Abstract:This article reports a systematic study on the seed-mediated growth of PdAu bimetallic nanocrystals with a variety of controlled morphologies. The key to the success of this synthesis is to manipulate the reaction kinetics by controlling a set of experimental parameters, which include the amount of ascorbic acid used as a reductant, the amount of HAuCl4 as a precursor to elemental Au, the reaction temperature, and the type of seeds employed. Starting from Pd nanocubes of 18 nm in edge length, PdAu bimetallic nanocrystals with a number of morphologies, which includes hybrid dimers, coreshell nanocubes with flat faces, and coreshell nanocubes with concave faces could all be obtained by simply speeding up the reduction of HAuCl4. The same synthesis and control could also be extended to seeds based on Pd octahedrons. For the first time, it was possible to generate Pd@Au coreshell nanocubes and octahedrons with concave faces. The Pd@Au coreshell nanocubes with concave faces exhibited enhanced activity in catalyzing the oxidization of ascorbic acid relative to their counterparts with flat faces or the cubic Pd seeds.

Abstract:Bimetallic nanocrystals consisting of two distinct metals such as Pd and Pt are attractive for a wide variety of catalytic and electrocatalytic applications as they can exhibit not only a combination of the properties associated with both metals but also enhancement or synergy due to a strong coupling between the two metals. With Pd as the base metal, many methods have recently been demonstrated for the synthesis of Pd-Pt bimetallic nanocrystals having a wide variety of different structures in the form of alloys, dendrites, core-shells, multi-shells, and monolayers. In this tutorial review, we begin with a brief discussion on the possible structures of Pd-Pt bimetallic nanocrystals, followed by an account of recent progress on synthetic approaches to such nanocrystals with controlled structures, shapes and sizes. In addition to the experimental procedures and mechanistic studies, a number of examples are presented to highlight the use of such bimetallic nanocrystals as catalysts or electrocatalysts for various applications with enhanced performance relative to their monometallic counterparts.

Abstract:Au-Pd bimetallic nanocrystals with well-defined dendritic morphology, uniform size, and homogeneous alloy structure were synthesized in an aqueous solution by using ascorbic acid as the reductant and triblock copolymer P123 as the stabilizing agent. In this synthesis, ascorbic acid played a key role in directing the nanodendritic morphology while the presence of Pd was mandatory for the formation of well-defined nanodendrites. Without Pd, only faceted nanoparticles of gold were formed under the same reaction conditions. Other reaction variables such as the addition sequence and the dropping rate of the metal precursors, the type and concentration of the stabilizing agents, and the reaction time and temperature were all found to affect the size uniformity and morphology perfectness to some extent. The Au/Pd atomic ratio could be tuned in a wide range without deteriorating the nanodendritic morphology. The as-prepared Au-Pd nanodendrites exhibited excellent catalytic activities toward electroxidation of methanol and reduction of 2-nitrophenol, and the catalytic performances could be effectively tuned by the Au/Pd ratio.
One-pot, seedless synthesis of flowerlike Au-Pd bimetallic nanoparticles with core-shell-like structure via sodium citrate coreduction of metal ions

Abstract:Bimetallic nanoparticles (NPs) comprised of gold (Au) and palladium (Pd) are promising catalysts in accelerating a variety of chemical reactions. The further performance enhancement greatly depends on the current efforts to create the synthetic methodology for optimizing NP morphology and structure. Here we report a one-pot and seedless synthesis of Au-Pd bimetallic NPs via citrate coreduction of Au and Pd ions. Due to the higher capacity of citrate in reducing Au ions, the nucleation of Au NPs is more favored than that of Pd. Consequently, the current system permits the production of bimetallic NPs with core-shell-like structure, namely an Au-rich core and Pd-rich shell. Moreover, the morphology of the as-synthesized NPs is also determined by the experimental variables, such as the Au-to-Pd feed ratio, dosage of sodium citrate, and charging sequence. With a good control of the nucleation and growth process, flowerlike Au-Pd bimetallic NPs with core-shell-like structures are synthesized. These flowerlike bimetallic NPs are the best in catalyzing formic acid oxidation and Suzuki coupling reaction in comparison to the Au-Pd bimetallic NPs with other morphologies.
Synthesis of Branched Au‐PdAg Hybrid Nanosheets by Controlled Reduction in a Galvanic Replacement Reaction

Abstract:We report a niche strategy to fabricate planar trimetallic nanocrystals with in-plane branches and a unique hybrid structure. The success of current work relies on the use of seeded growth to produce Au@Ag core-shell nanocubes, followed by the reaction with an excessive third metal precursor (i. e., Pd) via galvanic replacement reaction (GRR) in the presence of controlled reduction. The morphology of resulting products varied in the order of cube, concave cube, hollow cage, yolk-shell frame, and finally branched nanoplates with Au-PdAg hybrid structure. The controlled reduction involved in the GRR process, together with the use of Au seed at appropriate amounts and docosyltrimethylammonium chloride as the capping agent, is demonstrated to be crucial for the formation of such unique structure. When loaded on carbon black and working as electrocatalysts for electroxidation of ethanol in alkaline media, the current products exhibit satisfying electrocatalytic activity (e. g., 591 mA mgPd−1 in mass activity and 10.01 A m−2 in specific activity), improved kinetics, and long-term durability, as compared to commercial Pt/C. The present study offers a feasible route to applying precise spatial control over elemental metals for two-dimensional dendritic noble metal nanocrystals and could be potentially extended to other metals or alloy.

Abstract:Pd-based bimetallic nanoparticles have attracted much attention due to their promising applications in diverse fields. For example, in electro-oxidation of alcohol, the synergistic effects between different metals can significantly improve the resistance of Pd to sintering, coke deposition and CO poisoning. Although great progress has been achieved in the synthesis of Pd-based nanostructures, it is still lacking a robust protocol to synthesize Pd bimetallic nanostructures with desired shapes and dimensions. In this work, Au@Pd core–shell nanorods with tunable size of both core and shell were synthesized using a one-pot method. Both the dimensions of Pd shell and Au core can be tuned separately by altering reaction conditions. Compared with Pd cube and octahedron, Au@Pd core–shell nanorods exhibit superior activity in the electrochemical oxidation of ethanol due to the synergistic effects between Au core and Pd shell. This work not only develops a facile one-pot protocol for synthesizing Au@Pd core–shell nanostructures, but also sheds some light on the design and preparation of catalysts with enhanced electrocatalytic performance.

Abstract:Branched Pd nanodendrites have been synthesized by a very simple method, which have displayed substantially enhanced oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity compared with that of commercial Pd/C catalysts. The Pd nanodendrites show 4.8 times more activity on the basis of an equivalent noble metal mass for the ORR than the commercial Pd/C catalysts. Moreover, the Pd nanodendrite catalysts also exhibit superior ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) activity, making them excellent candidates as high performance multifunctional catalysts for both ORR and EOR.

Abstract:Colloidal noble metal-conducting polymer core–shell nanoparticles show promising applications in a wide diversity of areas, but it remains a great challenge to develop a convenient synthetic method allowing strict control over their size/dimension and facile modulation of their nanostructures. In this work, we report the synthesis of monodisperse gold dendrite@polypyrrole (AuD@PPy) core–shell nanoparticles with an eco-friendly one-step solution reaction by triggering oxidative polymerization of pyrrole with tetrachloroauric acid. As-prepared AuD@PPy nanoparticle is composed of a gold dendrite core coated by a thin PPy shell; the size and the thickness of the PPy shell could be adjusted by simply changing the pyrrole concentration. Benefiting from the protective effect of the PPy shell, the nanoparticles demonstrate enhanced catalytic durability toward the reductive reaction of methylene blue (MB) compared with the citrate-capped gold nanoparticles (AuNPs).

Abstract:A facile method for the rapid synthesis of dendritic PdAu alloyed bimetallic nanocrystals is demonstrated. The whole synthetic process is very simple just by mixing Na2PdCl4, HAuCl4, polyvinylpyrrolidone and hydroquinone and heated at 50°C for 15min. The as-prepared dendritic PdAu nanoparticles exhibit superior catalytic activity for methanol, ethanol and glycerol electrooxidation in alkaline solution, and their catalytic performance is composition-dependent.

Abstract:The synthesis of noble metal nanostructures with special morphology, structure, composition, and size has been an attractive research area because of their valuable applications in various fields, including optics, electronics, sensing and catalysis. In this work, the first Pd@Au core-shell nanotetrapods (Pd@Au CSNTPs) were synthesized through a facile seeded growth method. Specifically, Pd nanotetrapods were utilized as the substrate for Au coating through chemically reducing HAuCl4 with ascorbic acid (AA) in the presence of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP). The morphology, composition, and structure of Pd@Au CSNTPs were fully characterized by scanning and transmission electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy element mapping, X-ray powder diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy techniques, etc. Different from conventional spherical Au nanoparticles, the Pd@Au CSNTPs had a very wide surface plasmon resonance (SPR) absorption band in the visible and near-infrared regions (500-1400 nm), showing special SPR absorption features. Meanwhile, the Pd@Au CSNTPs exhibited remarkably enhanced catalytic activity for the hydrogenation reduction of nitro functional groups and the C=N bond because of their specific structural characteristics.

Abstract:We report a facile synthesis of Au@PdAg alloy core-shell nanocrystals in dendrite form, having tunable size and composition. In particular, using spherical Au nanoparticles as seeds, the co-reduction of Pd and Ag precursor in growth stage results in the formation of PdAg alloy shells with a dendrite shape. Their size and elemental composition can be tuned by varying the seed amount and feeding ratio in Pd and Ag precursor, respectively, illustrating the versatility of the current synthetic strategy. The size, morphology, and elemental composition of the products have been characterized using a set of techniques, including SEM, TEM, XRD, XPS, HAADF-STEM, and EDX-STEM mapping. When working as electrocatalysts, the current Au@PdAg alloy core-shell nanocrystals supported by carbon black exhibit enhanced activity and excellent operation stability for electroxidation of ethanol as compared to commercial Pd/C. The current work offers a feasible strategy to preparation of multi-metallic core-shell dendritic nanocrystals with controllable size and composition and could find important use in fuel cells and related fields.
Facile Synthesis of Bimetallic Au@Pd Nanoparticles with Core-shell Structures on Graphene Nanosheets

Abstract:In this paper, we report a simple one-step thermal reducing method for synthesis of bimetallic Au@Pd nanoparticles with core-shell structures on the graphene surface. This new type of Au@Pd-G composites is characterized by transmission electron microscopy, high resolution transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. It is found that Au@Pd nanoparticles with an average diameter of 11 nm are well dispersed on the graphene surface, and the Au core quantity as well as the Pd shell thickness can be quantitatively controlled by loading different amounts of metallic precursors, and the involved core-shell structure formation mechanism is also discussed. The ternary Pt/Au@Pd-G composites can also be synthetized by the subsequent Pt doping. The catalytic performance of Au@Pd-G composites toward methanol electro-oxidation in acidic media is investigated. The results show that Au@Pd-G composites exhibit higher catalytic activity, better stability and stronger tolerance to CO poisoning than Pd-G and Au-G counterparts.

Abstract:A new type of concave cubic Pd@Au core-shell nanocrystals is synthesized through a kinetically controlled growth process. Pd nanocubes of 56 nm are used as the inner core, and CTAC and Br- are used as the capping agent and selective adsorbent, respectively. A suitable ratio of HAuCl4 and cubic Pd seeds and the presence of Br- anions are critical to the growth of the concave cubic Pd@Au core-shell nanocrystals. The fast deposition rate on the corners of the cubic Pd seeds promotes the overgrowth of the Au outer shell along the < 111 > direction, leading to the formation of concave cubic nanostructures. The reduction process is monitored by the surface plasmon resonance spectra of the nanocrystals, and the extinction band became broader and red shifted as the nanocrystals became larger. The electrocatalytic properties of the concave cubic Pd@Au core-shell nanocrystals were investigated with the cathodic electrochemiluminescence reaction of luminol and H2O2. A possible electrocatalytic mechanism was proposed and analyzed.

Abstract:Hierarchical porous noble-metal based structures are of great interest for energy electrocatalysis on account of their unique shape which not only provides high accessible surface area and consequently numerous catalytic active sites but also facilitates mass transport for rapid kinetics. We report a wet chemical approach to synthesize highly branched Pd nanodendrites with tunable sizes ranging from 25 to 125 nm via sequential oriented attachment growth and epitaxial growth. With the merits of mesoporous structure, atomic steps and corners, and grain boundaries, the 25 nm Pd nanodendrites deliver peak current density of 1625.5 mA mg Pd1 toward formic acid oxidation, the highest value among all reported branched Pd nanostructures, and exhibit half-wave potential of 0.882 V (vs. RHE) for the oxygen reduction reaction, 25 mV more positive than the Commercial Pt/C. The synthetic strategy demonstrated in this work can be further extended to create advanced nanocrystals for broad applications, such as in energy and biosensing systems and surface-enhanced Raman scattering.

Abstract:Bimetallic PtPb nanodendrites with a single-crystalline structure were obtained by a facile one-pot strategy. The as-synthesized dendritic structure was well characterized and the growth mechanism was investigated. PtPb nanodendrites exhibited superior activity (5.1 times higher than commercial Pd black) and strong anti-poisoning ability for electrooxidation of formic acid.

Abstract:Uniform PdAuAg alloy nanocrystals with tunable compositions are facilely prepared via a one-pot synthesis. The use of carbon monoxide as the effective agent is crucial to assist the reduction of multiple metallic precursors simultaneously, which is greenly released from in situ thermal decomposition of W(CO) 6 in a capped glass vial. The resulting PdAuAg products are featured within the size range of 9.3~11.7 nm and quasi-spherical shape, and their elemental compositions can be readily tuned by varying the molar ratios of corresponding metallic precursors. Interestingly, when the reductant is varied from carbon monoxide to ascorbic acid, the resulting products showed Au@PdAg core-shell elemental distribution, indicating the necessary role of carbon monoxide in dominating the formation of PdAuAg nanocrystals with a fully alloy phase. Using the reduction of 4-nitrophenol as the model reaction, their catalytic properties are evaluated, where the Pd 4.1 Au 3.3 Ag 2.6 nanocrystals showed the highest apparent rate constant. Results from DFT simulations prove that the 4-nitrophenol adsorption shows a facet and atomic ratio-dependent behavior. The current work provides a feasible strategy to create trimetallic nanocrystals with isotropic shapes and tunable compositions, which could be potentially extended to other metals/alloys. Site-specific Growth of AgPd Nanodendrites on Highly Purified Au Bipyramids with Remarkable Catalytic Performance.

Abstract:Au nanorods have been extensively explored in various applications as the template for heterogeneous metallic nanostructures. However, Au bipyramids (AuBPs) have been paid much less attention although they possess an intriguing crystalline structure and extremely superior plasmonic properties which are absent in AuNRs. The state-of-the-art synthesis cannot produce pure AuBPs, which has become a major barrier to their various applications like catalysis since purity is often critical for achieving the desired performance. Herein, we have shown a facile approach to obtain large-scale high-purity AuBPs. The purity of AuBPs can be improved from 30 to 50% for the as-synthesized AuBP solution to over 95% for the purified solution. Site-specific growth of AgPd nanodendrites on multiply twinned AuBPs from core-shell to tipped nanostructures was achieved for the first time by coupling a galvanic replacement with a co-reduction process, which show remarkable catalytic activity in the reduction reaction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) by NaBH4. The use of ascorbic acid (AA) as a reductant in the co-reduction process and the intriguing crystalline structure of AuBPs play a critical role in forming these unique structures. We believe that this work would provide a general strategy to prepare high-purity AuBP based trimetallic nanostructures, which offers the opportunity for AuBPs to be widely used in catalysis or other plasmonic-effect related applications in the near future.

Abstract:The development of an efficient synthesis method to produce multimetallic nanoparticles (NPs) with a desirable structure is strongly required to clarify the structure-composition-property relationship of NPs and to investigate their possible applications. However, the controlled synthesis of NPs consisting of multiple (n ≥ 3) noble metal components has been relatively unexplored in comparison to bimetallic NPs. In the present work, we have demonstrated a facile one-pot aqueous approach for the controlled synthesis of trimetallic Au@PdPt core-shell NPs with a well-defined octahedral Au core and a highly crystalline dendritic Pd-Pt alloy shell (Auoct@PdPt NPs). The simultaneous reduction of multiple metal precursors with dual reducing agents, namely, ascorbic acid and hydrazine, gave a fine control over the nucleation and growth kinetics of NPs, resulting in the formation of novel Auoct@PdPt NPs. The prepared NPs showed excellent catalytic performance for methanol electrooxidation, which can be attributed to their optimized binding strength toward adsorbate molecules due to the improved charge transfer between core and shell of the NPs. The present strategy can offer a convenient and valuable way to fabricate multicomponent nanostructures with desired structures and functions.

We report a study on using penta-fold twinned (PFT) Au nanorods (NRs) as seeds to synthesize PFT Pd-Au-Pd segmental NRs. The results show that the different crystal structures of seeds, I− and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) significantly affect the deposition of Pd on seeds surface. The PFT Pd-Au-Pd segmental NRs showed excellent surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) performance and improved catalytic activity. Our research is of great significance for the synthesis of similar nanostructures, and we also shown that PFT Pd-Au-Pd segmental NRs might have potential applications in studying the process of organic reaction.
