Abstract:Abstract Two types of composite armor were designed (Composite armor I alumina ceramic/Kevlar/616 armored steel; Composite armor II alumina ceramic/616 armored steel/Kevlar). Through penetration tests and numerical simulations, the anti-penetration performance and anti-penetration mechanism of the composite armors were studied, and the influences of material arrangement on its anti-penetration performance were discussed. The results show that the established finite element models can reliably simulate the penetration process of composite armors. The failure modes of Kevlar and 616 armored steel in composite armor I are tensile failure and spalling damage, respectively. The failure mode of Kevlar and 616 armored steel in composite armor II is shear failure. The shear failure of 616 armored steel and Kevlar is a low energy consumption damage mode. Therefore, the structure form of composite armor I can give full play to the anti-penetration performance of the material, and the anti-penetration performance is better than that of composite armor I.

Abstract:A novel Kevlar/STG (Kevlar fabrics immersed with shear thickening gel) fabrics composite with high anti-impact performance was fabricated. By utilizing a unique multi-sensor force testing system, both low- and high-velocity impact experiments were conducted to investigate the anti-impact performance of Kevlar/STG fabrics. In low-velocity testing, the attenuation of the impact center force for Kevlar/STG was 64.1%, which was much larger than the Kevlar (27.0%). Under high-velocity loading, the impact force of Kevlar/STG attenuated from 805 N to 223 N with the increase of layers from 5-layers to 20-layers, while they reduced from 1125 N to 460 N for Kevlar fabrics. Meanwhile, the failure mode was analyzed and it was found that the high anti-impact performance was originated from the shear thickening effect and enhanced friction. In consideration of the good flexibility and excellent safe guarding property, the Kevlar/STG showed promising perspective in body armor.

Abstract:Stab-resistant body armor can effectively prevent sharp instruments from attacking the protected parts and reduce the threat to human bodies. Shear thickening fluid (STF) is a kind of smart material with variable viscosity and its viscosity can change significantly with external stimuli. The soft and adaptive characteristics of STF provide a new idea for improving the performance of stab-proof materials. In this work, three kinds of soft anti-stabbing materials were designed and prepared with aramid, poly–p–phenylene benzodioxazole (PBO), and carbon fiber fabrics impregnated with STF. Quasi-static puncture tests and dynamic impact tests were conducted to compare the performance of different anti-stabbing structures. The results showed that the peak piercing force of the STF-treated fabrics in the puncture testing was greatly increased than that of neat samples. Against the D2 knife, the maximum impact load of STF/PBO fiber fabric was increased from 55.8 N to 72.9 N, increasing by 30.6%. Against the D3 spike, the maximum impact load of STF/aramid fabric was increased from 128.9 N to 254.7 N, increasing by 197.6%. The mechanical properties of fibers were important factors for the resistance to knives, and the fabric structure was the key point to bear the spike. Optical photographs of fabric fractures and scanning electron microscope analysis indicated that the STF effectively limited the slip of the fiber bundle when the tool penetrated the fabric, which played a positive role in maintaining the tightness and integrity of the fabric structure.

Abstract:To investigate the anti-impact mechanism, the mechanical property and energy absorption of the SIT impregnated Kevlar (STF/Kevlar) fabric at high strain rate were conducted using a split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) system. The volume fraction of STF, number of fabric specimens, and impact velocity highly affected the dynamic mechanical performance of the STF/Kevlar composite. The energy transfer rate decreased from 0.85 to 0.01 once the number of fabric specimens increased from 2 layers to 8 layers. The strain rate stiffening mechanism of the STF/Kevlar was analyzed. The Kevlar fabrics underwent four sections during the impact process. The STF was mainly worked in the slip and deformation section by enhancing the friction between fabric yarns and preventing the fabric yarns from slipping. Overall, this work demonstrated that the multilayer Kevlar fabrics impregnated with high volume fraction of STF were the optimal choice for soft body armor. (C) 2017 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

Abstract:In this work, shear-stiffening gel (STG) was introduced into shear thickening fluid (STF)-impregnated-Kevlar® woven fabric (Kevlar/STF) to improve the impact resistance. The STF filled within the yarns of Kevlar and the STG covered the Kevlar/STF to form Kevlar/STF/STG composite. The STG in the Kevlar/STF/STG not only protected STF but also improved the impact resistance of the fabric because of its excellent shear-stiffening characteristics. A series of experiments including the yarn pull-out test, the split Hopkinson pressure bar impact test, rod penetration test, and knife cutting test were carried out to verify the enhancement effect. The improvement mechanism of the impact resistance for the Kevlar/STF/STG was studied. Under the similar anti-impact performance, the Kevlar/STF/STG possessed lower weight than the Kevlar and its strong impact resistance originated from the synergetic effect among the STF, STG and Kevlar. Therefore, the Kevlar/STF/STG exhibited broad potential in the soft body armor.

Abstract:This work reported a novel conductive shear thickening gel-Kevlar fabrics (c-STG/Kevlar) body armor material which possessed both anti-impact performance and dynamic mechano-sensing behavior. Due to the excellent shear thickening effect, the c-STG/Kevlar showed a higher safeguarding property than the neat Kevlar. Under low-velocity drop tower loading, the maximum center force of c-STG/Kevlar was only 5768 N, which was nearly half of the neat Kevlar (11414 N). During the high-velocity ballistic testing, the monolayer c-STG/Kevlar sample could absorb 21.6% impact energy. The c-STG/Kevlar displayed a mechano-electric coupling character since the electrical resistance of the c-STG/Kevlar was linearly dependent on the external impacts. A possible sensing mechanism was proposed and it was found that the impact damages could be evaluated by the resistance variation. Finally, an in situ impact-sensing helmet was obtained by using c-STG/Kevlar, which indicated that the above smart fabrics had wide potential in next generation body armor materials and wearable devices.

Abstract:Abstract Shear thickening fluid (STF)-impregnated Kevlar fabric can be used as “Liquid armor” for the protection of weapons and equipment. The concentration of dispersed phase in STF and the fabric structure are important factors that affect the mechanical properties of composites. To obtain the mechanical properties of Kevlar fabric impregnated with STF, nano-sized silicon dioxide particles (SiO 2 ) and Polyethylene glycol were used as dispersing phase and dispersing medium, respectively, by impregnating Kevlar fabrics with 2D planar and three-dimensional (3D) angular interlock structure, fiber-reinforced composite fabrics impregnated with STF with different physical structures were obtained. The results show that the shear thickening behavior of STF is the most obvious when the concentration of STF is 60%. In addition, fabric structure and STF concentration play an active role in the mechanical properties of STF/Kevlar fiber reinforced composites. Compared with pure Kevlar fabric, the maximum tensile load and the maximum puncture load of the three-dimensional angular interlocking structure of STF/Kevlar fiber reinforced composites are increased by more than 13,000 N and 120 N, respectively. The research results can provide theoretical support for the mechanical properties of STF/Kevlar fiber-reinforced composites and individual protection research.

STUDY ON STAB RESISTANCE OF SHEAR THICKENING FLUIDS/HIGH PERFORMANCE FIBER COMPOSITES

Abstract:Shear thickening fluids(STF) has been successfully prepared.And in terms of both macro and micro analysis by pulling experiments and infrared testing,"hydrocluster" mechanism can well explain this behavior.Kevlar,Ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene(UHMWPE),and S-Glass fiber were treated with STF to obtain the high-stab resistance composites for protective materials.The treated composites were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy and quasi-static stab-resistant test.The results showed that in the same fabric areal density,the use of shear thickening fluids can effectively enhance the stab performance of these high-performance fiber composites.The stab resistance of STF/Kevlar,STF/UHMWPE and STF/S-Glass composites had been increased by 16.13%,13.37% and 16.47%,respectively.

Abstract:Multifunctional smart soft armor materials always among the relentless pursuits of scientists to meet the demand of extreme environments. In this study, a novel dynamic stab resistance material owned ultraviolet (UV) resistance property constructed with Kevlar fabrics impregnated with a multi-phase shear thickening fluid (STF) composed of SiO2 and TiO2 nanoparticles as disperse phase was fabricated. The rheology test showed that the shear thickening effect displayed stronger with the concentration of TiO2 in STF (TSTF) increasing. Moreover, compared with STF, the addition of 16 % TiO2 in STF induced a prominent enhancement in peak viscosity from 550.81 to 3143.29 Pa s. Based on the favorable shear thickening performance of TSTF, the dynamic stab resistance property of the optimal TSTF/Kevlar (TSK) was increased 1.43 folds than that of neat Kevlar (NK). Furthermore, after 168 h UV irradiation, the peak stab force and dissipation energy of the optimal one were 698.43 N and 16.92 J retained 85.95 % and 86.24 %, which was 2.96 and 3.22 folds than that of UV-NK. This multi-functional composite material with the performance of resisting both stab impact and UV in extreme environments had broad application prospects in the field of lightweight protection.

Abstract:Besides resistance to stab and impact, good flexibility and lightweight, soft body armors are also desired to have capabilities of monitoring human physical state, maintaining body temperature, and being nonflammable. In this work, a three-coaxial-layer fabric composite with Kevlar fabric as a core protection layer, reduced graphene oxide (RGO) and nano-SiO2/shear-thickening gel (STG) as functional layers is developed with the above-mentioned features for multifunctional soft body armors. The as-prepared SiO2/STG/RGO@Kevlar (SSG@Kevlar) fabric composite has excellent electro-heating performance under a low work voltage of 5 V, an extraordinary strain sensing ability (gauge factor over 41, outstanding linearity (R2 > 0.99), a fast response (69 ms), high strain resolution (0.05%)) and an effective impact energy sensing ability. Benefited from the introduction of SiO2/STG layer, the SSG@Kevlar fabric composite also exhibits an obviously enhanced anti-impact performance (a peak force reduction of 40%) and a significantly improved knife-stab resistance (a penetration depth reduction of 12 mm), due to the shear thickening effect of STG and the yarn interaction force enhancement caused by SiO2 nanoparticles. Furthermore, the SSG@Kevlar fabric composite offers remarkable fire-resistance, no open flame and glowing observed under continuous ignition due to the dense char formed. Consequently, the SSG@Kevlar fabric composite developed is promising for multifunctional soft body armors for protecting wearers in various aspects.

Abstract:In order to deeply explore the fiber characteristics influencing on stab resistance of shear thickening fluid (STF)- impregnated fabrics, two different weaving fabrics, ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fabric and Kevlar fabrics are saturate the various concentrations and particle size of STFs. Result shows that, SiO2/PEG-200 blends demonstrate quick shear-thickening property, and the critical shear rate lowers to 1.2-45 s-1 with higher concentration of 75 nm SiO2. STF concentration and particle size significantly affect spike puncture resistance property, but the knife stab resistance mainly depends on fiber characteristics. Comparatively, STF-UHMWPE composite fabrics exhibit better knife stab resistance but weaker spike puncture resistance than STF-Kevlar fabrics. This study can provide an optimization for structure design of stab resistance armors in the future.

Abstract:The shear thickening fluid (STF) impregnated Kevlar fabric coating glass fiber reinforced plastic (GFRP) composite structure has both wearing comfort and high protective ability, which will provide guidance for the development of new protective products. In this study, STF with SiO 2 mass fraction of 34% was prepared, the quasi-static/dynamic mechanical behavior of STF, Kevlar and STF impregnated Kevlar fabric coating GFRP were carried out by the high-speed impact experiments, respectively. At the same time, the damage characteristics and energy absorption properties of the composite structure are analyzed by integrating experimental data with numerical simulation. The results showed that the composite structure makes the energy absorption capacity of GFRP improved. STF impregnated 4 layers of Kevlar fabric coating GFRP composite structure was impacted by the projectile at a speed of 244 m/s, and the composite structure consumes 1.54 times the energy of single GFRP laminates. The resistance of composite structures can be improved by placing more layers of Kevlar fabric behind GFRP laminates. The evaluation of the target's bullet resistance cannot solely rely on the energy consumed by the projectile. A portion of the energy is transferred to the obstacle that impedes the target's motion.

Abstract:Illustration of the procedures and samples for preparing CNT/STF/Kevlar composite: (A) procedures and (B) samples. Shear thickening fluid (STF), carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are both promising in body protection and anti‐impact for the drastic viscosity change of STF and the extremely high tensile strength and elongation of CNTs. The excellent performance of the above two combined with traditional Kevlar fabrics can significantly improve the mechanical properties and reduce the number of layers used for body protection. This work reports a new method to prepare STF/CNTs/Kevlar with excellent tensile properties and anti‐impact performance by spraying method with 1 wt% polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) solution as a binder for better integration between CNTs and Kevlar. Surface morphology changes in the preparation process indicate the combined structure of PVA binder, CNTs, and STF, presenting a uniform macroscopic and nonuniform microscopic surface of STF/CNTs/Kevlar composite. The tensile strength and anti‐impact properties including punch residual velocity and energy absorbed were studied and results for STF/CNTs/Kevlar composite are 669.8 ± 18.1 MPa, 1.602 ± 0.045 m/s, and 21.683 ± 1.182 J in 12 ms, increased by 46.4%, 23.0%, and 240.2%, respectively, compared with neat Kevlar, owing to the improved tight bonding and friction between fabrics yarns caused by PVA adhesive and tangled CNTs, accompanied with the enhanced viscosity of STF under forces. Highlights Composites were made by spraying PVA, CNTs, and STF onto Kevlar fabrics; The tensile strength of the composite was 46.4% higher than Kevlar; The energy absorbed in 12 ms in anti‐impact tests was improved by 240.2%; Tight bonding and friction between yarns are reasons to improve properties; The raised viscosity of STF under forces is useful for mechanical properties.

Abstract:In this article the deformation and energy absorption modes of shear thickening fluid (STF) treated and untreated Kevlar woven fabrics upon impact has been presented. It was found that in untreated Kevlar fabrics, only the primary yarns, which are engaged by the impactor, participate in load sharing and hence energy absorption. Since the load per yarn is high, the yarns slip at the grip, forming long loops but the rest of the fabric remains undisturbed. Due to participation of only a few yarns, the energy absorption is low. However, in case of STF treated fabrics, the STF is transformed into a solid like material during impact. The transformed STF acts as a bridging matrix which converts the network of yarns in the fabric into a single structure. Hence, unlike in untreated fabrics, the entire fabric rather than only primary yarns participates in load bearing and energy absorption. The failure of the STF treated structure is by rupture of fibers and yarns rather than their slippage.

Abstract:Ballistic properties of bulletproof plate prepared by impregnating aramid fabric with shear thickening fluid were enhanced. This study proposes a process for the preparation of composite laminates using the shear thickening fluid (STF) impregnated aramid fabric and presents some fabric panel configuration strategies. Firstly, this study prepared two kinds of STF using 20 nm and 500 nm silica particles. Then, the STF‐impregnated Kevlar fabrics were laminated and hot‐pressed to form the fabric panels. After that, the ballistic performance of the fabric panels was evaluated by firing the 9 mm steel core projectile using a gas gun. The ballistic tests showed that the ballistic performance of the hybridized configuration panels using STF‐20 treated fabrics as the front panels and STF‐500 treated fabrics as the backing panels was superior, with a reduction of 36.1%–37.6% in the number of perforated layers (4.7–5 layers) compared to a single STF‐treated panel. This study provides a new idea and method for applying STF in protective equipment. Highlights Shear thickening fluid (STF) and aramid fabric are better combined by hot pressing lamination process; The ballistic properties of fabric panels are significantly improved by hybrid configuration; The ballistic performance enhancement mechanism of composite bulletproof plate was revealed.

Abstract:The influence of intralayer interfacial sliding among yarns on the enhancement of anti-impact and energy absorption was investigated in this work. Firstly, the rheological test and yarn pull-out test were conducted to analyze the relationship between the state of shear thickening fluid (STF) and the interfacial sliding among yarns. Then, the influence of impact velocity and constraint conditions on the interfacial sliding were studied by drop hammer and ballistic tests. The results showed that the impact speed and constraint conditions would affect the relative interfacial sliding rate among yarns, which would affected the rheological state of STF and the antiimpact performance of fabric. Besides, the mathematical model of the relationship between projectile velocity and fabric kinetic energy under the strong constraints was given by combining with the results of finite element analysis (FEA) of ballistic impact. This work provided a design idea for the body armor with high protective performance.

Abstract:The challenges of today’s protective material developers' requirements for body armour target structure design, strength, stiffness, and light weight structures have historically come from composite structures having high cost, complex manufacturing, and time-consuming process. Hence, there is a need to identify suitable alternate materials with reliable composites and essential design requirements for high impact armour structures. At present, hybrid composite structures are increasingly utilized in armour structure developments because they offer quick adoption to produce low cost, high impact strength, and a methodology for easy and quick manufacturing process without compromising the performance of traditional composite structures. This experimental analysis reports that the prepared hybrid composite target structures are composed of woven polypropylene fabric impregnated with single, double, and triple layers with a prepared shear thickening fluid (STF) concentration (50 vol% silica dispersed in polyethylene glycol 600 g/mol) used as a core layer in this structure and a neat/silica gel coated aluminum face sheet is used as the skin material. The prepared STF is characterized through rheological analysis exhibits shear thickening behavior reveals that extensively depends on silica particle morphology, volume fraction, and particle size distribution. The prepared hybrid composite target structure test results demonstrate a significant enhancement in tensile strength, modulus, better peel resistance properties, and puncture resistance evaluated in different geometry of projectiles like flat, hemispherical, elliptical, and conical indentor penetration velocity at 500 mm/min have been performed to demonstrate the improvements in the target structure. It enhances the performance layer thickness increases with increasing puncture resistance for all indentors sequently identified and penetration damage of target structures varied with respect to indentor nose head surface area of contacts.

Abstract:Basalt and Kevlar materials are high-performance reinforcements used in armor systems. The present work presented that the combination of natural fiber (basalt) with synthetic fiber (Kevlar) and alumina tile composites improves ballistic performance. The partial replacement of basalt encourages the use of natural reinforcement for the development of eco-friendly armor. Continuum damage mechanics (CDM) based modeling is used with a high strain rate and implemented based on Yen's criteria. Cohesive elements are used at inter-layers for modeling the damage evolution. The damage initiation and propagation model is created and implemented as a user-defined subroutine in the ABAQUS finite element (FE) code (VUMAT). Parametric studies are performed by varying the stacking sequence of Kevlar 3D (K3D) and basalt 3D (B3D) layers and the best stacking is used with ceramic (alumina) material. The optimum stacking sequence of composite laminate thickness is investigated to design the light weight body armour and the better results are used to reduce the thickness of the panel, which is the key factor to design any armor panel. Results revealed the panels with basalt composite (B16) impacting with FSP impactor and alumina/Kevlar/basalt composite (C1K7B8) impacting with 9 mm FMJ impactor improved the ballistic performance as compared to H16, K8H8 and K8B8 stacking sequences.

Abstract:Liquid armor prepared with shear thickening fluid (STF) and high-performance fiber fabric is a novel body protection material which possesses both anti-impact performance and improved wearing comfort. In this work, the rheological behaviors of STFs with different features and mechanical properties of STF impregnated fabrics at different temperatures were characterized. Three kinds of STFs were prepared by mixing silica particles and polyethylene glycol with different particle concentrations and/or particle-fluid interaction. Their rheological behaviors show remarkable differences in viscosity, loss modulus and storage modulus. High solid concentrations and strong particle-fluid interaction are considered to be important factors to obtain high viscosity and high modulus. The rheological properties of STFs are also very sensitive to temperature, as we have found that the viscosity and the modulus values at −40 °C are three orders of magnitude higher than those at 55 °C. However, the mechanical properties of the aramid fabrics impregnated with these STFs do not change significantly with the STF types and temperature. Yarn pull-out and dynamic impact tests results show that fabrics impregnated with STFs possess excellent energy absorption effects, but the friction resistance and energy absorption capacity of the fabrics are not positively related to the STF viscosity and modulus. Our findings will provide guidance to the design of STF composites in the field of low-speed impact.
