Abstract:Small molecule organic solar cells based on copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) and bulkfullerene (C60) are fabricated with a PEDOT:PSS/LiF double anode buffer layer system that utilizes benefits of both a single LiF anode buffer layer and a single PEDOT:PSS buffer layer. Moreover, the performances of the cells are further improved. Meanwhile, this anode buffer layer system overcomes the stability shortages of the cells with a single anode buffer layer. The mechanisms of this anode buffer layer system are discussed. An MIS model is used here to explain enhancement of both photovoltaic characteristics and the stability.

Abstract:We report that a very thin n-type Sb2O3 anode buffer layer in copper phthalocyanine (CuPc)/fullerene (C-60) organic solar cells (OSCs) increases the power conversion efficiency by a factor of similar to 34%. The enhancement is mostly attributed to the preferred orientation of CuPc layer and the increased contact area of CuPc/C-60 interface, induced by the Sb2O3 layer rather than commonly regarded energy level alignment achieved by other metal oxides such as MoO3. Our study provides an insight to understand effect of the metal oxide buffer layers on the morphological influence in organic solar cells. (C) 2011 American Institute of Physics. Abstract:A stable small-molecule organic photovoltaic device with structure of ITO⧹donor⧹acceptor⧹buffer⧹cathode is presented. A thin layer (∼60Å) of tris-8-hydroxy-quinolinato aluminum (Alq3) instead of bathocuproine (BCP) is adopted as the buffer of the device, resulting in 150 times longer lifetime. The power conversion efficiency of the device is 2.11% under 75mW/cm2 AM1.5G simulated illumination, and no perceptible efficiency degradation is observed for long-term storage of the device in vacuum or nitrogen-filled glove box. More effective blocking of Alq3 than BCP against diffusion of cathode atoms and permeation of oxygen and/or water molecules is considered as the main reason for the improved performance of the new device.
Investigation on the small molecular organic solar cells with PEDOT:PSS/ZnPc double anode buffer layer system

Abstract:In this paper, the performances of small molecular organic solar cells based on CuPc/C 60 were studied, including the CuPc/C 60 cells without any anode buffer layers and the cells with Zinc-phthalocyanine (ZnPc), PEDOT:PSS, PEDOT:PSS/ZnPc system as an anode buffer layer, respectively. The mechanisms of these three kinds of anode buffer layers were discussed. The results showed that ZnPc layer increases the open-circuit voltage, from 0.372 V to 0.479 V. PEDOT:PSS layer increases the short-circuit current density, from 1.943 mA/cm 2 to 3.752 mA/cm 2. The PEDOT:PSS/ZnPc system enhances both of them. The open-circuit voltage increases from 0.372 V to 0.482 V, and the short-circuit current density increases from 1.943 mA/cm 2 to 3.810 mA/cm 2 and the power conversion effciency increases more than 2 times. It is found that the main reasons are ZnPc can make holes transport easily and PEDOT:PSS can smooth the surface of ITO.

Abstract:Organic solar cells (OSCs) are widely studied for their advantages such as simple production, low cost, good flexibility, and large‐area printing. The buffer layer between electrodes and the photoactive layer has a significant impact on the efficiency and stability of OSCs. In order to lower the energy barrier height at the interface, provide an Ohmic contact with lower series resistance, and increase the charge collection efficiency of the corresponding electrodes for either holes or electrons, suitable electrode buffer materials can be chosen. The selection of electrode buffer layer has an important effect on the photoelectric conversion efficiency. Therefore, the study of buffer layer characteristics has certain guiding significance for the improvement of device structure and performance optimization. At present, the buffer layer materials used in OSCs are mainly organic polymer materials, organic small molecule materials, metal fluoride, metal oxides, and so on. Herein, the structure and working principle of OSCs are introduced first. Then, the properties and function of buffer layer in OSCs are summarized and discussed. Finally, the application of common buffer layer materials in OSCs is summarized, and how to improve the performance of the device is described.

Abstract:Organic photovoltaic cells (OPVs) are a promising cost-effective alternative to silicon-based solar cells, and possess light-weight, low-cost, and flexibility advantages. Significant progress has been achieved in the development of novel photovoltaic materials and device structures in the last decade. Nowadays small molecular semiconductors for OPVs have attracted considerable attention, due to their advantages over their polymer counterparts, including well-defined molecular structure, definite molecular weight, and high purity without batch to batch variations. The highest power conversion efficiencies of OPVs based on small molecular donor/fullerene acceptors or polymeric donor/fullerene acceptors are up to 6.7% and 8.3%, respectively, and meanwhile nonfullerene acceptors have also exhibited some promising results. In this review we summarize the developments in small molecular donors, acceptors (fullerene derivatives and nonfullerene molecules), and donor-acceptor dyad systems for high-performance multilayer, bulk heterojunction, and single-component OPVs. We focus on correlations of molecular chemical structures with properties, such as absorption, energy levels, charge mobilities, and photovoltaic performances. This structure-property relationship analysis may guide rational structural design and evaluation of photovoltaic materials (253 references).

Abstract:Short circuit current density (J(sc)) and open circuit voltage (V-oc) are two important parameters to evaluate the performance of organic solar cells. How to increase these two parameters without using novel material still remains a challenge. Two small molecules, zinc phthalocyanine (ZnPc) and 3,4,9,10-perylene tetracarboxylic bisbenzimidazole (PTCBI), are used to fabricate ITO/ZnPc/ZnPc:PTCBI/PTCBI/ZnPc/Al photovoltaic device. We find that J(sc) and V-oc are enhanced by using oblique deposition technique and ZnPc cathode buffer layer, respectively. Analysis of the active layer reveals phase segregation in obliquely deposited ZnPc:PTCBI bulk heterojunction layer. Field emission measurement is used to probe the band bending and internal field in ZnPc/PTCBI planar heterojunction. The effects of phase segregation and internal field are discussed. This work shows that careful assembly of donor and acceptor material is beneficial to small molecule photovoltaic device.

Abstract:By adopting C60/Al composite anode and an inverted device structure of ITO/Alq3/C60/CuPc/C60/Al, we have achieved a power conversion efficiency of 0.78% under 75mW/cm2 AM1.5G simulated illumination and a shelf lifetime of 950h from unencapsulated organic solar cells. The improved stability is attributed to efficient protection of the C60 layer in the inverted structure. Replacing the C60/Al anode with C60/Au anode in the inverted structure, produces a power conversion efficiency of 0.64%, comparable to that of the device with C60/Al anode. This indicates that the property of the composite electrode is mainly determined by the thin C60 layer. Use of C60/Al composite anode to fabricate inverted organic light-emitting devices gives rise to an efficiency of the device comparable to that of conventional devices.

Abstract:We have fabricated and studied an organic light emitting diode (OLED) with a p-type silicon anode and a SiO2 buffer layer between the anode and the organic layers which emits light from a semitransparent top Yb/Au cathode. The luminance of the OLED is up to 5600 cd/m2 at 17 V and 1800 mA/cm2, the current efficiency is 0.31 cd/A. Both its luminance and current efficiency are much higher than those of the OLEDs with silicon as the anodes reported previously. The enhancement of the luminance and efficiency can be attributed to an improved balance between the hole- and electron-injection through two efficient ways: 1) restraining the hole-injection by inserting an ultra-thin SiO2 buffer layer between the Si anode and the organic layers; and 2) enhancing the electron-injection by using a low work function, low optical reflectance and absorption semitransparent Yb/Au cathode.

Abstract:This paper presents an overview of the recent progress of small molecule organic solar cells mainly based on the previous works of our group. We will mainly focus on the interfacial processes in the cells. The dissociation of excitons at electrode/organic and organic/organic interfaces can be directly observed by transient photovoltage measurements. A simple model including dissociation of excitons at the interface and drift of free carriers in the built-in field is proposed to explain the observed signals of transient photovoltage. Besides exciton-blocking and preventing damage due to cathode evaporation, blocking permeation of oxygen and/or water molecules and modulating the built-in field are proposed as functions of the buffer layer between C-60 and Al. By the use of the inverted structure, a shelf lifetime of over 1500 h is achieved for unencapsulated small-molecule organic solar cells.

Abstract:The interface between an electrode and the organic active layer is an important factor in organic solar cells (OSCs) that influences the power conversion efficiency (PCE). In this report, a buffer layer of 2-thenylmercaptan/Au self-assembly film is introduced into OSCs as a substitute for the poly(3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT: PSS) layer. The electrode/active layer interface is meliorated by Au-S coordinate bond of self assembly after applying this buffer layer. The series resistance reduces from 20Ωcm2 in a device based on PEDOT:PSS to 10.2Ωcm2. Correspondingly, the fill factor (FF) increases from 0.50 to 0.64. Moreover, due to the dipole of this self-assembled layer, the open circuit voltage (Voc) also increases slightly from 0.54V to 0.56V and the PCE reaches 2.5%.

Abstract:The electron transport (ETL) layer improves power conversion efficiency (PCE) in organic photovoltaic cells (OPVs) through the incorporation of the cathode interfacial layers. Here, we introduce [bis-4,6-(3,5-di-4-pyridylphenyl)-2-methylpyrimidine] (B4PyMPM) as an n-type buffer layer consisting of a self-organized layer with a horizontal configuration in bulk heterojunction OPVs. It is demonstrated that self-organization of this B4PyMPM compound in which molecules adopt a horizontal orientation parallel to the organic semiconducting substrate induces a large local interfacial electric field that results in a significant enhancement of exciton dissociation. The device using B4PyMPM as an ETL layers has a significantly high open circuit voltage (Voc = 0.64 V), good short circuit current (Jsc = 8.24 mA/cm2), good fill factor (FF = 0.65) and good PCE (3.42%). The physical properties of the device have also been studied from the measurements of impedance spectroscopy and photocurrent, which directly show the mechanisms occurring inside OPVs.

Abstract:Organic-Inorganic hybrid solar cells combine the advantages of organic and inorganic semiconductors, and possess promising application prospect. Although the active layer in hybrid solar cells is the most important, the electrode buffer layers, including cathode buffer layer and anode buffer layer, have a great influence on the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of the cells. Inorganic semiconductors are often used as the electrode buffer layers because of their high chemical stability, high carrier mobility, and high transparency. TiO2 and ZnO are the most widely used inorganic electron transport layer materials while inorganic hole transport layer materials, such as CuI, CuSCN and NiO, have been applied frequently in organic-inorganic hybrid solar cells. Here, we briefly review the progress on inorganic buffer layer materials in hybrid solar cells.

Abstract:Antimony selenide (Sb2Se3) is an emerging photovoltaic material. We demonstrate that an organic small molecule of N,N′-bis(naphthalen-1-yl)-N,N′-bis(phenyl)benzidine (NPB) can induce the crystallization of the Sb2Se3 film during the annealing treatment. By introducing an NPB buffer layer, the Sb2Se3 film crystal quality is improved, and the photogenerated carrier lifetime is increased. In addition, the introduction of an NPB layer can suppress the interface recombination near the anode. The solar cell was fabricated using C60 as an electron transport layer by vacuum thermal evaporation. We took indium tin oxide/NPB (6.0 nm)/Sb2Se3 (∼50 nm)/C60 (5.0 nm)/Alq3 (3.0 nm)/Al as the device architecture, where Alq3 is tris(8-hydroxyquinolinato) aluminum. By adding an NPB buffer layer, the open-circuit voltage is elevated from 0.35 to 0.40 V, and the power conversion efficiency is dramatically enhanced from 3.21 to 5.03%. We attributed the improved performance to the suppression of the bulk and the interface recombination.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

18.9% Efficiency Binary Organic Solar Cells Enabled by Regulating the Intrinsic Properties of PEDOT:PSS

Abstract:The intrinsic properties of PEDOT: PSS are regulated by adding molybdenum‐containing semiconductors (MoO3 and MoS2). The MoO3‐PEDOT: PSS and MoS2‐PEDOT: PSS solutions exhibit lower acidity, while their thin films show improved conductivity and enhanced electron‐blocking ability. With the modified PEDOT: PSS layer, organic solar cells composed of PM6:Y6 and PM6:L8‐BO achieve champion power conversion efficiencies of 18.0% and 18.9%, respectively. Anode interlayers play critical roles in organic solar cells, impacting the electrode's work function, energy level alignment, hole extraction, and electrode surfaces. However, the development of the commonly used anode interlayer PEDOT:PSS lags behind the rapid development of organic solar cells due to its low conductivity, acidity, and poor electron‐blocking capabilities. Herein, an innovative strategy is proposed to regulate the intrinsic properties of PEDOT:PSS by incorporating molybdenum‐containing semiconductors (MoO3, MoS2), which is validated using the state‐of‐the‐art active layer consisting of PM6:Y6 in conventional devices. The addition of molybdenum‐containing semiconductors alters the aggregation morphology of the PEDOT:PSS layer, increasing its conductivity and reducing its acidity. Furthermore, the hole extraction and electron‐blocking ability are improved by changing the work function of the anode with the influence of the deep energy level and by forming a trap energy level to capture electrons. Consequently, when the interlayer is employed, a champion power conversion efficiency of 17.1% in the PM6:Y6 devices and 18.9% in organic solar cells composed of PM6:L8‐BO is achieved. The results, which enhance the intrinsic properties of PEDOT:PSS with molybdenum‐containing semiconductors, offer valuable guidelines for engineering anode interlayers to fabricate highly efficient non‐fullerene organic solar cells.

Abstract:Highly efficient organic solar cells (OSCs) are often obtained with a multilayer structure, in which active layer is sandwiched between anode and cathode interlayer. Here we present a simple strategy to simultaneously obtain anode interlayer and boost performances of OSCs by directly adding a tiny small molecule [2-(9H-carbazol-9-yl)ethyl] phosphonic acid (2PACz) into the active layer. It is found that 2PACz with high surface energy prefers to self-organize at the bottom of PM6:Y6-BO bulk heterojunction (BHJ) blend and in-situ form anode interlayer during the film formation. Encouragingly, green solvent o-xylene processed OSCs with substantial improvement of photovoltaic performances are observed in self-organized 2PACz device with best power conversion efficiency (PCE) reaching 17.8%, notably higher than that of control device based on independently spin-coated 2PACz with a PCE of 16.8%. In-depth studies indicate the in-situ self-organized 2PACz underneath BHJ is beneficial to enhance build-in potential, suppress surface trap-assisted recombination, and induce ordered molecule stacking. Moreover, this self-organization method is implanted in a large-area OSC with 1 cm2 device area and an outstanding PCE of 15.8% is achieved. These results above highlight the great potential of in-situ self-organization method in simplifying device processing as well as improving efficiency, which make it an ideal strategy for large-area OSCs manufacture.

Abstract:In this study, an effective and simple approach for optimizing the performance of both cathode and anode interlayers in OSCs is demonstrated using 4-heptyl-4′-cyanobiphenyl (7CB) to dope a classic cathode (ZnO and SnO2) or an anode interlayer [poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS)]. Efficient Cathode Buffer Material Based on Dibenzothiophene- S, S-dioxide for Both Conventional and Inverted Organic Solar Cells

Abstract:A novel conjugated molecule (PBSON) based on a main chain composed of bis(dibenzothiophene-S,S-dioxide) fused cyclopentadiene and side chains containing amino groups is presented as an efficient cathode buffer material (CBM) for organic solar cells (OSCs). PBSON showed a deep highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) energy level of -6.01 eV, which was beneficial for building hole-blocking layers at the cathodes of OSCs. The energy bandgap of PBSON reached 3.17 eV, implying high transmittance to visible and near-infrared light, which meant PBSON should be suitable for the applications to most inverted OSCs. The scanning Kelvin probe microscopy measurement and theoretical calculation on the PBSON/cathode interfacial interaction proved the excellent work function-regulating abilities of PBSON for various cathodes, suggesting that PBSON could promote the formation of Ohmic contacts at the cathodes and thus improve the transport and collection of electron carriers for OSCs. The characterization of electron-only devices demonstrated the good electron-transporting performance of PBSON at the cathodes. In the conventional OSCs, it was hinted that PBSON might restrain the infiltrations of evaporated cathode atoms into the active films, consequently reducing the reverse leakage currents. As a result, PBSON was able to boost the power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) by 58.2 and 56.4% for both conventional and inverted OSCs of the typical PTB7:PC71BM system, respectively, as compared to the unadorned devices. In terms of the classical PTB7-Th:PC71BM system, substantial increases in PCEs could also be found with PBSON interlayers, which were 54.7 and 59.8% for the conventional device and inverted device, respectively. Therefore, PBSON is a kind of promising CBM for realizing both conventional and inverted OSCs of high performance.

Abstract:It is common to incorporate a cathode-side buffer layer in organic photovoltaic devices (OPVs) to mitigate damage from the evaporation of metal onto the underlying acceptor layer (e.g. C 60 ), which can lead to exciton quenching and/or a barrier to charge extraction. Additionally, these materials can act as both an optical spacer and an exciton blocking layer. One class of buffer layers consists of a wide bandgap material (e.g. bathocuproine), that transports carriers via damage-induced midgap states. A second class of buffers consists of a material such as tris(acetylacetonato) ruthenium(III) (Ru(acac) 3 ), which has a small highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) energy. In that case, electrons from the C 60 and holes from the cathode recombine at the C 60 /Ru(acac) 3 interface. In this work, we introduce a third class of buffer that, due to alignment of its lowest unoccupied molecular orbital with that of the acceptor, allows for low resistance transport of electrons between the acceptor and cathode. By utilizing 3,4,9,10 perylenetetracarboxylic bisbenzimidazole (PTCBI) as a buffer layer, we show improved fill factor in squaraine/C 60 -based devices without a loss in open-circuit voltage or photocurrent, leading to a >20% increase in power conversion efficiency. Although limited exciton transfer occurs from C 60 to PTCBI, the short exciton diffusion length of PTCBI, coupled with the lack of loss at the C 60 /PTCBI interface, suggests that PTCBI also blocks excitons from quenching at metal-induced defects that are present in the absence of a buffer layer.

Abstract:Additive-assisted layer-by-layer (LBL) deposition affords interpenetrating fibril network active layer morphology with a bulk p-i-n feature and proper vertical segregation in organic solar cells (OSCs). This approach captures the balance between material interaction and crystallization that locks the characteristic length scales at tens of nanometers to suit exciton and carrier diffusion, thereby reducing recombination losses. On the other hand, the wrinkle-pattern morphology generated due to Marangoni-Bénard instability and radial flow during spin-coating couples with the reflective back electrode, inducing diffuse reflection and thus enhancing light capture capability. The nano-to-micron hierarchical morphology in proper vertical segregation achieves a record-breaking power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 20.8% for small-area devices and 17.0% for mini-module devices. The new processing and the resulted 3D morphology better suit photon and carrier dynamics in operation, such that a notable improvement in device operational stability is recorded, which offers a plausible strategy toward practical organic photovoltaic technology.
