Abstract:This goal of the paper is to show that the automorphisms of the complex of curves in a surface are induced by the self-homeomorphisms of the surface except the surface is the 2-holed torus.

Geometry of Complex Bounded Domains with Finite-Volume Quotients

Abstract:We first show that for a bounded pseudoconvex domain with a manifold quotient of finite-volume in the sense of Kahler-Einstein measure, the identity component of the automorphism group of this domain is semi-simple without compact factors. This partially answers an open question in [Fra95]. Then we apply this result in different settings to solve several open problems, for examples, (1). We prove that the automorphism group of the Griffiths domain [Gri71] in ℂ^2 is discrete. This gives a complete answer to an open question raised four decades ago. (2). We show that for a contractible HHR/USq complex manifold D with a finite-volume manifold quotient M, if D contains a one-parameter group of holomorphic automorphisms and the fundamental group of M is irreducible, then D is biholomorphic to a bounded symmetric domain. This theorem can be viewed as a finite-volume version of Nadel-Frankel's solution for the Kahzdan conjecture, which has been open for years. (3). We show that for a bounded convex domain D⊂ℂ^n of C^2-smooth boundary, if D has a finite-volume manifold quotient with an irreducible fundamental group, then D is biholomorphic to the unit ball in ℂ^n, which partially solves an old conjecture of Yau. For (2) and (3) above, if the complex dimension is equal to 2, more refined results will be provided.

Abstract:Given a natural number k and an orientable surface S of finite type, define the k-curve graph to be the graph with vertices corresponding to isotopy classes of essential simple closed curves on S and with edges corresponding to pairs of such curves admitting representatives that intersect at most k times. We prove that the automorphism group of the k-curve graph of a surface S is isomorphic to the extended mapping class group for all k sufficiently small with respect to the Euler characteristic of S. We prove the same result for the so-called systolic complex, a variant of the curve graph whose complete subgraphs encode the intersection patterns for any collection of systoles with respect to a hyperbolic metric. This resolves a conjecture of Schmutz Schaller.

Automorphisms of moduli spaces of principal bundles over a smooth curve

Abstract:For any almost-simple group $G$ over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic zero, we describe the automorphism group of the moduli space of semistable $G$-bundles over a connected smooth projective curve $C$ of genus at least $4$. The result is achieved by studying the singular fibers of the Hitchin fibration. As a byproduct, we provide a description of the irreducible components of two natural closed subsets in the Hitchin basis: the divisor of singular cameral curves and the divisor of singular Hitchin fibers.

Abstract:The fine curve graph of a surface was introduced by Bowden, Hensel, and Webb as a graph consisting of essential simple closed curves on the surface. Long, Margalit, Pham, Verberne, and Yao proved that the automorphism group of the fine curve graph of a closed orientable surface is isomorphic to the homeomorphism group of the surface. In this paper, based on their argument, we prove that the automorphism group of the fine curve graph of a closed nonorientable surface $N$ of genus $g \geq 4$ is isomorphic to the homeomorphism group of $N$.

Abstract:The author determines the structure of automorphism groups of smooth plane curves of degree at least four. Furthermore, he gives some upper bounds for the order of automorphism groups of smooth plane curves and classifies the cases with large automorphism groups. This paper also contains a simple proof of the uniqueness of smooth plane curves with the full automorphism group of maximal order for each degree.

Abstract:In this paper, we study a flag complex which is naturally associated to the Thurston theory of surface diffeomorphisms for compact connected orientable surfaces with boundary. The various pieces of the Thurston decomposition of a surface diffeomorphism, thick domains and annular or thin domains, fit into this flag complex, which we call the complex of domains. The main result of this paper is a computation of the group of automorphisms of this complex. Unlike the complex of curves, introduced by Harvey, for which, for all but a finite number of exceptional surfaces, by the works of Ivanov, Korkmaz, and Luo, all automorphisms are geometric (i.e. induced by homeomorphisms), the complex of domains has nongeometric automorphisms, provided the surface in question has at least two boundary components. These nongeometric automorphisms of the complex of domains are associated to certain edges of the complex which are naturally associated to biperipheral pairs of pants on the surface in question. We project the complex of domains to a natural subcomplex of the complex of domains by collapsing each biperipheral edge onto the unique vertex of that edge which is represented by a regular neighborhood of a biperipheral curve and, thereby, reduce the computation in question to computing the group of automorphisms of this subcomplex, which we call the truncated complex of domains. Finally, we prove that the group of automorphisms of the truncated complex of domains is the extended mapping class group of the surface in question and, obtain, thereby, a complete description of the group of automorphisms of the complex of domains.

Abstract:Let S be any orientable surface of infinite genus with a finite number of boundary components. In this work we consider the curve complex C(S), the nonseparating curve complex N(S) and the Schmutz graph G(S) of S. When all the topological ends of S carry genus, we show that all elements in the automorphism groups Aut(C(S)), Aut(N(S)) and Aut(G(S)) are geometric, i.e. these groups are naturally isomorphic to the extended mapping class group MCG*(S) of the infinite surface S. Finally, we study rigidity phenomena within Aut(C(S)) and Aut(N(S))

Abstract:In this paper we give an explicit description of the automorphism group of a primary Kodaira surface $X$ in terms of suitable liftings to the universal cover $\mathbb{C}^2$. As it happens for complex tori, the automorphism group of $X$ is an extension of a finite cyclic group related to the action of the automorphisms on the tangent bundle of $X$ by a group of automorphisms which acts on $X$ as translations (both on the base and on the fibres of the elliptic fibraion of $X$). We can then characterize those automorphisms acting symplectically and those acting trivially on cohomology. Finally, we describe the fixed locus of an automorphism and we show that, if not empty, it is the union of a finite number of fibres of the elliptic fibration of $X$. As a byproduct, we provide a different proof of Borcea's description of the moduli space of Kodaira surfaces.

Abstract:For a locally finite, connected graph $\Gamma$, let $\operatorname{Map}(\Gamma)$ denote the group of proper homotopy equivalences of $\Gamma$ up to proper homotopy. Excluding sporadic cases, we show $\operatorname{Aut}(S(M_\Gamma)) \cong \operatorname{Map}(\Gamma)$, where $\mathcal{S}(M_\Gamma)$ is the sphere complex of the doubled handlebody $M_\Gamma$ associated to $\Gamma$. We also construct an exhaustion of $S(M_\Gamma)$ by finite strongly rigid sets when $\Gamma$ has finite rank and finitely many rays, and an appropriate generalization otherwise.

Abstract:We show that smooth hypersurfaces in complex projective spaces with automorphism groups of maximum size are isomorphic to Fermat hypersurfaces, with a few exceptions. For the exceptions, we give explicitly the defining equations and automorphism groups.

Abstract:We study automorphism and birational automorphism groups of varieties over fields of positive characteristic from the point of view of Jordan and $p$-Jordan property. In particular, we show that the Cremona group of rank $2$ over a field of characteristic $p>0$ is $p$-Jordan, and the birational automorphism group of an arbitrary geometrically irreducible algebraic surface is nilpotently $p$-Jordan of class at most $2$. Also, we show that the automorphism group of a smooth geometrically irreducible projective variety of non-negative Kodaira dimension is Jordan in the usual sense.

Abstract:We consider complex projective structures on Riemann surfaces and their groups of projective automorphisms. We show that the structures achieving the maximal possible number of projective automorphisms allowed by their genus are precisely the Fuchsian uniformizations of Hurwitz surfaces by hyperbolic metrics. More generally we show that Galois Belyĭ curves are precisely those Riemann surfaces for which the Fuchsian uniformization is the unique complex projective structure invariant under the full group of biholomorphisms.

Abstract:In this paper we study the automorphism group of the procongruence mapping class group through its action on the associated procongruence curve and pants complexes. Our main result is a rigidity theorem for the procongruence completion of the pants complex. As an application we prove that moduli stacks of smooth algebraic curves satisfy a weak anabelian property in the procongruence setting.

Abstract:We consider translation surfaces with poles on surfaces. We shall prove that any finite group appears as the automorphism group of some translation surface with poles. As a direct consequence we obtain the existence of structures achieving the maximal possible number of automorphisms allowed by their genus and we finally extend the same results to branched projective structures.
