Abstract:Optical gain and loss are considered as a pair of feuds. It is widely believed that optical loss is the most detrimental factor in laser systems that decreases the laser efficiency. The hitherto approach is to minimize or even avoid any loss in designing any laser systems. From an opposite vantage point, however, we demonstrate that harnessing additional optical losses enables an energy-efficient microlaser with a robust single-mode lasing action even in the nonlinear regime above lasing threshold. This is due to elimination of the undesired spatial hole burning effect by tailoring the complex index modulations at an exceptional point (EP), thereby spatially maximizing the interaction of optical gain material with light field in a homogeneous fashion. Approximately 2x enhancement in the laser slope efficiency is observed, enabled by elimination of spatial hole burning. This result is expected to reposition a strategic role of optical losses in laser systems, advancing fundamental laser physics and promising novel technologies in energy-efficient photonic systems.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a hybrid structure microlaser on chip with a single CdSe nanowire attached to a high-Q silica microdisk cavity at room temperature. When pumped by a 532 nm pulse laser, both single-longitudinal mode and multi-longitudinal mode lasers with linewidth of 0.18 nm are obtained from the hybrid structure with a 58-mu m-diameter microdisk and a 250-nm diameter nanowire. The measured lasing threshold of the microlaser is as low as 100 mu J/cm(2). (C) 2012 Optical Society of America

Abstract:In analogy to the impurity levels of semiconductors, optical cavities are created if irregular regions are introduced into the perfect photonic crystals. Photonic crystal single defect cavity is expected to obtain nearly thresholdless laser because it can create wavelength-scale small resonant mode with high-quality factors and high spontaneous emission coupling. In this paper, we have studied a new type of defect called annular microcavity created by drilling a circular hole in a usual defect cylinder in two-dimensional triangular photonic crystal by using the supercell method. The hole within the rod greatly modifies the defect modes by controlling filling fraction of dielectric material from the inner of the defect and lowering symmetry of the defect. It is found that the annular defect provides extra two more variables due to the hole (radius and refractive index) that can be utilized to alter the properties of the defect. And this opens up a new method to achieve and tune acceptor-mode cavity. Moving the hole can split the degenerate modes. The departure displacement determines the splitting space and the departure angle determines symmetry of distributions of electric fields. These results exhibit more advantages over the conventional defects and may be utilized to single-mode operation of microcavity laser.

Abstract: Integrated single-mode microlasers with ultra-narrow linewidths play a game-changing role in a broad spectrum of applications ranging from coherent communication and LIDAR to metrology and sensing. Generation of such light sources in a controllable and cost-effective manner remains an outstanding challenge due to the difficulties in the realization of ultra-high Q active micro-resonators with suppressed mode numbers. Here, we report a microlaser generated in an ultra-high Q Erbium doped lithium niobate (LN) micro-disk. Through the formation of coherently combined polygon modes at both pump and laser wavelengths, the microlaser exhibits single mode operation with an ultra-narrow-linewidth of 98 Hz. In combination with the superior electro-optic and nonlinear optical properties of LN crystal, the mass-producible on-chip single-mode microlaser will provide an essential building block for the photonic integrated circuits demanding high precision frequency control and reconfigurability.

Abstract:Optical microcavities have been paid enormous attentions as a basic integrated element in photonic devices including micromodulators, microfilters, and microsensors. In particular, the microcavities that can produce unidirectional and single-mode lasing emissions are greatly demanded to meet the challenge of integrating high-efficiency and high-sensitivity optical functional systems. Herein, a three-dimensional polymer microlaser composed of stacked circular-ring-shaped and spiral-ring-shaped microcavities is fabricated directly on a narrow bandpass filter substrate by the femtosecond laser processing technique. The on-chip polymer microlaser provides a room-temperature, low-threshold, unidirectional, and single-mode laser output, resulting from the coupling between the two stacked microcavities. The fabrication of the on-chip low-threshold polymer microlaser opens up a possibility toward the integration of a variety of polymer microcavities for organic optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:The effective manipulation of mode oscillation and competition is of fundamental importance for controlling light emission in semiconductor lasers. Here we develop a rate equation model which considers the spatially modulated gain and spontaneous emission, which are inherently governed by the ripple of the vacuum electromagnetic field in a Fabry-Pérot (FP) microcavity. By manipulating the interplay between the spatial oscillation of the vacuum field and external optical injection via dual-beam laser interference, single longitudinal mode operation is observed in a FP-type microcavity with a side mode suppression ratio exceeding 40 dB. An exploration of this extended rate equation model bridges the gap between the classical model of multimode competition in semiconductor lasers and a quantum-optics understanding of radiative processes in microcavities.

Abstract:Single-frequency ultranarrow linewidth on-chip microlasers with a fast wavelength tunability play a game-changing role in a broad spectrum of applications ranging from coherent communication, light detection and ranging, to metrology and sensing. Design and fabrication of such light sources remain a challenge due to the difficulties in making a laser cavity that has an ultrahigh optical quality (Q) factor and supports only a single lasing frequency simultaneously. Here, we demonstrate a unique single-frequency ultranarrow linewidth lasing mechanism on an erbium ion-doped lithium niobate (LN) microdisk through simultaneous excitation of high-Q polygon modes at both pump and laser wavelengths. As the polygon modes are sparse within the optical gain bandwidth compared with the whispering gallery mode counterpart, while their Q factors (above 10 million) are even higher due to the significantly reduced scattering on their propagation paths, single-frequency lasing with a linewidth as narrow as 322 Hz is observed. The measured linewidth is three orders of magnitude narrower than the previous record in on-chip LN microlasers. Finally, enabled by the strong linear electro-optic effect of LN, real-time electro-optical tuning of the microlaser with a high tuning efficiency of similar to 50 pm/100 V is demonstrated.

Abstract:In this Letter, we report a suspended whispering gallery mode microdisk with a hole pierced through its surface. The novel disk is made up of Rhodamine B-doped resin, which is fabricated by femtosecond laser direct writing technology. The pierced microcavity achieves highly directional emission of single-mode lasing with a far field divergence angle of about 10 deg, and its high Q factor exceeds 2.6×103. The excellent properties are confirmed by numerical simulation based on the finite-difference time-domain method. The effect of the pierced hole on the microcavity performance is discussed in detail. The method is easy to implement and has a guiding significance for improving the characteristics of an existing microcavity by simple modification.

Abstract:Spatial hole burning prevents single-frequency operation of thin-disk lasers when the thin disk is used as a folding mirror. We present an evaluation of the saturation effects in the disk for disks acting as end-mirrors and as folding-mirrors explaining one of the main obstacles towards single-frequency operation. It is shown that a twisted-mode scheme based on a multi-order quarter-wave plate combined with a polarizer provides an almost complete suppression of spatial hole burning and creates an additional wavelength selectivity that enforces efficient single-frequency operation.

Abstract:A mode‐structure‐breaking microcavity is designed and constructed that can precisely modulate lasing modes, achieving high‐performance single‐mode lasing output within a single structure. This universal approach is suitable for any laser system and is crucial for creating on‐chip laser arrays in photonic integrated circuits. Single‐mode lasers are highly desirable for applications in optical communication, quantum information, and photonic computing, but their realization is challenging due to the competition of multiple closely spaced resonant modes in microcavities. This paper proposes a novel approach, termed mode structure breaking, to achieve high‐performance single‐mode lasing in an individual laser cavity. By introducing selective spatial structure defects, the mode structure of competing modes can be broken, enabling single‐mode selection without huge losses. As proof of concept, femtosecond (fs)‐laser ablation is experimentally employed to introduce external angle defects on a microdisk cavity, effectively eliminating mismatched competing modes and thus achieving single‐mode lasing output. The lasing characteristics are further optimized by incorporating a punched hole to suppress remaining high‐order lasing modes. Notably, the fabricated perovskite laser sources, which are called mode‐structure‐breaking lasers, demonstrate excellent single‐mode lasing properties, including stability, an ultralow threshold (≈2.31 μJ cm−2), and a narrow linewidth (≈0.15 nm). Conclusively, this comprehensive study of manipulating lasing mode by breaking mode structure may provide a promising approach to realizing single‐mode lasing in a single structure, which is significant for producing on‐chip laser source arrays for use in photonic integrated circuits.

Abstract:We report the design and experimental results of a narrow linewidth single-mode slotted Fabry-Pérot laser by using deep etched trenches. Good performances in lasing threshold, side-mode suppression ratio, and linewidth are obtained. The deep trench is effective in reducing the cavity loss compared to the previously investigated shallow etched slots, resulting in a lower threshold and a narrower linewidth (down to ~80 kHz). Since no grating and multiple epitaxial growth are required, such a simple, compact, and monolithic semiconductor laser with narrow linewidth may have potential applications in coherent communication systems.

Abstract:Lasers, as the key driving force in the field of optics and photonics over other photonic components, are now being significantly benefited from the studies of nanophotonics and metamaterials, broadening laser physics and device applications. The properties of light are much more beyond its simple intensity and temporal characteristics. The fruitful nature of light provides a great variety of freedoms in manipulating light for modern photonic applications, including spin (polarization), chirality, angular momentum, and spin-orbit coupling. Unfortunately, all these fundamental properties and functionalities of light have not been fully exploited in micro/nano-laser systems because the conventional principles of laser design in bulk optics cannot be easily scaled down to the micro/nano scale. The capability of creating microlasers with controlled spin/orbital information and chirality in their radiations is expected to revolutionize next generation of photonic systems for computing and communication. In this talk, I will focus on our recent effort in harnessing optical losses for unique microlaser functionalities, in particular, an orbital angular momentum (OAM) microlaser that structure and twist the lasing radiation at the microscale. The effective generation of OAM lasing, especially at a micro/nano-scale, could address the growing demand for information capacity. By exploiting the emerging non-Hermitian photonics design at an exceptional point, we demonstrate a microring laser producing a single-mode OAM vortex lasing with the ability to precisely define the topological charge of the OAM mode and its polarization state. Our OAM microlaser could find applications in the next generation of integrated optoelectronic devices for optical communications.

Abstract:We experimentally report an asymmetrical spherical microcavity with thermal-induced deformation, in which five-bounce whispering-gallery modes possess not only ultrahigh quality factors (Q) but also remarkably directional escape emission from the microsphere boundary. With efficient free-space excitation and collection, a low-threshold microlaser is demonstrated and exhibits a highly directional emission. Our measurement agrees well with the theoretical predictions by corrected Fresnel law.

Abstract:Vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers that can be controlled to emit hollow laser beam in certain LP21 mode are proposed and fabricated. A circular inverted surface relief with precisely designed diameter and thickness is introduced through theoretical simulation. The fabricated device shows a stable single LP21 mode operation with excellent robustness of mode and power to temperature. Preliminary analysis attribute the excellent performance of the device to the inverted surface relief, leading to hollow near-field spot distribution.

Abstract:The on-chip integrated visible microlaser is a core unit of high-speed visible-light communication with huge bandwidth resources , which needs robustness against fabrication errors, compressible linewidth, reducible threshold, and in-plane emission . However, until now, it has been a great challenge to meet these requirements simultaneously. Here, we report a scalable strategy to realize a robust on-chip integrated visible microlaser with further improved lasing performances enabled by the increased orders ( n ) of exceptional surfaces, and experimentally verify the strategy by demonstrating the performances of a second-order exceptional surface–tailored microlaser. We further prove the potential application of the strategy by discussing an exceptional surface–tailored topological microlaser with unique performances. This work lays a foundation for further development of on-chip integrated high-speed visible-light communication and processing systems, provides a platform for the fundamental study of non-Hermitian photonics, and proposes a feasible method of joint research for non-Hermitian photonics with nonlinear optics and topological photonics.
Ultra-low threshold lasing through phase front engineering via a metallic circular aperture

Abstract:Semiconductor lasers with ultra-low thresholds and minimal footprints are a topic of active research. Such devices require a combination of high quality factor laser cavities with small active region volumes, which drives the quest for novel cavity geometries exploiting nano-optic concepts. For high-reflectivity coated ridge lasers, where light is tightly confined in the waveguide, a low threshold can only be achieved by strongly reducing the diffraction losses arising at the laser facet. We show here that, somewhat counter-intuitively, opening a carefully designed aperture in a metallic facet coating can simultaneously enhance both its transmission and modal reflectivity by correcting the phase front at the subwavelength scale. Numerical simulations and experimental results demonstrate a reduction of optical mirror loss by up to 40% while the transmission is increased by four orders of magnitude. Applying this approach to both facets of a short cavity quantum cascade laser, we achieve laser operation at room temperature with an electrical dissipation of only 143 mW. Such light sources are especially suitable for portable and battery-operated chemical agent sensing applications operating in the mid-infrared wavelength range, where multiple greenhouse and pollutant gases have their fundamental absorption lines. Our work suggests possibilities for further applications including frequency comb dispersion engineering, and can be implemented in a broad range of optoelectronic systems.

Abstract:We demonstrate a hybrid laser with a low intrinsic linewidth of 34.2 Hz and a high fiber-coupled output power of 11.7 dBm, by coupling a Si3N4-based subwavelength hole defect assisted microring reflector (SHDA-MRR) to a commercially available distributed feedback semiconductor laser. The proposed SHDA-MRR structure features an accurately controlled reflection response, with the manipulated modal coupling between two degenerate counterpropagating modes induced by a subwavelength hole defect embedded in the microring waveguide. With further joint optimization of cavity parameters, this Si3N4 SHDA-MRR structure is expected to reduce the laser intrinsic linewidth to a sub-hertz level. This work explores a low-cost and robust linewidth reduction scheme for the applications of high-speed coherent optical communications systems and high-resolution optical metrology. Abstract:The realization of high-Q single-mode lasing on the microscale is significant for the advancement of on-chip integrated light sources. It remains a challenging trade-off between Q-factor enhancement and light-field localization to raise the lasing emission rate. Here, we fabricated a zero-dimensional perovskite microcavity integrated with a nondamage pressed microlens to three-dimensionally tailor the intracavity light field and demonstrated linearly and nonlinearly (two-photon) pumped lasing by this microfocusing configuration. Notably, the microlensing microcavity experimentally achieves a high Q-factor (16700), high polarization (99.6%), and high Purcell factor (11.40) single-mode lasing under high-repetition pulse pumping. Three-dimensional light-field confinement formed by the microlens and plate microcavity simultaneously reduces the mode volume (∼3.66 μm3) and suppresses diffraction and transverse walk-off loss, which induces discretization on energy-momentum dispersions and spatial electromagnetic-field distributions. The Q factor and Purcell factor of our lasing come out on top among most of the reported perovskite microcavities, paving a promising avenue toward further studying electrically driven on-chip microlasers.
