Abstract:We report highly versatile gas sensors using polymer film coated optical micro/nanofibers (MNFs). Based on the evanescent wave absorption of the doped acid-base indicator, polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) microflow cell encapsulated MNFs are used for humidity and NH3 sensing with fast response, high sensitivity and large dynamic range. The compact and flexible sensing scheme shown here may be attractive for fast detection in physical, chemical, and medical applications with high sensitivity and small footprint.

Abstract:Sensing technology is the key of intelligent packaging. A variety of different sensing systems for indicating freshness through intelligent packaging have been presented. Polyaniline (PANI) can change its color reversibly through the acid-base reaction with reactive compounds and has been widely used in different kinds of sensors. However, because PANI is insoluble in common organic solvents, this limits its practical usage in many applications. In this work, a highly stable polyaniline-poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (PANI:PSS) colloid has been developed as a facile colorimetric sensor of volatile amines. The results showed the PANI:PSS colloid is quite sensitive to changes in pH. When PANI:PSS colloids were homogenously deposited on filter paper, the paper are used as a sensor to detect triethylamine (TEA) vapor. The green color of the test paper changed to blue at a TEA concentration as low as 188 ppm.

Abstract:One of the challenges for optical micro/nanofiber (MNF) gas sensors is reliably measuring small volumes of samples with low detection limit and fast response. Herein, we introduce a concept of utilizing functional film coated optical MNFs for gas sensing. As a proof-of-concept, when crystal violet (CV) doped Nafion film was used for humidity sensing, the sensor exhibited nearly linear response to humidity in the range of 30%-100% relative humidity (RH), with a response time of similar to 150 ms and a resolution of 03% RH. Also, highly sensitive ammonia sensing was demonstrated by using bromothymol blue (BTB) doped polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) film, achieving a detection limit down to 30 ppb. This concept enhances the sensors' stability by enclosing the MNF completely with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) microflow cell and functional film rather than suspending MNFs in a conventional large volume flow chamber. The higher sensitivity and lower detection limit are attributed to the gas-induced color changes in the pH indicator doped polymer film which improve evanescent absorption significantly. The shorter response time is due to the drastically reduced diffusional pathlength of gas by the thin layer of polymer film. Compared with the delicate surface coating technique, its simple fabrication procedure and low production cost boost the development fiber-optic sensing technology. We anticipate that the study is a starting point for practical applications of the MNF sensors.
Micro-Electromechanical Acoustic Resonator Coated With Polyethyleneimine Nanofibers For The Detection Of Formaldehyde Vapor

Abstract:We demonstrate a promising strategy to combine the micro-electromechanical film bulk acoustic resonator and the nanostructured sensitive fibers for the detection of low-concentration formaldehyde vapor. The polyethyleneimine nanofibers were directly deposited on the resonator surface by a simple electrospinning method. The film bulk acoustic resonator working at 4.4 GHz acted as a sensitive mass loading platform and the three-dimensional structure of nanofibers provided a large specific surface area for vapor adsorption and diffusion. The ultra-small mass change induced by the absorption of formaldehyde molecules onto the amine groups in polyethyleneimine was detected by measuring the frequency downshift of the film bulk acoustic resonator. The proposed sensor exhibits a fast, reversible and linear response towards formaldehyde vapor with an excellent selectivity. The gas sensitivity and the detection limit were 1.216 kHz/ppb and 37 ppb, respectively. The study offers a great potential for developing sensitive, fast-response and portable sensors for the detection of indoor air pollutions.

Abstract:Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) grafted with sodium polystyrenesulfonate (NaPSS) were deposited on an interdigitated gold electrode decorated with a layer of positively charged poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) by a self-assembly method. Then polyaniline (PANI) was in situ polymerized on the surface of the MWNTs to prepare a composite. The structure and morphology of the composite were investigated by Raman spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The electrical responses of the composite to triethylamine vapor of low concentrations were measured at room temperature. It was found that the composite exhibited a linear response to the vapor in the range of 0.5-8 ppm with the highest sensitivity of similar to 80%, which is much higher than that of MWNTs and PANI separately, and an obvious synergetic effect was observed. In addition, the detection limit was as low as the ppb level, and reversible and relatively fast responses (t(90%) similar to 200 s and similar to 10 min for sensing and recovery, respectively) were observed. The sensing characteristics are highly related to the gas responses of PANI, and a sensing mechanism considering the interaction of MWNTs and PANI was proposed.

Abstract:In this work, a series of molecules TPE-PA-n (n = 3-11) were designed with classic aggregation-induced emission (AIE) 1,1,2,2-tetraphenylethene (TPE) for self-assembled monolayers (SAMs), which are applied for the detection of trace nitroaromatic compound (NAC) explosives. Phosphoric acid that acts as an anchor is used to connect with TPE through alkyl chains of various lengths. It is found that the alkyl chains play a role in pulling TPE luminogens to aggregate for light emission, which can affect the fluorescence and sensing performance of the SAMs. Ulteriorly, a model is built to explore the influence of the alkyl chain length on the device performance, which is determined by the three effects of the alkyl chain: flexibility, the coupling effect, and the odd-even effect. By comparison, the functional molecules with the chain length of 8 were finally selected and further applied for NAC sensors. By means of fluorescence spectra, the SAM sensor was proved to have good stability, reversibility, selectivity, and sensitivity, and its detection limits for trinitrotoluene, dinitrotoluene, and nitrobenzene were 1.2, 6.0, and 35.7 ppm, respectively. This work provides new ideas for the design and preparation of flexible sensors for trace NAC detection with high performance, low cost, and easy operation.

Aggregation-Induced Emission Molecule Microwire-Based Specific Organic Vapor Detector through Structural Modification

Abstract:An optical organic vapor sensor array based on colorimetric or fluorescence changes quantified by spectroscopy provides an efficient method for realizing rapid identification and detection of organic vapor, but improving the sensitivity of the optical organic vapor sensor is challenging. Here, AIE/polymer (AIE, ggregation-induced emission) composites into microwires arrays are fabricated as organic vapor sensors with specific recognition and high sensitivity for different vapors using the capillary-bridge-mediated assembly method. Such organic vapor sensor successfully detects organic vapor relying on a swelling-induced fluorescence change of the AIE/polymer composites, combating the unique property of AIE molecules and vapor absorption-induced polymer swelling. A series of AIE/polymer composites into microwires arrays with four different groups on the AIE molecule and four different side chains on the polymer is fabricated to detect four different organic vapors. The mechanism for improved sensitivity of the AIE/polymer composites microwires arrays sensors is the same because of the similar polarity between the group of AIE molecules and the vapor molecules. Abstract:High selectivity to specific analyte is essential for chemical sensors but difficult to achieve. For most chemical sensors, although the response to the target analyte can be more significant than interference analytes, they still show obvious responses to the interference analytes. Here, highly selective chemical sensors are developed with negligible responses to other interference vapors. Instead of the widely investigated electronically conductive metal-organic frameworks (EC-MOFs), ionically conductive MOFs (IC-MOFs) are used as the sensing materials, and the unique interaction between the ion charge carrier and the analyte is utilized to achieve high sensing selectivity. Through the modulation of the metal nodes (Cu, Co, Ni, Zn, Mg) and organic ligands (H2TCPP, H2THPP, H4BTEC), sensor arrays based on a set of IC-MOFs are fabricated and achieve highly selective detection toward volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs). H2S and CH3SH can be selectively detected at concentrations down to 1 ppb and 1 ppm, respectively. The facile preparation and low cost endow the device with disposability. These results suggest new approaches for the development of highly selective chemical sensors.

Abstract:Amines play vital roles in agricultural, pharmaceutical, and food industries, but volatile amine vapors are serious threats to human health. Previously reported fluorescent sensors for amine vapor detection usually suffer from aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) effect and need to be dispersed in solution or matrix materials. Herein, based on the fluorogen of 2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)quinazolin-4(3H)-one (HPQ) with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties, we have developed a fluorescent sensor HPQ-Ac for light-up detection of amine vapors through aminolysis reaction. The portable HPQ-Ac sensor can be easily prepared by directly depositing on filter paper, and it can only light up via exposure to amine vapors among various volatile organic compounds. Taking advantage of its portability and high sensitivity for amine vapors, HPQ-Ac sensor can also be used for food spoilage detection and fluorescent invisible ink.

Abstract:Polyamine plays the important role in human body. Here, the convenient synthesis of AIE material 2-(pyren-1-ylmethylene) malononitrile (L) was capable of fluorescent recognition for 1, 3-diaminopropane in gas-liquid-solid three-phase with good selectivity and high sensitivity. And it's interesting that other amines did not interfere with the recognition between L and 1,3-diaminopropane. The proposed sensing mechanism was supported by Job's plots, 1H NMR titration, FT-IR, electron-spray ionization, and density functional theory calculation analysis. The limits of detection were estimated as 1.34×10−8 M. The self-made test strips and silica gel plates realized the easy detection of 1, 3-diaminopropane. L-1, 3-diaminopropane possessed the potential for fingerprint recognition based on AIEE in the silica gel plates developed within this study. Notably, bioimaging in seeds, plant tissues, Caenorhabditis elegans, and mice revealed that L could be suitable as an effective sensor for detecting 1, 3-diaminopropane in living systems with the strong "turn-on" fluorescence. Importantly, L showed good biocompatibility and could effectively recognize 1, 3-diaminopropane and reveal its location with colored AIEE fluorescence in HeLa cells.

Abstract:In this work, we have prepared polymeric self-assembled monolayer (SAM) sensors for the detection of trace volatile nitro-aromatic compound (NAC) explosives by fluorescence quenching. A typical aggregation-induced emission (AIE) luminogen 1,1,2,2-tetraphenylethene (TPE) polymerizes into PTPE to increase the fluorescence intensity in the SAMs, and the phosphoric acid acts as the anchor group to form stable covalent bonds with the Al2O3 substrate. This design takes advantage of the high sensitivity and good stability of SAMs, and high fluorescence intensity, and "wire effect" of the conjugated polymers. The polymeric SAM sensors have been prepared on the Al2O3 silicon wafer and testing paper. Both of them show good response speed, reversibility, selectivity, and sensitivity. The detection limits down to 0.07 ppm, 0.35 ppm, and 4.11 ppm for TNT, DNB, and NB, respectively, are achieved on the inorganic testing paper. Furthermore, due to the higher fluorescence intensity by interlacing and overlapping of fibers, the detection of the paper can be distinguished by naked eyes even with a low-power handheld UV lamp, which provides an experimental basis for the development of cheap and easy trace NAC explosive sensors.This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:In this work, based on the fluorescence changes of Zn-TCPE we report a novel strategy for perceiving harmful amines migrated from packaging printing inks. In an aqueous solution, Zn-TCPE fluorescence is quenched by water molecule coordination. However, after the introduction of nitrogen heterocyclic, aromatic, and aliphatic amines, respectively, competitive coordination substitution and electrostatic interactions with amino groups inhibit the movement of the AIE-active organic ligand, leading to the re-enhancement of fluorescence. Fluorescence restart enables the highly sensitive and selective detection of potentially harmful amines with low detection limits of 18.7-68.5 nM. So far, the methods for sensitive sensing of amines based on MOFs destruction-triggered fluorescence "turn-off-on" have seldom been reported up to now. Compared with traditional methods, this sensing method with fluorescence "turn-off-on" is simpler, faster, and more sensitive. The detection results of amines in the actual sample reveal that the fluorescent probe has good application prospects.

Abstract:A nanostructured complex, polyethyleneimine (PEI) functionalized polyamide 6 (PA 6) (PEI-PA 6) nano-fiber/net (NFN), is developed as a novel sensing coating on quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) for highly sensitive formaldehyde detection. The NFN structured substrate comprising common electrospun nanofibers and two-dimensional (2D) spider-web-like nano-nets fabricated by a facile electro-spinning/netting (ESN) process, exhibit large specific surface area, high porosity and large stacking density, which make them optimal candidates for sensing applications. The responses of the sensors in response to formaldehyde were analyzed in terms of PA 6 NFN membranes morphologies, PA 6 substrate and sensing PEI coating loads, and the comparison with nanoporous fibers. Experimental results show that this new PEI-PA 6 NFN nanostructure based QCM sensor exhibits excellent formaldehyde sensing performances in terms of remarkably low detection limit (50 ppb), rapid response, superior selectivity and good reproducibility. We expect the highly sensitive and robust NFN-based QCM sensor may serve as a practical and powerful tool for gas sensing and chemical analysis.

Abstract:Ammonia is an important indicator among environmental monitoring parameters. In this work, thin-core fiber Mach-Zehnder interferometer deposited with poly (acrylic acid) (PAA), poly (allyamine hydrochloride) (PAH) and single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs-COOH) sensing film for the detection of ammonia gas has been presented. The thin-core fiber modal interferometer was made by fusion splicing a small section of thin-core fiber (TCF) between two standard single mode fibers (SMF). A beam propagation method (BPM) is employed for the design of proposed interferometer and numerical simulation. Based on the simulation results, interferometer with a length of 2 cm of thin-core fiber is fabricated and experimentally studied. (PAH/PAA)2 + [PAH/(PAA + SWCNTs-COOH)]8 film is deposited on the outer surface of thin-core fiber via layer-by-layer (LbL) self-assembly technique. The gas sensor coated with (PAH/PAA)2 + [PAH/(PAA + SWCNTs-COOH)]8 film towards NH3 gas exposure at concentrations range from 1 to 960 ppm are analyzed and the sensing capability is demonstrated by optical spectrum analyzer (OSA). Experimental results show that the characteristic wavelength shift has an approximately linear relationship in the range 1–20 ppm, which is in accordance with the numerical simulation. Thus, this paper reveals the potential application of this sensor in monitoring low concentration NH3 gas.
