Abstract:In this study, the amorphous-nanocrystalline dual-phase structure Fe 78 Si 13 B 9 alloy ribbons (FeSiB) were prepared by single roll stripping method. The degradation efficiency of FeSiB for direct yellow dyes (DYGR) was 83% at a water bath temperature of 35 °C, pH = 7, and without any oxidizer addition. The characterization results show that the galvanic cell structure is formed between the nanocrystals and amorphous matrix, which makes it easier for Fe 0 to lose electrons and accelerate electron transfer, thus promoting the degradation reaction. Ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS) was employed to identify the intermediates. The specific degradation pathway of DYGR by FeSiB ribbons is proposed for the first time based on these 18 intermediates. The mechanism studies show that [H] produced by FeSiB plays a special role in the degradation pathway of DYGR, and is more likely to react with electron-withdrawing group. This work provides a new idea for understanding the degradation mechanism of azo dyes by Fe-based alloys.

Abstract:Amorphous alloys are meta-stable materials with long-range disordered atomic structure, which have excellent catalytic degradation performance and are also susceptible to crystallization, but the mechanism of the effect of crystallization on their catalytic properties has not been clarified. Therefore, this paper investigates the effect of the annealing crystallization process on the microstructure of Fe-Si-B-Cu-Nb industrial amorphous ribbons and their catalytic degradation properties for acid orange 7. It is found that the catalytic degradation performance of the ribbons after annealing at 460-580 °C decreases dramatically, and its reaction rate constant is less than 0.01 min -1 . The main reason is the formation of ɑ-Fe precipitation phase in the ribbons after annealing at high temperatures and the destruction of the substable amorphous structure. These reduce the rate of hydroxyl radical formation. In contrast, the catalytic degradation performance of the 650-700 °C annealed ribbons increased significantly, which increased to 3.77 times the degradation rate of the as-cast ribbons. The decolorization of the acid orange 7 at 15 min by the annealed ribbons reached 99.22 %, which was 1.12 times higher than that of the as-cast ribbons. The improvement of the catalytic degradation performance was attributed to the primary cell effect between the crystalline phase and the metal compounds and the substitution reaction between the Cu-enriched clusters and zero-valent iron. This study reveals the mechanism of crystallization on the performance of Fe-Si-B-Cu-Nb industrial amorphous ribbons for degrading azo dyes, which provides theoretical and experimental support for the use of aged iron-based amorphous ribbons to cleanse printing and dyeing waste-water to realize the "Using alloy wastes for refreshing waste-water".

Abstract:The dye degradation capability and reusability of FeSiBNbCu amorphous ribbons are largely enhanced due to the surface activation by ball milling. The time required for degrading 50 % of acid orange 7 solution by the activated FeSiBNbCu amorphous ribbons is only 1/6 of that by the as-quenched ribbons, while the reusable times of the activated ribbons is 6 times larger than that of the as-quenched ribbons. The superior degradation capability and better reusability of the activated FeSiBNbCu amorphous ribbons come from not only the uneven topography of the ribbon surface induced by ball milling, but also the stored deformation energy, including the structural rejuvenation and the enlarged residual stress. The structural rejuvenation in the activated FeSiBNbCu amorphous ribbons is verified by heat relaxation analysis, and the increased residual stress is confirmed by the magnetic domain measurements on the ribbon surfaces. Besides, the environmental adaptability of the activated FeSiBNbCu amorphous ribbons is also investigated. The possible pathways for degradation of acid orange 7 using the activated ribbons, including azo bond cleavage and hydroxylation of benzene ring, are proposed. This work provides a new method to effectively improve the degradation performance of amorphous ribbons.
The catalytic performance of Cu46Zr47-xAl7Yx amorphous ribbons in the degradation of AO II dye wastewater

Abstract:Metallic glasses (MGs) with unique disordered atomic stacking structures exhibit excellent catalytic performance in wastewater treatment. The catalytic degradation of Orange II (AO II) aqueous solutions by four CuZr-based MG ribbons under such processing parameters as pH values, the dosage of ribbons, and temperature was investigated in this paper. The catalytic performance of the MG ribbons was characterized by using the degradation efficiency of the dye wastewater. The phase constituent, surface morphology, and chemical valence state of elements on the surface of MG ribbons before and after use were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), respectively. The results indicate that the Cu46Zr42Al7Y5 MG ribbon has the best catalytic performance among the Cu46Zr47-xAl7Yx (x = 0, 1, 3, 5) MGs in the degradation process, and the dye in the wastewater can almost be completely decolorized within 60 min under the conditions of pH = 2, the dosage of ribbons being 1.8 g/L and water bath temperature of 313 K, with the degradation efficiency and chemical oxygen demand removal being 96.05% and 51.73%, respectively. Furthermore, the Cu46Zr42Al7Y5 MG ribbon still shows superior structural stability and degradation performance after repeated use, and the corrosion pits on the MG surface promote the physicochemical reaction between the wastewater and the ribbons.

Abstract:Different from the common understanding that crystallization deteriorates the degradation capability of amorphous alloys, we show here that the Fe-based multi-phase nanocrystalline ribbons (Fe-MNRs) exhibit 3 and 17 times higher degradation rate than its amorphous counterpart and the conventional zero valent iron powders, respectively. The formation of multi-phase nanocrystals and nanoporous structure resulted from selective corrosion during degradation is responsible for the high degradation capability of Fe-MNRs. The present results suggest that suitable nano-crystallization annealing treatment could be a novel approach to enhance the degradation capability of Fe-based amorphous alloys.

Abstract:The effects of annealing temperature on the catalytic degradation capacity of Fe75P15C10 amorphous ribbons in the photo-enhanced Fenton-like reactions are studied using reactive red 195 (RR195) solution. The order of catalytic degradation capacity of the ribbons is AN722 ≥ AN662 ≥ AS ≥ AN542 ≥ AN602, the AN722 ribbon has the highest k (0.349 min−1), the lowest tη≥95% (10 min) values, and compared with AS ribbon has good reusability (9 times). Firstly, isothermal annealing is a process of metastable structural relaxation, in which the energy stored in AS ribbon is gradually released, and the high thermodynamic enthalpy and residual stress decrease, which jointly lead to the decline of the catalytic degradation capacity of the ribbons. Secondly, the precipitation of Fe3P nanocrystal/nanophase and amorphous matrix, identified by TEM, induces the formation of galvanic cells effect increase the electron donation rate in the reaction, thus restoring/improving its catalytic degradation capacity.

Abstract:Widespread and ineffective dye treatment in aquatic environment leads to serious pollution problems, threatening ecology and human health. Herein, manganese cerium bimetallic oxide cathode material (MnCeOx@GF) x @GF) was prepared by hydrothermal method combined with calcination, and the electrochemical Fenton degradation performance of a typical dye Rhodamine B (Rh B) was investigated. The results show that the degradation of Rh B by MnCeOx@GF x @GF can reach 96.5 % within 2 h in acidic environment and continue to perform effectively after 4 repeated experiments. Combined with SEM and electrochemical test results, it can be seen that the bimetallic composite oxides formed by manganese and cerium on the surface of the support can effectively enhance the catalytic activity of the material, the addition of cerium changes the morphology of manganese oxides and promotes the generation of multiple valence composite oxides of transition metals, and improves the degradation of Rh B. Based on the free radical masking experiments, hydroxyl radical (center dot OH) center dot OH) is the main active substance in the electro-Fenton degradation process. This work not only provides a way to design and manufacture cathode materials for in situ electrosynthesis of H2O2, 2 O 2 , but also provides an important reference for improving the reusability of cathodes for sustainable dye wastewater treatment.
Role of Nanocrystallites of Al-Based Glasses and H2O2 in Degradation Azo Dyes

Abstract:Al-based metallic glasses have a special atomic structure and should have a unique degradation ability in azo dye solutions. The Al88Ni9Y3 (Y3), Al85Ni9Y6 (Y6) and Al82Ni9Y9 (Y9) glassy ribbons are melt spun and used in degrading methyl orange (MO) azo dye solution with adding H2O2. With increasing cY, the as-spun ribbons have an increasing GFA (glass formability) and gradually decreased the degradation rate of MO solution. TEM (transmission electron microscopy) results show that the Y3 ribbon has nano-scale crystallites, which may form the channels to transport elements to the surface for degrading the MO solution. After adding H2O2, the degradation efficiency of Al-based glasses is improved and the Y6 ribbon has formed nano-scale crystallites embedded in the amorphous matrix and it has the largest improvement in MO solution degradation. These results indicate that forming nano-scale crystallites and adding H2O2 are effective methods to improve the degradation ability of Al-based glasses in azo dye solutions.

Stress-induced activation of the commercial Fe-based metallic glass ribbons for azo dye degradation

Abstract:Handling of massive azo dye wastewater and waste commercial Fe-based metallic glass ribbons for iron core uses separately is lavish. A win-win trade would be degrading the azo dye by the Fe-based metallic glass ribbons. However, the waste ribbons, especially those undergone heat treatments, generally show insufficient degrading activity. In this work, a general stress-induced activation strategy is proposed to improve the azo dye degradation performance of the Fe-based metallic glass ribbons via the facile and efficient rolling treatment, which is generally applicable for various alloy systems of as-cast and as-heated states. A set of in-situ degradation vs. stress experiment confirms the stress-induced activation behavior. The stress introduced by rolling treatment is responsible for the decreased activation energy that leads to increased reductivity, which results in facilitated degradation activity and diffusion-controlled mechanism. This work is of great economic and environmental importance for handling the azo dye wastewater with the massive waste Fe-based metallic glass ribbons.

Excellent dye degradation performance of FeSiBP amorphous alloys by Fenton-like process

Abstract:Amorphous alloys are being newly applied in wastewater treatment because of their unique atomic packing structure. They possess excellent degradation efficiency, stability and reusability. In this work, Fe80Si10B10 and Fe83Si5B8P4 amorphous ribbons exhibited advanced catalytic performance for the degradation of Methyl Blue (MB) and Rhodamine B (RhB) dyes, and the color removal reach nearly 100% within 11 min for both the dyes. Compared with the Fe80Si10B10 amorphous ribbon, the Fe83Si5B8P4 ribbon showed higher degradation efficiency due to its lower reaction activation energy, higher electron transfer ability and higher Fe content, and the formation of the galvanic cell between the strong Fe-P bonds and the weak Fe-B bonds. It also exhibited high stability and reusability. The degradation efficiency was improved when the appropriate concentration of H2O2 is added. As regards the pH, high degradation efficiency was observed in acidic MB solution, but it decreased as the pH increased up to pH 7. The application of the electro-Fenton-like process is discussed, which can effectively improve the degradation performance in a nearly natural solution. This study presents a high efficiency low-cost catalyst for synthetic dye degradation and expands the functional applications of Fe-based amorphous alloys.

Abstract:Fe-based metallic glasses (MGs) are among the most interesting in the area of MG materials, due to their superior properties such as high degradation capability of azo dyes. However, the ways that factors influence the degradation capability of MGs towards azo dyes are still unclear. From this reason, the effect of residual stress on degradation capability of Fe-based MG was investigated. (Fe73.5Si13.5B9Nb3Cu1)91.5Ni8.5 as-cast MG ribbons and annealed MG ribbons were prepared and subjected to degrade Orange II solutions. The as-cast ribbons completely degrade the azo dye within 60min, the ribbons annealed at 673K take 120min, although the annealed ribbons still sustain metastable glassy state. Surface morphology and magnetic domain pattern of the ribbons were characterized carefully. The results demonstrate that the inhomogeneous residual stress could contribute to high degradation capability of the as-cast MG ribbons by generating stress gradient cell and increasing active sites. Therefore, increasing residual stress can be a novel clue to enhance degradation capability of materials.
High MB Solution Degradation Efficiency of FeSiBZr Amorphous Ribbon with Surface Tunnels

Abstract:The as spun amorphous (Fe78Si9B13)99.5Zr0.5 (Zr0.5) and (Fe78Si9B13)99Zr1 (Zr1) ribbons having a Fenton-like reaction are proved to bear a good degradation performance in organic dye wastewater treatment for the first time by evaluating their degradation efficiency in methylene blue (MB) solution. Compared to the widely studied (Fe78Si9B13)100Zr0 (Zr0) amorphous ribbon for degradation, with increasing cZr (Zr atomic content), the as-spun Zr0, Zr0.5 and Zr1 amorphous ribbons have gradually increased degradation rate of MB solution. According to δc (characteristic distance) of as-spun Zr0, Zr0.5 and Zr1 ribbons, the free volume in Zr1 ribbon is higher Zr0 and Zr0.5 ribbons. In the reaction process, the Zr1 ribbon surface formed the 3D nano-porous structure with specific surface area higher than the cotton floc structure formed by Zr0 ribbon and coarse porous structure formed by Zr0.5 ribbon. The Zr1 ribbon’s high free volume and high specific surface area make its degradation rate of MB solution higher than that of Zr0 and Zr0.5 ribbons. This work not only provides a new method to remedying the organic dyes wastewater with high efficiency and low-cost, but also improves an application prospect of Fe-based glassy alloys.

Preparation, characterization and application of Fe72Cu1Co5Si9B13 metallic glass catalyst in degradation of azo dyes

Abstract:The presence of pollutants such as azo dyes in industrial wastewaters has become a major global problem and has attracted a large number of researchers to find solutions. In present work, a new type of Fe-based amorphous ribbons with Fe72Cu1Co5Si9B13 (at.%) composition were prepared by melt-spinning technique. Its behavior as a catalyst in the as-quenched and annealed sates in decomposing the C32H20N6S4O14Na4 (Direct Blue 6) azo dyes in aqueous solution was investigated in details. It is shown that the ribbon with amorphous structure is the most effective in the degradation of azo dyes and the decolorization rate increases with the increase of reaction temperature and ribbon dosage, but decreases with increasing initial solution pH and concentration of Direct Blue 6. The decolorization process follows a first-order exponential kinetic model with very low activation energy. The amorphous ribbon has good structural stability and no loss of performance after five cycles. This work indicates the enormous potential of Fe72Cu1Co5Si9B13 amorphous ribbon as catalyst in remediation of wastewater contaminated with azo dyes.
Enhancing the acid orange dye degradation efficiency of Mg-based glassy alloys with introducing porous structure and zinc oxide

Abstract:Mg-based alloys exhibit a good degradation performance in wastewater treatment containing dyes. The degradation performance of as-spun Mg crystalline ribbon, Mg78Zn22 (MZ) semi-amorphous ribbon and Mg73Zn22Ca5 (MZC) amorphous ribbon on acidic orange dye (AO II) solution is improved apparently by citric acid (CA) solution immersion. The degradation rate constant k of MZ ribbon after immersing for 1 h reaches 0.084 min−1, showing a much higher degradation efficiency than other immersed ribbons. Compared with the immersed Mg and MZC ribbons, the surface of immersed MZ ribbon has a developed loofah porous structure and an appropriate crystallization. Here, the crystallization induced porous structure is composed of Zn and ZnO, which can generate more nascent hydrogen [H] by transporting Mg atoms to surface and more <math>O2•−</math> radical by supplying photo-catalytic ZnO under visible light and then enhance the degradation of AO II dye. This work not only proposes a new method to improve the degradation efficiency of AO II dye by Mg-based alloys, but also provides a new insight into the microstructure and properties of Mg-based alloys.

Abstract:Amorphous ribbons of the alloy Fe63.5Co10Si13.5B9Cu1Nb3 were prepared by the standard single copper wheel melt spinning technique in air and their crystallization kinetics was analyzed by non-isothermal differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurements. The crystallization activation energies (Ex, Ea1 and Ea2) of amorphous ribbons calculated from Kissinger model were 448, 385 and 396kJ/mol for the first and the second crystallizations, respectively. The Avrami exponent n was calculated from the Johnson–Mehl–Avrami (JMA) equation and was used to identify the crystallization mechanism for the amorphous ribbons. The ribbons were milled into different sized flakes, which were molded subsequently to cores using 3wt.% epoxy as a binder. The effective permeability of the cores showed high frequency stability and increased with the size of the flakes. For the cores made from small sized flakes (−75μm), the quality factor was increased at high frequencies, which was attributed to the reduction in the eddy current loss.
Fe-based Multi-Phase Nanocrystalline Ribbons with Hierarchically Flowerlike Structured Metal Oxides after Modified by Orange II for Cr VI Absorption

Abstract:Three-dimensional flowerlike nanostructured metal oxides attached on the surfaces of Fe-based multi-phase nanocrystalline ribbons (Fe-MNRs) were prepared by a simple way (through immersing the Fe-MNRs in Orange II solution). It has been found that the as-prepared Fe-MNRs with 3D flowerlike nanostructures (Fe-MNRs + FNs) exhibit good absorption property for a typical heavy metal ion (CrVI) in wastewater, while Fe-MNRs do not possess such properties. The Fe-MNRs + FNs could remove 99% CrVI ions from the solution in 40 min, and this adsorption property can be attributed to the ion exchange between CrVI and surface hydroxyl groups (O–H) of 3D flowerlike nanostructures. The present result suggests that the Fe-MNRs + FNs, prepared by facile way, possess great potentials in removing heavy metallic ions in wastewater.

Abstract:The Al85Co10Y5 (Co10) amorphous ribbon exhibits an excellent degradation performance in polluted water treatment for the first time by degrading methyl orange (MO) dye. Compared with the Al85Fe10Y5 (Fe10) amorphous ribbon for degradation MO solution, the Co10 ribbon has a higher degradation efficiency, a higher TOC removal rate, a lower reaction activation energy, a stronger reusability and a higher corrosion resistance. The Co10 ribbon is not only applicable for acidic MO solution, but also has high degradation efficiency in alkaline MO solution. Compared with the spherical particles on the surface of Fe10 ribbon, the maze like structure on the surface of Co10 ribbon can increase the reaction surface area and improve the degradation efficiency of MO solution. And more O2 − radicals by supplying photo catalytic Y2O3 under visible light irradiation and then enhance the degradation of MO solution. This work not only provides a new method with high efficiency and low cost for the degradation of MO solution, but also provides a new research direction for the degradation mechanism of Al-based alloys.

Abstract:Amorphous Fe73.5-xCoxSi13.5B9Cu1Nb3（x=10,30,50） ribbons were prepared by the single copper wheel melt spinning technique in the air atmosphere.The nanocrystallization kinetics of amorphous ribbons was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry（DSC）.The apparent activation energies of amorphous ribbons were calculated by using Kissinger and Ozawa methods.It was found that the activation energies of the first crystallization reduce and those of the second crystallization rise with increasing Co content.The local Avrami parameter m for primary crystallization was calculated using Johnson-Mehl-Avrami（JMA） model.The values of the Avrami parameter showed that the primary crystallization mechanism of amorphous ribbons varied at different stages.In the initial stage,the crystallization mechanism was bulk crystallization with three dimensional nucleation and grain growth controlled by diffusion.In the following stage,it was surface crystallization with one dimensional nucleation and grain growth at a near zero nucleation rate.The variation of soft magnetic properties of nanocrystalline Fe63.5Co10Si13.5B9Cu1Nb3 powder cores as a function of milling time has been investigated.It was found that the effective permeability of the cores shows high frequency stability and decreases with increasing milling time.The quality factor increases with increasing frequency in the lower frequency range,reaches a maximum at the frequency of 80 kHz,and then decreases gradually with increasing frequency.
Efficient degradation capability of the FePCB amorphous alloy in acid orange 7 dye solution

Abstract:The degradation ability of the Fe 85 P 11 C 2 B 2 amorphous alloy in the acid orange 7 (AO7) solution was compared to that of Fe 80 B 13 C 7 . The results show that the Fe 85 P 11 C 2 B 2 amorphous ribbon exhibits a higher degradation efficiency and lower reaction activation energy than Fe 80 B 13 C 7 . This is due to the fact that Fe 85 P 11 C 2 B 2 is prone to form 3D nanochannel and porous nanosheet network structures, which improves adsorption capacity and increases the number of active reaction sites. On the other hand, the weakly bonded Fe–B and Fe–P can form more complex galvanic cells with strongly bonded Fe–C to accelerate dye degradation. The analysis of electron paramagnetic resonance and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry reveals that the generation of the reactive species [H] plays a key role in the degradation of AO7. In addition, the degradation pathway and environmental applicability were studied. The results confirm that the low-cost Fe 85 P 11 C 2 B 2 alloy is a potential material for wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Amorphous ribbons of the alloy Fe73.5Si13.5B9Cu1Nb1V2 were prepared by the standard single copper wheel melt spinning technique in the air atmosphere. The crystallization kinetics of amorphous ribbons was analyzed by non-isothermal differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurements. The crystallization activation energies of amorphous ribbons calculated by using Kissinger model were 364 and 337 kJ/mol for the first and the second crystallization, respectively. The Avrami exponent n was calculated from the Johnson-Mehl-Avrami (JMA) equation. The value of the Avrami exponent showed that the crystallization mechanism in the non-isothermal primary crystallization of amorphous ribbons was all shapes growing from small dimensions controlled by diffusion at decreasing nucleation rate. The variation of soft magnetic properties of nanocrystalline Fe73.5Si13.5B9Cu1Nb1V2 alloy powder cores as a function of milling times has been investigated.
