Abstract:We report highly versatile gas sensors using polymer film coated optical micro/nanofibers (MNFs). Based on the evanescent wave absorption of the doped acid-base indicator, polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) microflow cell encapsulated MNFs are used for humidity and NH3 sensing with fast response, high sensitivity and large dynamic range. The compact and flexible sensing scheme shown here may be attractive for fast detection in physical, chemical, and medical applications with high sensitivity and small footprint.
A Durable and Miniature Microfluid Device for Detection of Aggregation-Induced Emission Molecules

Abstract:An aggregation-induced emission (AIE) molecules detecting device was proposed. It was a microfluid sensor, fabricated with Teflon AF 2400 capillary and micromachining technique. The Teflon capillary played three roles in the detecting system simultaneously: the microfluid channel, the optical waveguide and the fluorescence collector. The microfluid channel was formed by a laser ablated micro hole and an open capillary end. The optical waveguide and the fluorescence collector were functionalized by the particular refractive index (RI) of the capillary, which was 1.29, lower than water (RI: 1.33). When filled with AIE solution, the Teflon capillary had a RI distribution of inner higher and outer lower which form an optical waveguide. Then the excited fluorescence was collected and transmitted within it. The length of capillary was optimized through an experimental method. With an optimized device, the fluorescence intensity depending on the concentration was tested. The experimental results were in accordance with the traditional micro plate spectrophotometer methods. The limit of detection (LOD) was obtained as 3.94 mu M with only 1.946 mu l volume solutions, better than previous works. The bending loss of the device was also examined. With the curvature of 10.3 m(-1), only 13% transmission loss was detected which means the sensing device could be expected to apply in vivo. In addition with the advantages of small size and durable structure, the proposed device has bright future in many biosensing applications.
Hollow-Core-Photonic-Crystal-Fiber-Based Miniaturized Sensor for the Detection of Aggregation-Induced-Emission Molecules

Abstract:A miniature sensor for detection of aggregation-induced-emission (AIE) molecules is proposed in this work. The sensing head is fabricated by use of hollow-core photonic crystal fiber with a core diameter of about 4.8 μm. The cladding holes are sealed with a fusion splicing technique, and the central hole remains open to allow the filtration of solution with AIE molecules. When the solution is excited by an ultraviolet lamp, the fluorescence is received by a fiber-optic spectrometer. The fluorescence intensity is associated with the concentration of AIE molecules and the infiltrated-core length. In the whole process of the experiments, the output-peak wavelength is stable, which indicates that the existing forms of AIE particles are stable, and the fluorescence reabsorption can be neglected. The experimental results obtained are in accordance with traditional microplate-spectrophotometer methods. The most exciting result is that the amount of sample measured can be as low as 0.36 nL, which allows the detection of AIE molecules at only 0.02 pmol. In addition, the miniature sensor was successfully applied to the detection of an AIE-based bioprobe for evaluating the activity of the dipeptidyl-peptidase 4 (DPP-4) inhibitor sitagliptin with an IC50 of 59.80 ± 3.06 nM. The advantages of small device size and nanoliter-scale sample volumes suggest that the proposed sensor is promising for many biosensing applications.
Aggregation Induced Emission and Volatile Acid Vapour Sensing in Acridine Appended Poly (Aryl Ether) Based Low Molecular Weight Organogelator

Abstract:Considerable research attention has been devoted to the development of portable and rapid fluorescence sensors that can selectively detect volatile acids due to the harmful effects of acid vapour on environment and human health. Although various types of fluorophores have been reported for sensing volatile acid vapours, regulation of the sensory response using aggregation induced emissive (AIE) based gelators is rarely reported. In this study, we present the design and synthesis of a novel organogelator that is capable of sensing volatile acids through AIE. An acridine-attached poly(aryl)ether dendron molecular system is synthesized through aldimine coupling reaction, which self-assembles and forms a gel, exhibiting AIE behavior. The synthesized molecule and prepared gel are characterized using NMR, MASS, XRD, SEM and rheology techniques. The AIE property of the APD is investigated using steady-state absorption and emission spectroscopic techniques. Further, the sensory response of the APD gelator with various analytes is tested, and the results indicate that APD shows rapid response particularly to acid vapours, where the detection limit (DL) of the trifluoroacetic acid (TFA), hydrochloric acid (HCl) and nitric acid (HNO3) vapor was as low as 0.22, 0.9 and 0.30 ppm, respectively. APD solid film in filter paper shows visual color change from yellow to red in aqueous acidic medium and the effect is reversed in alkaline medium. These findings suggest that APD gelator can be potentially utilized to generate a portable acid vapor sensor kit due to its low detection limit and rapid response time and also as an alternate substitute for existing acid indicators.

Abstract:Amines play vital roles in agricultural, pharmaceutical, and food industries, but volatile amine vapors are serious threats to human health. Previously reported fluorescent sensors for amine vapor detection usually suffer from aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) effect and need to be dispersed in solution or matrix materials. Herein, based on the fluorogen of 2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)quinazolin-4(3H)-one (HPQ) with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties, we have developed a fluorescent sensor HPQ-Ac for light-up detection of amine vapors through aminolysis reaction. The portable HPQ-Ac sensor can be easily prepared by directly depositing on filter paper, and it can only light up via exposure to amine vapors among various volatile organic compounds. Taking advantage of its portability and high sensitivity for amine vapors, HPQ-Ac sensor can also be used for food spoilage detection and fluorescent invisible ink.

Abstract:An ultra-sensitive microfluid device for detecting aggregation of induced emission molecules is proposed and demonstrated. The minimum detectable concentration is greatly reduced by use of a micromachined fiber tip and a liquid core waveguide. The fiber tip is a tapered-microlens structure with optimized shape parameters. The liquid waveguide is formed with low refractive index Teflon capillary. The dependence of photoluminescence intensity on the concentration change is tested with the device. The limit of detection is $0.316 \boldsymbol {\mu }\text{M}$ , the volume of the sample solution used is only $0.649 \boldsymbol {\mu }\text{L}$ and the minimum detectable concentration is down to 100 nM. It is a valuable result obtained with fiber spectrometer (a CCD-type machine), better than that obtained with traditional fluorospectro photometer (a photomultiplier tubes-type one). The reversibility and stability are also testified through experimental method. Together with the compact size, small sample volume and high sensitivity, the durable microfluidic sensing device has great potential for biosensing applications.

Abstract:Over recent decades, aggregation-induced emission (AIE) molecules have attracted increasing attention. Restriction of intramolecular rotation (RIR) has been widely accepted as the cause of the emission when AIE molecules aggregate into clusters. The intramolecular rotation of AIE molecules can be monitored by molecular vibration spectra such as nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), infrared, and Raman, especially surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) which has high sensitivity down to a single molecule. We employed SERS and NMR to study the AIE emission mechanism and compared experimental results with simulation data to monitor the RIR. Interestingly, we found that intramolecular rotation was also restricted for individual AIE molecules loaded onto SERS substrate surfaces due to the laid-down configuration.

Abstract:Acid vapors emitted by chemical industries pose an increasing threat to public health. The development of a cost-effective sensor for the on-site and real-time monitoring of environmental acid vapor is of great significance. Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) luminogens overcome the aggregation-caused quenching effect and exhibit intense fluorescence when supported in the solid matrices. Silica isoporous membrane (SIM), characterized by vertically ordered nanochannels, holds great promise as a platform for encapsulating AIE luminogens and enabling gas sensing applications. The SIM containing surfactant micelles was prepared on an ITO electrode to obtain the M-SIM/ITO, and Tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)ethylene (TCPE) was employed as the investigated AIE luminogen. Upon application of positive potential, the negatively charged TCPE molecules were driven into the vertically ordered nanochannels, resulting in observable AIE fluorescence. By investigating the electrophoresis conditions such as TCPE charge, nanochannel microenvironment, and driving electric field, the AIE mechanism within the nanochannels was elucidated. The fluorescence of TCPE@M-SIM/ITO exhibited high sensitivity towards acid vapor and displayed reversible changes during the absorption and desorption processes. This behavior can be attributed to the SIM's strong absorption capability towards acid vapor as well as the reversible conversion of acid vapor on TCPE aggregates. This work presented an innovative methodology for studying luminophores within an orderly nanoconfined space, leading to a new perspective on the AIE mechanism.

Abstract:Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) refers to a unique photophysical phenomenon observed for some specific fluorophores, which are faintly or non-emissive in solution but become highly emissive in solid and aggregated states. In the cases of fluorescent probes, AIE active molecules possess some unparallel advantages over their classical counterparts. On one hand, it allows more AIE active molecules to bind to the target analyte, without worrying about the aggregation-induced fluorescence quenching; thus favors fluorescence detection. On the other hand, the feature of drastic enhancement in fluorescence intensity associating with an aggregation event can be used as a method of quantitative detection. In this paper, a series of representative AIE molecules are demonstrated; their applications as biological probes in sensing of protein, DNA, G4, and chiral amines are highlighted; their working principles and features of these molecules are described. Finally, a brief outlook on the design of new AIE-active molecules and the application of AIE-molecules in relevant fields is forwarded.

Abstract:Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) grafted with sodium polystyrenesulfonate (NaPSS) were deposited on an interdigitated gold electrode decorated with a layer of positively charged poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) by a self-assembly method. Then polyaniline (PANI) was in situ polymerized on the surface of the MWNTs to prepare a composite. The structure and morphology of the composite were investigated by Raman spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The electrical responses of the composite to triethylamine vapor of low concentrations were measured at room temperature. It was found that the composite exhibited a linear response to the vapor in the range of 0.5-8 ppm with the highest sensitivity of similar to 80%, which is much higher than that of MWNTs and PANI separately, and an obvious synergetic effect was observed. In addition, the detection limit was as low as the ppb level, and reversible and relatively fast responses (t(90%) similar to 200 s and similar to 10 min for sensing and recovery, respectively) were observed. The sensing characteristics are highly related to the gas responses of PANI, and a sensing mechanism considering the interaction of MWNTs and PANI was proposed.

Abstract:An optical organic vapor sensor array based on colorimetric or fluorescence changes quantified by spectroscopy provides an efficient method for realizing rapid identification and detection of organic vapor, but improving the sensitivity of the optical organic vapor sensor is challenging. Here, AIE/polymer (AIE, ggregation-induced emission) composites into microwires arrays are fabricated as organic vapor sensors with specific recognition and high sensitivity for different vapors using the capillary-bridge-mediated assembly method. Such organic vapor sensor successfully detects organic vapor relying on a swelling-induced fluorescence change of the AIE/polymer composites, combating the unique property of AIE molecules and vapor absorption-induced polymer swelling. A series of AIE/polymer composites into microwires arrays with four different groups on the AIE molecule and four different side chains on the polymer is fabricated to detect four different organic vapors. The mechanism for improved sensitivity of the AIE/polymer composites microwires arrays sensors is the same because of the similar polarity between the group of AIE molecules and the vapor molecules. Gas Sensing Properties of A Composite Composed of Electrospun Poly(Methyl Methacrylate) Nanofibers and in Situ Polymerized Polyaniline

Abstract:Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) nanofibers with different diameters were fabricated by electrospinning and their composites with polyaniline (PANI) were formed by virtue of in situ solution polymerization. The coaxial composite nanofibers so prepared were then transferred to the surface of a gold interdigitated electrode to construct a gas sensor. The structure and morphology of the PANI/PMMA composite fibers were characterized by UV–vis spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy, which indicated that the coaxial nanofibres of PANI emeraldine salt and PMMA were successfully prepared. The electrical responses of the gas sensor based on the composite nanofibres towards triethylamine (TEA) vapors were investigated at room temperature. It was revealed that the sensor showed a sensing magnitude as high as 77 towards TEA vapor of 500ppm. In addition, the responses were linear, reversible and reproducible towards TEA vapors ranging from 20 to 500ppm. The diameters of the electrospun PMMA fibers had an effect on the sensing magnitude of the gas sensor, which is proposed to relate to the difference in the surface-to-volume ratio of the fibers. Furthermore, it was found that the concentration of doping acids only led to changes in resistance of the sensor, but could not affect its sensing characteristics. In contrast, the nature of the doping acids was determinative for the sensing magnitude of the sensor. The gas sensor with toluene sulfonic acid as the doping acid exhibited the highest sensing magnitude, which is explained by taking into account of the sensing mechanism and the interactions of doping acids with TEA vapor.

Abstract:We propose a general approach for the achievement of optical sensors, where ammonia can be rapidly identified and detected through visible fluorescence changes. Here, a tetraphenylethylene derivative with carboxyl groups named TPE-2CA (4,4ʹ-(1,2-Diphenylethene-1,2-diyl) dibenzoyl acid) was applied in the sensor. The AIE (aggregation-induced emission) property of tetraphenylethylene structure provides the samples with excellent luminescent performance in aggregated state. The reaction between carboxyl groups and ammonia causes the shifts on luminescence spectra of the samples. Consequently, different ammonia concentrations can be measured by the time required for luminescent peak blue shifts of samples. Furthermore, we also succeed in growing TPE-2CA micro-spindle structured particles, which nanoparticle structure was instrumental in the miniaturisation and integration of future sensors.

Abstract:A naphthalimide-based fluorescent gelator (N1) containing an alkenyl group has been designed and characterized. This material is able to gelate alcohols via a precipitate-to-gel transformation when triggered with ultrasound for less than 2 min (S-gel). The gelation process in n-propanol was studied by means of absorption, fluorescence, and IR spectra, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images, and X-ray diffraction patterns. The fluorescence intensity of N1 decreased during the gelation process in a linear relationship with the sonication time. The S-gel of N1 could be used to sense aliphatic and aromatic amines by measuring the change in the signal output. For example, the addition of propylamine to the S-gel of N1 resulted in a dramatic enhancement of the fluorescence intensity, accompanied by a gel-to-sol transition. On the contrary, when the S-gel of N1 was treated with aromatic amines such as aniline, fluorescence was quenched and there was no gel collapse. The sensing mechanisms were studied by (1)H NMR, small-angle X-ray scattering, SEM and spectroscopic experiments. It is proposed that isomerization of the alkenyl group of N1 from the trans to cis form occurs when the S-gel is treated with propylamine, resulting in a gel-sol transition. However, the aromatic aniline molecules prefer to insert into the gel networks of N1 via hydrogen-bonding and charge-transfer interactions, maintaining the gel state. As potential applications, testing strips of N1 were prepared to detect aniline.

Abstract:Solid-supported sensors and devices benefit greatly from aggregation-induced emission (AIE) molecular systems, on account of their high emission efficiency in the aggregated state. In this study, we present an AIE luminogen, (E)-1-(((4-acetylphenyl)iminio)methyl)naphthalen-2-olate (AINO), decorated with electron donor-acceptor (D-A) units. It has strong emission at solid state, but undergoes sharp decrease accompanied by slight hypochromatic shift in response to mechanical stimuli. After fumigation with volatile organic compound (VOC), the emission intensity recovers, showing reversible mechanochromic luminescence. Crystal analysis reveals its working mechanism, which is generally ascribed to the formation of coupled π-dimers. Based on the vapochromic recovery of the mechanochromic luminescence; a wearable impregnated cellulose sensor is fabricated, capable of being encapsulated into clothes and gloves. It exhibits remarkable emission change with high visual discrimination when exposed to VOC, affording a low detection down to 17.40 ± 6.91 mg/m3 (4.16 ± 1.77 ppm).

Abstract:Luminescent chromophores armed with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) characteristics can switch their fluorescence sensing by manipulating the aggregation and disaggregation states, leading to high sensitivity and high signal-to-noise ratio sensors. Accordingly, aggregation-induced emission luminogens (AIEgens) have been widely applied to various biosensing, one of which is the gas sensors. Due to the weak signal, easy diffusion, difficult capture, and instability of gas molecules, electrochemical or infrared tests are generally used for detection. However, electrochemical tests have high power consumption, and the environment easily disturbs infrared tests. Fortunately, photochemical sensors utilizing AIE properties can effectively overcome these deficiencies. AIEgens usually exhibit large Stokes shift, good photostability, and low random blinking, suggesting excellent sensing reproducibility and many achievements have been obtained in AIEgens-based gas sensors. This review summarizes the gas detection mechanism of AIEgens, and enumerate the reported gas sensors based on AIEgens. Then a perspective on the field and challenges facing it are elaborated so that researchers can better understand the development status of this field and develop more AIE-type spectroscopic probes with gas-responsive functions. It is expected to greatly enrich the types of gas sensors and promote the development of the application of AIE properties. This review summarizes the fluorescence sensing mechanism and enumerates the reported gas sensors based on aggregation-induced emission luminogens (AIEgens) on different gases. This subject and the challenges in this emerging field are elaborated and the AIEgens design strategies are given so that researchers can better understand its development for more AIE-type spectroscopic probes with gas-responsive functions. image .

Abstract:Aggregation‐induced emission‐based luminogens (AIEgens) have aroused enormous interest due to their unique high fluorescence in a condensed state. To further explore their potential applications, such as chemical monitoring, immobilization of AIE molecules has been widely studied with a variety of supports. Crystalline porous materials, such as metal‐organic frameworks, covalent organic frameworks, hydrogen‐bonded organic framework, and organic cages, demonstrate well‐controlled structures, large surface areas, and promising stabilities, thus providing a perfect platform for AIE agents loading. Outstanding chemical sensing performances are achieved based on these AIE‐active crystalline porous materials, such as high sensitivity, short response time, selective identification, and high recyclability, which provide a new alternative to readily detect various hazardous molecules. Furthermore, precise structures of AIEgen‐based crystalline porous materials offer an easy way to investigate detection mechanisms. This mini‐review will provide a brief overview of AIEgen‐based crystalline porous materials for detection and then address how to improve sensing performances remarkably.
