acid method exhibited the highest catalytic activity among the mixed oxides, which could completely decompose N2O at 400 °C in the presence of oxygen. The introduction of CeO2 could prevent the agglomeration of NiO and preserve high surface area. A strong interaction between NiO and CeO2 was observed in the mixed oxides; the interaction enhanced oxygen mobility and resisted the inhibition of O2.

Abstract:The catalytic N2O decomposition was investigated over a series of CuxCe1−xOy mixed oxides with different Cu/Ce molar ratios. Effects of synergy over mixed oxides of CeO2 and CuO were observed significantly, the catalyst of Cu0.67Ce0.33Oy exhibited the high activity among the Cu–Ce–O mixed oxides for N2O decomposition. Characterizations of XRD, N2-adsorption, XPS, and H2-TPR were applied to correlate their properties with the corresponding catalytic performance, and reveal the synergetic effect between CuO and CeO2 for N2O decomposition. In situ DRIFTS investigation confirmed the presence of CuI species that was closely related with the activity of CuxCe1−xOy catalyst. The synergy of CuxCe1−xOy promoted the stability and the ability to regenerate the active CuI site.

Abstract:The performance of CO2 methanation has critical relationships with oxygen vacancies, thus the fundamental insights of oxygen vacancies activation are of great importance. Herein, a series of Ni-based CeO2 catalysts fabricated via impregnation and electrospinning methods were employed to study the variation of CO2 methanation performance in terms of the dynamic analysis of intermediates and correlations of oxygen vacancies. The NiNPs@CeO2NF catalyst prepared by the co-electrospinning method shows superior catalytic performance with CO2 conversion of 50.6 % and 82.3 % at the low temperature of 250 °C and 300 °C, respectively, as well as excellent stability of 60 h at a high temperature of 400 °C. The achieved catalytic properties could be attributed to the confined environment and synergistic effect between Ni nanoparticles and CeO2 nanofibers. Additionally, in-situ Raman verified that nanofibers can form more active oxygen vacancies and adsorb well with CO2. In-situ DRIFTS analysis reveals that the monodentate and bridging bidentate formate were the key intermediates for CO2 methanation.

Abstract:A series of CeO2 supports with particular morphologies (nanorods, nanocubes, nanooctas, and nanoparticles) were successfully fabricated by controlling the parameters of the hydrothermal method. The obtained nano-CeO2 materials were utilized as the supports of the Ni-based CO2 methanation catalysts prepared by the incipient impregnation method. It was found that the catalyst supported on the CeO2 nanoparticles (5Ni/NPs) exhibited much higher catalytic activity and better stability than those of catalysts with other morphological CeO2 supports. Thus, the catalytic performance of Ni/CeO2 catalysts could be facilely tuned and optimized by precisely designing the morphology of the CeO2 support. The XPS, CO2-TPD, and H2-TPR characterizing techniques showed that Ni-based catalysts supported on nano-CeO2 with varied morphologies displayed different catalytic performances. It was supposed that the typical merits, such as the abundant oxygen vacancy, medium basic sites, moderate metal-support interaction, excellent reduction ability, etc., were considered as the main origins for the enhancement of the low-temperature catalytic activities. Furthermore, the kinetic study revealed that the Ni-based catalysts supported on the nano-CeO2 with varied morphologies performed the different apparent activation energies toward CO2 methanation. The specific reaction intermediates and possible reaction pathways were carefully investigated through the in-situ DRIFTS and online TPSR techniques. Overall, this work would provide new perspectives that the roles of the morphology effect of the support ought to be emphatically considered when designing new catalysts.
High-Performance Strategy and Degradation Mechanism of Cezrvox Catalysts for Nox Reduction

Abstract:The denitrification (deNOx) performance of catalysts is affected directly by redox ability and surface acidity, and regulating the balance between both of which is a major step toward enhancing the performance of catalysts. The CeZrOx catalyst has garnered widespread attention in the field of deNOx due to its excellent oxygen storage capacity. This study uses VOx as an acid promoter to adjust the redox centers and acidity sites on the CeZrOx catalyst, utilizing the synergistic effect of both to demonstrate its optimal deNOx performance. The experimental results indicate that doping an appropriate amount of VOx can effectively enhance the NH3-SCR activity of Ce0.60Zr0.40Ox, while also improving its resistance to SO2 and H2O. Characterization results confirm that, the surface active oxygen species on Ce0.50Zr0.40V0.10Ox increase and V doping enhances the catalyst's redox properties comparing with Ce0.60Zr0.40Ox, which obtains more Br & oslash;nsted and Lewis acid sites, adjusting the balance between the redox centers and acidity sites, thus playing a synergistic promoting role. Ce0.50Zr0.40V0.10Ox possesses the lowest apparent activation energy (Ea), enhancing the adsorption capability for NH3 and increasing the reaction rate of adsorbed NH3 and gaseous NO + O2, thereby exhibiting optimal deNOx performance. The surface VOx and ZrOx would provide adsorption sites for gas molecules, utilizing the synergistic effect of both to demonstrate its optimal deNOx performance on ZrVOx-CeO2 surface. This provides valuable insight for the preparation of new and efficient deNOx catalysts using the strategy of synergistically promoting oxygen reduction sites and acidity sites.
MOF-derived Hollow Porous Ni/CeO2 Octahedron with High Efficiency for N2O Decomposition

Abstract:A novel material of hollow porous NiO@CeO2 octahedron (HPOC) derived-from cerium-based metal-organic frameworks (MOF) was prepared as a high-performance catalyst for N2O decomposition. Octahedron-shaped cerium-based MOF was successfully synthesized with formic acid as a structure-modulating agent by rational controlling the volume ratio of N,N-dimethylformamide and formic acid at 4:1. The obtained NiO@CeO2-HPOC was systematically characterized to reveal its morphology, structure and surface properties. TEM, SEM and N2 adsorption-desorption isotherms results confirm the well-defined octahedral morphology and hollow porous structures of NiO@CeO2-HPOC. EDS mapping and XRD studies indicate that NiO@CeO2-HPOC hybrid composite exhibits relatively homogeneous Ni dispersion and small NiO size, which comes from the unique coordination bond and porosity of cerium-based MOF precursor. H-2-TPR analysis shows that uniform nickel distribution enables the highly dispersed NiO species in NiO@CeO2-HPOC. Furthermore, Raman and XPS results indicate that NiO@CeO2-HPOC possesses large amount of oxygen vacancies. The hollow porous structures, homogeneous Ni dispersion, as well as large amount of oxygen vacancies facilitate the catalytic efficiency. As a result, NiO@CeO2-HPOC exhibits a high catalytic activity and enhanced O-2 tolerance for N2O decomposition.

Abstract:Optimizing the electronic structure lies at the core of promoting the intrinsic activity of electrocatalyst for oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Herein, we incorporated Mo dopants and Ni vacancies into two-dimensional ultrathin NiOOH to boost the OER activity. Experimental results exhibited that the integration of two defects modulate the electronic structure and generate more high-valance Ni species under OER conditions, which greatly enhance the catalytic performance by delivering a high current density of 30 mA cm−2 at a low overpotential of 280 mV. Density functional theory calculations identified the most active center of a surface Ni site that is close to a sublayer Ni vacancy separated by a sublayer Mo dopant, where the optimized electronic structure moves the Gibbs free energy of (ΔGO*) close to the midpoint between ΔGOOH* and ΔGOH*, greatly decreasing the catalytic overpotential and enhancing the catalytic activity. This study emphasizes the importance of exploring the synergy between different defect structures to break the scaling relation for promoted catalytic performance.

Abstract:The rational designing morphology and regulating active sites of catalyst is crucial to promoting catalytic performances. Herein, a series of controllable hollow NiCo2O4 nanoparticles with interconnected hierarchically porous structure and abundant oxygen vacancies were successfully constructed by a simple template-free solvothermal method and followed by heat treatment. The obtained hollow and porous NiCo2O4 exhibit interesting oxygen vacancies (Vo) defect-dependent activity, where the NiCo2O4-450-Vo show the outstanding performance in the methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) as well as the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) with four electron reaction pathway in alkaline solution. This work may pave a facile pathway to design the hollow and porous NiCo2O4 nanospheres with the adjustable oxygen vacancies defect to accelerate various electrochemical reactions in fuel cells and other applications.

Abstract:Oxygen vacancies have been widely concerned with the facilitation effects of CO2 activation for CO2 methanation. However, little attention has been paid to the generation of active intermediate species induced by enriched oxygen vacancies. Herein, we discovered that CeNiO3-3 catalyst enriched oxygen vacancies can efficiently activate CO2 and realize high activity for photothermal CO2 methanation. In situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) proved that oxygen vacancies are beneficial to the formation of reactive intermediate species of polydentate carbonate over CeNiO3-3, which is crucial for efficient CO2 methanation. These results revealed mechanistic insights into how effective CO2 activation induced by oxygen vacancies can be manipulated by adjusting the adsorption intermediate species. Abstract:A series of Cs-modified CuO/CeO 2 mixed oxide catalysts was prepared for enhancing the stable activity of N 2 O decomposition. It was found that Cs modification promoted the catalytic performance of CuO/CeO 2 catalysts significantly. The 1%Cs-CuO/CeO 2 catalyst exhibited the best activity, and the conversion of N 2 O reached 100% at 380 °C in the presence of 2% O 2 . The catalytic behaviors were investigated by means of XRD, N 2 adsorption iso-therms, XPS, H 2 -TPR(TPR: temperature-programmed reduction), CO-IR, O 2 -TPD(TPD: temperature-programmed desorption) and diffused reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectorscopy(DRIFTs). The results revealed that Cs modification promoted the activity and the oxygen resistance by enhancing the desorption of surface oxygen species and increasing the content of Ce 3+ . CO-DRIFTs revealed that Ce 3+ could efficiently facilitate the regeneration of active Cu + sites by an oxygen migration step. The possible reaction mechanism was also discussed.

Abstract:Zeolitic-imidazolate framework precursors (ZIF-67) were synthesized in an inorganic solution with triethylamine as a deprotonating agent for N2O decomposition, and the catalytic activities of the pyrolysis products under different conditions were investigated. Among them, the Co/CoOx@carbon catalyst pyrolyzed at 650 degrees C in a N-2 atmosphere (Co-650N) exhibited excellent low-temperature catalytic activity and stability, achieving 50% decomposition efficiency at 305 degrees C and similar to 100% at 400 degrees C, which benefitted from its large specific surface area, great reduction performance, abundant cobalt active sites, and surface oxygen species. Further, utilizing temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) and in situ diffused reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) results, it was found that N2O molecules preferentially combined with oxygen species bound to cobalt sites. The absorbed N2O was decomposed into N-2 and oxygen species, and the latter was subsequently transferred to carbon frameworks. Interestingly, the amorphous graphitic carbon frameworks played an important role in transferring/storing active oxygen and regenerating cobalt sites. Moreover, Co-650N exhibited better resistance to SO2, and the efficiency could be recovered via heating and finally stabilized at 100%. Finally, the mechanisms of N2O decomposition and sulfur poisoning-reactivation on Co/CoOx@carbon catalysts were proposed for the first time.

Abstract:A surface digging effect of supported Ni NPs on an amorphous N-doped carbon is described, during which the surface-loaded Ni NPs would etch and sink into the underneath carbon support to prevent sintering. This process is driven by the strong coordination interaction between the surface Ni atoms and N-rich defects. In the aim of activation of C-H bonds for methane oxidation, those sinking Ni NPs could be further transformed into thermodynamically stable and active metal-defect sites within the as-generated surface holes by simply elevating the temperature. In situ transmission electron microscopy images reveal the sunk Ni NPs dig themselves adaptive surface holes, which would largely prevent the migration of Ni NPs without weakening their accessibility. The reported two-step strategy opens up a new route to manufacture sintering-resistant supported metal catalysts without degrading their catalytic efficiency.

Abstract:CO2 absorption and activation play key roles in the process of CO2 methanation, but revealing the mechanism and synergistic effects are still challenges, especially in some complicated routes. Herein, an optimized hollow Ni/CeO2-Co3O4 catalyst is shown to be capable of CO2 absorption and activation, the performance could be attributed to the strong synergistic effects among each component. In addition, the respective role was verified that the Co3O4 and CeO2 contributed to the CO2 adsorption and subsequently coupled with Ni for CO2 activation. Furthermore, in-situ DRIFTS were used to demonstrate the hydrogenation mechanisms, and the promotion of CO2 absorption and CH4 selectivity was confirmed in Ni/CeO2-Co3O4. The DFT results verified the synergistic effects of the established catalysts, which could also be a universal strategy for the catalysts designation.

Abstract:Catalytic carbamate decomposition is a feasible option for reducing the heat duty of amine solvent regeneration during the chemisorption of CO2 capture; advanced material with excellent proton transfer and exchange performance is crucial to boost the decomposition kinetics in an alkaline environment. Here, we prepared magnetic heterostructure Ni/NiO nanocatalysts with tunable Ni(0) nanoparticles and NiO support. The heterointerface of the proposed materials creates abundant surface oxygen vacancies (OVs) and offers abundant reactive active sites ascribed to the special electron transfer scheme of Ni-0-NiO. The generated surface hydroxyls and unsaturated coordinated Ni, respectively, provide transferable protons and electrons, involved in the deprotonation of RNH3+ and C-N break of RNHCOO-. Thus, the obtained nanomaterials achieved considerably improved CO2 desorption of up to 3 mmol/min for a CO2-saturated monoethanolamine solvent, representing a substantial (approximately 50%) increase over the catalyst-free case. The reinforcement mechanism of OV generation by the Ni/NiO heterostructure and the induced proton transfer were revealed through in situ spectroscopic measurement and theoretical calculations. The results verified that the OVs stimulate the production of surface hydroxyls and water-assisted proton hopping, providing an advantageous condition for carbamate decomposition.

Abstract:Morphological effects of nanoparticles are crucial in many solid-catalyzed chemical transformations. We herein prepared two manganese-ceria solid solutions, well-defined MnCeO x nanorods and MnCeO x -nanocubes, exposing preferentially (111) and (100) facets of ceria, respectively. The incorporation of Mn dopant into ceria lattice strongly enhanced the catalytic performance in the NO reduction with CO. MnCeO x (111) catalyst outperformed MnCeO x (100) counterpart due to its higher population density of oxygen vacancy defects. In-situ infrared spectroscopy investigations indicated that the reaction pathway over MnCeO x and pristine CeO 2 is similar and that besides the direct pathway, an indirect pathway via adsorbed hyponitrite as an intermediate cannot be ruled out. X-ray photoelectron and Raman spectroscopies as well as first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that the enhanced catalytic performance of MnCeO x can be traced back to its "Mn—O L (VÖ)—Mn—O L (VÖ)—Ce" connectivities. The Mn dopant strongly facilitates the formation of surface oxygen vacancies (VÖ) by liberating surface lattice oxygen (O L ) via CO* + O L → CO 2 * + VÖ and promotes the reduction of NO, according to NO* + VÖ → N* + O L and 2N* → N 2 . The Mn dopant impact on both the adsorption of CO and activation of O L reveals that a balance between these two effects is critical for facilitating all reaction steps.

Abstract:Crystal facet and defect engineering are crucial for designing heterogeneous catalysts. In this study, different solvents were utilized to generate NiO with distinct shapes (hexagonal layers, rods, and spheres) using nickel-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as precursors. It was shown that the exposed crystal facets of NiO with different morphologies differed from each other. Various characterization techniques and density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that hexagonal-layered NiO (NiO-L) possessed excellent low-temperature reducibility and oxygen migration ability. The (111) crystal plane of NiO-L contained more lattice defects and oxygen vacancies, resulting in enhanced propane oxidation due to its highest O 2 adsorption energy. Furthermore, the higher the surface active oxygen species and surface oxygen vacancy concentrations, the lower the C−H activation energy of the NiO catalyst and hence the better the catalytic activity for the oxidation of propane. Consequently, NiO-L exhibited remarkable catalytic activity and good stability for propane oxidation. This study provided a simple strategy for controlling NiO crystal facets, and demonstrated that the oxygen defects could be more easily formed on NiO(111) facets, thus would be beneficial for the activation of C−H bonds in propane. In addition, the results of this work can be extended to the other fields, such as propane oxidation to propene, fuel cells, and photocatalysis.
