Abstract:Inspired by the heterogeneous architectures of biological composites, mimicking the hierarchical structure of nacre is a powerful strategy to construct high-performance materials. This paper presents a lightweight and nacre-like hierarchical paper which was fabricated via lanthanide ion coordination. Sodium alginate (SA) biopolymers and lanthanide ions (Nd3+, Gd3+, Ce3+ and Yb3+) were used as ideal building blocks and connection points, respectively. SA biopolymers and lanthanide ions rapidly self-assembled into an aligned hydrogel. The synthesized hydrogel was subsequently dried to form layered alginate-based papers. The formation mechanism of the layered paper was investigated and demonstrated that lanthanide ion coordination can produce the hierarchical structure. The as-prepared layered SA-Nd(III) nanopaper exhibited a high strength of 124.2 +/- 5.2 MPa, toughness of 8.2 +/- 0.4 MJ m(-3), and Young's modulus of 5.2 +/- 0.2 GPa, as well as excellent resistance to solvents. Owing to their outstanding mechanical properties and easy and fast fabrication, the layered SA-Nd(III) papers demonstrated a potential application in the fields of biomaterials. This new strategy based on lanthanide ion coordination, can also be used to construct integrated, high-performance, and biopolymer materials.

Abstract:Artificial nacre-like inorganic-organic hybrid films are fabricated by a facile evaporation-induced self-assembly method using graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets as rigid bricks and a natural polysaccharide of sodium alginate (SA) as soft mortar. To further improve tensile mechanical properties of the GO/SA films, Ca2+ is utilized as a substitute for the most widely used glutaraldehyde to crosslink the films. Owing to the high chelation affinity for metal ions, the Ca2+ modified (Ca-GO/SA) films show higher tensile mechanical properties than those of the original samples. Water uptake in the Ca-GO/SA film is greatly decreased and water stability is improved by the introduction of Ca2+. The Ca-GO/SA films exhibit water-triggered shape recovery behavior. The films show two-way shape memory effect and possess two original shapes, which can be reversibly transformed by immersion in water and removal of the absorbed moisture. This advanced hybrid film will broaden the applications for biomimetic materials and shows potential for applications in the fields of water-sensitive actuators and sensors.
Synthesis and characterizations of alginate-α-tricalcium phosphate microparticle hybrid film with flexibility and high mechanical property as a biomaterial

Abstract:A biocompatible hybrid film has been fabricated using alginate (Alg), α-tricalcium phosphate (α-TCP) microparticle and calcium chloride through ionic crosslinking as a biomaterial. The 'screeding method' (like a concrete finishing process) has been employed to develop the Alg-α-TCP film. For this method, the Alg/α-TCP blend has been prepared using an ultra-sonicator and then put on a glass slide. After that, the excess volume of blend has been cut off by skidding another slide along with the surface of the blend to achieve proper grade and flatness. The mechanical strength and flexibility of the film (Alg-α-TCP) has been controlled by changing its compositions. The crosslinking phenomenon has been confirmed by attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), x-ray diffraction and thermogravimetric analyses. The ATR-FTIR and 13C NMR analysis results suggest that carboxylate groups of the alginate are ionically cross-linked with Ca2+ ions, while the α-TCP particles reside in the network by physical interaction. The micro-fatigue test results imply high tensile strength (up to 257 MPa) and flexibility (up to 13% elongation) of the Alg-α-TCP hybrid films. The SEM analysis suggests the α-TCP particles are homogeneously distributed on the surface of Alg-α-TCP films, whereas cross-sectional images confirmed the presence of α-TCP in the cross-linked network. TGA results demonstrated that thermal stability of the hybrid film was enhanced due to ionic crosslinking and interfacial interaction between alginate and α-TCP. The incorporation of α-TCP particles diminished the swelling ratio of the hybrid film. The in vitro bone cell (MC3T3) culture and cytotoxicity tests showed that the hybrid film is biocompatible. The hybrid film releases bovine serum albumin and dimethyloxaloylglycine in a controlled way at pH 7 and 7.4, and 37 °C. Overall, the biocompatible Alg-α-TCP hybrid film with excellent mechanical strength and flexibility could be applied as an interfacial film in tissue engineering.

Abstract:In this paper, we described the fabrication of hybrid nanocomposite by bottom-up alternating preparation of organic and inorganic layers, toward the mimicking biomineralization process of natural nacre. The organic layers are layer-by-layer (LBL) polymer thin films of diazo-resins (DAR) and poly(acrylic acid) (PAA), with reactive DAR for cross-linking the thin films and PAA for providing a surface for facilitating the biomineralization. The inorganic layers are CaCO3 strata, which were prepared via the CO2 diffusion method. Scanning electron microscopy observations show that the nanocomposite fabricated in this way has the alternate organic-inorganic multilayered structure, similar to the natural nacre's brick-and-mortar structure. The thicknesses of CaCO3 strata can be controlled by selecting the diffusion time of CO2. Moreover, the thickness and content of organic matrixes may be adjusted by controlling the layer number of LBL polymer thin films. TGA analysis reveals that the content of organic composite is about 6.9%, which is close to the content of organic matrix in the natural nacre. This study represents an efficient and controllable way for fabrication of artificial nacre.

Abstract:We report a dual ionic cross-linking approach for the preparation of double-network hydrogels with robustness, high strength, and toughness, sodium alginate/poly(acrylamide-co-acrylic acid)/Fe3+ (SA/P(AAm-co-AAc)/Fe3+), in a facile "one-step" dual ionic cross-linking method. We take advantage of the abundant carboxyl groups on alginate molecules and the copolymer chains and their high coordination capacity with multivalent metal ions to obtain hydrogels with high strength and toughness. The optimal SA/P(AAm-co-AAc)/Fe3+ (SA 2 wt % and AAc S mol %) hydrogels showed a remarkable mechanical performance with 3.24 MPa tensile strength and 1228% strain, both of which remained stable with 76% water content and were highly swelling resistant in an aqueous environment. The hydrogels possessed high fatigue resistance, self recovery, pH-triggered healing capability, shape memory, and reversible gel sol transition facilitated by pH regulation. Moreover, they show three-dimensional (3D) printing processability by properly adjusting the solution viscosity. The approach may provide a convenient way of obtaining hydrogels having high strength and toughness with a number of desirable properties for a broad range of biomedical applications.

Abstract:Layered double hydroxide (LDH) films were synthesized in situ on anodic alumina/aluminium (AAO/Al). Glucose oxidase (GOD) and L-ascorbic acid (vitamin C, VC) were intercalated respectively into the in-situ grown LDH films by anion-exchange in aqueous solutions. Dodecylsulfate (SDS) was used to expand the lamellar structure before GOD intercalation into the LDH film. The resulting products were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), x-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA). The results showed that VC and GOD were successfully intercalated into the in-situ synthesized LDH film. These biomolecules loaded LDH films could have potential applications in electrode modification, safe storage and effective delivery of bioactive compounds.

Abstract:A polyionic multilayer film was fabricated by layer-by-layer (LbL) sequential deposition followed by cross-linking under mild conditions on a substrate surface to inhibit marine fouling. A novel polyanion, featuring methyl ester groups for an easy cross-linking was used as a generic solution for stabilization of LbL films in a harsh environment. Covalent cross-linking was confirmed by FTIR and XPS spectroscopy. AFM was used to observe film morphology and its variation because of cross-linking, as well as to measure the thickness of the LbL films. Cross-linking improved the stability of the LbL film when it was immersed in artificial seawater, natural seawater, and in a polar organic solvent (DMSO). No changes in the thickness and topography of the film were observed in these media. The LbL films prevented settlement of Amphibalanus amphitrite barnacle cyprids and reduced adhesion of the benthic diatom Amphora coffeaeformis. Assay results indicated that the cross-linking process did not weaken the antifouling effect of LbL films. The high stability and low degree of fouling make these coatings potentially promising candidates in marine applications.

Abstract:Nacre and other biological composites are important inspirations for the design and fabrication of multifunctional composite materials. Transparent, strong, and flexible hybrid films of aminoclays (AC) and carboxylated cellulose nanofibrils (CNF) with a nacre‐like microstructure at AC contents up to 60 wt% are prepared. The high transmittance of visible light is attributed to the high homogeneity of the hybrid films and to the relatively small refractive index contrast between the CNF‐based matrix and synthetic AC. The strength and strain to failure of the hybrids are significantly higher than biogenic nacre and other nacre‐mimicking nanocellulose‐based materials, e.g., montmorillonite‐CNF and graphene oxide‐CNF composite films. The excellent mechanical properties are related to the ionic bonds between the negatively charged carboxylic groups on the CNF and the positively charged amine groups on the AC nanoparticles. This work illustrates the significance of tailoring the interactions between small clay particles and biopolymers in multifunctional materials with potential applications as printable barrier coatings and substrates for optoelectronics.

Abstract:The aim of this investigation is to obtain a polymer-based hybrid material with biodegradability, biocompatibility, and good mechanical properties and this object was realized via, in-situ introduction of the unmodified calcium carbonate (CaCO3) into a poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA) matrix. As verified by the measurements from scanning electron microscopy (SEM), optical microscopy, dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), the hybrid films which possesses a uniform dispersion of calcium carbonate CaCO3 in nano-meter scale, mechanically robustness and thermal stability could be fabricated by a mineralization-alike process. For example, the storage modulus increases from 441 MPa of neat PLLA to 1034 MPa of hybrid film containing 2% (w/w) CaCO3. Adhesive Bioactive Coatings Inspired by Sea Life

Abstract:Inspired by nature, in particular by the marine mussels adhesive proteins (MAPs) and by the tough brick-and-mortar nacre-like structure, novel multilayered films are prepared in the present work. Organic-inorganic multilayered films, with an architecture similar to nacre based on bioactive glass nanoparticles (BG), chitosan, and hyaluronic acid modified with catechol groups, which are the main components responsible for the outstanding adhesion in MAPs, are developed for the first time. The biomimetic conjugate is prepared by carbodiimide chemistry and analyzed by ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometry. The buildup of the multilayered films is monitored with a quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring, and their topography is characterized by atomic force microscopy. The mechanical properties reveal that the films containing catechol groups and BG present an enhanced adhesion. Moreover, the bioactivity of the films upon immersion in a simulated body fluid solution is evaluated by scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction. It was found that the constructed films promote the formation of bonelike apatite in vitro. Such multifunctional mussel inspired LbL films, which combine enhanced adhesion and bioactivity, could be potentially used as coatings of a variety of implants for orthopedic applications.

Abstract:An advanced poly(lactic acid)‐assisted exfoliation and dispersion method has been developed to prepare the poly(lactic acid) coated mica nanosheets. By introducing the sheer force assembly, a nacre‐inspired nanocomposite film with the "brick and mortar" structure is constructed with the high strength, excellent UV‐shielding performance, and barrier properties, which has great application potential in the field of packaging materials. Developing biodegradable materials such as poly(lactic acid) (PLA) is a promising strategy to reduce the reliance on non‐degradable plastics and the accumulation of those wastes. However, the fabrication of high‐performance biodegradable films which integrate excellent mechanical and barrier properties remains a major challenge. To address this problem, the "brick and mortar" structure, one of the most effective biomimetic models, is introduced to improve the comprehensive properties of materials. Here, a PLA‐assisted exfoliation and dispersion method to prepare the PLA coated mica nanosheets (Nano‐mica/PLA) from a natural mineral phlogopite is presented. By introducing the sheer force assembly, a kind of nacre‐inspired nanocomposite film with the "brick and mortar" structure can be fabricated. Such a nacre‐inspired nanocomposite film shows excellent mechanical properties, UV‐shielding, and gas barrier properties. The overall performance of the nacre‐inspired nanocomposite film is superior to commercial plastic films, which will allow it possible to break a path for practical applications of PLA in the field of packaging.

Abstract:The simple LBL technique was introduced to fabricate green nacre-like chatosan/montmorillonite (CHI/MMT) films. The results of SEM and XRD analysis demonstrate that the produced CHI/MMT composites films stacked densely together to bring out well-defined nacre-like brick-mortar structure. The nanoindentation technique is used to characterize the mechanical properties of the layered nanocomposite films, which show enhanced mechanical modulus (up to ∼6.64 GPa) compared with the pure chitosan.

Fabrication, characterisation, and application of green crosslinked sodium alginate hydrogel films by natural crab-shell powders to achieve drug sustained release

Abstract:In this study, natural crab-shell particles (CSP) and deacetylated crab-shell particles (dCSP) were used as crosslinking agents at the present of glucolactone to obtain high strength mono-crosslinked and bi-crosslinked sodium alginate (NaAlg) hydrogel films, respectively. The results indicated that the CSP in the system could occur Ca 2+ crosslinking, and the addition of dCSP could help to form both Ca 2+ crosslinking and polyelectrolytes interactions with NaAlg. The remaining unreacted CaCO 3 could enhance the thermal stability of the films due to thigh thermally stable CaCO 3 . The surface hydrophobicity, gel properties, mechanical strength and thermal stabilities of those bi-crosslinked NaAlg hydrogel films were better than those of neat NaAlg film and mono-crosslinked NaAlg hydrogel films, which overcome the inferior thermo-mechanical properties for traditional hydrogel films. In addition, the releasing time of those prepared hydrogel films for diclofenac sodium was higher than 36 h, which illustrated sustained drug releasing activity. The CSP modified NaAlg hydrogel film with 0.5% GDL content exhibited the highest cumulative release amount. The proposed approach is a promising green crosslinking technique to develop high performance NaAlg hydrogel films that can realize active ingredients and drugs sustained release in food packaging and medical wound dressing areas.
Fabrication of High-Performance Poly(Vinyl Alcohol)/Mgal-Layered Double Hydroxide Nanocomposites

Abstract:High-performance poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/MgAl-layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanocomposite films were fabricated by directly,dispersing PVA particles into LDH aqueous suspension. Compared with the simple mixing of PVA dispersion with LDH suspension, the method described in this paper enabled uniform dispersion of LDH nanoplatelets in PVA matrix based on scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy observations. Exfoliated structures of LDH nanoplatelets were observed in the LDH content (Phi(LDH)) of 1.0 wt%. Thus, the corresponding PVA/LDH nanocomposite. films exhibited mechanical properties that are extremely superior to those of neat PVA films. A simple model was proposed to describe the interaction mechanism during dispersion and the ultimate morphology of PVA/LDH nanocomposites with various LDH contents. The lowest hydration number of PVA/LDH suspension with Phi(LDH) = 1.0 wt% indicated the strongest interaction between PVA chains and LDH nanoplatelets. The PVA/LDH nanocomposite films also exhibited high transparency and water resistance, which could be potentially used in the packaging industry. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Artificial Nacre-based Chitosan/Graphene Oxide-Mg Hydrogel with Significant Mechanical Strength and Shape Memory Effect

Abstract:Considerable attention has been drawn for fabricating novel systems imitating natural structures, but progress remains slow in the practical applications. In this direction, hydrogel films with a nacre-like structure based on Chitosan (CS) and Graphene Oxide (GO) have been synthesized with metal ion crosslinking. Several characterization techniques were utilized for establishing the successful synthesis and optimization of the hydrogel films. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy distinctly confirms Mg 2+ ion coordination with the layers of GO. SEM images depict the nacre-like layered structure of the metal ion crosslinked hydrogels. Enhanced thermal properties observed is due to the metal ion crosslinking. The pH-responsive behavior of the films is revealed by the swelling study performed for the hydrogels in basic, water, and acidic media. Incorporation of metal ion inside the gel film has rendered improved mechanical properties to the film. Mimicking the strength of natural costal cartilage, the elongation at break and tensile strength of the metal ion modified hydrogel films are found to be 2.51% and 38.0 MPa, respectively. The hydrogel films are found to have 84% increase in tensile strength and 83% increase in Young's modulus. The gel films exhibit remarkable shape memory behavior at around 25°C in alcoholic solutions.

Abstract:Layered double hydroxide (LDH) offer great potentialities to design functional coatings with customizable properties by exploiting their anion exchange properties. We investigated the anion exchange properties and expansion capacity of the interlayer space relating to the starting film morphology. ZnAl LDH coatings of different thicknesses and morphologies were first obtained by an in situ method using Al-based substrates. When the anion to intercalate is relatively bigger than the starting nitrates, the intercalation may be constrained by the initial LDH particle size and density composing the film. After optimising the morphology, the intercalation of three functional anions with potential antimicrobial properties was successfully achieved with an expansion of the interlayer space up to 150 % while holding the coating integrity. The release of the guest anion was studied by immersion in physiological saline solution. Finally, the possibility to regenerate the coating was demonstrated supporting the potential of these hybrid coatings for applications.

In this work, ZnAl-LDH films were prepared on aluminium (Al) plates by a hydrothermal technique using zinc nitrate solution as the precursors. ZnAl-LDHs films were characterized by SEM, EDX, XRD and FT-IR. The SEM analysis revealed that the ZnAl-LDH films with hierarchical nanoarchitectures on the surface of Al plates. EDX mapping and elemental analysis also showed that Zn, Al, and O dispersed uniformly on the aluminium substrates. XRD results were used to confirm the presence of ZnAl-LDH films as they appeared purely with the typical (003) and (006) peaks of LDH diffraction. The characteristic bands of bending vibrations due to the intercalating water, stretching vibration due to the overlapping signal of carbonate anion and nitrate anion were measured by FT-IR spectroscopy. The brucite structure also exhibited the OH-stretching vibration as well as the ZnO lattice vibration in the spectra. These ZnAl-LDH forms were evaluated for their removal performance against orange II dye solutions.

Ultrathin Hybrid Films of Polyoxohydroxy Clusters and Proteins: Layer-By-Layer Assembly and Their Optical and Mechanical Properties

Abstract:The hierarchical assembly of inorganic and organic building blocks is an efficient strategy to produce high-performance materials which has been demonstrated in various biomaterials. Here, we report a layer-by-layer (LBL) assembly method to fabricate ultrathin hybrid films from nanometer-scale ionic clusters and proteins. Two types of cationic clusters (hydrolyzed aluminum clusters and zirconium-glycine clusters) were assembled with negatively charged bovine serum albumin (BSA) protein to form high-quality hybrid films, due to their strong electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bonding. The obtained hybrid films were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), UV-vis, Raman spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results demonstrated that the cluster-protein hybrid films exhibited structural homogeneity, relative transparency, and bright blue fluorescence. More importantly, these hybrid films displayed up to a 70% increase in hardness and up to a 100% increase in reduced Young's modulus compared to the pure BSA film. These hybrid cluster-protein films could be potentially used as biomedical coatings in the future because of their good transparency and excellent mechanical properties.
