Abstract:We theoretically demonstrate nontrivial topological effects for a probe field in a Raman medium undergoing molecular modulation processes. The medium is driven by two noncollinear pump beams. We show that the angle between the pumps is related to an effective gauge potential and an effective magnetic field for the probe field in the synthetic space consisting of a synthetic frequency dimension and a spatial dimension. As a result of such an effective magnetic field, the probe field can exhibit a topologically protected one-way edge state in the synthetic space, as well as Landau levels which manifest as suppression of both diffraction and sideband generation. Our work identifies a previously unexplored route towards creating topological photonics effects and highlights an important connection between topological photonics and nonlinear optics.

Abstract:The concept of gauge field is a cornerstone of modern physics and the synthetic gauge field has emerged as a new way to manipulate particles in many disciplines. In optics, several schemes of Abelian synthetic gauge fields have been proposed. Here, we introduce a new platform for realizing synthetic SU(2) non-Abelian gauge fields acting on two-dimensional optical waves in a wide class of anisotropic materials and discover novel phenomena. We show that a virtual non-Abelian Lorentz force arising from material anisotropy can induce light beams to travel along Zitterbewegung trajectories even in homogeneous media. We further design an optical non-Abelian Aharonov-Bohm system which results in the exotic spin density interference effect. We can extract the Wilson loop of an arbitrary closed optical path from a series of gauge fixed points in the interference fringes. Our scheme offers a new route to study SU(2) gauge field related physics using optics.

Abstract:Quantized charge pumping is a robust adiabatic phenomenon uniquely existing in topologically nontrivial systems. Such topological pumping not only brings fundamental insights to the evolution of states under the protection of topology but also provides a vital approach for the study of higher-dimensional topological phases. In this work, we demonstrate topological pumping in an acoustic waveguide system by showing the successful pumping of topological boundary states (TBSs) across the bulk to the opposite edge. By exploring the finite-size induced mini-gap between two TBS bands, we unveil the quantitative condition for the breakdown of adiabaticity in the system by demonstrating the Landau-Zener transition with both theory and experiments. Our results not only open a new route for future investigations of topological acoustics but also establish non-adiabatic transitions as a new degree of freedom for manipulating topological states.

Abstract:We generalize the concept of photonic gauge potential in real space by introducing an additional "synthetic" frequency dimension in addition to the real space dimensions. As an illustration, we consider a one-dimensional array of ring resonators, each supporting a set of resonant modes having a frequency comb with spacing Omega, and undergoing a refractive index modulation at the modulation frequency equal to Omega. We show that the modulation phase provides a gauge potential in the synthetic two-dimensional space with the dimensions being the frequency and the spatial axes. Such a gauge potential can create a topologically protected one-way edge state in the synthetic space that is useful for high-efficiency generation of higher-order side bands. Abstract:We explore a single degenerate optical cavity supporting a synthetic two-dimensional space, which includes the frequency and the orbital angular momentum (OAM) axes of light. We create the effective gauge potential inside this synthetic space and show that the system exhibits topologically protected one-way edge states along the OAM axis at the boundaries of the frequency dimension. in this synthetic space, we present a robust generation and manipulation of entanglement between the frequency and OAM of photons. Our Letter shows that a higher-dimensional synthetic space involving multiple degrees of freedom of light can be achieved in a "zero-dimensional" spatial structure, pointing towards a unique platform to explore topological photonics and to realize potential applications in optical communications and quantum information processing.

Abstract:We study the light evolution through a Raman-active medium, where a pair of fields pump molecules near -resonantly and excite the molecular coherence. A synthetic lattice including multiple frequency sidebands via the coherent Raman process is constructed. By varying the density of molecules in the light propagation direction, the system can present a lattice model undergoing dynamic modulations. Further considering the frequency -dependent couplings between synthetic lattice sites, we explore intriguing phenomena, including spectral Bloch oscillation and super Bloch oscillation with asymmetric patterns, which leads to interesting frequency-conversion phenomena with the Raman sideband generations. Our work could be useful for future experiments in coherent Raman sideband processes towards ultrashort pulse generations and higher-frequency conversion. (c) 2023 Optica Publishing Group

Abstract:Synthetic gauge fields have recently emerged, arising in the context of quantum simulations, topological matter, and the protected transportation of excitations against defects. For example, an ultracold atom experiences a light-induced effective magnetic field when tunneling in an optical lattice, and offering a platform to simulate the quantum Hall effect and topological insulators. Similarly, the magnetic field associated with photon transport between sites has been demonstrated in a coupled resonator array. Here, we report the first experimental demonstration of a synthetic gauge field in the virtual lattices of bosonic modes in a single optomechanical resonator. By employing degenerate clockwise and counterclockwise optical modes and a mechanical mode, a controllable synthetic gauge field is realized by tuning the phase of the driving lasers. The nonreciprocal conversion between the three modes is realized for different synthetic magnetic fluxes. As a proof-of-principle demonstration, we also show the dynamics of the system under a fast-varying synthetic gauge field, and demonstrate synthetic electric field. Our demonstration not only provides a versatile and controllable platform for studying synthetic gauge fields in high dimensions but also enables an exploration of ultrafast gauge field tuning with a large dynamic range, which is restricted for a magnetic field.

Abstract:The massless solutions to the Dirac equation are described by the so-called Weyl Hamiltonian. The Weyl equation requires a particle to have linear dispersion in all three dimensions while being doubly degenerate at a single momentum point. These Weyl points are topological monopoles of quantized Berry flux exhibiting numerous unusual properties. We performed angle-resolved microwave transmission measurements through a double-gyroid photonic crystal with inversion-breaking where Weyl points have been theoretically predicted to occur. The excited bulk states show two linear dispersion bands touching at four isolated points in the three-dimensional Brillouin zone, indicating the observation of Weyl points. This work paves the way to a variety of photonic topological phenomena in three dimensions.
Nonlinear Topological Photonic Insulator in Synthetic Space

Abstract:As an emerging field, nonlinear topological photonics attracts great attention nowadays, where pioneering works show interesting phenomena including topological edge solitons and nonlinearity-induced coupling of light into topological edge states. In this work, the nonlinear effects in a photonic topological insulator in the synthetic space including the frequency axis of light, in a ring resonant array under dynamic modulations are studied, where the four-wave mixing nonlinear process is included. Such nonlinear process not only induces local interactions, but also creates long-range interactions in the frequency dimension. These results show destruction on topologically protected edge states when the nonlinear effects are increasing. Moreover, it also breaks the symmetry in the synthetic space as well as the band structure, which reflects different propagation behaviors for the different input sources with positive and negative frequency shifts and exhibits short-time robustness in weak nonlinear cases. This work hence explores the role of nonlinear effects in affecting the edge modes in the synthetic space, which may be useful in quantum many-body simulations and find possible applications in information processing.
Non-Abelian dynamical gauge field and topological superfluids in optical Raman lattice

Abstract:We propose an experimental scheme to realize non-Abelian dynamical gauge field for ultracold fermions, which induces a novel pairing mechanism of topological superfluidity. The dynamical gauge fields arise from nontrivial interplay effect between the strong Zeeman splitting and Hubbard interaction in a two-dimensional (2D) optical Raman lattice. The spin-flip transitions are forbidden by the large Zeeman detuning, but are restored when the Zeeman splitting is compensated by Hubbard interaction. This scheme allows to generate a dynamical non-Abelian gauge field that leads to a Dirac type correlated 2D spin-orbit interaction depending on local state configurations. The topological superfluid from a novel pairing driven by 2D dynamical gauge fields is reached, with analytic and numerical results being obtained. Our work may open up a door to emulate non-Abelian dynamical gauge fields and correlated topological phases with experimental feasibility.

Abstract:Tremendous efforts are devoted to the research of exotic photonic topological states, in which Floquet systems suggest new engineered topological phases and provide a powerful tool to manipulate the optical fields. Here, a gauge-induced topological state localized at the interface between two gauge-shifted Floquet photonic lattices with the same topological order is demonstrated. The quasienergy band structures reveal that these interface modes belong to the Floquet pi modes, which are further found to enable an asymmetric topological transport of this interface mode thanks to the flexible control of the Floquet gauge. The intriguing propagations of the gauge-induced topological states are experimentally verified in a silicon waveguides platform at near-infrared wavelengths, which show broadband working wavelengths and robustness against the structural fluctuations. This work provides a new route in manipulating optical topological modes by Floquet engineering and inspires more possibilities in photonics integrations.
Light-Driven Raman Coherence as a Non-Thermal Route to Ultrafast Topology Switching

Abstract:A grand challenge underlies the entire field of topology-enabled quantum logic and information science: how to establish topological control principles driven by quantum coherence and understand the time-dependence of such periodic driving? Here we demonstrate a THz pulse-induced phase transition in Dirac materials that is periodically driven by vibrational coherence due to excitation of the lowest Raman-active mode. Above a critical field threshold, there emerges a long-lived metastable phase with unique Raman coherent phonon-assisted switching dynamics, absent for optical pumping. The switching also manifest itself by non-thermal spectral shape, relaxation slowing down near the Lifshitz transition where the critical Dirac point (DP) occurs, and diminishing signals at the same temperature that the Berry curvature induced Anomalous Hall Effect varnishes. These results, together with first-principles modeling, identify a mode-selective Raman coupling that drives the system from strong to weak topological insulators, STI to WTI, with a Dirac semimetal phase established at a critical atomic displacement controlled by the phonon pumping. Harnessing of vibrational coherence can be extended to steer symmetry-breaking transitions, i.e., Dirac to Weyl ones, with implications on THz topological quantum gate and error correction applications.

Abstract:We propose a straightforward and effective approach to design, by strain-engineering, photonic topological insulators supporting high quality factors edge states. Chiral strain-engineering creates opposite synthetic gauge fields in two domains resulting in Landau levels with the same energy spacing but different topological numbers. The boundary of the two topological domains hosts robust time-reversal and spin-momentum-locked edge states, exhibiting high quality factors due to continuous strain modulation. By shaping the synthetic gauge field, we obtain a remarkable field confinement and tunability, with the strain strongly affecting the degree of localization of the edge states. Notably the two-domain design stabilizes the strain-induced topological edge state. The large potential bandwidth of the strain-engineering and the opportunity to induce the mechanical stress at the fabrication stage enables large scalability for many potential applications in photonics, such as tunable microcavities, new lasers and information processing devices, including the quantum regime.

Abstract:We extend the $t-z$ mapping formalism of time-dependent paraxial optics by identifying configurations displaying a synthetic magnetic vector potential, leading to a non-trivial band topology in propagating geometries. We consider an inhomogeneous 1D array of coupled optical waveguides beyond the standard monochromatic approximation, and show that the wave equation describing paraxial propagation of optical pulses can be recast in the form of a Schrödinger equation, including a synthetic magnetic field whose strength can be controlled via the transverse spatial gradient of the waveguide properties across the array. We use an experimentally-motivated model of a laser-written waveguide array to demonstrate that this synthetic magnetic field can be engineered in realistic setups and can produce interesting observable effects such as cyclotron motion, a controllable Hall drift of the wavepacket displacement in space or time, and unidirectional propagation in chiral edge states. These results significantly extend the variety of physics that can be explored within propagating geometries and pave the way for exploiting this platform for higher-dimensional topological physics and strongly correlated fluids of light.

Abstract:Topological phases in spinless non-Hermitian models have been widely studied both theoretically and experimentally in some artificial materials using photonics and photonics. In this work, we investigate the interplay between non-Hermitian loss and gain and non-Abelian gauge potential realized in a two-component superconducting circuit. In our model, the non-Hermiticity along only gives rise to trivial gain and loss to the states; while the non-Abelian gauge along gives rise to flying butterfly spectra and associated edge modes, which in photonics can be directly measured by the intensity of photons at the boundaries. These two terms do not commute, and their interplay can give rise to several intriguing non-Hermitian phases, including the fully gapped quantum spin Hall (QSH) phase, gapless QSH phase, trivial gapped phase and gapless metallic phase. The bulk-edge correspondence is absent, and we find that during the closing of energy gap in the gapped QSH phase, the system enters the gapless QSH phase regime which still supports topological edge modes. Our proposed model in this work has potential to be realized immediately, in regarding of the huge progresses achieved in quantum computation based on superconducting circuits.

Synthetic gauge fields enable high-order topology on Brillouin real projective plane

Abstract:The topology of the Brillouin zone, foundational in topological physics, is always assumed to be a torus. We theoretically report the construction of Brillouin real projective plane ($\mathrm{RP}^2$) and the appearance of quadrupole insulating phase, which are enabled by momentum-space nonsymmorphic symmetries stemming from $\mathbb{Z}_2$ synthetic gauge fields. We show that the momentum-space nonsymmorphic symmetries quantize bulk polarization and Wannier-sector polarization nonlocally across different momenta, resulting in quantized corner charges and an isotropic binary bulk quadrupole phase diagram, where the phase transition is triggered by a bulk energy gap closing. Under open boundary conditions, the nontrivial bulk quadrupole phase manifests either trivial or nontrivial edge polarization, resulting from the violation of momentum-space nonsymmorphic symmetries under lattice termination. We present a concrete design for the $\mathrm{RP}^2$ quadrupole insulator based on acoustic resonator arrays and discuss its feasibility in optics, mechanics, and electrical circuits. Our results show that deforming the Brillouin manifold creates opportunities for realizing high-order band topology.
