Abstract:A wide-bandgap conjugated polymer, PNQx-2F2T, based on a ring-fused unit of quinoxalino[6,5-f ]quinoxaline (NQx), is synthesized for use as electron donor in polymer solar cells (PSCs). The polymer shows intense light absorption in the range from 300 to 740 nm and favorable energy levels of frontier molecular orbitals. The polymer has afforded decent device performance when blended with either fullerene-based acceptor [6,6]-phenyl-C71 -butylric acid methyl ester ([70]PCBM) or non-fullerene acceptor 3,9-bis(2-methylene-(3-(1,1-dicyanomethylene)-indanone-methyl))-5,5,11,11-tetrakis(4-n-hexylphenyl)-dithieno[2,3-d: 2',3'-d']-s-indaceno[1,2-b:5,6-b']dithiophene (IT-M). The highest PCEs of 7.9% and 7.5% have been achieved for [70]PCBM or IT-M based PSCs, respectively. Moreover, the influence of molecular weight of PNQx-2F2T on solar cell performance has been investigated. It is found that fullerene-based devices prefer higher polymer molecular weight, while non-fullerene devices are not susceptible to the molecular weight of PNQx-2F2T. The device results are extensively explained by electrical and morphological characterizations. This work not only evidences the potential of NQx for constructing high-performance photovoltaic polymers but also demonstrates a useful structure-performance relationship for efficiency enhancement of non-fullerene PSCs via the development of new conjugated polymers.
Quinoxaline-Based Wide Band Gap Polymers for Efficient Nonfullerene Organic Solar Cells with Large Open-Circuit Voltages.

Abstract:We present here a series of wide-band-gap ( Eg: >1.8 eV) polymer donors by incorporating thiophene-flanked phenylene as an electron-donating unit and quinoxaline as an electron-accepting co-unit to attain large open-circuit voltages ( Vocs) and short-circuit currents ( Jscs) in nonfullerene organic solar cells (OSCs). Fluorination was utilized to fine-tailor the energetics of polymer frontier molecular orbitals (FMOs) by replacing a variable number of H atoms on the phenylene moiety with F. It was found that fluorination can effectively modulate the polymer backbone planarity through intramolecular noncovalent S···F and/or H···F interactions. Polymers (P2-P4) show an improved molecular packing with a favorable face-on orientation compared to their nonfluorinated analogue (P1), which is critical to charge carrier transport and collection. When mixed with IDIC, a nonfullerene acceptor, P3 with two F atoms, achieves a remarkable Voc of 1.00 V and a large Jsc of 15.99 mA/cm2, simultaneously, yielding a power-conversion efficiency (PCE) of 9.7%. Notably, the 1.00 V Voc is among the largest values in the IDIC-based OSCs, leading to a small energy loss ( Eloss: 0.62 eV) while maintaining a large PCE. The P3:IDIC blend shows an efficient exciton dissociation through hole transfer even under a small energy offset of 0.16 eV. Further fluorination leads to the polymer P4 with increased chain-twisting and mismatched FMO levels with IDIC, showing the lowest PCE of 2.93%. The results demonstrate that quinoxaline-based copolymers are promising donors for efficient OSCs and the fluorination needs to be fine-adjusted to optimize the interchain packing and physicochemical properties of polymers. Additionally, the structure-property correlations from this work provide useful insights for developing wide-band-gap polymers with low-lying highest occupied molecular orbitals to minimize Eloss and maximize Voc in nonfullerene OSCs for efficient power conversion.
Difluorobenzoxadiazole-based Conjugated Polymers for Efficient Non-Fullerene Polymer Solar Cells with Low Voltage Loss

Abstract:Two donor-acceptor (D-A) conjugated copolymers based on difluombenzoxadiazole (ffBX) and oligothiophenes, i.e., PffBX-2T and PffBX-TT, were designed and synthesized for polymer solar cells (PSCs). Compared to the polymers based on difluorobenzothiadiazole (ffBT) units, the two ffBX-based polymers presented identical optical bandgaps (similar to 1.62 eV), but lower highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) energy levels. Owing to the down-shifted HOMO levels, the PSCs based on PffBX-2T and PffBX-TT showed lower voltage loss, and the opencircuit voltage (V-oc was similar to 0.1 V higher than that of the devices with the ffBT-based polymer. As a result, higher photovoltaic performance was achieved for the devices based on the ffBX-based polymers. The power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of the non-fullerene PSCs with PffBX-2T and PffBX-TT as the donor were 8.72% and 10.12%, respectively. The superior device performance of PffBX-IT resulted from the efficient exciton dissociation and charge transport as well as weak charge recombination, which could be ascribed to the favorable face-on packing of the conjugated backbones and the desired morphology in the blend film. Our study demonstrates that difluombenzoxadiazole is a promising building block for constructing conjugated polymers for high-performance non-fullerene PSCs.
Synergistic Effect of Fluorination on Both Donor and Acceptor Materials for High Performance Non-Fullerene Polymer Solar Cells with 13.5% Efficiency

Abstract:A high performance polymer solar cells (PSCs) based on polymer donor PM6 containing fluorinated thienyl benzodithiophene unit and n-type organic semiconductor acceptor IT-4F containing fluorinated end-groups were developed. In addition to complementary absorption spectra (300–830 nm) with IT-4F, the PM6 also has a deep HOMO (the highest occupied molecular) level (−5.50 eV), which will lower the open-circuit voltage (Voc) sacrifice and reduce the Vloss of the IT-4F-based PSCs. Moreover, the strong crystallinity of PM6 is beneficial to form favorable blend morphology and hence to suppress recombination. As a result, in comparison with the PSCs based on a non-fluorinated D/A pair of PBDB-T:ITIC with a medium PCE of 11.2%, the PM6:IT-4Fbased PSCs yielded an impressive PCE of 13.5% due to the synergistic effect of fluorination on both donor and acceptor, which is among the highest values recorded in the literatures for PSCs to date. Furthermore, a PCE of 12.2% was remained with the active layer thickness of up to 285 nm and a high PCE of 11.4% was also obtained with a large device area of 1 cm2. In addition, the devices also showed good storage, thermal and illumination stabilities with respect to the efficiency. These results indicate that fluorination is an effective strategy to improve the photovoltaic performance of materials, as well as the both fluorinated donor and acceptor pair-PM6:IT-4F is an ideal candidate for the large scale roll-to-roll production of efficient PSCs in the future.

Abstract:A new wide bandgap conjugated polymer, PFBZ, based on fluorination thienyl conjugated benzodithiophene (BDT-2F) as a donor unit and difluorinated benzotriazole (BTz-2F) as an acceptor unit, was synthesized for non-fullerene polymer solar cells (PSCs) application. Compared with the analogue based on non-fluorinated BDT unit (PBZ), PFBZ shows a lower HOMO level, a similar wide optical bandgap with a higher extinction coefficient, and a slightly higher hole mobility. As a result, without any extra treatments, the PFBZ: ITIC-based device exhibits a higher PCE of 10.4% with V-oc of 0.89 V, J(sc) of 18.8 mA cm(-2), and FF of 62% in comparison with the PCE of 8.0% with V-oc of 0.79 V, J(sc) of 17.2 mA cm(-2), and FF of 59% for PBZ: ITIC-based devices. Furthermore, the photovoltaic performance of the PFBZ: ITIC-based devices are relatively insensitive to the thickness of the active layer and the PCE still remains 8.9% with a thickness of up to 200 nm. In addition, the PFBZ: ITIC-based devices exhibit high tolerance to the thermal annealing, and still show a high PCE of 9.3% with annealing at 150 degrees C for 1 h. These results indicate that PFBZ is a promising candidate for the large scale manufacturing and practical application of high-efficiency PSCs.

Abstract:A new weak electron‐deficient building block, bis(2‐ethylhexyl) 2,5‐bis(5‐bromothiophen‐2‐yl) thieno[3,2‐ b ]thiophene‐3,6‐dicarboxylate ( TT‐Th ), is incorporated to construct a wide‐bandgap (1.88 eV) polymer PBDT‐TT for nonfullerene polymer solar cells (NF‐PSCs). PBDT‐TT possesses suitable energy levels and complementary absorption when blended with both ITIC analogues ( ITIC and IT‐M ) and a near‐infrared (NIR) acceptor ( 6TIC ). Moreover, PBDT‐TT exhibits good conjugated planarity and preferable face‐on orientation in the blended thin film, which are beneficial for charge transfer and carrier transport. The PSCs based on PBDT‐TT : IT‐M and PBDT‐TT : 6TIC blend films yield high power conversion efficiencies of 11.38% and 11.03%, respectively. To the best of the authors' knowledge, the PCE of 11.03% for PBDT‐TT : 6TIC‐ based device is one of the highest values reported for NIR NF‐PSCs. This work demonstrates that TT‐Th is a useful new electron‐accepting building block for making p‐type wide bandgap polymers for efficient NIR NF‐PSCs.

Abstract:Nonfullerene polymer solar cells (PSCs) are fabricated with a perylene monoimide‐based n‐type wide‐bandgap organic semiconductor PMI‐F‐PMI as an acceptor and a bithienyl‐benzodithiophene‐based wide‐bandgap copolymer PTZ1 as a donor. The PSCs based on PTZ1:PMI‐F‐PMI (2:1, w/w) with the treatment of a mixed solvent additive of 0.5% N‐methyl pyrrolidone and 0.5% diphenyl ether demonstrate a very high open‐circuit voltage (Voc) of 1.3 V with a higher power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 6%. The high Voc of the PSCs is a result of the high‐lying lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) of −3.42 eV of the PMI‐F‐PMI acceptor and the low‐lying highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) of −5.31 eV of the polymer donor. Very interestingly, the exciton dissociation efficiency in the active layer is quite high, even though the LUMO and HOMO energy differences between the donor and acceptor materials are as small as ≈0.08 and 0.19 eV, respectively. The PCE of 6% is the highest for the PSCs with a Voc as high as 1.3 V. The results indicate that the active layer based on PTZ1/PMI‐F‐PMI can be used as the front layer in tandem PSCs for achieving high Voc over 2 V.

An alternating polymer with fluorinated quinoxaline and 2,7-carbazole segments for photovoltaic devices

Abstract:A novel alternating polymer, poly{[N-9'-heptadecyl-2,7-carbazole]-alt-5,5-[5',8'-di-2-thienyl-(60-fluoro2',3'- bis-(3 "-octyloxyphenyl)-quinoxaline)]} (PCzFTQx), based on mono-fluorinated quinoxaline derivative and 2,7-carbazole was synthesized and applied as electron donor material in polymer solar cells. Compared to the corresponding counterpart polymer without fluorine substituent (PCzTQx), PCzFTQx possesses similar absorption properties and optical bandgap (similar to 2.0 eV). However, the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) energy level of PCzFTQx was lowered to similar to 5.31 eV, about 0.09 eV deeper than that of PCzTQx. Benefit from the low-lying HOMO energy level caused by the strong electron deficient fluorine atom on the quinoxaline unit, the optimized photovoltaic device based on PCzFTQx and phenyl-C-71-butyric acid methyl ester (PC71BM) exhibited an enhanced power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 5.19% with corresponding high open-circuit voltage (Voc) of 0.94 V, relatively to those of 4.72% and 0.82 V for PCzTQx-based device. The experimental data indicated that fluorinated quinoxaline based polymer PCzFTQx should be a promising donor for polymer solar cells.
Fluorinated Phenanthrenequinoxaline-Based D-A Type Copolymers for Non-Fullerene Polymer Solar Cells

Abstract:Three polymers with indacenodithiophene (IDT) as the electron-rich unit and phenanthrenequinoxaline (phanQ) or fluorine substituted phenanthrenequinoxaline (FphanQ, 2FphanQ) as the electron-deficient units have been synthesized. The band gaps of PIDT-phanQ, PIDT-FphanQ, PIDT-2FphanQ were estimated to be 1.68, 1.68 and 1.71 eV with a HOMO energy level of -5.28, -5.33 and -5.41 eV, respectively. The photovoltaic performance of the three polymers in non-fullerene polymer solar cells with Y6 as the acceptor material was carefully investigated. The corresponding devices showed improved V-oc as the fluorine atom increased in the phanQ unit, but the champion PCE was achieved in the PIDT-FphanQ:Y6 based device due to its higher J(sc) and FF. The best PCE was recorded to be 11.6% with a V-oc of 0.79 V, a J(sc) of 21.4 mA cm(-2) and a FF of 68.7% for the PIDT-FphanQ:Y6 blend without using additives. The results indicate that the proper design in donor and acceptor units of D-A conjugated polymer, i.e. introducing the moderate fluorine substitutes, will be able to simplify the processing for the efficient PSCs applications.
Near‐Infrared Electron Acceptors with Fluorinated Regioisomeric Backbone for Highly Efficient Polymer Solar Cells

Abstract:Solar photon-to-electron conversion with polymer solar cells (PSCs) has experienced rapid development in the recent few years. Even so, the exploration of molecules and devices in efficiently converting near-infrared (NIR) photons into electrons remains critical, yet challenging. Herein presented is a family of near-infrared nonfullerene acceptors (NIR NFAs, T1-T4) with fluorinated regioisomeric A-Aπ-D-Aπ-A backbones for constructing efficient single-junction and tandem PSCs with photon response up to 1000 nm. It is found that the tuning of the regioisomeric bridge (Aπ) and fluoro (F)-substituents on a molecular skeleton strongly influences the backbone conformation and conjugation, leading to the optimized optoelectronic and stable stacking of resultant NFAs, which eventually impacts the performance of derived PSCs. In PSCs, the proximal NFAs with varied F-atoms (T1-T3) mostly outperform than that of distal NFA (T4). Notably, single-junction PSC with PTB7-Th:T2 blend can reach 10.87% power conversion efficiency (PCE), after implementing a solvent additive to improve blend morphology. Moreover, efficient tandem PSCs are fabricated through integrating such NIR cells with mediate bandgap nonfullerene-based subcells, to achieve a PCE of 14.64%. The results reveal the structural design of organic semiconductor and device with improved photovoltaic performance.

Abstract:High-performance non-fullerene OSCs with PCEs of up to ca. 6.0% are demonstrated based on PBDTT-F-TT polymer and a molecular di-PBI acceptor through comprehensive molecular, interfacial, and device engineering. Impressive PCEs can also be retained in devices with relatively thick BHJ layer and processed through non-halogenated solvents, indicating these high-performance non-fullerene OSCs are promising for large-area printing applications.

Abstract:An alternating polymer (PFOFTQx) with 9,9-dioctylfluorene (FO) as electron-rich unit and fluorine substituted quinoxaline (FTQx) as electron-withdrawing unit was synthesized and characterized. PFOFTQx showed similar absorption property with that of the counterpart polymer without fluorine atom (synthesized APFO-15). However, the low-lying highest occupied molecular orbit (HOMO) energy level of PFOFTQx was −5.37eV, about 0.07eV smaller than that of synthesized APFO-15. In order to study the photovoltaic properties of the materials, polymer solar cells (PSCs) were fabricated with PFOFTQx as donor blended with [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PC61BM) as acceptor. The power conversion efficiency (PCE) of PSC was 1.77% with a high open-circuit voltage (Voc) of 0.90V for an optimized PFOFTQx:PC61BM weight ratio of 1:5, in comparison with that of synthesized APFO-15-based device (PCE of 1.60% with Voc of 0.77V). This study indicated that fluorine substituted quinoxaline-based polymers would be promising material with a higher Voc for the application in polymer solar cells.

Abstract:In organic solar cells, the absorption range and extinction coefficient of the active layer not only affect the charge separation and carrier transfer efficiency of excitons, but also influence the J SC, and thus the device efficiency. Herein, an efficient nonfullerene polymer solar cells (NF–PSCs) based on a medium-bandgap (MBG) polymer donor PBDTTS-TClQx comprising chlorinethiophene quinoxaline (Qx) unit and a small molecule nonfullerene acceptor (SM-NFA) Y6 is developed. The PBDTTS-TClQx shows a strong absorption in the wavelength region of 330∼750 nm with an optical band gaps (E g opt) of 1.68 eV, which is well complementary with that of Y6 (1.33 eV) and facilitates achieving of high short-circuit current (J SC) in PSCs. As a result, the PBDTTS-TClQx:Y6-based PSCs achieved a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 14.28% with a J SC of 25.9 mA cm−2. The J SC of 25.9 mA cm−2 achieved is among the highest reported for Qx-based polymer donors in PSCs.

Abstract:Here, a pair of A1 -D-A2 -D-A1 unfused ring core-based nonfullerene small molecule acceptors (NF-SMAs), BO2FIDT-4Cl and BT2FIDT-4Cl is synthesized, which possess the same terminals (A1 ) and indacenodithiophene unit (D), coupling with different fluorinated electron-deficient central unit (difluorobenzoxadiazole or difluorobenzothiadiazole) (A2 ). BT2FIDT-4Cl exhibits a slightly smaller optical bandgap of 1.56 eV, upshifted highest occupied molecular orbital energy levels, much higher electron mobility, and slightly enhanced molecular packing order in neat thin films than that of BO2FIDT-4Cl. The polymer solar cells (PSCs) based on BT2FIDT-4Cl:PM7 yield the best power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 12.5% with a Voc of 0.97 V, which is higher than that of BO2FIDT-4Cl-based devices (PCE of 10.4%). The results demonstrate that the subtle modification of A2 unit would result in lower trap-assisted recombination, more favorable morphology features, and more balanced electron and hole mobility in the PM7:BT2FIDT-4Cl blend films. It is worth mentioning that the PCE of 12.5% is the highest value in nonfused ring NF-SMA-based binary PSCs with high Voc over 0.90 V. These results suggest that appropriate modulation of the quinoid electron-deficient central unit is an effective approach to construct highly efficient unfused ring NF-SMAs to boost PCE and Voc simultaneously.

Abstract:Low band-gap, soluble conjugated copolymers were synthesized from 9,9-dioctylfluorene and 4,7-di-2-thienyl-2,1,3-benzothiadiazole (PFO-DBT) and different composition ratios were used for the donor material in bulk heterojunction polymer photovoltaic cells (PVCs). In PVCs made with PFO-DBT:PCBM (methano-fullerene [6,6]-phenyl C61-butyric acid methyl ester) blends, the spectral response is extended up to 650 nm and the open-circuit voltage (V-oc) is improved to 0.95 V. The energy conversion efficiency (eta(e)) in devices with optimized composition reaches 2.24% under an AM1.5 solar simulator (78.2 mW/cm(2)). In contrast to organic PVCs previously published, these PVCs retain high energy conversion efficiency at illumination up to 5 suns of AM1.5 spectral illumination. This feature allows high efficiency polymer PVC modules made in combination with a light concentrator. (C) 2004 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract:A nonfullerene electron acceptor (IEIC) based on indaceno[1,2-b:5,6-b']dithiophene and 2-(3-oxo-2,3-dihydroinden-1-ylidene)malononitrile was designed and synthesized. IEIC exhibited good thermal stability, strong absorption in the 500-750 nm region with an extinction coefficient of 1.1 x 10(5) M-1 cm(-1) at 672 nm, deep LUMO energy level (-3.82 eV) close to those of fullerenes, and a relatively high electron mobility of 2.1 x 10(-4) cm(2) V-1 s(-1). Fullerene-free polymer solar cells (PSCs) based on the blends of the IEIC acceptor and a low-bandgap polymer donor PTB7-TH, using a perylene diimide derivative as a cathode interlayer, showed power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of up to 6.31%, which is among the best PCEs reported for fullerene-free PSCs.

Abstract:A new fluorinated nonfullerene acceptor, ITIC-Th1, has been designed and synthesized by introducing fluorine (F) atoms onto the end-capping group 1,1-dicyanomethylene-3-indanone (IC). On the one hand, incorporation of F would improve intramolecular interaction, enhance the push-pull effect between the donor unit indacenodithieno[3,2-b]thiophene and the acceptor unit IC due to electron-withdrawing effect of F, and finally adjust energy levels and reduce bandgap, which is beneficial to light harvesting and enhancing short-circuit current density (JSC ). On the other hand, incorporation of F would improve intermolecular interactions through CF···S, CF···H, and CF···π noncovalent interactions and enhance electron mobility, which is beneficial to enhancing JSC and fill factor. Indeed, the results show that fluorinated ITIC-Th1 exhibits redshifted absorption, smaller optical bandgap, and higher electron mobility than the nonfluorinated ITIC-Th. Furthermore, nonfullerene organic solar cells (OSCs) based on fluorinated ITIC-Th1 electron acceptor and a wide-bandgap polymer donor FTAZ based on benzodithiophene and benzotriazole exhibit power conversion efficiency (PCE) as high as 12.1%, significantly higher than that of nonfluorinated ITIC-Th (8.88%). The PCE of 12.1% is the highest in fullerene and nonfullerene-based single-junction binary-blend OSCs. Moreover, the OSCs based on FTAZ:ITIC-Th1 show much better efficiency and better stability than the control devices based on FTAZ:PC71 BM (PCE = 5.22%).
