Abstract:We theoretically demonstrate nontrivial topological effects for a probe field in a Raman medium undergoing molecular modulation processes. The medium is driven by two noncollinear pump beams. We show that the angle between the pumps is related to an effective gauge potential and an effective magnetic field for the probe field in the synthetic space consisting of a synthetic frequency dimension and a spatial dimension. As a result of such an effective magnetic field, the probe field can exhibit a topologically protected one-way edge state in the synthetic space, as well as Landau levels which manifest as suppression of both diffraction and sideband generation. Our work identifies a previously unexplored route towards creating topological photonics effects and highlights an important connection between topological photonics and nonlinear optics.

Abstract:We generalize the concept of photonic gauge potential in real space by introducing an additional "synthetic" frequency dimension in addition to the real space dimensions. As an illustration, we consider a one-dimensional array of ring resonators, each supporting a set of resonant modes having a frequency comb with spacing Omega, and undergoing a refractive index modulation at the modulation frequency equal to Omega. We show that the modulation phase provides a gauge potential in the synthetic two-dimensional space with the dimensions being the frequency and the spatial axes. Such a gauge potential can create a topologically protected one-way edge state in the synthetic space that is useful for high-efficiency generation of higher-order side bands. Abstract:We explore a single degenerate optical cavity supporting a synthetic two-dimensional space, which includes the frequency and the orbital angular momentum (OAM) axes of light. We create the effective gauge potential inside this synthetic space and show that the system exhibits topologically protected one-way edge states along the OAM axis at the boundaries of the frequency dimension. in this synthetic space, we present a robust generation and manipulation of entanglement between the frequency and OAM of photons. Our Letter shows that a higher-dimensional synthetic space involving multiple degrees of freedom of light can be achieved in a "zero-dimensional" spatial structure, pointing towards a unique platform to explore topological photonics and to realize potential applications in optical communications and quantum information processing.

Abstract:The concept of gauge field is a cornerstone of modern physics and the synthetic gauge field has emerged as a new way to manipulate particles in many disciplines. In optics, several schemes of Abelian synthetic gauge fields have been proposed. Here, we introduce a new platform for realizing synthetic SU(2) non-Abelian gauge fields acting on two-dimensional optical waves in a wide class of anisotropic materials and discover novel phenomena. We show that a virtual non-Abelian Lorentz force arising from material anisotropy can induce light beams to travel along Zitterbewegung trajectories even in homogeneous media. We further design an optical non-Abelian Aharonov-Bohm system which results in the exotic spin density interference effect. We can extract the Wilson loop of an arbitrary closed optical path from a series of gauge fixed points in the interference fringes. Our scheme offers a new route to study SU(2) gauge field related physics using optics.

Abstract:We show that a single ring resonator undergoing dynamic modulation can be used to create a synthetic space with an arbitrary dimension. In such a system, the phases of the modulation can be used to create a photonic gauge potential in high dimensions. As an illustration of the implication of this concept, we show that the Haldane model, which exhibits nontrivial topology in two dimensions, can be implemented in the synthetic space using three rings. Our results point to a route toward exploring higher-dimensional topological physics in low-dimensional physical structures. The dynamics of photons in such synthetic spaces also provides a mechanism to control the spectrum of light.
Non-Abelian lattice gauge fields in the photonic synthetic frequency dimension

Abstract:Non-Abelian gauge fields provide a conceptual framework for the description of particles having spins. The theoretical importance of non-Abelian gauge fields motivates their experimental synthesis and explorations. Here, we demonstrate non-Abelian lattice gauge fields for photons. In the study of gauge fields, lattice models are essential for the understanding of their implications in extended systems. We utilize the platform of synthetic frequency dimensions, which enables the study of lattice physics in a scalable and programmable way. We observe Dirac cones at time-reversal-invariant momenta as well as the direction reversal of eigenstate trajectories associated with such Dirac cones. Both of them are unique signatures of non-Abelian gauge fields in our lattice system. Our results highlight the implications of non-Abelian gauge field in the study of topological physics and suggest opportunities for the control of photon spins and pseudospins.

Abstract:The physics of a photonic structure is commonly described in terms of its apparent geometric dimensionality. On the other hand, with the concept of synthetic dimension, it is in fact possible to explore physics in a space with a dimensionality that is higher as compared to the apparent geometrical dimensionality of the structures. In this review, we discuss the basic concepts of synthetic dimension in photonics, and highlighting the various approaches towards demonstrating such synthetic dimension for fundamental physics and potential applications.

Abstract:The concept of synthetic dimensions has generated interest in many branches of science, ranging from ultracold atomic physics to photonics, as it provides a versatile platform for realizing effective gauge potentials and topological physics. Previous experiments have augmented the real-space dimensionality by one additional physical synthetic dimension. In this study, we endow a single ring resonator with two independent physical synthetic dimensions. Our system consists of a temporally modulated ring resonator with spatial coupling between the clockwise and counterclockwise modes, creating a synthetic Hall ladder along the frequency and pseudospin degrees of freedom for photons propagating in the ring. We observe a wide variety of physics, including effective spin-orbit coupling, magnetic fields, spin-momentum locking, a Meissner-to-vortex phase transition, and signatures of topological chiral one-way edge currents, completely in synthetic dimensions. Our experiments demonstrate that higher-dimensional physics can be studied in simple systems by leveraging the concept of multiple simultaneous synthetic dimensions.

Abstract:Synthetic gauge fields have recently emerged, arising in the context of quantum simulations, topological matter, and the protected transportation of excitations against defects. For example, an ultracold atom experiences a light-induced effective magnetic field when tunneling in an optical lattice, and offering a platform to simulate the quantum Hall effect and topological insulators. Similarly, the magnetic field associated with photon transport between sites has been demonstrated in a coupled resonator array. Here, we report the first experimental demonstration of a synthetic gauge field in the virtual lattices of bosonic modes in a single optomechanical resonator. By employing degenerate clockwise and counterclockwise optical modes and a mechanical mode, a controllable synthetic gauge field is realized by tuning the phase of the driving lasers. The nonreciprocal conversion between the three modes is realized for different synthetic magnetic fluxes. As a proof-of-principle demonstration, we also show the dynamics of the system under a fast-varying synthetic gauge field, and demonstrate synthetic electric field. Our demonstration not only provides a versatile and controllable platform for studying synthetic gauge fields in high dimensions but also enables an exploration of ultrafast gauge field tuning with a large dynamic range, which is restricted for a magnetic field.

Abstract:Photonic gauge potentials are crucial for manipulating charge-neutral photons like their counterpart electrons in the electromagnetic field, allowing analogous Aharonov-Bohm effect in photonics and paving the way for critical applications like photonic isolation. Normally, a gauge potential exhibits phase inversion along two opposite propagation paths. Here we experimentally demonstrate phonon-induced anomalous gauge potentials with non-inverted gauge phases in a spatial-frequency space, where quasi-phase-matched nonlinear Brillouin scatterings enable such unique direction-dependent gauge phases. Based on this scheme, we construct photonic isolators in the frequency domain permitting nonreciprocal propagation of light along the frequency axis, where coherent phase control in the photonic isolator allows switching completely the directionality through an Aharonov-Bohm interferometer. Moreover, similar coherent controlled unidirectional frequency conversions are also illustrated. These results may offer a unique platform for a compact, integrated solution to implement synthetic-dimension devices for on-chip optical signal processing.

Abstract:We study both theoretically and numerically the topological edge states in synthetic photonic lattice with finitely periodic gauge potentials. The effective gauge fields are implemented by tailoring the phase alternatively and periodically, which finally results in symmetric total reflection at two boundaries of the one-dimensional synthetic lattice. Further tuning the nearest-neighbor coupling anisotropically, topological edge states occur at the two boundaries. Our work provides a new way to study the topological physics of one-dimensional coupled waveguide arrays with synthetic photonic lattice.

Synthetic dimension band structures on a Si CMOS photonic platform

Abstract:Synthetic dimensions, which simulate spatial coordinates using non-spatial degrees of freedom, are drawing interest in topological science and other fields for modelling higher-dimensional phenomena on simple structures. We present the first realization of a synthetic frequency dimension on a silicon ring resonator photonic device fabricated using a CMOS process. We confirm that its coupled modes correspond to a 1D tight-binding model through acquisition of up to 280 GHz bandwidth optical frequency comb-like spectra, and by measuring the first synthetic band structures on an integrated device. Furthermore, we realized two types of gauge potentials along the frequency dimension, and probed their effects through the associated band structures. An electric field analogue was produced via modulation detuning, whereas effective magnetic fields were induced using synchronized nearest- and second-nearest-neighbor coupling. Creation of coupled mode lattices and two effective forces on a monolithic Si CMOS device represents a key step towards wider adoption of topological principles.

Strain-tunable synthetic gauge fields in topological photonic graphene

Abstract:We propose a straightforward and effective approach to design, by strain-engineering, photonic topological insulators supporting high quality factors edge states. Chiral strain-engineering creates opposite synthetic gauge fields in two domains resulting in Landau levels with the same energy spacing but different topological numbers. The boundary of the two topological domains hosts robust time-reversal and spin-momentum-locked edge states, exhibiting high quality factors due to continuous strain modulation. By shaping the synthetic gauge field, we obtain a remarkable field confinement and tunability, with the strain strongly affecting the degree of localization of the edge states. Notably the two-domain design stabilizes the strain-induced topological edge state. The large potential bandwidth of the strain-engineering and the opportunity to induce the mechanical stress at the fabrication stage enables large scalability for many potential applications in photonics, such as tunable microcavities, new lasers and information processing devices, including the quantum regime.

Multi-dimensional band structure spectroscopy in the synthetic frequency dimension

Abstract:The concept of synthetic dimensions in photonics provides a versatile platform in exploring multi-dimensional physics. Many of these physics are characterized by band structures in more than one dimensions. Existing efforts on band structure measurements in the photonic synthetic frequency dimension however are limited to either one-dimensional Brillouin zones or one-dimensional subsets of multi-dimensional Brillouin zones. Here we theoretically propose and experimentally demonstrate a method to fully measure multi-dimensional band structures in the synthetic frequency dimension. We use a single photonic resonator under dynamical modulation to create a multi-dimensional synthetic frequency lattice. We show that the band structure of such a lattice over the entire multi-dimensional Brillouin zone can be measured by introducing a gauge potential into the lattice Hamiltonian. Using this method, we perform experimental measurements of two-dimensional band structures of a Hermitian and a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian. The measurements reveal some of the general properties of point-gap topology of the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian in more than one dimensions. Our results demonstrate experimental capabilities to fully characterize high-dimensional physical phenomena in the photonic synthetic frequency dimension.

Abstract:Synthetic gauge fields have provided physicists with a unique tool to explore a wide range of fundamentally important phenomena. However, most experiments have been focusing on synthetic vector gauge fields. The very rich physics brought by coupling tensor gauge fields to fracton phase of matter remain unexplored in laboratories. Here, we propose schemes to realize synthetic tensor gauge fields that address dipoles instead of single-particles. A lattice tilted by a strong linear potential and a weak quadratic potential yields a rank-2 electric field for a lineon formed by a particle-hole pair. Such a rank-2 electric field leads to a new type of Bloch oscillations, which modulate the quadrupole moment and preserve the dipole moment of the system. In higher dimensions, the interplay between interactions and vector gauge potentials imprints a phase to the ring-exchange interaction and thus generates synthetic tensor gauge fields for planons. Such tensor gauge fields make it possible to realize a dipolar Harper-Hofstadter model in laboratories. The resultant dipolar Chern insulators feature chiral edge currents of dipoles in the absence of net charge currents.

Abstract:Gauge fields play a major role in understanding quantum effects. For example, gauge flux insertion into single unit cells is crucial towards detecting quantum phases and controlling quantum dynamics and classical waves. However, the potential of gauge fields in topological materials studies has not been fully exploited. Here, we experimentally demonstrate artificial gauge flux insertion into a single plaquette of a sonic crystal with a gauge phase ranging from 0 to 2π. We insert the gauge flux through a three-step process of dimensional extension, engineering a screw dislocation and dimensional reduction. Additionally, the single-plaquette gauge flux leads to cyclic spectral flows across multiple bandgaps that manifest as topological boundary states on the plaquette and emerge only when the flux-carrying plaquette encloses the Wannier centres. We termed this phenomenon as the topological Wannier cycle. This work paves the way towards sub-unit-cell gauge flux, enabling future studies on synthetic gauge fields and topological materials.
