Abstract:We report the synthesis, characterization, and application of nanobelts and nanowires of ellagic acid for sensing nitroaromatics. The nanostructures are composed of aggregated ellagic acids that are held together by hydrogen bonds and pi-pi interactions. The molecules are oriented with their long axis perpendicular to the nanowire or nanobelt and the pi-pi stacking direction parallel to the longitudinal axis of the wire or belt. Both the conductivity and fluorescence of the nanobelts change selectively in the presence of the vapor of nitrobenzene, a representative nitroaromatic compound, suggesting the nanobelt of ellagic acid may be used for selective detection of explosives.

Abstract:A series of new pyrimidine derivatives modified with carbazole (CM, CMH, CMCl and CMBr) and tert-butyl carbazole (TCM, TCMH, TCMCl and TCMBr) were synthesized. It was found that CM, CMCl, CMBr, TCM, TCMCl and TCMBr without traditional gelation groups could self-assemble into organogels with intense emission. It was found that V-shaped pi-conjugated skeleton and pi-pi interactions were essential for the organogelation. It was interesting that the organogels could be destroyed by adding TFA (trifluoroacetic acid), accompanied with the quenching of the emission on account of the protonation of pyrimidine unit. In particular, the xerogel-based film of TCM emitting strong bluish green light could be used as fluorescent sensor to detect TFA vapor with the decay time and detection limit of 0.6 s and 95 ppb, respectively. Such high performance of the xerogel-based film in fluorescent responsive ability was originated from the high surface-to-volume ratios of nanomaterials and the large space in 3D networks, which were favorable for the adsorption and diffusion of the analytes. We provided new strategy for the design of non-traditional pi-gelators and the fabrication of fluorescent sensory materials with high performance to detect gaseous analytes.

Abstract:Electrospinning is a simple and cost-effective approach for the production of nanofibers and assemblies with controllable structures. In this work, based on sol–gel chemistry and the electrospinning technique, porphyrin-doped nanocomposite fibers with a form of nanofibrous membrane were successfully fabricated without the addition or help of polymers, and were demonstrated as novel fluorescence-based chemosensors for the rapid detection of trace vapor (10 ppb) of explosive. Due to a larger surface area and good gas permeability, these fluorescent nanofibrous membranes exhibit remarkable sensitivity to trace TNT vapor compared to tightly cross-linked silica films, but their sensitivity is strongly dependent upon the morphology and phase aggregation of the used nanofibers. Reducing the diameter and introducing a pore structure into nanofibers can considerably enhance the sensitivity of the resulting materials. The performed experiments suggest that the hierarchically structured, porphyrin-doped nanofibrous membranes are potentially very useful chemosensory materials for detecting trace explosives.

Abstract:o -BzcDPE and p -BzcDPE have been synthesized and used as probes for strong acid detection. The probes contain an aggregation-induced emission luminogens (AIEgens) that is incorporated with benzimidazole-carbazole backbone. Both probes show turn-on green fluorescence with a good contrast in the presence of trace amounts of strong acids in weak acid environment. These probes are not only suitable for visual detection of strong acids, but also have high selectivity, sensitivity, short response time and are capable of quantitative detection of strong acids with a good linear relationship. Concentration of H 2 SO 4 as low as 1 mol% in acetic acid can be differentiated. The fluorescence-turn-on mechanisms are due to protonation on the benzimidazole moiety that have been proved by X-ray crystallographic analysis and NMR spectroscopy.

Abstract:Nanofibers based on phenanthroimidazole derivatives PCC, PDC, and PSC were fabricated by organogelation processes, and their fluorescence sensory properties towards acid were investigated. It was found that the emission of PCC in the nanofiber-based film could be quenched significantly upon exposure to gaseous TFA due to the formation of protonated PCC, in which ICT (intramolecular charge transfer) would occur. On the other hand, TFA vapor led to the emitting colors of PDC and PSC in the nanofiber-based films to turn to yellow and green from sky blue and blue, respectively. Additionally, we found that the decay times of PCC were 0.1s and 1.9s in probing the saturated vapor of TFA in nanofiber-based film and in spin-coated film, respectively. The results suggested that the high surface-to-volume ratio and large interspace in the nanofiber-based networks favored the enhanced adsorption, accumulation, and diffusion of gaseous molecules, resulting in such a high performance.

Abstract:The probing of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is critical and challenging in biotechnology and environmental monitoring. Incorporation of luminescent moieties into metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has produced many unique luminescent sensors for probing different VOCs. The emissions of most MOF sensors are based mainly on the single transitions of luminescent moieties, so the luminescence readouts are only predominant for some special VOCs. We use a natural amino acid derivative as the luminescent moiety to result in a lamellar coordination polymer, and further embed luminescent dye molecules in the crystal matrix to result in a luminescent dye@MOF sensor. The composite sensor exhibits excellent sensitivity for decoding different VOCs with clearly differentiable fluorescence emission by tuning the energy transfer efficiency from the organic ligand to the dye moieties. The composite luminescent sensor is self-calibrated, and much more stable and instantaneous than other more widely explored luminescent sensors.

Abstract:A newly developed electrospun nanofibrous film sensor based on tetrakis(4-methoxylphenyl) porphyrin (TMOPP) and polystyrene showed favorable fluorescence sensing performance towards four nitroaromatic explosives. The morphology of nanofibers was uniform with diameters of 300-400 nm. The sensing nanofibrous film possessed satisfactory reproducibility amongst three batches, reversibility with loss of sensing signal only similar to 10% after six quenching-regeneration cycles, and selectivity to give minimal response to common interferents. Using amine modification as a new approach and by introducing a porogen, the nanofibrous film sensor exhibited a highly sensitive response towards parts-per-billion levels of 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene vapor, and parts-per-trillion levels of picric acid vapor, respectively. This work provides a facile and promising strategy to construct portable optical devices for nitroaromatic explosive detection.

Abstract:Luminescent hydrogels have received considerable attention in the application of sensors. Nitroaromatics are harmful to human health and can be carcinogenic. Some skin allergies and central nervous system injuries may also be attributed to the over exposure to nitroaromatics. Thus, nitroaromatics sensor with fast detection and low detection limit is highly desirable. Herein, novel tough hydrogels have been prepared by introducing hydrogen bonds and covalent bonds into the interpenetrating networks of modified chitosan and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) via frozen-thawing induced chemical cross-linking. The synthesized hydrogels exhibit high mechanical strength (0.23 MPa tensile strength at 140% tensile strain, 1.0 MPa compressive strength at 80% compressive strain). Strong green emission was realized by energy transfer from the modified chitosan to Tb3+ via the so-called “antenna effect.” The prepared luminescent hydrogels show an excellent detection effect on nitroaromatic compounds and its detection limit can reach ppm-level. The hydrogels also exhibit good reversibility and a fast “off–on” fluorescence switching process. This work may open up a new way for the development of stable, rapid, and reusable sensors for the detection of harmful nitroaromatics.

Abstract:Solid-supported sensors and devices benefit greatly from aggregation-induced emission (AIE) molecular systems, on account of their high emission efficiency in the aggregated state. In this study, we present an AIE luminogen, (E)-1-(((4-acetylphenyl)iminio)methyl)naphthalen-2-olate (AINO), decorated with electron donor-acceptor (D-A) units. It has strong emission at solid state, but undergoes sharp decrease accompanied by slight hypochromatic shift in response to mechanical stimuli. After fumigation with volatile organic compound (VOC), the emission intensity recovers, showing reversible mechanochromic luminescence. Crystal analysis reveals its working mechanism, which is generally ascribed to the formation of coupled π-dimers. Based on the vapochromic recovery of the mechanochromic luminescence; a wearable impregnated cellulose sensor is fabricated, capable of being encapsulated into clothes and gloves. It exhibits remarkable emission change with high visual discrimination when exposed to VOC, affording a low detection down to 17.40 ± 6.91 mg/m3 (4.16 ± 1.77 ppm).

Abstract:Volatile organic compounds (VOCs), often invisible but potentially harmful, are prevalent in industrial and laboratory settings, posing health risks. Detecting VOCs in real-time with high sensitivity and low detection limits is crucial for human health and safety. The optical sensor, utilizing the gasochromic properties of sensing materials, offers a promising way of achieving rapid responses in ambient environments. In this study, we investigated the heterostructure of SnO2/WO3 nanoparticles and employed it as the primary detection component. Using the electrospinning technique, we fabricated a sensing fiber containing Ag NPs, poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), and SnO2/WO3 (PMMA-Ag-SnO2/WO3) for acetone vapor detection. Following activation via UV/ozone treatment, we observed charge migration between WO3 and SnO2, resulting in a substantial generation of superoxide radicals on SnO2 nanoparticles. This phenomenon facilitates structural deformation of the fiber and alters the oxidation state of tungsten ions, ultimately leading to a significant change in extinction when exposed to acetone vapor. As a result, PMMA-Ag-SnO2/WO3 fiber achieves a detection limit of 100 ppm and a response time of 1.0 min for acetone detection. These findings represent an advancement in the development of sensitive and selective VOC sensing devices.

Abstract:We propose a design for a highly sensitive volatile organic compounds (VOCs) sensor based on evanescent wave coupling of a side-polished optical fiber. The surface of the side-polished optical fiber coupled with a coated solvatochromic dye has charge-transfer (CT) properties. In the proposed model, the application of these optical properties and the novel solvatochromic dye helped overcome problems caused by limited sensitivity, selectivity, and dynamic range that are encountered in typical gas sensors. The different polarities of the VOCs cause changes in the effective refractive index of the sensing membrane owing to CT properties. This can lead to a change in the resonance wavelength of the side-polished optical fiber. To ascertain the effectiveness of the sensor, five VOCs dimethylamine, acetic acid, toluene, benzene, and ethanol were tested, and the enhance in sensitivity was analyzed for varying concentrations. According to the results, the proposed gas sensor showed high sensitivity and resolution.

Abstract:The oligo(p‐phenylenevinylene) series displays notable solvatochromism, acidochromism, and reversible color alterations under trifluoroacetic acid and triethylamine vapors. With robust thermal stability and protonation‐triggered charge transfer, these molecules are ideal for volatile acid detection, data security, and recording technologies. Their visible color shifts and excellent reversibility underscore their promising utility across diverse applications. Stimuli‐responsive materials based on π‐conjugated donor‐acceptor systems have great potential for sensing applications in solution and solid state. The photophysical properties of an oligo(p‐phenylenevinylene) series consisting of five push‐pull type molecules were systematically investigated to switch their absorption and emission properties by using trifluoroacetic acid as a specific external analyte. During the trifluoracetic acid sensing, the terminal pyridine units of the molecules undergo the protonation and lead to the broader absorption band at a longer wavelength region owing to the π‐π* characteristics of molecules. Upon exposing solid samples to the trifluoracetic acid vapors, the initial color of solid samples changed from yellow to orange for three‐ring system‐based molecules and brick red to wine red color for five‐ring system‐based molecules with the shifting of emission band to the longer wavelength region. Furthermore, exposing the trifluoracetic acid‐fumed solid samples to triethylamine vapors, the color of the solid samples reverted to their original colors and emission properties. The DFT analysis indicated a decreased energy band gap for the protonated molecules compared to the neutral molecules, suggesting a redshift in both the absorption and emission spectra of the protonated molecules. Thus, all the molecules of an Oligo(p‐phenylenevinylene) series can be utilized effectively for volatile acid detection.

Abstract:An electrospun nanofibrous explosive sensor was first constructed based on a newly developed fluorescent conjugated polymer P containing heteroatom polycyclic units. Electrospinning by doping polymer P as a fluorescent probe in a polystyrene supporting matrix afforded a fluorescence nanofibrous film with unique porous structures, and effectively avoided the aggregation of polymer P. The novel explosive sensor exhibited stable fluorescence property, satisfactory reversibility with less than 5% loss of signal intensity after four quenching–regeneration cycles, and good reproducibility among three batches with a relative standard deviation of 2.8%. Such fabricated sensor also showed remarkable sensitivity toward a series of trace nitroaromatic explosive vapors, including picric acid (parts-per-trillion level) and 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene vapor (parts-per-billion level), as well as good selectivity with less than 10% response to typical interferents. Therefore, the present strategy extends the application of different kinds of conjugated polymers for the construction of optical chemosensors.

Abstract:Fast and effective volatile acid trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) sensing is urgently demanded environmental safety. Herein, a novel "turn-on" fluorescent chemosensor of tetraphenylethylene (TPE)-planarized bis-Schiff-base was designed and facilely synthesized. The bi-Schiff-based TPE derivative contains two symmetrical terminal naphthalene rings making it nonluminescence. While it exhibited obvious "turn on" fluorescent emission and a real-time visual color changes upon TFA both in solution and vapor phases, respectively. The test paper color change was reversible by the fuming of NH3. Photoluminescence (PL), ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) absorption spectra and density functional theory (DFT) calculations were employed to investigate the acidichromism mechanism. The fluorescent sensor shows high selectivity and sensitivity for TFA detection. The design of TPE-planarized provide a new strategy for AIE-active "turn-on/off" fluorescence sensors.

Abstract:A new method for fabricating fluorescent nanofibers as sensing materials was developed via the electrospinning technique using fluorophore-doped polymers. Fluorescent nanofibers with diameters in the range 200-600 nm were produced with fluorophores dispersed uniformly in the matrix. Sensing nanofibers with secondary porous structures were further achieved by introducing a porogen or deacetylation treament as a new approach, exhibiting unique morphologies with intra-fiber pores and obviously improved quenching sensitivity. Methyl violet was used as a model to investigate the sensing performance of a nanofiber membrane composed of cellulose acetate doped with 9-chloromethylanthracene. This work provides a simple and applicable strategy for the fabrication of sensing materials for optical sensor devices.

Abstract:Although it is widely used in industry and food products, formic acid can be dangerous owing to its corrosive properties. Accurate determination of formic acid would not only benefit its qualified uses but also be an effective way to avoid corrosion or injury from inhalation, swallowing, or touching. Herein, we present a nanofilm-based fluorescent sensor for formic acid vapor detection with a wide response range, fast response speed, and high sensitivity and selectivity. The nanofilm was synthesized at a humid air/dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) interface through dynamic covalent condensation between two typically designed building blocks, de-tert-butyl calix[4]arene-tetrahydrazide (CATH) and 4,4′,4″,4‴-(ethene-1,1,2,2-tetrayl)tetra-benzaldehyde (ETBA). The as-prepared nanofilm is uniform, flexible, fluorescent, and photochemically stable. The thickness and fluorescence intensity of the nanofilm can be facilely adjusted by varying the concentration of the building blocks and the sensing performance of the nanofilm can be optimized accordingly. Based on the nanofilm, a fluorescent sensor with a wide response range (4.4 ppt–4400 ppm) for real-time and online detection of formic acid vapor was built. With the sensor, a trace amount (0.01%) of formic acid in petroleum ether (60–90 °C) can be detected within 3 s. Besides, fluorescence quenching of the nanofilm by formic acid vapor can be visualized.
