Abstract:The catalytic activity of noble-metal nanocrystals is mainly determined by their sizes and the facets exposed on the surface. For single crystals, it has been demonstrated that the Pd(100) surface is catalytically more active than both Pd(110) and Pd(111) surfaces for the CO oxidation reaction. Here we report the synthesis of Pd nanocrystals enclosed by {100} facets with controllable sizes in the range of 6–18 nm by manipulating the rate of reduction of the precursor. UV-vis spectroscopy studies indicate that the rate of reduction of Na 2 PdCl 4 can be controlled by adjusting the concentrations of Br − and Cl − ions added to the reaction mixture. Pd nanocrystals with different sizes were immobilized on ZnO nanowires and evaluated as catalysts for CO oxidation. We found that the activity of this catalytic system for CO oxidation showed a strong dependence on the nanocrystal size. When the size of the Pd nanocrystals was reduced from 18 nm to 6 nm, the maximum conversion rate was significantly enhanced by a factor of ∼10 and the corresponding maximum conversion temperature was lowered by ∼80 °C.

Abstract:The rational design of metallic mesoporous nanoarchitectures with hollow cavities offers an effective way to boost their performance in various catalytic fields. Herein, we report a facile two-step strategy for the fabrication of trimetallic PtPdCo mesoporous nanopolyhedra with hollow cavities (PtPdCo MHNPs), in which Pd@PtPdCo core-shell mesoporous nanopolyhedra (Pd@PtPdCo MNPs) are directly prepared by a simple chemical reduction reaction followed by etching of the Pd cores. The PtPdCo MHNPs show enhanced electrocatalytic activity and durability for the methanol oxidation reaction, enabled by their mesoporous and hollow nanoarchitectures coupled with trimetallic compositions.

Abstract:Rationally designing the composition and structure of metallic nanoparticles/reduced graphene oxide hybrids is highly important for synthesizing active electrocatalysts. Herein, we report a one-step method to efficiently synthesize dendritic bimetallic PtPd nanoparticles on reduced graphene oxide (DPtPd/rGO) in aqueous solution at room temperature. The proposed synthesis is performed by a simple sonication treatment of an aqueous reactive mixture containing K2PtCl4, Na2PdCl4, Pluronic F127 and ascorbic acid. This method is greatly simplified compared to the traditional multi-step-seeded growth or other hydrothermal syntheses. The as-made DPtPd/rGO hybrid consists in spatially and locally separated dendritic PtPd nanoparticles well-dispersed on the surface of rGO and is an active catalyst for methanol oxidation and oxygen reduction reactions. The proposed strategy is an effective method to directly fabricate metals/rGO hybrids for electrocatalytic applications.
Ph-Dependent Growth of Atomic Pd Layers on Trisoctahedral Gold Nanoparticles to Realize Enhanced Performance in Electrocatalysis and Chemical Catalysis

Abstract:In this work, the controlled epitaxial growth of ultrathin Pd shells of a few atomic layers (denoted as nL) on the surfaces of gold nanoparticle (Au NP) cores of different morphologies (trisoctahedral, cubic, and spherical shapes) in the presence of cetyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTAC) was achieved by regulating the pH value of the aqueous CTAC solution and finely tuning the amount of the Pd precursor. It was found that the critical shell thickness for epitaxial Pd growth at the optimal pH value was 4 atomic layers, taking {331}-faceted trisoctahedral (TOH) Au@Pd-nL NPs as an example, on the basis of the results of atomic-resolution high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM) images. Moreover, the resulting TOH Au@Pd-1L NPs (100.9 m(2) g(-1), 13.2 A mg(Pd)(-1) and 13.1 mA cm(-2)) exhibited excellent electrocatalytic performance and long-term electrocatalytic activity for ethanol oxidation, around 4.8-fold, 66-fold, and 21.8-fold better than commercial Pd/C catalysts (31 m(2) g(-1), 0.2 A mg(Pd)(-1), and 0.6 mA cm(-2)). Furthermore, the resulting TOH Au@Pd-1L NPs not only markedly enhance the chemical catalytic activity for the reduction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP), but also allow the in situ surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) monitoring of the reaction process of the Pd-catalyzed reduction of 4-NTP. Thus, our work may provide a new way to fabricate core-shell (CS) bimetallic NPs with the merits of both metal outer shells (excellent catalytic performance in electrocatalysis and chemical catalysis) and Au NP cores (reaction process by in situ SERS monitoring).

Abstract:Hollow structures have attracted ever-growing interest owing to their various excellent properties. However, a facile strategy for their fabrication is still desired. Herein, PdPt alloy with three different morphologies, that is, cubes, hollow cubes, and truncated octahedrons, is synthesized by using a one-pot, template-free method. The mechanism and dynamics of this system is also studied in detail. In particular, the hollow cubic structure represents enhanced catalytic activity in both coupling reactions and in the electrochemical oxidation of formic acid.

Abstract:Concave palladium nanocrystals are attractive for their superior catalytic ability arising from high densities of atomic steps and kinks. However, it is still a challenge to generate the concave surface, which is not favored by thermodynamics owing to its higher surface energy. In this study, concave palladium nanocubes have been synthesized kinetically in high yield via a facile one-step wet chemical method using sodium ascorbate (NaA) as the reductant in an aqueous solution. This process allows independent control of the average edge length and the surface curvature of the nanocubes, respectively. The particle morphology can be tuned by changing the reducing rate during the reaction. Right bipyramids and 5-fold twinned nanorods with concave surfaces have also been synthesized with two reductants at the different stages or an appropriate amount of ascorbic acid only. Remarkable enhancements in both electrocatalytic activity and stability are observed on concave Pd nanocubes and twinned nanocrystals over conventional Pd nanocrystals with flat surfaces and commercial Pd/C.

Abstract:In this paper, we describe how multipod Pd nanocrystals (NCs) have been synthesized on the gram scale by means of a simple solidliquid phase reaction route (i.e., thermal reduction of solid Pd(CH3COO)2 in the liquid mixture of dodecylamine, oleic acid, and 1-octadecene under a temperature-programmed mode). The nanostructure evolves from the initially generated larger polyhedral NCs into smaller ones and then into the final multipods. The dodecylamine acts as both a mild reductant and a promoter, which affects the reduction rate and decreases the size of the initially formed polyhedral PdNCs. The morphology of the final NCs, such as tri- and tetrapods, may be determined by the number of growing points on each polyhedral NC. According to the temperature- and time-dependent experiments, a multistep growth mechanism including digestive ripening, oriented attachment, and fusion process is proposed. This simple solidliquid phase reaction route can be extended to prepare other multipod metal nanostructures. The multipod PdNCs are found to have a high electrochemically active surface area and possess excellent electrocatalytic performance toward the oxidation of formic acid. Relative to that of polyhedral Pd and commercial Pd black catalysts, the multipod PdNCs exhibit much higher catalytic activity and long-term stability, which may make them a good candidate catalyst for direct formic acid fuel cells. This developed synthetic strategy together with the provided fundamental understanding of heterogeneous nucleation and growth has great potential for contriving a rational route to the preparation of advanced nanomaterials with specific morphology for catalytic and other functional applications.
Facile synthesis of Pd-Pt alloy concave nanocubes with high-index facets as electrocatalysts for methanol oxidation

Abstract:Pd-Pt alloy concave nanocubes enclosed by high-index facets were synthesized in ethylene glycol (EG) containing H2PtCl6 and Na2PdCl4 with ascorbic acid (AA) and KBr as reducing and capping agents, respectively. We found that the combination of bromide-induced galvanic replacement and co-reduction was responsible for the formation of these alloy concave nanocubes. The composition of the Pd-Pt alloy concave nanocubes was also tuned by varying the molar ratio of Pd to Pt salt precursors fed in the reaction. In addition, the variation in composition had a great impact on the rate of galvanic replacement, and thus the concave content of such alloy nanocrystals. These Pd-Pt alloy concave nanocubes showed composition-dependent catalytic activity for methanol oxidation, with Pd40Pt60-based catalysts exhibiting the highest activity. Compared to the commercial Pt/C, the Pd40Pt60 alloy concave nanocubes showed much improved tolerance toward CO poisoning, together with 4.6 times enhancement in specific activity for methanol oxidation due to possible synergetic effects between Pd and Pt and the unique surface structure associated with high-index facets.

Abstract:The synthesis of highly uniform alloy nanocrystals with a concave feature is desirable for applications in catalysis but is an arduous task. This article proposes an initiative protocol for the fabrication of novel Cu-Pd alloy nanocrystals, wherein the volume of decylamine (DA) in the reaction system was found to greatly influence the formation of different morphologies, including the tetrahedron (TH), concave tetrahedron (CTH), rhombohedral-tetrapod (RTP), and tetrapod (TP). The alloy structure of the products arises from the coordination interaction between the DA and metal ions, which affects the reduction potential of Cu and Pd species, and thus yields co-reduction. Other reaction parameters, such as the type of ligand, amount of reductant, and temperature, were also altered to study the growth mechanism, yielding consistent conclusions in the diffusion-controlled regime. As a catalyst, 48-nm Cu-Pd concave tetrahedral nanocrystals were highly active for the hydrogenation of 3-nitrostyrene and exhibited >99.9% chemoselectivity to C=C instead of -NO 2 .

Abstract:This article describes a systematic study of the galvanic replacement reaction between PtCl(6)(2-) ions and Pd nanocrystals with different shapes, including cubes, cuboctahedrons, and octahedrons. It was found that Br(-) ions played an important role in initiating, facilitating, and directing the replacement reaction. The presence of Br(-) ions led to the selective initiation of galvanic replacement from the {100} facets of Pd nanocrystals, likely due to the preferential adsorption of Br(-) ions on this crystallographic plane. The site-selective galvanic replacement resulted in the formation of Pd-Pt bimetallic nanocrystals with a concave structure owing to simultaneous dissolution of Pd atoms from the {100} facets and deposition of the resultant Pt atoms on the {111} facets. The Pd-Pt concave nanocubes with different weight percentages of Pt at 3.4, 10.4, 19.9, and 34.4 were also evaluated as electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Significantly, the sample with a 3.4 wt.% of Pt exhibited the largest specific electrochemical surface area and was found to be four times as active as the commercial Pt/C catalyst for the ORR in terms of equivalent Pt mass.

Abstract:Modulating electronic structures of single-atom metal cocatalysts is vital for highly active photoreduction of CO2, and it's especially challenging to develop a facile method to modify the dispersion of atomical photocatalytic sites. We herein report an ion-loading pyrolysis route to in-situ anchor Pd single atoms as well as twinned Pd nanoparticles on ultra-thin graphitic carbon nitride nanosheets (PdTP/PdSA-CN) for high-efficiency photoreduction of CO2. The anchored Pd twinned nanoparticles donate electrons to adjacent single Pd-N4 sites through the carbon nitride networks, and the optimized PdTP/PdSA-CN photocatalyst exhibits a CO evolution rate up to 46.5 mu mol g-1 h-1 with nearly 100% selectivity. As revealed by spectroscopic and theoretical analyses, the superior photocatalytic activity is attributed to the lowered desorption barrier of carbonyl species at electron-enriched Pd single atoms, together with the improved efficiencies of light-harvesting and charge separation/transport. This work has demonstrated the engineering of the electron density of single active sites with twinned metal nanoparticles assisted by strong electronic interaction with the support of the atomic metal, and unveiled the underlying mechanism for expedited photocatalytic efficiency.

Abstract:This article reports the design and successful implementation of a one-pot, polyol method for the synthesis of penta-twinned Pd nanowires with diameters below 8 nm and aspect ratios up to 100. The key to the success of this protocol is the controlled reduction of NaPdCl by diethylene glycol and ascorbic acid through the introduction of NaI and HCl. The I and H ions can slow the reduction kinetics by forming PdI and inhibiting the dissociation of ascorbic acid, respectively. When the initial reduction rate is tuned into the proper regime, Pd decahedral seeds with a penta-twinned structure appear during nucleation. In the presence of I ions as a selective capping agent toward the Pd(100) surface, the decahedral seeds can be directed to grow axially into penta-twinned nanorods and then nanowires. The Pd nanowires are found to evolve into multiply twinned particles if the reaction time is extended beyond 1.5 h, owing to the involvement of oxidative etching. When supported on carbon, the Pd nanowires show greatly enhanced specific electrocatalytic activities, more than five times the value for commercial Pd/C toward formic acid oxidation and three times the value for Pt/C toward oxygen reduction under an alkaline condition. In addition, the carbon-supported Pd nanowires exhibit greatly enhanced electrocatalytic durability toward both reactions. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the Pd nanowires can serve as sacrificial templates for the conformal deposition of Pt atoms to generate Pd@Pt core-sheath nanowires and then Pd-Pt nanotubes with a well-defined surface structure.

Abstract:Certain bimetallic nanocrystals (NCs) possess promising catalytic properties for electrochemical energy conversion. Herein, we report a facile method for the one-step synthesis of porous dendritic PtNi NCs in aqueous solution at room temperature that contrasts with the traditional multistep thermal decomposition approach. The dendritic PtNi NCs assembled by interconnected arms are efficient catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction. This direct and efficient method is favorable for the up-scaled synthesis of active catalysts used in electrochemical applications.

Abstract:A new type of concave cubic Pd@Au core-shell nanocrystals is synthesized through a kinetically controlled growth process. Pd nanocubes of 56 nm are used as the inner core, and CTAC and Br- are used as the capping agent and selective adsorbent, respectively. A suitable ratio of HAuCl4 and cubic Pd seeds and the presence of Br- anions are critical to the growth of the concave cubic Pd@Au core-shell nanocrystals. The fast deposition rate on the corners of the cubic Pd seeds promotes the overgrowth of the Au outer shell along the < 111 > direction, leading to the formation of concave cubic nanostructures. The reduction process is monitored by the surface plasmon resonance spectra of the nanocrystals, and the extinction band became broader and red shifted as the nanocrystals became larger. The electrocatalytic properties of the concave cubic Pd@Au core-shell nanocrystals were investigated with the cathodic electrochemiluminescence reaction of luminol and H2O2. A possible electrocatalytic mechanism was proposed and analyzed.

Abstract:Hierarchical hybrid metal nanostructures with complex architectures are attracting considerable attention because of their tunable properties, novel functions, and promising applications. In this work, the controllable synthesis of unique hierarchical Au/PdAg heterostructures consisting of regularly aligned PdAg nanosheets epitaxially grown on Au nanorods (Au/PdAg NRNSs) was realized in the presence of a mixture of dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB) and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB). If DTAB was used as the single surfactant, PdAg nanodendrite-tipped Au nanorods (Au/PdAg NRNDs) were produced, whereas Pd nanoblock-tipped Au nanorods (Au/Pd NRNBs) were obtained in the absence of Ag+ ions. It was revealed that a desirable combination of appropriate DTAB and CTAB concentrations is crucial to the formation of the unusual Au/PdAg NRNSs. When the three nano-heterostructures were used as catalysts for the electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction, the Au-PdAg NRNSs exhibited the best catalytic performance. Furthermore, all of the three heterostructures showed pronounced plasmon-enhanced electrocatalytic activity with the Au/PdAg NRNSs exhibiting the best photo-assisted electrocatalytic activity. This work may open new avenues toward rational design and controllable synthesis of well-defined heterostructured nanoparticles with novel architectures and promising applications.

Abstract:Concave trisoctahedral (TOH) Pd@Au core-shell nanocrystals bound by {331} facets have been synthesized for the first time. Pd nanocubes and cetyltrimethylammonium chloride were used as the structure-directing cores and capping agents, respectively. Their optical and electrocatalytic properties were investigated.
