Abstract:This article reports a seed-mediated approach to polyhedral nanocrystals of Pd with controlled sizes, shapes, and different proportions of {100} to {111} facets on the surface. The success of this synthesis relies on the use of Pd nanocubes with different sizes as the seeds and the use of formaldehyde as a relatively mild reducing agent. By controlling the ratio of Pd precursor to the seed, we obtained uniform polyhedrons such as truncated cubes, cuboctahedrons, truncated octahedrons, and octahedrons in a purity approaching 100%. The sizes of these polyhedrons were determined by the edge length of the cubic seeds. Since these Pd polyhedrons were characterized by different proportions of {111} to {100} facets, they could serve as model catalysts to uncover the correlation between the surface structure and the catalytic performance for formic acid oxidation. Our measurements indicate that Pd nanocubes exhibited the highest maximum current density in the forward anodic scan, but the peak position was also located at a potential higher than those of the other polyhedrons. When both the current density and the operation potential are taken into consideration, Pd nanocubes with slight truncation at the corners become the best choice of catalyst for formic acid oxidation. Our study also revealed that the size of Pd polyhedrons had essentially no effect on the activity for formic acid oxidation.
Facile Synthesis of CuFe2O4 Crystals Efficient for Water Oxidation and H2O2 Reduction

Abstract:Synthesis of a robust and bifunctional catalyst with earth-abundant element efficient for electrocatalytic reduction and oxidation is crucial in electrocatalytic energy conversion and storage. Herein we show that a facile method to synthesize CuFe2O4 crystals with octahedral shape as a bifunctional catalyst efficient for water oxidation and H2O2 reduction. These as-obtained CuFe2O4 catalysts exhibited high-performance for water oxidation (2.2 times current density higher than that of commercial RuO2), lower Tafel slope (similar to 50 mV dec(-1)), larger anodic current density and much enhanced electrochemical durability. Besides, the resulted CuFe2O4 catalyst was also efficient for electrocatalytic H2O2 reduction, it shows 5-fold increment of current density in the presence of 5 mM H2O2, high sensitivity and much improved stability. The cost-effective synthesis route holds great promise for the controllable synthesis of nanostructured spinel, and is expected to show promising applications in the generation of renewable energy. Abstract:Hollow structures have attracted ever-growing interest owing to their various excellent properties. However, a facile strategy for their fabrication is still desired. Herein, PdPt alloy with three different morphologies, that is, cubes, hollow cubes, and truncated octahedrons, is synthesized by using a one-pot, template-free method. The mechanism and dynamics of this system is also studied in detail. In particular, the hollow cubic structure represents enhanced catalytic activity in both coupling reactions and in the electrochemical oxidation of formic acid.

Abstract:In this study, a PtPdCu catalyst for formic acid oxidation was synthesized through a one-pot synthesis method. The PtPdCu nanoparticles with truncated-octahedral morphology were obtained by reducing Pt(acac)2, Pd(acac)2 and Cu(acac)2 in ethylene glycol solution under the effects of PVP and KBr. To determine the electrocatalytic performance of the PtPdCu nanoparticles with truncated-octahedral morphology, cyclic voltammetry was carried out in solutions of 0.5 M H2SO4 and 0.5 M H2SO4 containing 1 M HCOOH. According to the electrochemical results, the PtPdCu nanoparaticles possessed higher activity and stability toward the oxidation of formic acid than commercial Pt black due to the addition of Cu and Pd elements.Graphical Abstract

Abstract:Atomic dispersed metal sites in single-atom catalysts are highly mobile and easily sintered to form large particles, which deteriorates the catalytic performance severely. Moreover, lack of criterion concerning the role of the metal-support interface prevents more efficient and wide application. Here, a general strategy is reported to synthesize stable single atom catalysts by crafting on a variety of cobalt-based nanoarrays with precisely controlled architectures and compositions. The highly uniform, well-aligned, and densely packed nanoarrays provide abundant oxygen vacancies (17.48%) for trapping Pd single atoms and lead to the creation of 3D configured catalysts, which exhibit very competitive activity toward low temperature CO oxidation (100% conversion at 90 degrees C) and prominent long-term stability (continuous conversion at 60 degrees C for 118 h). Theoretical calculations show that O vacancies at high-index {112} facet of Co(x)O(y)nanocrystallite are preferential sites for trapping single atoms, which guarantee strong interface adhesion of Pd species to cobalt-based support and play a pivotal role in preventing the decrement of activity, even under moisture-rich conditions (approximate to 2% water vapor). The progress presents a promising opportunity for tailoring catalytic properties consistent with the specific demand on target process, beyond a facile design with a tunable metal-support interface.

Abstract:The rational design and synthesis of anisotropic 3D nanostructures with specific composition, morphology, surface structure, and crystal phase is of significant importance for their diverse applications. Here, the synthesis of well-crystalline lotus-thalamus-shaped Pt-Ni anisotropic superstructures (ASs) via a facile one-pot solvothermal method is reported. The Pt-Ni ASs with Pt-rich surface are composed of one Ni-rich core with face-centered cubic (fcc) phase, Ni-rich arms with hexagonal close-packed phase protruding from the core, and facet-selectively grown Pt-rich lotus seeds with fcc phase on the end surfaces of the arms. Impressively, these unique Pt-Ni ASs exhibit superior electrocatalytic activity and stability toward the hydrogen evolution reaction under alkaline conditions compared to commercial Pt/C and previously reported electrocatalysts. The obtained overpotential is as low as 27.7 mV at current density of 10 mA cm(-2), and the turnover frequency reaches 18.63 H-2 s(-1) at the overpotential of 50 mV. This work provides a new strategy for the synthesis of highly anisotropic superstructures with a spatial heterogeneity to boost their promising application in catalytic reactions.

Abstract:The rational construction of multi-dimensional layered noble metal nanostructures is a great challenge since noble metals are not layer-structured materials. Herein, we report a one-pot hydrothermal synthetic method for PtCu hierarchical concave layered triangular (HCLT) nanostructures using DL-carnitine, KI, poly (vinylpyrrolidone), CuCl2, and H2PtCl6. The PtCu HCLT nanostructure is comprised of multilayered triangular dendrites. Its layer number is tunable by changing DL-carnitine concentrations, and the concavity/convexity of the PtCu triangle nanostructures is tunable by changing the H2PtCl6/CuCl2 ratio or KI concentrations. Hierarchical trigonal bipyramid nanoframes are also obtained under certain conditions. Because of its advantageous nanostructure and bimetallic synergetic effect, the obtained PtCu HCLT nanostructure exhibits enhanced electrocatalytic activity and prolonged stability to formic acid oxidation compared to commercial Pt black, Pd/C and some other nanostructures.

Abstract:The pathway of formic acid electrooxidation strongly depends on the amount of three neighbouring Pt or Pd atoms in the surface of Pd- or Pt-based catalysts. Here, Pt decorated Pd/C nanoparticles (the optimal atomic ratio, Pd : Pt = 20:1) were designed and then synthesized through a facile galvanic replacement reaction where the amount of three neighbouring Pt or Pd atoms markedly decreased. As a result, discontinuous Pd and Pt atoms suppressed CO formation and exhibited unprecedented catalytic activity and stability toward formic acid electrooxidation while the cost was almost the same as that of Pd/C.

Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) hierarchical Pt-Cu tetragonal, highly branched, and dendritic superstructures have been synthesized by a facile template-free hydrothermal approach, showing growth patterns along (111, 110), (111), and (100) planes, respectively. These structures have been characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) and a detailed formation mechanism has been developed, which shows that the in situ formed I2 and the galvanic replacement reaction between Cu and Pt4+ may guide the formation of these superstructures. The comparative electrocatalytic properties have been investigated for methanol and ethanol oxidation. Due to their interconnected arms, sufficient absorption sites, and exposed surfaces, these superstructures exhibit enhanced electrocatalytic performance for electro-oxidation of methanol and ethanol when compared with commercial Pt/C and Pt black.

Abstract:Tailoring composition and structure are significantly important to improve the utilization and optimize the performance of the precious Pt catalyst toward various reactions, which greatly relies on the feasible synthesis approach. Herein, we demonstrate that Cu-rich Cu5Pt alloys with unique excavated dodecahedral frame-like structure (Cu5Pt nanoframes) can be synthesized via simply adjusting the amounts of salt precursors and surfactants under hydrothermal conditions. It is established that the presence of hexamethylenetetramine and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, as well as the selection of a proper Pt/Cu ratio are key for the acquisition of the target product. The immediate appeal of this material stems from frame-like architecture and ultralow Pt content involved, which can be used to greatly improve the utilization efficiency of Pt atoms. When benchmarked against commercial catalysts, the developed Cu5Pt nanostructures display superior electrocatalytic performance toward formic acid oxidation, owing to unique electronic effect and ensemble effect. This work elucidates a promising methodology for the synthesis of Pt-based nanostructures while highlights the significance of composition and structure in electrocatalysis.

Abstract:The controllable preparation of noble metallic nanocrystals with a 3D architecture is of great interest for electrocatalysis applications due to their enhanced atomic utilization, facilitated mass transport, and other attractive properties. In this work, a facile, one-pot, and surfactant-free method of synthesizing heterophase sponge-like Pd (S-Pd) is developed. The prepared S-Pd has a four-fold higher peak current density and better durability than a commercial Pd/C catalyst for formic acid oxidation. It therefore has great potential as an anode catalyst for direct formic acid fuel cells.

Abstract:Inspired by the unique properties of ultrathin 2D nanomaterials and excellent catalytic activities of noble metal nanostructures for renewable fuel cells, a facile method is reported for the high-yield synthesis of ultrathin 2D PdCu alloy nanosheets under mild conditions. Impressively, the obtained PdCu alloy nanosheet after being treated with ethylenediamine can be used as a highly efficient electrocatalyst for formic acid oxidation. The study implicates that the rational design and controlled synthesis of an ultrathin 2D noble metal alloy may open up new opportunities for enhancing catalytic activities of noble metal nanostructures.
Controlled One-Step Synthesis of Pt Decorated Octahedral Fe3O4and Its Excellent Catalytic Performance for CO Oxidation

Abstract:A facile one-step co-precipitation method has been applied for the synthesis of a Pt decorated octahedral Fe3O4 catalyst. The simple addition of a Pt(4+) and Fe(2+) mixture into a KOH solution leads to the simultaneous formation of an octahedral Fe3O4 and in situ reduction of Pt(4+). HAADF-STEM analysis demonstrates the good dispersion of the Pt species on the Fe3O4 (111) plane, and the resulting material exhibits excellent catalytic activity for CO oxidation under moisture conditions. The inevitably existing moisture contributes to the formation of reaction intermediate [COOH] and hence promotes the catalytic activity, which has been proved through in situ DRIFTS analysis.

Abstract:A successful strategy for reducing the content of Pt without compromising the activity of a Pt-based catalyst is to deposit Pt as an ultrathin overlayer on the surface of another metal. Here, we report a facile one-pot synthesis of Pd@Pt1L (1L: one atomic layer) core–shell octahedra using a solution-phase method. The success of this method relies on the use of metal precursors with markedly different reduction kinetics. In a typical synthesis, the ratio between the initial reduction rates of the Pd(II) and Pt(II) precursors differed by almost 100 times, favoring the formation of Pd–Pt bimetallic octahedra with a core–shell structure. The reduction of the Pt(II) precursor at a very slow rate and the use of a high temperature allowed the deposited Pt atoms to spread and cover the entire surface of Pd octahedral seeds formed in the initial stage. Abstract:Through a two-way control of hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) and hydrochloric acid (HCl), the PdCu nanoalloys with branched structures are synthesized in one step by hydrothermal reduction and used as electrocatalysts for formic acid oxidation reaction (FAOR). In this two-way control strategy, the CTAB is used as a structure-oriented surfactant, while a certain amount of HCl is used to control the reaction kinetics for achieving gradual growth of multi-dendritic structures. The characterizations including scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) suggest that PdCu nanoalloys with unique multi-dendritic branches have favorable electronic structure and lattice strain for electrocatalyzing the oxidation of formic acid. In specific, among the electrocatalysts with different Pd/Cu ratios, the Pd1Cu1 branched nanoalloys have the largest electrochemically active surface area (ECSA) and the best performance for the FAOR. The catalytic activity of the Pd1Cu1 branched nanoalloys is 2.4 times that of commercial Pd black. After the chronoamperometry test, the Pd1Cu1 branched nanoalloys still maintain their original morphologies and higher current density than that of the commercial Pd black. In addition, in the CO-stripping tests, the initial oxidation potential and the oxidation peak potential of the PdCu branched nanoalloys for CO adsorption are lower than those of commercial Pd balck, evincing their better anti-poisoning performance.
