Abstract:The author reports a conceptually new approach to superconducting niobium (Nb) mesowires in high yields from layered compounds (NbSe2) by solid-state pyrolysis. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy and selected-area electron diffraction demonstrate that the mesowires are single crystalline, grow along the [001] direction, and have specific facets. Unlike the previous electrodeposition routes within templates, a possible vapor-solid interaction mechanism was first proposed for component-selective epitaxial growth of one-dimensional Nb lattices where vapor-assisted collapse of NbSe2 crystal structure occurs through disposing of Se vapor phase matrix at enhanced temperatures.

Abstract:NbSe2 is a typical transition metal dichalcogenide with a rich variety of electronic ground states existing in its nanostructures, including two-dimensional superconductivity and charge density wave. However, the direct growth of high-quality single-crystalline NbSe2 nanostructures is still challenging, which limits their applications in electronic devices. Here, we report the growth of high-quality NbSe2 nanoplates by a single-step chemical vapour deposition. Their temperature and magnetic-field dependent superconducting behaviors were investigated by four-terminal devices fabricated on individual nanostructures. The NbSe2 nanoplates show two-dimensional characteristics of superconducting transitions and strong anisotropy with magnetic field orientation, providing potential platforms for the exploration of new physics in nanoelectronic devices.
Mass Production of Graphene-Like Single-Crystalline Nbse2 (004) Nanosheets Via Intercalant-Assisted Thermal Cleavage

Abstract:The author reports the mass production of dense inorganic graphene-like exfoliated single-crystalline niobium diselenide (NbSe2) (004) multilayered nanosheets standing on quartz substrate. Similar to the most-used micromechanical cleavage to exfoliated NbSe2 nanosheets, the synthesis was performed starting directly from bulk powdered counterparts, but using a novel type of substrate-irrelevant vapor-phase exfoliation. A possible intercalant-assisted thermal cleavage growth mechanism for the NbSe2-derived nanosheets, including a combination of intercalant injection-atomic delamination-thermal exfoliation-lateral growth, is discussed. This two-component nanosheet-forming technique appears to potentially work on homologous series of sandwich-type inorganic layered 2H transition-metal dichalcogenide compounds under proper experimental conditions as well.

Abstract:We studied the electric field effect on superconductivity in atomically thin flakes of NbSe2 prepared by mechanical exfoliation. We found that these NbSe2 flakes are superconducting down to a thickness of a single unit cell consisting of two molecular layers of NbSe2 with an onset superconducting transition temperature (T-c) up to 2.5 K. We demonstrated that the T-c of the thinnest flakes can be modulated by an applied gate voltage with a T-c shift as large as 200 mK, which is larger than expected from a simple consideration based on Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer theory. We discuss the possible reasons for the observed enhanced electric field modulation of T-c.

Abstract:Pure and high-quality single-crystal Nb(001) thin films with thicknesses ranging from 40 AA to 1000 AA were grown epitaxially on NaCl(001) substrates by an UHV E-beam evaporation technique. TEM observations, resistivity and superconducting transition temperature measurements were carried out. A drastic fall-off in transition temperature and conductivity was observed in ultrathin single-crystal Nb films. The results are discussed within the framework of the existing theories and a strain-induced 'double-layer' model is proposed. Data for polycrystalline Nb thin films on glass substrates deposited under exactly the same evaporation conditions as the single-crystal films are also presented for comparison.
The transport properties of Nb-doped trichalcogenide Ta0.8Nb0.2S3

Abstract:Single crystals of TaS3 and Nb-doped Ta0.8Nb0.2S3 were grown by the usual vapor-transport method. The low-field DC resistivity, thermoelectric power, and I–V characteristics of both samples have been measured. Non-linear I–V characteristics due to possible CDW transition were found in Ta0.8Nb0.2S3 at temperatures up to 400K and the temperature dependence of resistivity remained insulator-like even when the temperature was as high as 400K. Possible CDW transition in Ta0.8Nb0.2S3 crystals at temperatures above 400K is suggested and need further studies to confirm.
Anisotropy in Electronic and Magneto-transport of 2D superconductor NbSe$_2$

Abstract:This article reports the successful synthesis of single crystalline two-dimensional thin flakes of NbSe$_2$. The XRD pattern of the grown crystal ensured its crystallization in a single phase with a hexagonal structure. The EDAX endorsed the stoichiometry of the as grown sample. To study the vibrational modes, the Raman spectra were recorded, which exhibited the expected four Raman active modes. The resistance vs temperature measurement showed a well-established superconducting transition (Tc) at 7.3 K. The ZFC (Zero-Field Cooled) & FC (Field Cooled) magnetization curves, as well as the isothermal MH (Magnetization vs. field) measurements, have been performed for both in plane and out-of-plane H directions. Distinct anisotropy is observed in both magnetization and magneto-transport measurements with field direction, leading to different critical fields (Hc). Out-of-plane magneto-transport data hints towards the existence of a filamentary state. The density functional theory (DFT) has been used to study the band structure of NbSe$_2$. Although the bulk band structure confirmed metallic behavior, the same for mono-layers of NbSe$_2$ within the GGA+U framework showed a band gap of 1.17eV. The article addresses the anisotropy in the electronic and magneto-transport of 2D superconductor NbSe$_2$.

Abstract:We present the preparation and measurements of nanowires of single-crystal NbSe2. These nanowires were prepared on ultrathin (≲10 nm) flakes of NbSe2 mechanically exfoliated from a bulk single crystal using a process combining electron beam lithography and reactive plasma etching. The electrical contacts to the nanowires were prepared using Ti/Au. Our technique, which overcomes several limitations of methods developed previously for fabricating superconducting nanowires, also allows for the preparation of complex superconducting nanostructures with a desired geometry. Current-voltage characteristics of individual superconducting single-crystal nanowires with widths down to 30 nm and cross-sectional areas as low as 270 nm2 were measured.

Abstract:Recent progresses in the growth and fabrication techniques for preparing crystalline two-dimensional (2D) superconductors have stimulated intense interest in the studies of the electronic properties of these systems. Here we investigate the superconducting transport properties based on chemical vapor deposition-grown thin NbC crystals consisting of network structures. The 2D character of the superconductivity in individual NbC crystals is revealed by examining the angular dependence of magnetotransport measurements. At low temperatures, the samples show nonmonotonic double-step superconducting transitions as a function of temperature and magnetic field. We demonstrate that the observed transport characteristics can be understood in terms of coupled Josephson junctions forming between isolated NbC crystals, including the effects of Josephson and quasiparticle tunneling. In particular, detailed analysis of the magnetic field-driven transition suggests the existence of quantum flux-creep regime at low temperatures and small magnetic fields in such thin NbC superconducting crystals. Our work underlines the importance of the morphology on the transport properties of 2D superconducting crystals, providing a comprehensive understanding of crystalline 2D superconductors.

Abstract:We report experimental investigation of the resistivity and Nernst effect in two-dimensional (2D) NbSe2 crystals.A strongly enhanced Nernst effect,100 times larger than that in bulk NbSe2,caused by moving vortices is observed in thin film.It is found that in the low temperature,high magnetic field regime,pinning effects show little dependence on the thickness and resistivity of the superconductor films.Strong Nernst signals persist above the superconducting transition,suggesting that the Nernst effect is a sensitive probe to superconducting fluctuations.A magnetic field induced superconductor-insulator transition (SIT) is evident,which is surprising in that such a SIT usually takes place in disordered dirty superconductors,while our samples are highly crystalline and close to the clean limit.Hence,our results expand the scope of SIT into 2D crystal clean superconductors.

Abstract:The controlled tunability of superconductivity in low-dimensional materials may enable new quantum devices. Particularly in triplet or topological superconductors, tunneling devices such as Josephson junctions, etc., can demonstrate exotic functionalities. The tunnel barrier, an insulating or normal material layer separating two superconductors, is a key component for the junctions. Thin layers of NbSe2 have been shown as a superconductor with strong spin orbit coupling, which can give rise to topological superconductivity if driven by a large magnetic exchange field. Here we demonstrate the superconductor–insulator transitions in epitaxially grown few-layer NbSe2 with wafer-scale uniformity on insulating substrates. We provide the electrical transport, Raman spectroscopy, cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction characterizations of the insulating phase. We show that the superconductor–insulator transition is driven by strain, which also causes characteristic energy shifts of the Raman modes. Unveiling the nucleation and growth of Zr oxide precipitates of internally oxidized Nb3Sn superconductors

Abstract:We report on atomic-scale analyses of nucleation and growth of Zr oxide precipitates and the microstructural evolution of internally oxidized Nb3Sn wires for high-field superconducting magnet applications, utilizing atom probe tomography (APT), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and first-principles calculations. APT analyses reveal that prior to interfacial reactions at Nb/Nb3Sn interfaces, Zr atoms in an unreacted Nb-1Zr-4Ta (at.%) alloy form clusters with O atoms owing to their high affinity for oxygen and are segregated at grain boundaries (GBs) in the Nb grains. Then, nucleation of Zr oxide precipitates occurs in Nb3Sn and at Nb3Sn/Nb interfaces, driven by the small solubility of Zr and O in Nb3Sn compared to Nb. Quantitative APT and TEM analyses of Zr oxide precipitates in Nb3Sn layers demonstrate the nucleation, growth, and coarsening processes of Zr oxide precipitates in Nb3Sn layers. A high number density of Zr oxide nanoprecipitates is observed in the Nb3Sn layers, ~10^23 per m^3, with a mean precipitate diam. <10 nm at 625 oC and 700 oC, which provide pinning centers for grain refinement of Nb3Sn, <100 nm diam., and serve as pinning sites for fluxons. First-principles calculations and classical nucleation theory are employed to describe the nucleation of Zr oxide precipitates in Nb3Sn: energy barriers and the critical radius for nucleation of Zr oxide precipitates in Nb3Sn. Our research yields the kinetic pathways for nucleation and growth of Zr oxide precipitates and the microstructural evolution of Nb3Sn layers, which helps to improve the fabrication process of internally oxidized Nb3Sn wires for high-field superconducting magnets.

Abstract:Layered quasi-two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs), which can be readily made in ultrathin films, offer excellent opportunities for studying how dimensionality affects electronic structure and physical properties. Among all TMDCs, NbSe2 is of special interest; bulk NbSe2 hosts a charge-density-wave phase at low temperatures and has the highest known superconducting transition temperature, and these properties can be substantially modified in the ultrathin film limit. Motivated by these effects, we report herein a study of few-layer NbSe2 films, with a well-defined single-domain orientation, epitaxially grown on Gallium Arsenide (GaAs). Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) was used to determine the electronic band structure and the Fermi surface as a function of layer thickness; first-principles band structure calculations were performed for comparison. The results show interesting changes as the film thickness increases from a monolayer (ML) to several layers. The most notable changes occur between a ML and a bilayer, where the inversion symmetry in bulk NbSe2 is preserved in the bilayer but not in the ML. The results illustrate some basic dimensional effects and provide a basis for further exploring and understanding the properties of NbSe2.

Abstract:Recent advances in the synthesis of intercalated compounds have opened new avenues for exploring novel magnetic properties. This work focuses on the synthesis of high-quality single crystals of NbCo1.1Te2, achieved through a meticulously optimized chemical vapor transport method that facilitates effective cobalt intercalation into the van der Waals gaps of NbCoTe2. Comprehensive characterizations, including magnetic susceptibility, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), and magnetoresistance measurements, revealed pronounced room-temperature ferromagnetism and significant magnetic anisotropy, along with a confirmed metallic nature of NbCo1.1Te2. These findings underscore the transformative effects of cobalt intercalation on the physical properties of NbCo1.1Te2, demonstrating its promising potential for advanced electronic and spintronic applications, and laying the groundwork for future research on related materials.
Structural and Superconducting Properties of Ultrathin Ir Films on Nb(110)

Abstract:The ongoing quest for unambiguous signatures of topological superconductivity and Majorana modes in magnet-superconductor hybrid systems creates a high demand for suitable superconducting substrates. Materials that incorporate $s$-wave superconductivity with a wide energy gap, large spin-orbit coupling, and high surface quality, which enable the atom-by-atom construction of magnetic nanostructures using the tip of a scanning tunneling microscope, are particularly desired. Since single materials rarely fulfill all these requirements we propose and demonstrate the growth of thin films of a high-Z metal, Ir, on a surface of the elemental superconductor with the largest energy gap, Nb. We find a strained Ir(110)/Nb(110)-oriented superlattice for one to two atomic layer thin films, which transitions to a compressed Ir(111) surface for 10 atomic layer thick films. Using tunneling spectroscopy we observe proximity-induced superconductivity in the latter Ir(111) film with a hard gap $\Delta$ that is $85.3\%$ of that of bare Nb(110).

Abstract:We report a systematic study of thickness-dependent superconductivity and carrier transport properties in exfoliated layered 2H-NbS2. Hall-effect measurements reveal 2H-NbS2 in its normal state to be a p-type metal with hole mobility of 1-3 cm2/Vs. The superconducting transition temperature is found to decrease with thickness. We find that the suppression of superconductivity is due to disorder resulting from the incorporation of atmospheric oxygen and a reduced hole density. Cross-section transmission electron microscope (TEM) imaging reveals a chemical change of NbS2 in ambient conditions, resulting in the formation of amorphous oxide layers sandwiching crystalline layered NbS2. Though few-nm-thick 2H-NbS2 completely converts to amorphous oxide in ambient conditions, PMMA encapsulation prevents further chemical change and preserves superconductivity.

Abstract:The enhanced accelerating performance of Nb 3 Sn-coated Nb superconducting radio frequency (SRF) cavities is severely limited by quenching sites at material defects formed during the Nb 3 Sn film growth procedure. In this work, we aimed to understand the complex surface-mediated interactions that drive initial Nb 3 Sn formation during the Sn vapor deposition procedure used to fabricate Nb 3 Sn coated SRF cavities. Nb substrates were modified, coated with Sn, and then characterized using an ultra-high vacuum (UHV) chamber equipped with metal deposition and in situ surface analysis capabilities. The atomic structure of the Nb oxide surface was modified to assess how the Nb surface defect density and crystallographic orientation impact the size of nucleated Sn islands and relative Nb 3 Sn growth rates. Formed Nb 3 Sn/Nb surfaces were visualized using ex situ scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and post-deposition annealing revealed Sn desorption and Nb 3 Sn degradation pathways. Finally, we showed that the Sn deposition conditions can be modified to overcome the growth barriers that are imposed by the Nb morphology. This study provides a unique bridge between fundamental growth studies in pristine conditions with observed phenomena of Nb 3 Sn grown on realistic cavity surfaces.

Abstract:Chemical intercalation has great potential to realize exotic electrical properties in van der Waals materials. Here we report the Ge intercalation in layered Nb dichalcogenides NbX2 (X = Se and S), which can induce ultrahigh conductivity and novel transport properties. Using chemical vapor transport method, single crystals of two intercalated materials Ge0.33NbS2 and Ge0.26NbSe2 were grown. Despite the similar structures with edge-sharing NbX6 triangular prism, the intercalated Ge show different configurations in these two compounds, which is ordered in sulfide but disordered in selenide. The measurements on transport properties demonstrated that both Ge0.33NbS2 and Ge0.26NbSe2 are metallic and interestingly, the conductivity of Ge0.33NbS2 at 300 K reaches 6.83 × 104 S•cm-1, which is higher than other metallic transition metal dichalcogenides and even comparable to the electrode material Pt. Ge0.33NbS2 also shows high carrier mobility (83.40 cm2 V-1 s-1 at 300 K) and unsaturated linear magnetoresistance, while negative magnetoresistance was observed in Ge0.26NbSe2 below 10 K. The first-principles calculations indicated that the ultrahigh conductivity in Ge0.33NbS2 is ascribed to the non-trivial topological bands near the Fermi surface. Our work highlights the effective regulation of chemical intercalation on transport properties of van der Waals materials via modulating the band structures.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have a range of unique physics properties and could be used in the development of electronics, photonics, spintronics, and quantum computing devices. The mechanical exfoliation technique of microsize TMD flakes has attracted particular interest due to its simplicity and cost effectiveness. However, for most applications, large-area and high-quality films are preferred. Furthermore, when the thickness of crystalline films is down to the 2D limit (monolayer), exotic properties can be expected due to the quantum confinement and symmetry breaking. In this paper, we have successfully prepared macro-size atomically flat monolayer NbSe2 films on bilayer graphene terminated surface of 6H-SiC(0001) substrates by a molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) method. The films exhibit an onset superconducting critical transition temperature (Tconset) above 6 K and the zero resistance superconducting critical transition temperature (Tczero) up to 2.40 K. Simultaneously, the transport measurements at high magnetic fields and low temperatures reveal that the parallel characteristic field Bc//(T = 0) is above 5 times of the paramagnetic limiting field, consistent with Zeeman-protected Ising superconductivity mechanism. Besides, by ultralow temperature electrical transport measurements, the monolayer NbSe2 film shows the signature of quantum Griffiths singularity (QGS) when approaching the zero-temperature quantum critical point.
