Abstract:<p>Despite of increasing popularity, atria enclosed with large-area glass façades face challenges of fluctuate thermal comfort and higher energy consumption induced by air infiltration during winter, especially in the severe cold region. However, there is a lack of effective schemes and data of measurement and simulation. To bridge the gap, the present study exploited the dynamic energy balance method for continuous monitoring of total infiltration rate. The measured air change rate of the study atrium ranged between 0.04 h-1 and 0.1 h-1. The infiltration heat loss reached 415.2 MJ a day, accounting for 15.3-27.8% of the total energy loss. Moreover, the improved velocity propagating zonal model was developed for large spaces, thereby balancing accuracy and efficiency. The internal airflow process was determined by a simplified momentum equation. To analyse the impacts of air leakages with wide and complex distribution, a one-layer infiltration model was established according to the directions of infiltration/exfiltration airflows and the distribution of vertical pressure difference. Additionally, based on the in-situ measurements, thermal nonuniformity was emphasised in both vertical and horizontal spaces. By comparing the simulated and measured results over the day, the maximum air temperature deviation was -1.2 °C with a CV/RMSE of 2.4%.</p>
