Abstract:For any pseudo-Anosov automorphism on an orientable closed surface, an inequality is established by bounding certain growth of virtual homological eigenvalues with the Weil-Petersson translation length. The new inequality fits nicely with other known inequalities due to Kojima and McShane (2018) and Lê (2014). The new quantity to be considered is the square sum of the logarithmic radii of the homological eigenvalues (with multiplicity) outside the complex unit circle, called the homological Jensen square sum . The main theorem is as follows. For any cofinal sequence of regular finite covers of a given surface, together with lifts of a given pseudo-Anosov, the homological Jensen square sum of the lifts grows at most linearly fast compared with the covering degree, and the square root of the growth rate is at most 1/√(4π) times the Weil-Petersson translation length of the given pseudo-Anosov.

Abstract:We find sharp upper bounds on the order of the automorphism group of a hypersurface in complex projective space in every dimension and degree. In each case, we prove that the hypersurface realizing the upper bound is unique up to isomorphism and provide explicit generators for the automorphism group. Similar results were recently proven independently by S. Yang, X. Yu, and Z. Zhu using different methods.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a locally compact Hausdorff space, let $A$ be a partially ordered algebra, and let $\pi\colon \mathrm{C}_{\mathrm c}(X)\to A$ be a positive algebra homomorphism. Under conditions on $A$ that are satisfied in a good number of cases of practical interest, it is shown that $\pi$ is represented by a unique regular spectral measure $\mu$ on the Borel $\sigma$-algebra of $X$, taking its values in the positive idempotents in $A$. The measure $\mu$, which is $\sigma$-additive in an ordered sense, represents $\pi$ via the order integral (a generalisation of the Lebesgue integral) that goes back to J.D.M. Wright and which was investigated earlier by the authors. The positive algebra homomorphism $\pi$ can be extended from $\mathrm{C}_{\mathrm c}(X)$ to a positive linear map from the accompanying $L^1$-space of $\mu$ into $A$. It is shown that, quite often, this $L^1$-space is closed under multiplication, so that it is a vector lattice algebra, and that the extended map from $L^1$ into $A$ is not only an algebra homomorphism but, even when $A$ is not a vector lattice, also a vector lattice homomorphism in a sense that is explained in the paper. When $ A$ has the countable sup property, the image of $L^1$ (or of its positive cone) is described in terms of consecutive ups and downs of the image of ${\mathrm C}_{\mathrm c}(X)$ (or of its positive cone). The general results are applied in three different contexts, showing how various spectral theorems have a common order-theoretical root: representations on Banach lattices, on Hilbert spaces, and (the algebra need not consist of operators) spectral theory for JBW-algebras.

Unlikely intersections problem for automorphisms of Markov surfaces

Abstract:We study the problem of unlikely intersections for automorphisms of Markov surfaces of positive entropy. We show for certain parameters that two automorphisms with positive entropy share a Zariski dense set of periodic points if and only if they share a common iterate. Our proof uses arithmetic equidistribution for adelic line bundles over quasiprojective varieties, the theory of laminar currents and quasi-Fuchsian representation theory.

The Dynamical Degrees of Rational Surface Automorphisms

Abstract:The induced action on the Picard group of a rational surface automorphism with positive entropy can be identified with an element of the Coxeter group associated to $E_n, n\ge 10$ diagram. It follows that the set of dynamical degrees of rational surface automorphisms is a subset of the spectral radii of elements in the Coxeter group. This article concerns the realizability of an element of the Coxeter group as an automorphism on a rational surface with an irreducible reduced anti-canonical curve. For any unrealizable element, we explicitly construct a realizable element with the same spectral radius. Hence, we show that the set of dynamical degrees and the set of spectral radii of the Coxeter group are, in fact, identical. This has been shown by Uehara in \cite{Uehara:2010} by explicitly constructing a rational surface automorphism. This construction depends on a decomposition of an element of the Coxeter group. Our proof is conceptual and provides a simple description of elements of the Coxeter group, which are realized by automorphisms on anti-canonical rational surfaces.

Abstract:In their previous works <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2105.11026" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2105.11026">arXiv:2105.11026</a>, <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2206.10749" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2206.10749">arXiv:2206.10749</a>, Cristofaro-Gardiner, Humilière, Mak, Seyfaddini and Smith defined links spectral invariants on connected compact surfaces and used them to show various results on the algebraic structure of the group of area-preserving homeomorphisms of surfaces, particularly in cases where the surfaces have genus zero. We show that on surfaces with higher genus, for a certain class of links, the invariants will satisfy a local quasimorphism property. Subsequently, we generalize their results to surfaces of any genus. This extension includes the non-simplicity of (i) the group of hameomorphisms of a closed surface, and (ii) the kernel of the Calabi homomorphism inside the group of hameomorphisms of a surface with non-empty boundary. Moreover, we prove that the Calabi homomorphism extends (non-canonically) to the $C^0$-closure of the set of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms of any surface. The local quasimorphism property is a consequence of a quantitative Künneth formula for a connected sum in Heegaard Floer homology, inspired by results of Ozsváth and Szabó.

Abstract:Let ℳ_g be the moduli space of hyperbolic surfaces of genus g endowed with the Weil–Petersson metric. In this paper, we show that for any ϵ >0 , as genus g goes to infinity, a generic surface X∈ℳ_g satisfies that the first eigenvalue λ _1(X)>3/16-ϵ . As an application, we also show that a generic surface X∈ℳ_g satisfies that the diameter diam (X)<(4+ϵ )ln (g) for large genus.

Abstract:Let $(M^{n},g)$ be a compact Riemannian manifold with $Ric\geq-(n-1) $. It is well known that the bottom of spectrum $\lambda_{0}$ of its unverversal covering satisfies $\lambda_{0}\leq(n-1) ^{2}/4 $. We prove that equality holds iff $M$ is hyperbolic. This follows from a sharp estimate for the Kaimanovich entropy.

Abstract:Due to the orbifold singularities, the intersection numbers on the moduli space of curves $\bar{\sM}_{g,n}$ are in general rational numbers rather than integers. We study the properties of the denominators of these intersection numbers and their relationship with the orders of automorphism groups of stable curves. In particular, we prove a conjecture of Itzykson and Zuber. We also present a conjectural multinomial type numerical property for Hodge integrals.

Abstract:Surface classification is one of the most fundamental problems in geometric modeling. Surfaces can be classified according to their conformal structures. In general, each topological equivalent class has infinite conformally equivalent classes. This paper introduces a novel method to classify surfaces by their conformal structures. Surfaces in the same conformal class share the same uniformization metric, which induces constant Gaussian curvature everywhere on the surface. Under the uniformization metric, each homotopy class of a closed curves on the surface has a unique geodesic. The lengths of all closed geodesics form the geodesic spectrum. The map from the fundamental group to the geodesic spectrum completely determines the conformal structure of the surface. We first compute the uniformization metric using discrete Ricci flow method, then compute the Fuchsian group generators, finally deduce the geodesic spectra from the generators in a closed form. The method is rigorous and practical. Geodesic spectra is applied as the signature of surfaces for shape comparison and classification.
Bounds on spectral gaps of Hyperbolic spin surfaces

Abstract:We describe a method for constraining Laplacian and Dirac spectra of two dimensional compact orientable hyperbolic spin manifolds and orbifolds. The key ingredient is an infinite family of identities satisfied by the spectra. These spectral identities follow from the consistency between 1) the spectral decomposition of functions on the spin bundle into irreducible representations of $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{R})$ and 2) associativity of pointwise multiplication of functions. Applying semidefinite programming methods to our identities produces rigorous upper bounds on the Laplacian spectral gap as well as on the Dirac spectral gap conditioned on the former. In several examples, our bounds are nearly sharp; a numerical algorithm based on the Selberg trace formula shows that the $[0;3,3,5]$ orbifold, a particular surface with signature $[1;3]$, and the Bolza surface nearly saturate the bounds at genus $0$, $1$ and $2$ respectively. Under additional assumptions on the number of harmonic spinors carried by the spin-surface, we obtain more restrictive bounds on the Laplacian spectral gap. In particular, these bounds apply to hyperelliptic surfaces. We also determine the set of Laplacian spectral gaps attained by all compact orientable two-dimensional hyperbolic spin orbifolds. We show that this set is upper bounded by $12.13798$; this bound is nearly saturated by the $[0;3,3,5]$ orbifold, whose first non-zero Laplacian eigenvalue is $\lambda^{(0)}_1\approx 12.13623$.

Abstract:Among other things, we prove the following two topological statements about closed hyperbolic 3-manifolds. First, every rational second homology class of a closed hyperbolic 3-manifold has a positive integral multiple represented by an oriented connected closed pi(1)-injectively immersed quasi-Fuchsian subsurface. Second, every rationally null-homologous, pi(1)-injectively immersed oriented closed 1-submanifold in a closed hyperbolic 3-manifold has an equidegree finite cover which bounds an oriented connected compact pi(1)-injectively immersed quasi-Fuchsian subsurface. In, we exploit techniques developed by Kahn and Markovic but we only distill geometric and topological ingredients from those papers, so no hard analysis is involved in this article.
Singularity of the Spectrum for Smooth Area-Preserving Flows in Genus Two and Translation Surfaces Well Approximated by Cylinders

Abstract:We consider smooth flows preserving a smooth invariant measure, or, equivalently, locally Hamiltonian flows on compact orientable surfaces and show that, when the genus of the surface is two, almost every such locally Hamiltonian flow with two non-degenerate isomorphic saddles has singular spectrum. More in general, singularity of the spectrum holds for special flows over a full measure set of interval exchange transformations with a hyperelliptic permutation (of any number of exchanged intervals), under a roof with symmetric logarithmic singularities. The result is proved using a criterion for singularity based on tightness of Birkhoff sums with exponential tails decay. A key ingredient in the proof, which is of independent interest, is a result on translation surfaces well approximated by single cylinders. We show that for almost every translation surface in any connected component of any stratum there exists a full measure set of directions which can be well approximated by a single cylinder of area arbitrarily close to one. The result, in the special case of the stratum H ( 1 , 1 ) , yields rigidity sets needed for the singularity result.
Spectral estimates on hyperbolic surfaces and a necessary condition for observability of the heat semigroup on manifolds

Abstract:This article is a continuation of <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2401.14977" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2401.14977">arXiv:2401.14977</a>. We study the concentration properties of spectral projectors on manifolds, in connection with the uncertainty principle. In <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2401.14977" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2401.14977">arXiv:2401.14977</a>, the second author proved an optimal uncertainty principle for the spectral projector of the Laplacian on the hyperbolic half-plane. The aim of the present work is to generalize this condition to surfaces with hyperbolic ends. In particular, we tackle the case of cusps, in which the volume of balls of fixed radius is not bounded from below. We establish that spectral estimates hold from sets satisfying a thickness condition, with a proof based on propagation of smallness estimates of Carleman and Logunov--Malinnikova type. We also prove the converse, namely the necessary character of the thickness condition, on any smooth manifold with Ricci curvature bounded from below.

Rigidity of periodic points for loxodromic automorphisms of affine surfaces

Abstract:We show that two automorphisms of an affine surface with dynamical degree strictly larger than 1 share a Zariski dense set of periodic points if and only if they have the same periodic points. We construct canonical heights for these automorphisms and use arithmetic equidistribution for adelic line bundles over quasiprojective varieties following the work of Yuan and Zhang. Finally, we extend the local arithmetic Hodge index theorem to a certain class of vertical adelic line bundles over quasiprojective varieties to conclude the proof.

Spectral theory of the invariant Laplacian on the disk and the sphere -- a complex analysis approach

Abstract:The central theme of this paper is the holomorphic spectral theory of the canonical Laplace operator of the complement $\Omega := \{(z,w) \in \widehat{\mathbb{C}}^2 \colon z \cdot w \neq 1\}$ of the "complexified unit circle" $\{(z,w) \in \widehat{\mathbb{C}}^2 \colon z \cdot w = 1\}$. We start by singling out a distinguished set of holomorphic eigenfunctions on the bidisk in terms of hypergeometric functions and prove that they provide a spectral decomposition of every holomorphic eigenfunction on the bidisk. As a second step, we identify the maximal domains of definition of these eigenfunctions and show that these maximal domains naturally determine the fine structure of the eigenspaces. Our main result gives an intrinsic classification of all closed Möbius invariant subspaces of eigenspaces of the canonical Laplacian of $\Omega$. Generalizing foundational prior work of Helgason and Rudin, this provides a unifying complex analytic framework for the real-analytic eigenvalue theories of both the hyperbolic and spherical Laplace operators on the open unit disk resp. the Riemann sphere and, in particular, shows how they are interrelated with one another.

Abstract:In this article we show that, under certain conditions, equality of the Margulis-Smilga invariant spectra of two Margulis-Smilga spacetimes induce an automorphism of the ambient affine Lie group. In particular, we show that equality of the Margulis-Smilga invariant spectra of two Margulis-Smilga spacetimes, coming from the adjoint representation of a real split simple algebraic Lie group $\mathsf{G}$ with trivial center and Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$, induce an automorphism of the affine group $\mathsf{G}\ltimes\mathfrak{g}$.
