Abstract:We propose an ultra-broadband mode converter based on the structure of a length-apodized long-period grating, where π-phase shifts are introduced at strategic locations of the grating profile. Using a 3-section length-apodized grating structure, we design and fabricate an LP01-LP11a and an LP01-LP11b mode converter with a sidewall grating and a surface grating formed along a polymer channel waveguide, respectively. The fabricated LP01-LP11a and LP01-LP11b mode converters provide a conversion efficiency higher than 99% over a bandwidth of ~120 nm and ~150 nm, respectively, or a conversion efficiency higher than 90% over a bandwidth of ~180 nm and ~300 nm, respectively. The transmission characteristics of these devices are weakly sensitive to polarization and temperature variations. These mode converters can find applications in ultra-broadband mode-division-multiplexing transmission systems based on few-mode fibers and the design principle can be applied to general grating-based mode-coupling devices for a wide range of applications.

Abstract:We propose a novel embedded long-period waveguide grating (LPWG) for the implementation of a broadband mode conversion. The proposed LPWG is formed in the inner of waveguide where the two coupled modes have the largest field overlap and, hence, features an ultra-short length and a wide bandwidth. Besides, the bandwidth of the proposed LPWG is further increased by manipulating its phase-matching curve. Our proof-of-principle device, fabricated with polymer for the conversion between the E 11 and E 21 modes, contains only two periods and achieves a mode conversion efficiency larger than 98.2% (99.2%) for the x ( y ) polarization over the C + L band. The proposed LPWG could find applications as an ultra-compact and broadband mode converter in mode-division-multiplexing system.

Abstract:We have demonstrated an ultra-broadband fiber mode converter based on CO2-laser inscribed length apodized phase-shifted long-period gratings (LPGs) with a three-section linear length apodization profile, where a π-phase shift was introduced between two adjacent grating sections. The grating parameters were optimized theoretically to achieve the broadband mode conversion between the LP01 mode and LP11 mode. The demonstrated device provides mode conversion efficiency higher than 90% over an ultra- broad bandwidth of ∼182nm. The insertion loss of the LPGs is negligible. Orbital angular momentum modes with left- and right-handed circular polarization can be generated from the demonstrated ultra-broadband mode converter successfully.

Abstract:We design and fabricate a corrugated grating on a polymer waveguide for the realization of the conversion between the fundamental mode and the higher order mode. The transmission characteristics of the device are insensitive to the polarization state of the input light. Our typical fabricated device shows a mode conversion efficiency higher than 99% over a bandwidth of similar to 4 nm and a temperature sensitivity of 3.5 nm/degrees C, which allows the operation wavelength of the device to be tuned over the C + L band with a temperature control <30 degrees C. This mode converter could be integrated with other waveguide devices to realize more sophisticated functions for mode-division-multiplexing systems.

Abstract:We report an ultra-broadband LP11 mode converter with high purity based on integrated two shunt-wound long-period fiber gratings (LPFGs) and an adiabatic Y-junction, together with a high-order-mode bandpass filter. Two shunt-wound LPFGs are inscribed by CO2 laser in a two-mode fiber to achieve a 10 dB bandwidth of 50 nm and 51 nm at resonance wavelengths of 1530 nm and 1570 nm, respectively. Meanwhile, the Y-junction fabricated by lithography can be operated over S + C+L band to combine the converted LP11 mode. The presented ultra-broadband mode converter is able to achieve a mode conversion efficiency of 95%, together with a wavelength-dependent loss of less than 3 dB over the S + C+L band. This device has low modal crosstalk of 17 dB between the LP01 and LP11 modes, because most of the residual LP01 mode is further filtered by a high-order-mode bandpass filter at the output port of the Y-junction. The insertion loss of mode converter is estimated to be lower than 2.7 dB, due to the use of low loss polymer material during the fabrication. The proposed ultra-broadband LP11 mode converter with high purity is promising for the application of ultra-broadband mode-division-multiplexing transmission systems.

Abstract:We demonstrate the fabrication of over-coupled long-period fiber gratings (LPFGs) in the 1.55-µm and 2-µm wavebands enabling broadband linearly polarized LP11 mode conversion using a CO2 laser. The birefringence of the fiber is caused by on one side laser exposure and increases with the increase of refractive index modulation depth, which realizes the conversion of linearly polarized modes. The mode conversion bandwidth can be significantly increased by using the over-coupled LPFG. The 10-dB bandwidth of the LPFGs with |κ|L values of π/2, 3π/2, and 5π/2 are 33.04, 80.84, and 114.08 nm at 1.55 µm waveband, respectively. The maximum bandwidth of the over-coupled LPFG is 3.79 times higher than that of conventional LPFG. The operating wavelength of the mode converter can be extended to 2.0 µm wavebands and the maximum 10-dB bandwidth reaches 161.32 nm. The proposed broadband linearly polarized mode converters could have potential application in the fields of mode division multiplexing systems, fiber laser systems.

Abstract:We investigated theoretically and experimentally the cascaded long-period fiber gratings (c-LPFGs) in a few-mode fiber (FMF) for the generation of LP11 core mode in a broad wavelength range. The dependence of the transmission spectra of the c-LPFGs on the spacing between the gratings, and grating periods are studied in detail. The c-LPFGs experimentally generate LP11 core mode in a 10-dB bandwidth of 193.6 nm in 1.55 µm waveband and 447.5 nm in 2 µm waveband, respectively. The first-order orbital angular momentum mode can be converted by the c-LPFGs with the same broadband wavelength range. The 10-dB bandwidth and corresponding wavelength range for mode conversion can be adjusted by changing the grating spacing and grating periods.

Abstract:We investigated theoretically and experimentally the long-period fiber gratings (LPFGs) inscribed in the tapered few-mode fiber (FMF), and successfully generated the LP11 core mode in a broad wavelength range. Simulation and experimental studies have demonstrated that the phase matching curve of the FMF-LPFG can be changed through fiber tapering, thereby moving the dispersion turning point (DTP) to the communication band. The tunable ultra-broadband mode converter can be realized based on the DTP-LPFG. We investigated the relationship between the DTP of the FMF-LPFGs and fiber diameter. The LPFGs were fabricated in the FMF with diameters of and , with 10-dB bandwidth of 504 nm and 450 nm, respectively. The 10-dB bandwidth of the mode converter and the corresponding wavelength range can be adjusted by changing the fiber diameter.

Abstract:We investigated an all-fiber mode converter based on long-period fiber gratings (LPFGs) written in the few-mode fiber. Mode conversion between the fundamental core mode and different higher-order core modes (LP11, LP21, and LP02 modes) can be realized via a single LPFG with an efficiency of 99% at the resonance wavelength. Moreover, optimized mode conversion between the LP01 and LP21 modes can be realized by cascading two LPFGs with different grating pitches. The maximum conversion efficiency is estimated to be ∼99.5% at 1553 nm. The orbital angular momentum states with different topological charges (±1,±2) are demonstrated experimentally. The all-fiber LPFG mode converters could have promising applications in the mode-division multiplexing optical communications.

Abstract:Mode division multiplexing is a new communication technology, which increases the communication capacity by increasing the multiplexing dimension of patterns. This paper introduces a new type of long period fiber grating mode converter based on hybrid dual-core fiber. The beam propagation method is used to numerically analyze the mode conversion from LP01 to LP21 and LP02 mode by changing the core distance. From the simulation results, LP01 converts to LP21 and LP02 with different dual-core fiber structures. it can be seen that the mode converter realizes LP01 to LP21 and LP02. The purity of LP21 is up to 98%. The purity of LP02 is even up to 98%, and the 3dB bandwidth is 21nm.

Abstract:Long-period grating (LPG) stands as a significant wavelength-selective optical apparatus with applications in telecommunications. This device facilitates the selective coupling of light at resonated wavelengths from the core of an optical fiber or waveguide to the cladding, thereby creating a rejection band within the output transmission spectrum. Long-period fiber gratings (LPFGs) have therefore been studied extensively for fiber-optic communication and sensing applications. Nevertheless, achieving high-speed wavelength tuning of the LPG remains a formidable challenge. In contrast to LPFG, fabricating LPG on waveguide chip is more practicable due to the diverse selection of waveguide materials and structures available. This flexibility enables the use of electro-optic materials to activate the long-period waveguide grating (LPWG), thereby achieving high-speed, sensitive, and wide-band wavelength tuning. This report outlines the design electro-optically tunable LPWG utilizing electro-optic polymer (EOP) cladding on silicon nitride waveguide. EOP presents notable advantages, including high electro-optic coefficients, low dielectric constants, and seamless integration with various photonic materials. The modulation of the refractive index of the EOP cladding by an external electric field induces a change in the effective refractive index of the cladding mode, consequently leading to a central wavelength shift in the output transmission spectrum. The simulation results indicate that when the electrode space is 5 µm and the EO coefficient of EOP is 100 pm/V, the tuning efficiency is 0.3 nm/V. This demonstration underscores the efficacy of utilizing electro-optic polymer-based long-period waveguide gratings for rapid and precise wavelength tuning in photonic integrated circuits.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel broadband all-fiber mode converter is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Through writing a pair of superimposed long period fiber gratings (SLPFGs) in tow-mode fiber (TMF) with a CO2 laser, the mode converter can realize the conversion from LP01 to LP11 owing to the phase matching condition. Numerical and experimental results show that the bandwidth of this mode converter is 3 times broader than that of a single grating converter. The converter has low loss, high coupling efficiency, small size and is easy to fabricate, so it can be widely used in mode-division multiplexing.

Abstract:We propose a special lithium-niobate (LiNbO3) single-mode waveguide for the realization of long-period gratings, which consists of a channel core embedded in a thin slab cladding. We fabricated the waveguide on a z-cut LiNbO3 substrate with a two-step proton-exchange process and demonstrated its suitability for grating application with a number of removable photoresist long-period gratings deposited on the waveguide surface. The waveguide fabrication process and the LiNbO3: waveguide structure could be further explored for the development of electrooptic gratings for high-speed applications.

Abstract:Abstract In this paper, a compact and broadband mode converter, which can achieve efficient LP01-LP11a mode conversion, is demonstrated with cascaded asymmetric Y-junction in polymer waveguide. Our typical fabricated converter has a compact footprint of 1.5 mm × 14 µm and shows a mode conversion efficiency larger than ~ 98%, a crosstalk less than ~ −17.5 dB, and an insertion loss lower than ~ 5.8 dB for both x and y polarizations over the C + L band. Our proposed mode converter could find applications in broadband mode-division multiplexing transmission systems.
