Abstract:In this study, a nanobiosensor for detecting explosives was developed, in which the peptide was synthesized with trinitrotoluene (TNT)-specific sequence and immobilized on nanodevice by Au–S covalent linkage, and the nanocup arrays were fabricated by nanoimprint and deposited with Au nanoparticles to generate localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR). The device was used to monitor slight change from specific binding of 2,4,6-TNT to the peptide. With high refractive index sensing of ~10 4 nm/RIU, the nanocup device can detect the binding of TNT at concentration as low as 3.12 × 10 −7 mg mL −1 by optical transmission spectrum modulated by LSPR. The nanosensor is also able to distinguish TNT from analogs of 2,4-dinitrotoluene and 3-nitrotoluene in the mixture with great selectivity. The peptide-based nanosensor provides novel approaches to design versatile biosensor assays by LSPR for chemical molecules.

Abstract:A label-free optical biosensor was constructed with biofunctionalized graphene oxide (GO) for specific detection of 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT). By chemically binding TNT-specific peptides with GO, the biosensor gained unique optoelectronic properties and high biological sensitivity, with transducing bimolecular bonding into optical signals. Through UV absorption detection, increasing absorbance responses could be observed in presence of TNT at different concentrations, as low as 4.40×10(-9) mM, and showed dose-dependence and stable behavior. Specific responses of the biosensor were verified with the corporation of 2,6-dinitrotoluene (DNT), which had similar molecular structure to TNT. Thus, with high sensitivity and selectivity, the biosensor provided a convenient approach for detection of explosives as miniaturizing and integrating devices.

Abstract:An electrospun nanofibrous explosive sensor was first constructed based on a newly developed fluorescent conjugated polymer P containing heteroatom polycyclic units. Electrospinning by doping polymer P as a fluorescent probe in a polystyrene supporting matrix afforded a fluorescence nanofibrous film with unique porous structures, and effectively avoided the aggregation of polymer P. The novel explosive sensor exhibited stable fluorescence property, satisfactory reversibility with less than 5% loss of signal intensity after four quenching–regeneration cycles, and good reproducibility among three batches with a relative standard deviation of 2.8%. Such fabricated sensor also showed remarkable sensitivity toward a series of trace nitroaromatic explosive vapors, including picric acid (parts-per-trillion level) and 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene vapor (parts-per-billion level), as well as good selectivity with less than 10% response to typical interferents. Therefore, the present strategy extends the application of different kinds of conjugated polymers for the construction of optical chemosensors.

Abstract:We report the synthesis, characterization, and application of triphenylene nano/microwires for sensing nitroaromatics. The fluorescence of these wires is dependent on the size of the wires, which can be controlled by heating temperature and time. The cross optical polarized microscopy result shows a birefringent crystal structure of the triphenylene microwires. Fluorescence imaging shows that the crystalline triphenylene nano/microwires may be used as a waveguide material. Both the conductivity and fluorescence of the crystalline nano/microwires change selectively in the presence of vapor of nitrobenzene, a representative nitroaromatic, suggesting that the nano/microwires of triphenylene may be used for selective detection of explosives.

Abstract:A newly developed electrospun nanofibrous film sensor based on tetrakis(4-methoxylphenyl) porphyrin (TMOPP) and polystyrene showed favorable fluorescence sensing performance towards four nitroaromatic explosives. The morphology of nanofibers was uniform with diameters of 300-400 nm. The sensing nanofibrous film possessed satisfactory reproducibility amongst three batches, reversibility with loss of sensing signal only similar to 10% after six quenching-regeneration cycles, and selectivity to give minimal response to common interferents. Using amine modification as a new approach and by introducing a porogen, the nanofibrous film sensor exhibited a highly sensitive response towards parts-per-billion levels of 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene vapor, and parts-per-trillion levels of picric acid vapor, respectively. This work provides a facile and promising strategy to construct portable optical devices for nitroaromatic explosive detection.

Abstract:In this work, we develop a sequential self-assembly approach to fabricate interpenetrated binary supramolecular nanofibers consisting of carbazole oligomer 1-cobalt(II) (1-Co2+) coordination nanofibers and oligomer 2 nanofibers for the sensitive detection of six classes of explosives. When exposed to peroxide explosives (e.g., H2O2), Co2+ in 1-Co2+ coordination nanofibers can be reduced to Co+ that can transfer an electron to the excited 2 nanofibers and thereby quench their fluorescence. On the other hand, when exposed to the other five classes of explosives, the excited 2 nanofibers can transfer an electron to explosives to quench their fluorescence. On the basis of the distinct fluorescence quenching mechanisms, six classes of explosives can be sensitively detected. Herein, we provide a new strategy to design broad-band fluorescence sensors for a rich identification of threats.

Abstract:Electrospinning is a simple and cost-effective approach for the production of nanofibers and assemblies with controllable structures. In this work, based on sol–gel chemistry and the electrospinning technique, porphyrin-doped nanocomposite fibers with a form of nanofibrous membrane were successfully fabricated without the addition or help of polymers, and were demonstrated as novel fluorescence-based chemosensors for the rapid detection of trace vapor (10 ppb) of explosive. Due to a larger surface area and good gas permeability, these fluorescent nanofibrous membranes exhibit remarkable sensitivity to trace TNT vapor compared to tightly cross-linked silica films, but their sensitivity is strongly dependent upon the morphology and phase aggregation of the used nanofibers. Reducing the diameter and introducing a pore structure into nanofibers can considerably enhance the sensitivity of the resulting materials. The performed experiments suggest that the hierarchically structured, porphyrin-doped nanofibrous membranes are potentially very useful chemosensory materials for detecting trace explosives.

Abstract:Conjugated polymer-grafted silica nanoparticles were prepared by Sonogashira coupling reaction involving a two-step procedure. The resulting conjugated polymer-grafted silica nanoparticles were characterized by infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, transmission electron microscopy, and absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy. The conjugated polymer-grafted silica nanoparticles are highly fluorescent, and the fluorescent response of the nanoparticles of different size towards electron-deficient trinitrotoluene (TNT) was studied by examining how the steady state fluorescence intensity changes with the concentration of TNT. The conjugated polymer-grafted silica nanoparticles show high sensitivity toward TNT, with a detection limit down to 1μM.

Abstract:A series of new pyrimidine derivatives modified with carbazole (CM, CMH, CMCl and CMBr) and tert-butyl carbazole (TCM, TCMH, TCMCl and TCMBr) were synthesized. It was found that CM, CMCl, CMBr, TCM, TCMCl and TCMBr without traditional gelation groups could self-assemble into organogels with intense emission. It was found that V-shaped pi-conjugated skeleton and pi-pi interactions were essential for the organogelation. It was interesting that the organogels could be destroyed by adding TFA (trifluoroacetic acid), accompanied with the quenching of the emission on account of the protonation of pyrimidine unit. In particular, the xerogel-based film of TCM emitting strong bluish green light could be used as fluorescent sensor to detect TFA vapor with the decay time and detection limit of 0.6 s and 95 ppb, respectively. Such high performance of the xerogel-based film in fluorescent responsive ability was originated from the high surface-to-volume ratios of nanomaterials and the large space in 3D networks, which were favorable for the adsorption and diffusion of the analytes. We provided new strategy for the design of non-traditional pi-gelators and the fabrication of fluorescent sensory materials with high performance to detect gaseous analytes.

Abstract:Three different polymorphic crystalline structures, including microbelts and flowerlike supernanostructures, were obtained via a simple solution process by utilizing different solvents from an oligoarene derivative. Explosive chemosensors based on these self-assembled organic crystalline nanostructures were successfully fabricated. The differences in the structures on the microscopic level and in the film morphologies led to dramatic enhancements of the explosive detection speed. With the evolution of structures from the netted 1D microbelts to the flowerlike supernanostructures, the detection speed of the chemosensors for DNT and TNT was improved by more than 700 times. Our discovery demonstrates that the morphology control through self-assembly provides a new platform to utilize organic crystalline microstructures for chemosensors, optoelectronics, biosensors and bioelectronics, and so forth.

Abstract:Electrospun nanofibrous film doped with it fluorescent conjugated polymer P was developed as a sensory device for detection of the explosive 2,4-dinitrotoluene (DNT). Polymer P obtained through a Sonogashira cross-coupling polymerization showed high affinity and excellent fluorescence quenching property toward electro-deficient compound DNT in solution. A versatile and effective electrospinning technique, which effectively reduced aggregation and fluorescence self-quenching of the conjugated polymers in thin film by the traditional spin-casting, was successfully employed to develop explosive-sensing nanofibrous devices. By doping with polystyrene as supporting matrix and subsequent electrospinning, the obtained fluorescent nanofibrous film exhibited remarkable sensitivity to trace DNT vapor due to a large surface area-to-volume ratio and unique porous structure. The sensitivity of the device was further improved by introducing secondary pores into the nanofibers through addition of a surfactant, sodium dodecyl sulfate, as it porogen agent. This strategy can provide a platform for other conjugated polymers using electrospinning technology to construct new optical chemo- and biosensors.

Abstract:Fabrication of highly stable, reversible, and efficient portable sensors for the detection of explosives for safety and security is challenging due to the robustness of the currently available detection tools, limiting their mass deployment to the explosion prone areas. This paper reports a new direction towards the sensing of nitro- and peroxide-based explosives using highly stable rare-earth-doped BaWO4 nanofibers with remarkable sensitivity and reversibility. BaWO4 nanofibers doped with Tb3+ and Eu3+ ions are fabricated through a sol-gel electrospinning process, and their emission characteristics and application as a fluorescent probe for the sensing of 2-nitrotoluene and H2O2, explosive taggants representing a broad class of explosives, are studied in detail. Scheelite structured BaWO4 nanofibers exhibit excellent luminescence characteristics, and the rare-earth ion doping in the polycrystalline BaWO4 nanofibers is tailored to achieve blue, green, red, and white light emissions. These nanofibers are extremely sensitive to 2-nitrotoluene and H2O2 with rapid response time, and sensitivity is observed within the range of 1-400 ppb and 1-10 ppm, towards 2-nitrotoluene and H2O2, respectively. The fluorescence quenching of BaWO4 nanofibers in the presence of 2-nitrotoluene and H2O2 is exponential with the quenching constants up to 1.73 x 10(6) and 2.73 x 10(4) L mol(-1), respectively, which are significantly higher than those of most of the fluorescent probes based on metal-organic frameworks and conjugated organic materials. After exposing to 2-nitrotoluene, the luminescence of the nanofibers is retained completely upon heating at 120 degrees C for 10 min and the sensory response is retained as fresh nanofibers, and currently available fluorescent explosive sensors could not achieve such a recovery. The high sensitivity and selectivity of scalable rare-earth-doped BaWO4 nanofibers provide a new platform for the simultaneous detection of two classes of explosives.
Ultrasensitive Detection of Aliphatic Nitro-Organics Based on “Turn-On” Fluorescent Sensor Array

Abstract:The broad class of explosives includes nitro aromatics as well as challenging aliphatic nitro-organics whose detection is important from counter-terrorism and national security perspectives.Here we report a turn-on fluorescent sensor array based on aggregation-induced emission(AIE)fluorophores as receptors.To achieve a good sensing system with fast response,good sensitivity and low detection limit,three receptors with abundant chemical diversities for target analytes were synthesized.The turn-on response of the individual receptor showed highly variable and cross-reactive analyte-dependent changes in fluorescence.The excellent ability to identify a variety of explosives,especially the challenging aliphatic nitro-organics(2,3-dimethyl-2,3-dinitrobutane(DMNB),1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazinane(RDX),cyclotetramethylene tetranitramine(HMX)and entaerythritol tetranitrate(PETN)),was demonstrated in qualitative and quantitative analyses with 100%accuracy.The fluorescence signal amplification in the presence of explosives allows for application of these receptors in a sensor microarray suitable for high-throughput screening.These results suggested that the cross-reactive sensor array based on AIE fluorophores could find a wide range of applications for sensing various analytes or complex mixtures.
