Abstract:The nonlinear optical effects originating from the light-matter interaction under intense light excitations have enabled numerous novel applications, such as frequency conversion, all-optical modulation, and ultrafast optical switching. Recent years, the development of metamaterials, photonic crystals, and topological optics allow unconventional enhanced nonlinear effects that may potentially exceed traditional nonlinear materials. In this chapter, we discuss the concepts of nonlinear optical effects and introduce several nonlinear optical applications, including broadband terahertz source based on plasmonic metasurfaces, nonlinear Fano resonances, and nonlinear interaction of topological graphene plasmons.

Abstract:Although a relatively new area of nanoscience, nonlinear plasmonics has become a fertile ground for the development and testing of new ideas pertaining to light–matter interaction under intense field conditions, ideas that have found a multitude of applications in surface science, active photonic nanodevices, near-field optical microscopy, and nonlinear integrated photonics. In this review, we survey the latest developments in nonlinear plasmonics in three-dimensional (metallic) and two-dimensional (graphene) nanostructures and offer an outlook on future developments in this field of research. In particular, we discuss the main theoretical concepts, experimental methods, and computational tools that are used together in modern nonlinear plasmonics to explore in an integrated manner nonlinear optical properties of metallic and graphene based nanostructures.
Engineering Waveguide Nonlinear Effective Length via Low Index Thin Films

Abstract:Novel photonic nanowires were fabricated using low-index materials and tested in the near-infrared spectrum to assess their nonlinear optical properties. In this work, we argue the need to redefine the standard nonlinear figure of merit in terms of nonlinear phase shift and optical transmission for a given propagation distance. According to this new metric, our devices largely outperform all established platforms for devices with a linear footprint in the range of 50 to 500 um, which is demonstrated to be an outstanding technological gap. For 85 fs pulses, with carrier wavelength at 1480nm and sub-uW power levels, a spectral broadening exceeding 80% of the initial bandwidth was recorded over a propagation length of just 50 um. Leveraging on CMOS-compatible processes and well-established materials such as silicon, silica, and indium tin oxide, our devices bring great promise for developing alternative all-optical devices with unparalleled nonlinear performances within the aforementioned range.

Abstract:Van der Waals (vdW) semiconductors have emerged as promising platforms for efficient nonlinear optical conversion, including harmonic and entangled photon generation. Although major efforts are devoted to integrating vdW materials in nanoscale waveguides for miniaturization, the realization of efficient, phase-matched conversion in these platforms remains challenging. To address this challenge, we develop a far-field ultrafast imaging method to track the propagation of both fundamental and harmonic waves within vdW waveguides with extreme spatiotemporal resolution. Our approach allows systematic optimization of nonlinear conversion by determining the phase-matching angles, mode profiles, and losses in waveguides without a priori knowledge of material properties. We focus on light propagation in slab waveguides of rhombohedral-stacked MoS2, an emerging vdW semiconductor with giant nonlinear susceptibility. Our results reveal that these waveguides support birefringent phase-matching, demonstrating the material's potential for efficient on-chip nonlinear optics. This work establishes spatiotemporal imaging of light propagation in waveguides as an incisive and general method to identify new materials and architectures for efficient nonlinear nanophotonics.

Abstract:Using a 4-mm-long compact silicon-nanowire waveguide, we demonstrated nonlinear-optic effects such as the spectral broadening of optical short pulses due to self-phase modulation and nonlinear transmittance due to two-photon absorption. At a 12W input power level, we observed a 1.5-pi nonlinear phase shift and a strong saturation of optical output power in a sample. We also estimated the third-order nonlinear coefficient 112 and the two-photon absorption coefficient beta, and compared them with those previously reported.

Abstract:Research on breaking time-reversal symmetry to realize one-way wave propagation is a growing area in photonic and phononic crystals and metamaterials. In this Letter, we present physical realization of an acoustic waveguide with spatiotemporally modulated boundary conditions to realize nonreciprocal transport and acoustic topological pumping. The modulated waveguide inspired by a water wheel consists of a helical tube rotating around a slotted tube at a controllable speed. The rotation of the helical tube creates moving boundary conditions for the exposed waveguide sections at a constant speed. We experimentally demonstrate acoustic nonreciprocity and topologically robust bulk-edge correspondences for this system, which is in good agreement with analytical and numerical predictions. The nonreciprocal waveguide is a one-dimensional analog to the two-dimensional quantum Hall effect for acoustic circulators and is characterized by a robust integer-valued Chern number. These findings provide insight into practical implications of topological modes in acoustics and the implementation of higher-dimensional topological acoustics where time serves as a synthetic dimension.

Abstract:Rapidly growing demands for fast information processing have launched a race for creating compact and highly efficient optical devices that can reliably transmit signals without losses. Recently discovered topological phases of light provide a novel ground for photonic devices robust against scattering losses and disorder. Combining these topological photonic structures with nonlinear effects will unlock advanced functionalities such as nonreciprocity and active tunability. Here we introduce the emerging field of nonlinear topological photonics and highlight recent developments in bridging the physics of topological phases with nonlinear optics. This includes a design of novel photonic platforms which combine topological phases of light with appreciable nonlinear response, self-interaction effects leading to edge solitons in topological photonic lattices, nonlinear topological circuits, active photonic structures exhibiting lasing from topologically-protected modes, and harmonic generation from edge states in topological arrays and metasurfaces. We also chart future research directions discussing device applications such as mode stabilization in lasers, parametric amplifiers protected against feedback, and ultrafast optical switches employing topological waveguides.

Nonlinear Quantum Optics at a Topological Interface Enabled by Defect Engineering

Abstract:The integration of topology into photonics has generated a new design framework for constructing robust and unidirectional waveguides, which are not feasible with traditional photonic devices. Here, we overcome current barriers to the successful integration of quantum emitters such as quantum dots (QDs) into valley-Hall (VH) topological waveguides, utilising photonic defects at the topological interface to stabilise the local charge environment and inverse design for efficient topological-conventional mode conversion. By incorporating QDs within defects of VH-photonic crystals, we demonstrate the first instances of single-photon resonant fluorescence and resonant transmission spectroscopy of a quantum emitter at a topological waveguide interface. Our results bring together topological photonics with optical nonlinear effects at the single-photon level, offering a new avenue to investigate the interaction between topology and quantum nonlinear systems.

Abstract:Unlike solid-state physics, the common test bed for new ideas in topological physics, topological photonics provides an ideal platform to study nonlinear wave interactions. Here, the authors investigate nonlinear interactions of one-way edge modes in frequency mixing processes in topological photonic crystals and demonstrate that more exotic phenomena, such as slow-light enhancement of nonlinear interactions and harmonic generation upon interaction of backward-propagating edge modes, can also be realized. Abstract:One-way transmission and negative refraction are the exotic wave properties founded in photonic crystals which attract a great attention due to their promising applications in photonic devices. How to integrate such two phenomena in one material or device is interesting and valuable. In this work, we theoretically and experimentally demonstrate that one-way electromagnetic space wave can be realized by means of two-dimensional magnetic photonic crystals. Simultaneously breaking the time-reversal and parity symmetries of the magnetic photonic crystals designed, we observe oblique incident space wave propagating one-way in the magnetic photonic crystals with positive or negative refraction occurring at interfaces, which can be manipulated upon the incident angle and operating frequency. Our work may offer a potential platform to realize some exotic photoelectronic and microwave devices such as one-way imaging and one-way cloaking.

Abstract:Nonlinear phenomena represent one of the central topics in the study of wave-matter interactions and constitute the key blocks for various applications in optical communication, computing, sensing, and imaging. In this work, we show that by employing the interactions between microwave photons and electron spins of nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers, one can realize a variety of nonlinear effects, ranging from the resonance at the sum or difference frequency of two or more waves to electromagnetically induced transparency from the interference between spin transitions. We further verify the phase coherence through two-photon Rabi-oscillation measurements. The highly sensitive, optically detected NV-center dynamics not only provides a platform for studying magnetically induced nonlinearities but also promises novel functionalities in quantum control and quantum sensing.

Abstract:We begin by deriving the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE) in the presence of nonlinear microstructures, where the refractive index undergoes periodic modulation in the transverse direction for photonic crystal containing circular shape. Our investigation delves deeply into the intricate mechanisms behind transverse and longitudinal modulation of the refractive indexes, which aligns with the design of numerous manufactured slab microstructure waveguides. Theory of solitary waves in nonlinear microstructure, here unconventional fiber has been studied and examined in detail. In this work, composite methods leading both transverse and longitudinal modulation of refractive indexes have been presented in detail. The work also presents the diverse characteristics of this NLSE for both homogeneous and nonhomogeneous medium, encompassing various orders of nonlinearity specific to the nonlinear microstructure under consideration. Additionally, we analyze the wave propagation profiles for wide signals, which are wider than the periodicity of micro-structured photonic crystal. We also conduct a perturbation analysis for narrow signals that are even narrower than the periodicity of photonic crystal in transverse direction.

Abstract:Topological materials, whether in solid state, photonic or acoustic systems, or other domains, are characterized by bulk topological invariants that remain unchanged as long as the relevant spectral gaps remain open. Through the bulk–edge correspondence principle, these invariants predict the presence of robust states that are localized at the termination of the material. A key example is a Chern insulator, which supports backscatter-free edge states that lead to sharply quantized conductance in the electronic case, and allows for robustness against fabrication imperfections in photonic devices. There has been a great deal of research into the linear properties of topological photonic structures, but it has been only recently that interest in the nonlinear domain has bloomed. Nonlinearity has been of particular interest because it is only in nonlinear and interacting systems that the true bosonic character of photons emerges, giving rise to physics with no direct correspondence in solid-state materials. In this Perspective, we discuss recent results concerning nonlinearity in topological photonics—with an emphasis on laser-written waveguide arrays as a model discrete system.

Abstract:Abstract In linear optical processes, compact and effective wavefront shaping techniques have been developed with the artificially engineered materials and devices in the past decades. Recently, wavefront shaping of light at newly generated frequencies was also demonstrated using nonlinear photonic crystals and metasurfaces. However, the nonlinear wave-shaping devices with both high nonlinear optical efficiency and high wave shaping efficiency are difficult to realize. To circumvent this constraint, we propose the idea of metasurface decorated optical crystal to take the best aspects of both traditional nonlinear crystals and photonic metasurfaces. In the proof-of-concept experiment, we show that a silicon nitride metasurface decorated quartz crystal can be used for the wavefront shaping of the second harmonic waves generated in quartz. With this crystal-metasurface hybrid platform, the nonlinear vortex beam generation and nonlinear holography were successfully demonstrated. The proposed methodology may have important applications in nonlinear structured light generation, super-resolution imaging, and optical information processing, etc.

Nonlinear chiral metasurfaces based on structured van der Waals materials

Abstract:Nonlinear chiral photonics explores nonlinear response of chiral structures, and it offers a pathway to novel optical functionalities not accessible through linear or achiral systems. Here we present the first application of nanostructured van der Waals materials to nonlinear chiral photonics. We demonstrate the three orders of magnitude enhancement of the third-harmonic generation from hBN metasurfaces driven by quasi-bound states in the continuum and accompanied by strong nonlinear circular dichroism at the resonances. This novel platform for chiral metaphotonics can be employed for achieving large circular dichroism combined with high-efficiency harmonic generation in a broad frequency range.

Abstract:Manipulating topological invariants is possible by modifying the global properties of optical devices to alter their band structures. This could be achieved by statically altering devices or dynamically reconfiguring devices with considerably different geometric parameters, even though it inhibits switching speed. Recently, optical nonlinearity has emerged as a tool for tailoring topological and non-Hermitian (NH) properties, promising fast manipulation of topological phases. In this work, we observe topologically protected NH phase transitions driven by optical nonlinearity in a silicon nanophotonic Floquet topological insulator. The phase transition occurs from forbidden bandgaps to NH conducting edge modes, which emerge at a nonlinearity-induced gain–loss junction along the boundaries of a topological insulator. We find static NH edge modes and dynamic phase transitions involving exceptional points at a speed of hundreds of picoseconds, which inherently retain topological protections against fabrication imperfections. This work shows an interplay between topology and non-Hermiticity by means of nonlinear optics, and it provides a way of manipulating multiple phase transitions at high speeds that is applicable to many other materials with strong nonlinearities, which could promote the development of unconventionally robust light-controlled devices for classical and quantum applications.

Abstract:Chirality in integrated quantum photonics has emerged as a promising route towards achieving scalable quantum technologies with quantum nonlinearity effects. Topological photonic waveguides, which utilize helical optical modes, have been proposed as a novel approach to harnessing chiral light-matter interactions on-chip. However, uncertainties remain regarding the nature and strength of the chiral coupling to embedded quantum emitters, hindering the scalability of these systems. In this work, we present a comprehensive investigation of chiral coupling in topological photonic waveguides using a combination of experimental, theoretical, and numerical analyses. We quantitatively characterize the position-dependence nature of the light-matter coupling on several topological photonic waveguides and benchmark their chiral coupling performance against conventional line defect waveguides for chiral quantum optical applications. Our results provide crucial insights into the degree and characteristics of chiral light-matter interactions in topological photonic quantum circuits and pave the way towards the implementation of quantitatively-predicted quantum nonlinear effects on-chip.
