Abstract:Few-mode-fiber (FMF) based mode division multiplexing (MDM) is a promising technique to further increase the transmission capacity of single mode fibers. We propose and numerically investigate a fiber-optical mode converter (MC) using long period gratings (LPGs) fabricated on the FMF by point-by-point CO2 laser inscription technique. In order to precisely excite three modes (LP01, LP11, and LP02), both untilted LPG and tilted LPG are comprehensively optimized through the length, index modulation depth, and tilt angle of the LPG in order to achieve a mode contrast ratio (MCR) of more than 20dB with less wavelength dependence. It is found that the proposed MCs have obvious advantages of high MCR, low mode crosstalk, easy fabrication and maintenance, and compact size.

Abstract:We investigated theoretically and experimentally the long-period fiber gratings (LPFGs) inscribed in the tapered few-mode fiber (FMF), and successfully generated the LP11 core mode in a broad wavelength range. Simulation and experimental studies have demonstrated that the phase matching curve of the FMF-LPFG can be changed through fiber tapering, thereby moving the dispersion turning point (DTP) to the communication band. The tunable ultra-broadband mode converter can be realized based on the DTP-LPFG. We investigated the relationship between the DTP of the FMF-LPFGs and fiber diameter. The LPFGs were fabricated in the FMF with diameters of and , with 10-dB bandwidth of 504 nm and 450 nm, respectively. The 10-dB bandwidth of the mode converter and the corresponding wavelength range can be adjusted by changing the fiber diameter.

Abstract:We report an ultra-broadband LP11 mode converter with high purity based on integrated two shunt-wound long-period fiber gratings (LPFGs) and an adiabatic Y-junction, together with a high-order-mode bandpass filter. Two shunt-wound LPFGs are inscribed by CO2 laser in a two-mode fiber to achieve a 10 dB bandwidth of 50 nm and 51 nm at resonance wavelengths of 1530 nm and 1570 nm, respectively. Meanwhile, the Y-junction fabricated by lithography can be operated over S + C+L band to combine the converted LP11 mode. The presented ultra-broadband mode converter is able to achieve a mode conversion efficiency of 95%, together with a wavelength-dependent loss of less than 3 dB over the S + C+L band. This device has low modal crosstalk of 17 dB between the LP01 and LP11 modes, because most of the residual LP01 mode is further filtered by a high-order-mode bandpass filter at the output port of the Y-junction. The insertion loss of mode converter is estimated to be lower than 2.7 dB, due to the use of low loss polymer material during the fabrication. The proposed ultra-broadband LP11 mode converter with high purity is promising for the application of ultra-broadband mode-division-multiplexing transmission systems.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel broadband all-fiber mode converter is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Through writing a pair of superimposed long period fiber gratings (SLPFGs) in tow-mode fiber (TMF) with a CO2 laser, the mode converter can realize the conversion from LP01 to LP11 owing to the phase matching condition. Numerical and experimental results show that the bandwidth of this mode converter is 3 times broader than that of a single grating converter. The converter has low loss, high coupling efficiency, small size and is easy to fabricate, so it can be widely used in mode-division multiplexing.

Abstract:We investigated an all-fiber mode converter based on long-period fiber gratings (LPFGs) written in the few-mode fiber. Mode conversion between the fundamental core mode and different higher-order core modes (LP11, LP21, and LP02 modes) can be realized via a single LPFG with an efficiency of 99% at the resonance wavelength. Moreover, optimized mode conversion between the LP01 and LP21 modes can be realized by cascading two LPFGs with different grating pitches. The maximum conversion efficiency is estimated to be ∼99.5% at 1553 nm. The orbital angular momentum states with different topological charges (±1,±2) are demonstrated experimentally. The all-fiber LPFG mode converters could have promising applications in the mode-division multiplexing optical communications.

Abstract:We demonstrate the fabrication of a long-period fiber grating (LPFG) in a boron-doped single-mode fiber with a high-diffractive-order cladding mode (HDCM) near the turning point (TP). The simulations show that an LPFG with less than 0.2 duty cycles can couple light to the HDCM. An LPFG with a period of more than 400 μm can achieve strong mode coupling between the fundamental mode and the HDCM near the TP. The effect of the external refractive index on the transmission spectrum of a LPFG with different grating periods is investigated by simulations and experiments. With an increase in grating period, the spectral dip corresponding to the HDCM travels faster than the conventional dip, and overlapped dips appear in the transmission spectrum. High sensitivities of up to 13,497.7 nm/RIU and 0.77 nm/°C of, respectively, RI and temperature sensing can be achieved. Such LPFGs could be potentially used as optical filters and high-sensitivity sensors.

Abstract:Higher-order mode generation using long-period fiber grating (LPFG) has a lot of advantages such as simple structure and compatibility with optical fiber system. However, due to the large effective refractive index difference and very small cross-coupling coefficient between fundamental core mode and higher-order core modes in a few-mode fiber, it is difficult to achieve a high coupling efficiency and low insertion loss at the same time. In this paper, we demonstrated a simple model to illustrate the relationship between refractive index (RI) modulation and coupling coefficient in a CO2 laser LPFG fabrication system. Theoretical analysis shows that changing the RI modulation area from semicircle to sector with certain angle can significantly enhance the mode coupling between LP01 and LP21 modes. We also proposed an easy way who can achieve an angular modulation to fabricate LPFG which could generate second-order modes with a high efficiency as well as a low insertion loss. Experimental results are in good agreement with theoretical analysis. Finally, we get a LPFG mode converter who has a conversion efficiency of over 99% and an insertion loss of only 0.27 dB. Furthermore, the CO2 laser has almost no damage on the fiber structure. This fabrication method and analyzation model has a great guiding significance to regular the coupling coefficient and realize higher-order mode excitation in the future.

Abstract:Controlled excitation and regulation of LP11a and LP11b modes based on long-period fiber gratings (LPFGs) written in two-mode elliptical core fibers by CO2 laser are investigated theoretically and experimentally. The fabrication of LPFGs in a slightly elliptical core two-mode fiber (SEC-TMF) is demonstrated, which realizes the conversion of LP11a/b modes separately or simultaneously by changing the CO2 laser exposure direction in relation to the fiber axis with high efficiency of more than 98%. Furthermore, a method for regulating the mode conversion efficiency of LP11a/b modes is proposed by applying transverse loads in different directions on the LPFGs to introduce additional refractive index modulation. The feasibility of the method is verified by experimental results and theoretical analysis. Via applying a transverse load at a specific angle on the dual-wavelength resonant LPFG written in the SEC-TMF, the conversion efficiency of LP11b and LP11a is regulated from 97.4% and 71.3% to 33.1% and 98.3%, respectively. This method achieves secondary regulation of mode conversion by applying transverse load, which has the advantages of flexibility and reconfigurability.

Abstract:A multi-order broadband mode converter in a ring-core fiber (RCF) using a multi-pitch chirped long-period fiber grating (LPFG), where multiple pitches were introduced in each chirp to further increase the bandwidth, is proposed and demonstrated. The grating parameters were optimized both theoretically and experimentally to achieve broadband mode generation of OAM ± 2 and OAM ± 3 modes by increasing the number of chirps and pitches. The mode conversion efficiency is higher than 90% with a broadband of 57 nm from 1456 nm to 1513 nm and 51 nm from 1573 nm to 1624 nm, corresponding to the second-order OAM mode and third-order OAM mode, respectively. Additionally, the insertion loss is less than 0.8 dB, and the purity is over 90%. The demonstrated mode converter has successfully achieved simultaneous generation of multi-order broadband OAM modes in a RCF for the first time, which has promising potential for application in OAM mode-division multiplexing systems.

Abstract:Mode division multiplexing is a new communication technology, which increases the communication capacity by increasing the multiplexing dimension of patterns. This paper introduces a new type of long period fiber grating mode converter based on hybrid dual-core fiber. The beam propagation method is used to numerically analyze the mode conversion from LP01 to LP21 and LP02 mode by changing the core distance. From the simulation results, LP01 converts to LP21 and LP02 with different dual-core fiber structures. it can be seen that the mode converter realizes LP01 to LP21 and LP02. The purity of LP21 is up to 98%. The purity of LP02 is even up to 98%, and the 3dB bandwidth is 21nm.

Abstract:An all-fiber mode converter assisted by coiled-fiber long-period grating (CFLPG), which is formed by periodically coiling one thin tapered single-mode fiber (SMF) onto one thick straight tapered few-mode fiber (FMF), is experimentally demonstrated. Owing to the strong periodic modulation of the coiled tapered SMF to evanescent field of the straight tapered FMF, specific higher-order modes in the FMF can be successfully excited from the fundamental mode of the SMF. Moreover, coupling efficiency from fundamental mode of the SMF to specific higher-order mode of the FMF can be optimized by adjusting the number of the coiling period, which is beneficial for the design and fabrication of mode converter. This proposed structure can be extended to even higher-order mode conversion, and has flexibility in coupling efficiency optimization and compatibility with current optical fiber communication systems.

Abstract:As a crucial component of nonlinear polarization rotation (NPR) mode locking, optical fiber gratings offer advantages such as polarization modulation capability, stability, fiber compatibility, and preparation maturity, making them a vital technological foundation for achieving NPR mode locking. Here, a polarization-maintaining fiber helical long-period grating (PMF-HLPG) was designed and fabricated as a polarizer using the CO2-laser direct-write technique to realize the NPR effect. A homemade fiber Bragg grating (FBG) was also introduced into the laser system to enable a narrow-bandwidth lasing output and wavelength tunability. Based on the PMF-HLPG and FBG mentioned above, an all-fiber mode-locked laser with a spectra bandwidth of 0.15 nm was constructed to generate stable short pulses with a fundamental repetition rate of 12.7122 MHz and a pulse duration of 30.08 ps. In particular, its signal-to-noise ratio is up to 84.5 dB, showing the high stability of the laser. Further, the operating wavelength of the laser can be tuned from 1559.65 nm to 1560.29 nm via heating the FBG while maintaining its mode-locked state with stability. The results indicate that the PMF-HLPG could be used as a polarizer to meet the NPR mechanism for ultrashort pulse laser applications in optical communication, optical sensing, and biomedical imaging.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate an ultra-broadband mode converter based on a cascade chirped long-period fiber grating (CLPFG) written in a two-mode fiber. The mode converter can convert fundamental mode (${rm{HE}}_{11}^{even}$ and ${rm{HE}}_{11}^{odd}$ modes) into the first order cylindrical vector (CV) modes (TE01, TM01, ${rm{HE}}_{21}^{even}$ and ${rm{HE}}_{21}^{{odd}}$ modes). We design and analyze the mode conversion characteristics of this kind of grating in theory. The simulation results show a 10 dB bandwidth of 170 nm and 20 dB bandwidth of 145 nm can be achieved by optimizing the parameters of the CLPFG. In the terms of experiment, we achieve the broadband mode converter with 10 dB bandwidth of 170 nm from 1472 nm to 1642 nm.

Abstract:We demonstrated the fabrication of orbital angular momentum (OAM) mode convertors (MCs) operating at 1.3–2.1-μm waveband based on the helical long-period gratings (HLPGs) inscribed in the few-mode fiber (FMF) using a CO2 laser. The ±1st, ±2nd, and ±3rd OAM mode can be directly generated by the HLPGs with efficiencies of more than 90%. The torsion sensitivities of the first-, second-, and third-order OAM modes in 2-μm waveband are 0.52, 0.55, and 0.36 nm/(rad/m), which has increased by 5.8 times, 2.8 times, and 1.6 times compared to that in 1.3-μm waveband, respectively. The strain sensitivities of the first-, second-, and third- order OAM modes in 2-μm waveband are −4.2, −4.0, and −4.9 pm/ $\mu \varepsilon $ , which has increased by 2.3 times, 2 times, and 2.2 times compared to that in 1.3-μm waveband, respectively. The proposed OAM mode MCs based on the HLPGs can function as not only promotion of optical communication system but also high-torsion sensitivity sensors in the sensing field.

Abstract:Broadband generation of orbital angular momentum (OAM) beam in fiber has a lot of applications in optical communications and fiber sensing. However, the efficient broadband generation of second-order OAM beam using long-period fiber grating (LPFG) is still a great challenge due to the low intermodal overlap. In this paper, we achieved a 108.96 nm efficient broadband generation of second-order OAM beams with a conversion efficiency over 95 in experiment using an angular modulated cascading LPFG with low insertion loss. By changing the refractive index modulation area in certain angle, not only the coupling between fundamental mode and second-order mode in fiber can be greatly enhanced, but also second-order even and odd modes are generated with approximately equal magnitudes, which is very beneficial to high-purity OAM beams generation. Finally, by choosing proper cascading parameters and an adaptive refractive index modulation fabrication strategy, we achieved a LPFG mode converter with a conversion efficiency over 95 in a 108.96 nm from 1520.96 nm to 1629.92 nm. The insertion loss of the LPFG is measured only 0.48 dB.

Abstract:A novel in-fiber polarizer based on a long-period fiber grating (LPFG) is written by using a focused CO2 laser beam to notch a photonic crystal fiber periodically. Such a polarizer exhibits a high polarization extinction ratio of more than 20 dB over a wide wavelength range of similar to 11 mn near 1550 nm and a very low temperature sensitivity of 3.9 pm/degrees C, which overcomes the disadvantages of the temperature sensitivity of other in-fiber polarizers created on conventional single-mode fiber. Abstract:We propose mode couplers and converters based on dual-core hollow-core photonic bandgap fiber (HC-PBGF) structures, which might be potential solutions for integrated all-fiber multiplexers or demultiplexers of a mode-division multiplexed (MDM) transmission system using HC-PBGFs. Coupling properties of LP01 and LP11 mode in the mode coupler are investigated and applied to mode separators and polarization separators. Mode transition from LP01 to LP11 and LP21 mode are demonstrated in the mode converter whose smaller core is expected as input end and matched with single-mode fiber. The coupling between fundamental mode and high-order modes is accomplished through the resonant effect, which is fulfilled by modifying the structure parameter of the smaller core. Such mode converters based on dual-core HC-PBGF could be a promising substitute for the free-space coupling device, which is costly and not suitable for integration design in MDM systems and other hollow-core fiber experiments and applications.
