Abstract:The energy paradigms in many countries (e.g. Germany and Denmark) have experienced a significant change from fossil-based resources to clean renewables (e.g. wind turbines and photovoltaics) in the past few decades. The scenario of highly penetrated renewables is going to be further enhanced – Denmark expects to be 100 % fossil-free by 2050. Consequently, it is required that the production, distribution and use of the energy should be as technologically efficient as possible and incentives to save energy at the end-user should also be strengthened. In order to realize the transition smoothly and effectively, energy conversion systems, currently based on power electronics technology, will again play an essential role in this energy paradigm shift. Using highly efficient power electronics in power generation, power transmission/distribution and end-user application, together with advanced control solutions, can pave the way for renewable energies. In light of this, some of the most emerging renewable energies, e.g. wind energy and photovoltaic, which by means of power electronics are changing character as a major part in the electricity generation, are explored in this paper. Issues like technology development, implementation, power converter technologies, control of the systems, and synchronization are addressed. Special focuses are paid on the future trends in power electronics for those systems like how to lower the cost of energy and to develop emerging power devices and better reliability tool.

Abstract:Three billion people around the world live in severe energy poverty, including 1.1 billion who live completely off-grid. Providing affordable energy access to them can dramatically impact their living standard, health, education, productivity, and ability to be a part of modern society. In developing economies, the utilization of energy is also limited to some extent. Many programs and initiatives (e.g., the IEEE Empower a Billion Lives and the IEEE Smart Village) have been doing stellar work in tackling energy poverty in developing economies. However, much remains to be done to crowdsource relevant innovation to accelerate the deployment of energy access solutions in the affected areas, including the developing economies. According to the previous programs and initiatives, it has been identified that power electronics is one of the key technologies to address real-life issues in energy access and utilization, water supply, rural transportation, etc., for developing economies. In this context, it calls for innovative and scalable solutions that should be for emerging applications of power electronics with an emphasis on technical innovation and business viability to rapidly and sustainably scale to a wide range of customers in developing economies. Hence, we organized this Special Issue on <italic xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">Emerging Applications of Power Electronics in Developing Economies</i> , aiming to bring together researchers, experts, policy makers, and stakeholders to tackle energy poverty issues in developing economies.

Optimum Design of an Extended Range Generator for EVs Based on Taguchi Method

Abstract:In this paper, a description and operating principles of a novel hybrid excited synchronous generator are presented for EVs. The excitation source is produced by two permanent magnets of different sizes and field windings. The latter can regulate the magnetic density of air gap and then adjust the output DC voltage and current. The advantage is to match the engine output power with the battery charging characteristics. In addition, several factors are discussed to achieve an optimum output power for an extended range of mileage. Arrangements of armature windings and magnetic poles are investigated for an optimum no-load voltage. The excitation sources including excitation windings and sizes of magnets are calculated according to the excitation voltage and magnetomotive force demand. Taguchi optimized method is adopted to investigate the size of magnets and number of winding turns for the optimum output power. Moreover, electromagnetic finite element analysis(FEA) and thermal analysis of a 30kW extended range synchronous generator are given to verify the design.

Abstract:The second IEEE Power Electronics Society (PELS) Students Symposium on Power Electronics (SSPEL)—Asia 2024 was successfully held in Hangzhou, China, from 13 to 14 January 2024 with both in-person and virtual attendees. The event was organized through the joint efforts of the IEEE PELS Membership Committee—China (MCC), PELS Zhejiang/Jiangsu/Anhui Chapter, and PELS Zhejiang University Student Branch Chapter (SBC), with technical co-sponsorship of the China Power Supply Society (CPSS), as well as seven SBCs and the IEEE PELS Students and Young Professional (S&YP) Committee. The Symposium attracted 478 students and young professionals from seven countries, including, but not limited to, China, Singapore, and South Korea ( Figure 1 ).

Mechatronics-Driven Musical Expressivity for Robotic Percussionists

Abstract:Musical expressivity is an important aspect of musical performance for humans as well as robotic musicians. We present a novel mechatronics-driven implementation of Brushless Direct Current (BLDC) motors in a robotic marimba player, named Shimon, designed to improve speed, dynamic range (loudness), and ultimately perceived musical expressivity in comparison to state-of-the-art robotic percussionist actuators. In an objective test of dynamic range, we find that our implementation provides wider and more consistent dynamic range response in comparison with solenoid-based robotic percussionists. Our implementation also outperforms both solenoid and human marimba players in striking speed. In a subjective listening test measuring musical expressivity, our system performs significantly better than a solenoid-based system and is statistically indistinguishable from human performers.

Abstract:This paper summarizes the main results and contributions of the MagNet Challenge 2023, an open-source research initiative for data-driven modeling of power magnetic materials. The MagNet Challenge has (1) advanced the stateof-the-art in power magnetics modeling; (2) set up examples for fostering an open-source and transparent research community; (3) developed useful guidelines and practical rules for conducting data-driven research in power electronics; and (4) provided a fair performance benchmark leading to insights on the most promising future research directions. The competition yielded a collection of publicly disclosed software algorithms and tools designed to capture the distinct loss characteristics of power magnetic materials, which are mostly open-sourced. We have attempted to bridge power electronics domain knowledge with state-of-the-art advancements in artificial intelligence, machine learning, pattern recognition, and signal processing. The MagNet Challenge has greatly improved the accuracy and reduced the size of data-driven power magnetic material models. The models and tools created for various materials were meticulously documented and shared within the broader power electronics community.

Abstract:Li-ion batteries and fuel cells play essential roles in electrifying transportation. Central to the electrochemical systems is the electrode-electrolyte interface, where (electro)chemical surface reactions or intercalation occur, and its thermodynamic and kinetic properties determine the energy density, power density, and lifetime of the electrochemical devices. However, the molecular structures at the electrical double layer and reaction mechanisms remain poorly understood, hindering the rational material design for more efficient electrochemical devices. This talk focuses on the mechanisms of (electro)chemical reactions and charges transfer kinetics at the electrode-electrolyte interface, providing design principles based on non-covalent interactions in electrolytes. First, an in situ Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) method was developed for Li-ion batteries, which revealed unique evidence for dehydrogenation of carbonate electrolytes on Ni-rich lithium nickel, manganese and cobalt oxides (NMC), accounting for interface impedance build-up and battery capacity fading. Based on the proposed mechanism, strategies on suppressing electrode and electrolyte reactivity were demonstrated to improve battery cycling. Next, the kinetic mechanism for ion intercalation at the electrode-electrolyte interface will be discussed. Li-ion concentration-dependent intercalation kinetics was demonstrated from charge-adjusted electrochemical experiments and fit into a coupled ion-electron transfer mechanism, which governed the current-dependent maximum capacity and power density of intercalation batteries. Finally, for electrocatalytic reactions central to fuel cell technologies, we demonstrated tuning interfacial hydrogen bonding through protic ionic liquids with different acid dissociation constants and organic solvents with different donor numbers to tailor oxygen-reduction reaction (ORR) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Strengthening hydrogen bonding between ORR products and ionic liquids, or between interfacial water molecules facilitated proton-coupled electron transfer kinetics, revealed by in situ surface-enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The study can pave the way for the electrolyte and electrode design of electrochemical storage devices with improved energy and power density and cycle life.

Abstract:The hydraulic accumulator has the advantages of high power density, fast response, stable operation and high cost performance. However, compared with the electric energy storage method, the hydraulic accumulator has low energy density and large pressure fluctuation while absorbing and discharging energy, which severely limits its application in hydraulic excavators. To improve the potential energy loss of the boom during the lowering process, an electro-hydraulic drive and energy recovery system for excavator booms (EHDR-EEB) based on a battery and accumulator is proposed. As a result, a simulation model of the electro-hydraulic drive and energy management strategy of a 1.6 t pure electric hydraulic excavator is built to investigate the energy regeneration and utilization. The simulation outcomes show that the potential energy recovery rate is as high as 92%. This research on EHDR-EEB makes a significant contribution to the economic improvement of electric hydraulic excavators.
