Abstract:Porous copper fiber sintered wicks (PCFSWs) with homogeneous and gradient porosity are fabricated using a low-temperature solid-phase sintering method. In this study, the capillary pumping amount of PCFSWs are measured and the influences of fiber morphology, working fluid, porosity and its distribution on the capillary pumping performance of PCFSWs are investigated. Centrifugal tests are also conducted to determine the liquid holding performance of PCFSWs. The capillary pumping characteristic curves and maximum capillary pumping amount are discussed based on Darcy's law, and the calculated results agree well with the experimental results of maximum capillary pumping amount. With deionized water as the working fluid, the rough PCFSWs exhibit higher maximum capillary pumping amount than smooth PCFSWs. The capillary pumping amount of PCFSWs with homogeneous porosity first increases and then decreases with increasing porosity, and the maximum capillary pumping amount is obtained for the PCFSW with 70% porosity. Furthermore, much larger capillary pumping amount of 90-70% gradient porosity PCFSWs is observed with the high-porosity end close to the liquid level. When ethanol is selected as the working fluid, the capillary pumping amount of PCFSWs with homogeneous porosity gradually decrease with increasing porosity, and the maximum capillary pumping amount is obtained for the PCFSW with 60% porosity. For the PCFSWs with 70-90% gradient porosity, much larger capillary pumping amount is obtained with the low-porosity end close to the liquid level. In addition, the centrifugal tests show the rough PCFSWs with deionized water and low porosity possess a smaller centrifugal amount and show better liquid holding performance. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd.
