Abstract:TiO2 modified Al2O3 binary oxide was prepared by a wet-impregnation method and used as the support for ruthenium catalyst. The catalytic performance of Ru/TiO2–Al2O3 catalyst in CO2 methanation reaction was investigated. Compared with Ru/Al2O3 catalyst, the Ru/TiO2–Al2O3 catalytic system exhibited a much higher activity in CO2 methanation reaction. The reaction rate over Ru/TiO2–Al2O3 was 0.59mol CO2·(g Ru)−1·h−1, 3.1 times higher than that on Ru/Al2O3 [0.19mol CO2·(g Ru)−1·h−1]. The effect of TiO2 content and TiO2–Al2O3 calcination temperature on catalytic performance was addressed. The corresponding structures of each catalyst were characterized by means of H2-TPR, XRD, and TEM. Results indicated that the averaged particle size of the Ru on TiO2–Al2O3 support is 2.8nm, smaller than that on Al2O3 support of 4.3nm. Therefore, we conclude that the improved activity over Ru/TiO2–Al2O3 catalyst is originated from the smaller particle size of ruthenium resulting from a strong interaction between Ru and the rutile-TiO2 support, which hindered the aggregation of Ru nano-particles.
Regulating the Microenvironments and the D-Band Center of Hierarchical Nimos/Ts-1 Catalyst by Zro2 to Enhance the Hydrodesulfurization Performance of Dibenzothiophene

Abstract:The microenvironments including the surface hydroxyls, the oxygen vacancies, and the d-band center of hierarchical TS-1 zeolite pickled by hydrochloric acid were regulated by ZrO2, the effect of ZrO2 on the physicochemical properties and the catalytic performances of the corresponding NiMoS supported catalysts were studied. The experimental and theoretical calculation results show that the d-band center, the surface hydroxyl groups, and the oxygen vacancies were regulated after incorporation of ZrO2. Resulting in the modulated acidity of the support and the metal support interaction of the catalysts, further promoting the formation of type-II NiMoS active phases. The catalytic performance evaluations show that catalyst NiMo/1-ZAT exhibits the superior HDS performance, kinetic study further demonstrated that the enhanced catalytic activity was mainly contributed by the improved direct desulfurization activity generated from the moderate support acidity, suitable MSI, highest sulfidation degrees, most type-II NiMoS active phase and highest activity of individual active sites.
Enhanced CO2 Methanation Activity of Ni/Anatase Catalyst by Tuning Strong Metal–Support Interactions

Abstract:Strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) has been widely recognized for platinum-group metals on reducible oxide supports. Herein we report that the catalytic activity of Ni catalyst in CO2 methanation is significantly suppressed over conventional anatase (a-TiO2) support due to the SMSI-induced formation of a titania overlayer around the Ni nanoparticles. Furthermore, CO is the only product . In contrast, the NH3-treatment and H-2-treatment of the a-TiO2 support enhance remarkably the activity of Ni, i.e., CO2 conversion increases by 1 order of magnitude and CO2 is hydrogenated almost exclusively to CH4. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), H-2 and CO chemisorption, and low temperature electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) reveal that the enhanced CO2 methanation activity may be related with the Ti3+ species in the bulk that are generated by reduction treatment, which likely have altered the SMSI between Ni and a-TiO2 support. This simple reduction treatment approach may be applicable to modulate the SMSI of other reducible oxide-supported metal catalysts.

Abstract:Nitrogen doping has been proved to be an effective way to modify the properties of graphene and other carbon materials. Herein, we explore a composite with nitrogen doped carbon overlayers wrapping SiC substrate as a support for Ni (Ni/CN-SiC) and evaluate its effects on the methanation activity. The results show that both the activity and stability of Ni are enhanced. Characterization with STEM, XRD, XPS, Raman and H2-TPR indicates that nitrogen doping generates more defects in the carbon overlayers, which benefit the dispersion of Ni. Furthermore, the reduction of Ni is facilitated.

Abstract:Nanostructured titanium dioxides were synthesized via various post-treatments of titanate nanofibers obtained from titanium precursors by hydrothermal reactions. The microstructures of TiO2 and supported Ru/TiO2 catalysts were characterized with X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray analysis, and nitrogen adsorption isotherms. The phase structure, particle size, morphology, and specific surface area were determined. The supported Ru catalysts were applied for the selective methanation of CO in a hydrogen-rich stream. The results indicated that the Ru catalyst supported on rutile and TiO2-B exhibited higher catalytic performance than the counterpart supported on anatase, which suggested the distinct interaction between Ru nanoparticles and TiO2 resulting from different crystalline phases and morphology.
Structural effect of Ni/TiO2 on CO methanation: improved activity and enhanced stability

Abstract:CO methanation over a supported Ni catalyst has attracted increasing attention for its applications in synthetic natural gas production, CO removal for ammonia synthesis and fuel cells, among others. However, the deactivation of the Ni catalyst caused by sintering and carbon deposition hinders further application of the Ni catalyst. The activity of Ni catalysts needs further improvement as well. In this work, the structural effect of the Ni/TiO2 catalyst on CO methanation was investigated. A plasma decomposition, initiated at room temperature and operated around 150 °C, of the nickel precursor was applied to prepare the catalyst. Compared to the thermally decomposed Ni/TiO2 catalyst, the plasma-decomposed catalyst shows improved activity with enhanced stability. The catalyst characterization shows that the plasma-decomposed Ni/TiO2 catalyst possesses smaller Ni particle size and higher Ni dispersion, resulting in improved coke resistance and enhanced anti-sintering ability for CO methanation. The present study confirms that a catalyst with good activity for CO methanation possesses good activity for CO2 methanation as well, if the CO2 methanation takes the CO methanation pathway.
Study on the Influence of Ni Modifying on Phase Transformation and Photocatalytic Activity of Tio2

Abstract:The Ni-modified TiO2 was synthesized using two methods including co-precipitation (Ni doped TiO2, Ni-TiO2) and wet impregnation (Ni loaded TiO2, Ni/TiO2). The surface and bulk crystalline phases of Ni-modified TiO2 were investigated by using X-ray diffractometry (XRD), UV Raman spectroscopy, TEM, and SEM. It is observed that Ni doping can promote the phase transition and grain size growth of TiO2. Moreover, the propagation of the rutile phase from the bulk into the surface region of TiO2 is increased when the Ni doping amount reaches up to 3%. However, in Ni/TiO2, it is found out that the surface and bulk phase transformation of TiO2 can be inhibited after impregnation of 1% of Ni on the TiO2. Compared with the co-precipitation method, Ni species may be more enriched in the surface of the Ni/TiO2 sample upon adoption of the impregnation method, and the direct contact of anatase particles of TiO2 is avoided. As a consequence, the phase transition in the surface and bulk region of TiO2 can be effectively inhibited by Ni loading. Additionally, the activity of the photocatalytic degradation of RhB on the 3Ni-TiO2-600 degrees C sample is higher than that on the 3 Ni/TiO2-600 degrees C sample. The phase junction formed between anatase and rutile in the surface region of 3Ni-TiO2-600 degrees C may the main reason for its high photocatalytic activity.

Abstract:CO2 methanation with Sabatier reaction is an effective way to convert the greenhouse gases into valuable industrial product. In this work, we designed and developed a stable and effective Co modified NiTiO3 catalyst. The best catalyst exhibits high CO2 conversion (86 %) and high methane selectivity (nearly 100 %), which can work continuously for 16 h without significant deactivation at 350 ℃. As evidenced by various characterization methods, like XPS, H2-TPD and CO2-TPR, Co doping is found to influence the electron distribution of the catalyst, change the size of metal particle and the interaction of metal and support, which in turn has positive impact on methanation performance, while NiTiO3 support improves the ability to capture CO2 because of its abundant basic oxide and oxygen vacancies after reduction. Cobalt modification proved to be a potential way to construct Ti-O-Ni interfacial structure, and increase the hydrogen activation sites and carbon dioxide activation site simultaneously. This work may provide useful information for designing and optimizing multi-metal modified catalyst for CO2 methanation.

Abstract:The construction of efficient catalysts is still the bottleneck for the industrialization of CO2 methanation. Herein, a nitrogen (N)-doping strategy was developed to boost both activity and selectivity of the Ni/TiO2 catalyst, wherein N-doped TiO2 was prepared by a mild sol–gel method and employed as the support for Ni catalysts. In detail, CO2 conversion at 350 °C over the Ni/TiO2 and Ni/N10-TiO2 catalysts was 9.6 and 41.7%, respectively. CH4 selectivity at 400 °C over the Ni/TiO2 and Ni/N10-TiO2 catalysts was 44.1 and 84.6%, respectively. In comparison to the undoped Ni/TiO2 catalyst, the Ni/N10-TiO2 catalyst had a smaller Ni size and enriched basic sites, leading to enhanced activity. The introduction of N dopants transformed TiO2 phases from anatase into rutile and induced intimate contact between Ni nanoparticles and rutile TiO2, resulting in improved CH4 selectivity. Substituted, interstitial, and oxidized N species were detected on the surface of N-doped Ni/TiO2 catalysts, among which substituted N was identified as the most critical species. The present work provides a facile and feasible strategy to promote both activity and selectivity of supported catalysts in CO2 hydrogenation.

Abstract:Transforming CO2 into valuable chemicals and fuels via hydrogenation receives excellent concern, considering the severe environmental problems caused by CO2 emissions. However, the development of catalytic materials for low-temperature CO2 hydrogenation remains challenging. Herein, we construct a nanotube (NT) catalyst system, where Ru is confined in TiO2 nanotubes (Ru@TiO2NTs), which are further modified by Ni photodeposition (Ru@TiO2NTs-Ni). This system aims to enhance CO2 methanation by modulating the confinement effect. Ru@TiO2NTs-Ni exhibits better low-temperature catalytic activity than Ru@TiO2NTs. Approximately 86 % CO2 conversion and 100 % CH4 selectivity are achieved at 220 degrees C, and no decrease in catalyst activity is observed in 110 h. The interactions between Ni, Ru, and TiO2 NTs are investigated in depth using characterization techniques, such as extended X-ray absorption fine structure and in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS). The results indicate that part of Ni is embedded in the surface lattice of the TiO2 NTs, resulting in a large amount of Ni3+. The presence of Ni3+ causes oxygen vacancies on the surface of the nanotube and enhances the electron-deficient state inside the nanotube, thereby improving the performance of low-temperature CO2 methanation. In situ DRIFTS results indicate that the presence of Ni considerably enhances the ability of Ru to dissociate CO2 and improves CO2 methanation performance at low temperatures. This study advances the understanding of the confinement effect of TiO2 NTs and presents an approach to design efficient catalysts by modifying their electronic state, thereby providing novel insights into CO2 utilization.

One-Step Synthesis of PtNi Modified TiO 2 Nanotubes Array for Methanol Oxidation

Abstract:Highly active, stable, economic friendly electrocatalysts plays a crucial role for the commercialization of direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs). Here, PtNi bimetallic particles modified titanium dioxide nanotubes (TNTs) were fabricated by one-step electrochemical synthesis as anode catalyst for methanol oxidation reaction. By contrast, we fixed Pt on TNTs directly. The flower-like PtNi bimetallic catalysts were prepared on TNTs successfully, and bimetallic catalyst electrode exhibits high electrocatalytic activity, which can significantly promote the MOR, and durability compared with control samples. Specifically, the highest PtNi mass activities of 408 mA/mgpt for methanol oxidation, which are 4 times higher those of the Pt electrode. A further structure investigation revealed that this improvement of catalytic activity was caused by lattice compression when Ni atoms enter in Pt lattice accompanied by 1.02eV positive shift of Pt 4f7/2 binding energy in XPS measurement. Such a hybrid integrated electrode prepared by this simple, low energy and low cost method looks promising for novel nanodevices to be applied in the energy and environment field.
Pt Nanoparticles Supported on Non-Carbon Titanium Chromium Nitride Nanotubes with High Activity and Durability for Methanol Oxidation Reaction

Abstract:A hybrid titanium chromium nitride nanotube (Ti0.95Cr0.05N NT) support was prepared by a facile synthesis procedure and further used as support for Pt nanoparticles (Pt/Ti0.95Cr0.05N NTs). The catalyst was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and nitrogen absorption/desorption, which show that the Pt/Ti0.95Cr0.05N NTs are formed with homogeneous cohesively attached nitride nanotube crystals. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) reveals that the interaction between Ti0.95Cr0.05N NTs and Pt nanoparticles is enhanced due to the Cr element doping. Furthermore, the electrochemical experiments demonstrate that Ti0.95Cr0.05N NT-supported Pt catalyst exhibits enhanced catalytic activity and durability for methanol electrooxidation compared with traditional Pt/C catalyst. The experimental dates indicate that the excellent stability and durability of Pt/Ti0.95Cr0.05N NTs toward methanol electrochemical oxidation might be mainly ascribed to the synergistic effect introduced by Cr doping and the tubular nanostructures. The above results indicate that Ti0.95Cr0.05N NTs as support have a promising future in direct methanol fuel cells.
Tuning the Selectivity of Photothermal CO2 Hydrogenation Through Photo-Induced Interaction Between Ni Nanoparticles and TiO2

Abstract:Photothermal CO2 hydrogenation into value-added chemicals driven by abundant solar energy is a promising and sustainable approach for achieving carbon neutralization. Herein, we demonstrate the photo-induced interaction between Ni nanoparticles and TiO2 support (Ni@TiO2) for maneuvering the selectivity of photothermal CO2 hydrogenation. According to experimental characterizations and theoretical simulations, the formed strong metal-support interaction between Ni and TiO2 can significantly enhance the adsorption of key intermediate *CO for further hydrogenation, thus tuning the CO2 hydrogenation pathway toward CH4. Consequently, the Ni@TiO2 catalyst exhibits a CH4 production rate of 286.5 mmol gcat -1 h-1 with an 81.8% selectivity under full-spectrum solar light irradiation. Moreover, in situ experimental characterizations and theoretical calculations suggest that photothermal CO2 hydrogenation over Ni@TiO2 undergoes a stepwise hydrogenation pathway to methane. This work offers insights into a simple approach for designing efficient nonprecious metalbased CO2 methanation catalysts.
New Mechanism Insights into Methane Steam Reforming on Pt/Ni from DFT and Experimental Kinetic Study

Abstract:In this contribution, we combine density functional theory (DFT) calculations, experimental kinetic study and DFT-assisted analysis to elucidate the impact of the interface of monolayer Pt on the Ni surface on catalytic performance of steam methane reforming including carbon formation on core-shell (Ni@Pt) catalysts and compare it with Ni and Pt catalysts. We demonstrate that core-shell structured Ni@Pt significantly lowers the carbon formation without sacrificing much the activity. The DFT results demonstrate that the metal identity, core shell structure and support have significant impacts on the reaction mechanisms. The direct methane activation is energetically favorable reaction pathway on Ni, while the OH* assisted methane activation is the favorable pathway on Pt and Ni@Pt catalysts, where methane activation is the rate-determining step on all catalysts. We unambiguously reveal that the core-shell Ni@Pt catalyst modified the surface Pt electron density and shifted d-band center away from Fermi level compared to Ni(1 1 1) and Pt(1 1 1). It results in a strong basic surface OH* which actively reacts with CHx and thus enhances carbon formation resistance. Above all, Ni-core/Pt-shell particle could decouple the activity and carbon resistance to keep the activity and reduce carbon formation simultaneously in methane steam reforming. In addition, by taking into account the activation of steam on the support, the effective activation energy estimated from DFT-assisted analysis is well consistent with the experimental value on the both Ni and Ni@Pt catalysts, which could shed some light on building a bridge between experimental work and DFT-assisted kinetic study.

Abstract:The crystal plane effects played pivotal roles in the design of catalysts. In this paper, the branched Ni (Ni-BN) catalyst mainly exposed of Ni(322) surface was synthesized in the presence of H2, while Ni nanoparticle (Ni-NP) catalyst mainly exposed of Ni(111) and Ni(100) surfaces was synthesized without H2. The Ni-BN catalyst showed higher CO2 conversion and methane selectivity than the Ni-NP catalyst. DRIFTs results found that unlike the formate route for methanation over Ni-BN catalyst, the main methanation pathway over Ni-NP catalyst was CO2 direct dissociate route, which revealed that the diversity of reaction mechanisms of CO2 methanation on different crystal planes led to the disparity of catalyst activity. DFT calculation of CO2 hydrogenation reaction over various surfaces showed that the energy barriers on Ni(110) and Ni(322) surfaces were lower than that of Ni(111) and Ni(100) surfaces, which was also related to different pathways of reaction mechanism. Microkinetic analysis showed the reaction rates on Ni(110) and Ni(322) surfaces were higher than those of other surfaces, and CH4 was the main product on all calculated surfaces, while the yields of CO on Ni(111) and Ni(100) surfaces were higher. The kinetic Monte Carlo simulation further revealed that the Ni(322) surface with the stepped sites was responsible for the generation of CH4, and the simulated methane selectivity was consistent with the experimental results. The crystal plane effects of the two morphologies of Ni nanocrystals explained the reason that the reaction activity of Ni-BN catalyst was better than that of Ni-NP catalyst

Abstract:Interfaces between active metal and metal oxide in a heterogenous catalyst often play an important role in catalysis. In this work, we intentionally synthesized a series of inverse CeO2-Cr2O3/Ni model catalysts with the formation of controlled CeO2-Ni and Cr2O3-Ni interfacial structures and investigated the roles of the oxide-metal interfaces in CO2 methanation performance through excluding the normal support effect. Experimental and DFT calculation results reveal that the formate pathway tends to occur on the catalyst with only CeO2-Ni interfaces. The Cr2O3-Ni interface formed after introducing Cr oxide alters the nearby CeO2-Ni interface by electron transfer through Ni, which brings an additional reaction pathway (CO pathway) on CeO2-Cr2O3/Ni. Furthermore, it shows a relatively lower CO2 absorption energy and activation energy barrier for CO2 dissociation to CO at the Cr2O3-Ni interface, favorable for CO2 activation and further hydrogenation, thus leading to excellent low-temperature activity.

Abstract:Metal-support interaction (MSI) is recognized as an important factor affecting catalyst activity in CO2 methanation, but a feasible strategy to adjust MSI during catalyst preparation is not yet very clear. Herein, we designed a series of Mg-Al hydrotalcites calcined at different temperatures as supports for Ni-based catalysts preparation and investigated the relationship between MSI and catalytic activity. Through various characterizations, it is confirmed that the MSI can be tailored by thermal treatment resulting from phase transformation, and Ni/MAO1000 (which has strong MSI) showed the highest activity for CO2 conversion (1821 mmolCO2 mol−1 Ni min−1). Furthermore, in-situ DRIFTS experiments and DFT calculations proved that methoxy/carbonyls are key intermediates and Ni(111) is the determined crystal plane to produce CH4. This work provides an effective way to tailor the MSI of Ni-based catalysts for enhanced performance in CO2 methanation.
Effect of Mo Addition on the Performance of Ni-Based Methanation Catalysts Supported by Halloysites

Abstract:Ni-based halloysite methanation catalysts with variousMo contentswere prepared by using halloysites as supports, and it was used tocatalyze the methanation reaction. The addition of Mo can strengthenthe interaction between Ni and the halloysite, preventing the activecomponent Ni from aggregating into the larger particles during thereaction, which can improve the catalyst activity and life. At thesame time, the electron donation of the Mo atom can rise the electrondensity around the nickel atom and facilitate the dissociation ofcarbon monoxide on the Ni surface, which can improve the activityof the reaction under low temperature. Among them, the 6Mo10Ni/eHNTscatalyst has the best activity at 350 & DEG;C. The conversion of COachieves 100% and the yield of CH4 reaches 99.7%. At 300 & DEG;C, the CO conversion rate is 100%, and the CH4 yieldis 97%, which is the same as the activity of 10Ni/eHNTs without Moat 350 & DEG;C, i.e., the low temperature activity is improved withthe addition of Mo. At the same time, the addition of Mo enhancesthe anti-sintering property and resistance to the carbon depositionof the catalysts. This work shows the possibility for the industrialapplication of the methanation catalyst using halloysites as the support.
